Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has described Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state as a sham. Amaechi made his position clear while fielding questions from journalists after casting his vote at Ward 8, Unit 14, Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State. He said the elections witnessed thuggery and ballot box snatching in most parts of the state coupled with violence. Referring to the election, the governor said, “I think it is a sham. You noticed what happened in Omagwa, what happened was that somebody called me and said they were been attacked at a particular polling booth and I went there, the thugs were overwhelming until another group of soldiers came before they ran away. “Don’t forget that the report was that our people were been attacked, so I came to rescue the people who were been attacked. When we came, you saw the thugs yourselves, so how do you stabilize the system when already the system has been taken over by thugs?” He noted that the Nigerian Police failed in their responsibility to the people to provide peaceful atmosphere for the electoral process. “I think there must have been an arrangement between the police and the PDP for the state to be overrun by thugs and you know, the funniest part is that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) promised us over 2,800 mobile policemen. What you see is just one Deputy Commissioner of Police John Amadi orchestrating conniving with the PDP to orchestrate all these violence against APC members and Rivers people. “Yesterday, Mr. President(Goodluck Jonathan) withdrew the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunde Ogunsaki and ordered him to go back to Calabar just because he arrested a DPO who took out four wards result sheets and gave to militants working for PDP”. Amaechi said that thuggery, violence and hijacking of electoral materials marred the electoral process across the state. “You have been following me around and I am sure you must have seen the kind of thuggery that was on display, you have seen materials been hijacked”, he said as he noted some election officials were ambushed along the way by political thugs. He blamed the retention of INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state Gesila Khan for the cause of election malpractices in the State. “If INEC had posted the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) away, we wouldn’t have been here. If the Commissioner of Police and the President had allowed the police to function properly, we won’t be here.” “In the Ogoni area, you have one Area Commander, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, harassing people, arresting APC members. Then you have in the state DCP John Amadi. By 2a.m this morning, he was busy in Nyesom Wike’s father’s house writing results. http://leadership.ng/news/politics/424853/elections-in-rivers-a-sham-amaechi |

The Tijjani Usman-led faction of the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has been expelled by Joint Campus Committee chairmen of the association over allegation of fraud and impersonation. A statement issued by the chairman and secretary, National Joint Campus Committee, Yakubu Yerima Abdullahi and Magnus Okosisi, said after an exhaustive deliberation on the state of NANS, it decided to expel all the members of the Tijjani Usman-led faction to save the students union from the clutches of fraudsters and imposters who had been parading themselves as students’ leaders. “NANS hereby expels Tijjani Usman and his executive members and warns them to stop parading themselves as NANS Excos so as to avoid the wrath of Nigerian students whom they terribly betrayed on several occasions. This has become necessary in view of the pains inflicted on the union as a result of the misinformation on Asaba election and blatant disregard of the position of Nigerian students on national issues. “NANS calls on agencies, ministries, state governments and foreign missions to stop dealing with Tijjani Usman and his Excos. They have been an embarrassment to NANS. “We thank Nigerians for their support and understanding on issues that concern students and we will replicate such gesture by presenting credible and acceptable leadership that will champion the overall interest of NANS,” the statement said. http://leadership.ng/news/414821/nans-expels-tijjani-usman-led-excos-over-fraud-impersonation?fb_ref=Default&fb_source=message

The Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, has dismissed the rumour that he had passed on. The speculation on the monarch’s demise had gone viral on the Internet on Friday morning. The rumour also intensified with the claim that the Oba did not personally receive President Goodluck Jonathan, during his February 4 presidential rally in Benin, the Edo State capital. But the Benin Traditional Council, told our correspondent on Friday evening that it was a mere speculation, which had been on for over six months and lacked truth. The Secretary to the council, Mr. Frank Irabor, explained that it was the responsibility of the council to issue a formal statement, if such a development did occur. He said, “They have been peddling that rumour for more than a year now, because the Oba has not been coming out. “If there is anything like that, there is usually a statement from the palace or from the Benin Traditional Council.” Although the spokesperson did not specify whether or not the Oba was hale and hearty, he said that inability of the President Jonathan to see the monarch, when he visited the palace, did not give credence to his rumoured death. “The fact that he has not been coming out, even when the President came last week, does not mean that there is anything like that.” “I don’t bother about rumours. I believe in getting information from the authentic source. For more than six months, they have been carrying the rumour,” he added. http://www.punchng.com/news/oba-of-benin-is-alive-traditional-council/ |

Following the withdrawal of his security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal after his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC), no less than 60 members of the House from his now reportedly move around with him to serve as security. Sunday Pucchreported that the 60 Reps have been accompanying Tambuwal around Abuja to protect him against potential security threats. They drive along with him in a motorcade, and also form a shield around Tambuwal to protect him. “We all went with him to the (Federal High) court today (Friday) to challenge the withdrawal of his security personnel.” Ali, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Justice, said the members would do everything within their power to protect Tambuwal. Tambuwal and the APC have since defended his defection, claiming that the PDP had factions, in addition to arguing that the courts have yet to resolve pending cases on defection before them. It was also learnt that the speaker and his loyalists were working to ensure that the alleged plot by the Presidency and the PDP caucus to reconvene the House before December 3 is frustrated. http://abusidiqu.com/60-house-reps-members-form-human-shield-around-tambuwal/ |

The unnamed passenger, age 63, died during a Nigeria-to-JFK flight after a vomiting fit — but CDC officials provided only a ‘cursory’ examination before stating there was no Ebola. The man boarded an Arik Air plane out of Lagos, Nigeria, on Wednesday night, but died before the plane reached its final destination. Flight crew called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Port Authority and customs officials, who met the flight at the gate as it touched down, making 145 anxious travellers to stay on board. The CDC officials then conducted exam on the body and announced the dead passenger did not have Ebola, but have not offered a cause of death. The accident understandably distressed passengers and crew alike. New York Republican Congressman Peter King immediately fired off a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection (CBP) challenging to know how CDC officials were able to make such a resolve so quickly. Between 70 and 100 passengers a day arrive at JFK from the Ebola epicenter countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, King mentioned, and they have admission to public washrooms and socialize with other passengers before their first screening. http://www.naij.com/307360-nigerian-passenger-dies-vomiting-on-plane-to-nyc.html |

Governor Murtala Nyako’s political associates had played prominent role in the court case instituted by Ngilari over contention in respect of whether he has sent his resignation letter to Governor Nyako or not which led to the sacking of acting governor, Ahmadu Fintiri. The Nyako’s men who were in the list include Mr. P.P. Abdul Rahman Bobboi who was also an adviser to Nyako but was brought by Ngilari as chief of protocol. A move by the Peoples Democratic Party Caucus at the House of Representatives to reverse the power of the Independent National Electoral Commission to deploy troops during elections failed on Tuesday. The motion, which was moved by Deputy House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, failed following an overwhelming “nay” voice vote against it on the floor. The session was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal. More of the loud voice vote came from the opposition All Progressives Congress members, who responded with a deafening “nay” when Tambuwal called for the voting. The development stunned the majority PDP members, who apparently took it for granted that the motion would be passed. Only a few members shouted “yes” when the Speaker called for the votes supporting the motion. By Tuesday’s decision, the House had stuck to the original proposal in the new amendment to the Electoral Act, 2010, which placed the sole power to request deployment of troops for election purposes in the hands of INEC. The new provision is contained in Clause 29(1)(b) of the amendment Act. The House had passed the provision before members proceeded for the Sallah break on September 30. But on Tuesday, Ogor came with a motion seeking to “rescind” the decision of the House on the grounds that it conflicted with Sections 217 and 218 of the 1999 Constitution. According to him, the Constitution empowers only the President to deploy the Armed Forces for operational duties or by delegation to the service chiefs. He argued that the INEC Act sought to rest such power in another authority other than Mr. President. Ogor spoke further, “By the provision of Section 218(2), the Constitution envisaged members of the Armed Forces of the Federation that the President can delegate his powers relating to the operational use of the Armed Forces in line with Section 218(3) are the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff, and not to any other institution or head of any other agency of government. “Retaining Clause 29(1) in the amendment of the Principal Act is tantamount to ceding the President’s powers relating to the operational use of the armed forces to INEC against the provision of Section 218 of the constitution.” However, the motion failed amid a tensed atmosphere following a heated argument between Ogor and the Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila. http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-plot-to-stop-inec-from-deploying-troops-fails/ |
Individuals who want to send money outside the country through the International Money Transfer Services, can now send up to $5,000 per transaction, 150 per cent above the initial allowed limit. The limit for transfers was reviewed upward from the initial $2,000 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), according to a circular made available on its website yesterday. Although the CBN did not give any reason for the upward review, it specified that the new limit of $5,000 applies only to individuals, excluding corporate bodies. The circular which was signed by the CBN director, Trade and Exchange, Olakanmi Gbadamosi, reads, “authorised dealers and members of the public are hereby notified that the threshold of $2,000 per transaction has been reviewed upward. “Accordingly, the allowable limit for the outbound international money transfer of $2,000 per transaction has been increased to $5,000 of its equivalent per transaction. “However, it is important to note that this service is only applicable to person-to-person transfer. For the avoidance of doubt, corporate entities are not allowed to use this product.” http://leadership.ng/business/386966/cbn-increases-outbound-transfer-limit-5000

THE South West chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has berated the Federal Government for giving Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, President of the Christain Association of Nigeria, CAN, a bad name over the use of his private jet for the procurement of arms for the country. The association said in a communiqué signed by its chairman, Archbishop Magnus Adeyemi Atilade in Osogbo, Osun State, that the National Security Adviser, and Defence Minister should be questioned to explain what they knew about the deal, resulting in the seizure of $9.3milion arms funds by the South African Government. CAN said the whole issue looked like a set-up because its national president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor whose jet was hired for the arms purchase is neither a government official, nor had control of the jet when it had been leased for whatever purpose the hirer used it. It said, “Dasuki and Gwarzo should be questioned and they should provide urgent answers to this national embarrassment to Nigerians.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/can-tasks-fg-oritsejafors-jet/ |
Anxiety has engulfed Adamawa State House of Assembly as a plot to impeach its embattled speaker, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who was recently sacked as acting governor of the state by an Abuja High Court, gathers momentum. Indications emerging from the House of Assembly indicate high political scheming by the state lawmakers to get rid of the speaker over some thorny issues that may be connected with integrity deficit. An insider source revealed that 17 lawmakers are currently pressing for Fintiri’s removal, saying that the speaker may be shown the way out sooner than expected as the legislators could no more vouch for his integrity. Another reason advanced for the speaker’s removal was the need to adhere to the spirit of spread of political offices as enshrined in the party’s constitution. Both Fintiri and the new governor Bala James Ngillari are from the same town, Michika. Some of the lawmakers contend that it is unconstitutional for the speaker and the governor to come from the same zone, let alone the same town. They insist that “the House will not lay a wrong precedent because of the interest of few people.” It was gathered that the speaker would be asked to resign honourably, but if he resists, then the lawmakers would impeach him. When contacted, the chairman, House Committee on Information, Adamu Kamale, said he was not aware of any plot to remove the speaker from office. http://leadership.ng/news/386982/adamawa-assembly-plot-remove-speaker-thickens

The Bauchi State Chapter of the Buhari Campaign Organisation has pledged to buy nomination form for a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC). Danjuma Dabo, the Coordinator of The Nigerian Solution Network Group, made the disclosure on Saturday in Bauchi during a solidarity rally in support of Mr. Buhari. Mr. Dabo said whether Mr. Buhari was willing to contest in the 2015 polls or not, the organisation would source for fund to foot both the campaign bills and purchase the nomination form for him. The coordinator of the group, who said the N27 million fee for the purchase of nomination form was too high, added that it was above Mr. Buhari’s financial capability. He then urged party supporters to contribute funds for activities and to enable the organisation to raise fund for the former head of state. Also Bala Jibrin, a retired captain and guest speaker at the rally, faulted suggestions in some quarters that Mr. Buhari was tribalistic. Mr. Jibrin described Buhari as “a statesman who refused to associate with those playing tribal or religious politics’’. He assured that if elected, Mr. Buhari would salvage the country from its current state of insecurity, agricultural backwardness and revive other sectors of the nation. He said it was the right time for the electorate to try people like Mr. Buhari, who he stressed would bring the country out of its current woes. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible election come 2015. The retired captain said it was time for the nation’s electoral body to redeem its image in the interest of political stability of the country. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/169341-2015-buharis-loyalists-pledge-to-buy-apc-nomination-form-for-him.html

A professor of business education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Mr Mahmood Aliyu, has declared his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The presidential aspirant made the declaration at a press conference on Saturday in Minna. Aliyu said his decision to vie for the presidency was informed by the agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders “to fight the malaise in the country. “There has been agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders by well-meaning Nigerians in order to take this country out of problems.’’ The aspirant said APC was the only party that would tackle the current security challenges bedevilling the country. He added that “an APC government will tackle the security issue with all the seriousness it requires and deserves.’’ Aliyu, however, called on the national leadership of the APC to review the N27 million fee for picking the party’s presidential nomination form. He said “our party should have a rethink about the fee for presidential nomination forms, so that ordinary Nigerians can afford it. “Ordinary people who have something to offer get scared away by the amount; even the PDP fee is not up to that of our party.’’ He described as embarrassing, reports that he was being sponsored by the ruling PDP to run for president, arguing that he had always been in the opposition since he joined politics in 1993. The presidential aspirant was born on Nov. 20, 1951 in Niger and he is an indigene of offa in Kwara state. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/don-joins-apc-presidential-race/
