EFCC on Thursday May 5, 2016 arraigned one Irene Okeoha before Justice S. C. Amadi of the State High Court, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State on one-count charge of stealing to the tune of eight million naira (N8, 000, 000. 00).
Okeoha, who is the customer service manager, Ecobank Plc, Hotel Presidential branch, allegedly defrauded the bank of the sum of eight million naira.
The charge read;

“That you, Mrs. Irene Okeoha on or about 17th February, 2016 at Hotel Presidential Port Harcourt, within the Port Harcourt Division of this Honorable Court did fraudulently steal the sum of N8 million only, property of Ecobank Plc and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code CAP 37 Vol. 11 Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.”

When the charge was read to her, the accused pleaded not guilty and the prosecution counsel, Ben Ubi, urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial and to remand the defendant in prison custody.However, the defence counsel, B. Igeongei, prayed the court to grant his client bail as the accused was already on administrative bail by the EFCC.

Justice Amadi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20 million and one surety in the like sum. The surety who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court should possess a landed property to be verified by the prosecution. The Surety is also to depose to an affidavit of means.

Justice Amadi adjourned the case to May 25, 2016 for trial and ordered that the defendant to be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of her bail.

On Wednesday, the media was awash with reports of a bomb explosion in Onitsha, Anambra state but after investigations, Dumebi Ifeanyi can authoritatively tell you that there was no explosion,

Investigations show that it was a petrol explosion accident which occurred around 8:30PM on Tuesday, at a settlement known as Kara Market along Atani road, Iyiowa, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state, in which 13 persons sustained varying degrees of burns and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

In a visit to Toronto Hospital Onitsha, where three of the victims are receiving treatment, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, decried the challenge of petrol scarcity, which is forcing people to buy and store the commodity in plastic cans, thereby exposing themselves to dangers of fire accident.

The Governor, who promised to bear the cost of the treatment of the all the victims, appealed to the general public to desist from acts that will allow wanton destruction of lives and property and embrace safety habits for a better life.
The victims according to the physician are in stable condition.

The Nigerian army has done it again.

Troops of 7 Division based on information received, conducted a special operation at Chingurimi, Walasa and Masa villages which were believed to have large concentration of abducted women and children were held hostages by the Boko Haram terrorists on Wednesday 4th May 2016.
The troops killed quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists and rescued 17 women, an old man and 24 children at the area. They also recovered 1 AK-47 rifle, 6 rounds of 7.62mm, 295 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO), 12 Dane Guns, 21 unserviceable mobile telephone handsets and one serviceable as well as150 different SIM cards.
In all, over 400 persons held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists were freed by the troops.

P of police, Solomon Arase has approved the launch of a new supernumerary police uniform by Shell petroleum development company.Below is the IGP’s remarks at the launch in Portharcourt, rivers state on Monday May 2nd 2016.

I am most delighted to be in your midst today on the occasion of the launch of the new SPY Police Uniform. This is an initiative that has taken a while to come to fruition, but I am happy to see its proper implementation by today’s landmark event by Shell Petroleum Development Company.

Ladies and gentlemen, the concept of Supernumerary Police draws from Sec. 18 of the Nigeria Police Act which provides guidelines for their establishment and also grants them the powers, privileges and immunities of police officers, but as limited to area in respect of which they are appointed and in any police area adjacent thereto, but not elsewhere. In essence, therefore, SPY Police are engaged for specific security functions within a restricted jurisdiction or operational space. In addition, Sec. 18 (3) (d) of the Police Act provides that Supernumerary Police officers are subject to the Provisions of the Police Act and ‘in particular, the provision thereof relating to discipline’

It is in giving effect to these specific and other broad provisions of the Police Act in relation to the establishment, deployment, status, operation, control and discipline of Supernumerary Police, that the idea of kitting them with Police Uniforms and accoutrement evolved. Although, in so doing, unique service numbers are issued to them to effectively distinguish them from the general duty police officers and also identify the specific jurisdiction they are attached to.

Over the years, however, and with the expansion in the number of Companies and Bodies applying for the establishment of Supernumerary Police in line with provisions of Sec. 18 of Police Act, there has been a significant expansion in its manpower profile and spread nationwide. This trend presented a major challenge as unprofessional conducts by some few elements within the Supernumerary Police structure were being increasingly ascribed to the Nigeria Police Force by citizens who are apparently oblivious of the operations and statutory status of the SPY Police.

Speaking at the close of the summit, Minister Lai Mohammed said;

“All the materials, papers presented in the course of the summit will be submitted to a committee that would look into them and see how the ideas can be harnessed. The committee will be given four weeks to take these literatures and see how we can make the recommendations implementable. After that, we will call a meeting with stakeholders from tourism, culture, entertainment and others to strategise how those ideas can be implemented,”

The atrocities of the Boko Haram terrorists knew no bound. Troops of 29 Task Force Brigade on clearance operations of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists rescued an 80 year old man in Shaltimari village, Borno State yesterday 1st May 2016.
The elderly man, Mallam Ibrahim Matuk stated that he suffered untold hardship in the hands of the Boko Haram terrorists who killed all his children while in captivity.

Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-rufai has reacted to the killings of a traditional ruler and his nephew in a community in Kaduna state. On Sunday night, Unknown gunmen murdered Mr Bala Madaki, District Head of Fadan Karshi in Numana Chiefdom of Sanga Local Government Area,alongside his nephew, Emmanuel Tanko, 19, at his residence in Fadan Karshi.

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has condemned the killing of a traditional ruler and his relation in Fadan Karshi, Sanga local government area of the State. While commiserating with the family of the victims, the Governor urged the people of Sanga local government area to be calm and support the security agencies to investigate the attack and apprehend the perpetrators of the murders.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the eight local government areas of Kaduna South Senatorial District, the Governor said that security agencies are investigating the attack, and are working to apprehend the culprits.

The Governor assured the party leaders of his commitment to peace and security in every part of the state. "It is a sad development. But we will not relent in our duty of protecting our people. We shall continue to strengthen the security agencies to do a better job, as well as encourage harmonious coexistence across our communities.

"The gains made in recent months to eliminate violent communal clashes in the area must be upheld. We must all be vigilant and do our best maintain the peace in our communities."
