Well the reverse chance argument is based on ignorance not facts. Infact its even more improbable.

Pls show me how to create my own sun by smashing some atoms together.

Many theists, when they realize their philosophical arguments have failed, will resort to stereotypical character attacks.

Christian scientists are not obligated to "scientifically demonstrate their faith" just the same way atheist scientists have consistently FAILED to demonstrate the basic premise of their own "faith" i.e. that God doesnt exist.
You argued earlier that faith is divorced from occupation THEN go right ahead to accuse christian scientists of being seduced by "irrational religion"?

I think many of you simply post without a clear understanding of what it is you wish to pass across.

My friend, it may please you to know that in any argument, the burden of proof is on the one making the claim.
If a person claims to have invented an antigravity device, it is not incumbent on others to prove that no such thing exists. The believer must make a case. Everyone else is justified in refusing to believe untill evidence is produced and substantiated.

Its that last quote that makes me jump into this thread, the notion that a humanist cannot be religious, though, let me first attend to the dichotomy raised between religion and reason.

Maybe I should make it clear that because of the many groups and people who today call themselves Humanists,  a new term, Secular Humanism has come to dinstinguish real Humanism from the rest.Secular humanism and atheism are not identical. One can be an atheist and not a secular humanist or humanist. Indeed, some thinkers or activists who call themselves atheists explicitly reject humanist ethical values (for example, Stalin, Lenin, Nietzsche, and others). Nor is secular humanism the same thing as humanism by itself; it is surely sharply different from religious humanism.

On that note, going back to the idea that a humanist cannot be a religious person. Please consider first that humanism did not always mean one is an atheist, it pure meant one had concern for one's fellow humans, and I would assert that Christ, Buddha, and Mohammed, to name but a few exemplified this love of the humankind, in general. In my mind, religion that does not hold that human being at its core can be defined as devil worship, I would suggest.
should also make it clear that secular humanism is not antireligious; it is simply nonreligious. There is a difference.

Secular humanists are nontheists; they may be atheists, agnostics, or skeptics about the God question and/or immortality of the soul. To say that we are nonreligious means, that is, that we are not religious; ours is a scientific, ethical, and philosophical  This means that, as secular humanists, we offer good practical wisdom based on ethics, science, and philosophy.

Ethics is an autonomous field of inquiry, independent of theological claims, amenable to rational scrutiny, testing value judgments by their consequences.
Ethical values and judgments are relative to human interests, needs, desires, ends, and values; they are open to objective criticism and evaluation.
Fulfillment, realization, and maximization of human freedom and happiness are what humanists seek, both for the individual and the community.
Thus there are ethical responsibilities that humanists hold toward others within the community, on the interpersonal level, the level of the democratic society, and the planetary community as well.
Clearly, secular humanism is not equivalent to atheism—it is far more than that. Similarly, secular humanism finds itself at odds with religious humanism, since its outlook is clearly nonreligious. It goes beyond any negative skeptical inquiry insofar as it seeks to provide a positive and affirmative alternative to customary moral and religious practices.

I don't know how people can say there is no GOD.

Just thinking of the clouds, the sun, the stars, the ocean is enough to know there is a supreme being.

Its that simple, how did this things come to be?
Forget the evolutionary theories, the big bang stories.

It could only have been the hand work of a supreme being.

My friend, I thank you for your response. Most people see the existence of god from your point of view. They say"where did it all come from? How can you explain the complex order of the universe/ I can't beleive the beauty of nature just happened by accident. Design requires a designer."
Do you realise that this argument merely assumes what it wishes to prove? Any attempt to "explain" requires a hgher context within which it can be understood. To ask for the explanation of the 'natural universe' is simply to demand a "higher universe".
The universe is "all there is"  It is not a thing. A god would certainly be a part of "all there is", and if the universe requires an explanation, then god requires an explanation, ad infinitum.
The mind of god would be at least as complex and orderly as the rest of nature and would be subject to the same question: WHO MADE GOD? If a god can be thought eternal, then so can the universe.
There is design IN the universe, but to speak of design OF the universe is just theistic semantics. The perceived design in nature is not necessarily intelligent. Life is the result the mindless "design"  of natural selection. Order in the cosmos comes from the "design"  of natural regularity. There is no need for a higher explanation.
My dear friend, the design argument is based on ignorance, not facts. Failure to solve a natural riddle does not mean there is no answer. For millenia humans have created mythical answers to "mysteries" such as thunder(sango), sickle celle(abiku) and fertility. But the more we learn, the fewer gods we need. god belief is just answering a mystery with mystery, and therefore answers nothing.

Is that your point, or Thomas Jefferson's point?

Thomas Jefferson said it. Most people follow it and now am inviting you to come let us apply reason together instead of relying of blidfolded faith which is the substance of thing hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

davidylan:

Dont you just want to laugh when these atheists try to ascribe to themselves the exclusive ability to "reason" and "science"?
Who told you christians cant reason and are not scientists? You are not a christian . . . do you believe you have more intelligence than Isaac Newton who was a christian?

What "science" are you talking about? Are you scientifically knowledgeable yourself? I know many born again christians who are scientists, surgeons and engineers in the USA. What are you?

You are getting it wrong in the first place. Not all atheists apply reason and science. Infact there are thousands of atheists who don't subscribe to rationalism and science. Maybe you do not know that there are people who are neither atheists nor religious yet they reason and accept science as a tool to understanding our world and profering solutions to our problems.
Religion / Re: What Is Wrong With Reason ? by amnestylaw(m): 7:43pm On May 28, 2009
Most People argue that : "there are many scientists who believe in god. If many of the world's most intelligent people are theists, then belief in god must be sensible".
I wish to state here that is just a fallacy of appeal to authority, which atheists could equally do as well, or better, Academics, as a group, are much less religious than the general population.
Though it is easy to find scientists who believe, none of them can scientifically demonstrate their faith. Beleif is usually a cultural or personal matter separate from occupation and no one, not even a scientist is immune from the irrational seductions of religion.
Religion / Re: What Is Wrong With Reason ? by amnestylaw(m): 7:25pm On May 28, 2009
Fellow Nairalanders, this is a response to PILGRIM.1 and many others who think they know Humanism or who know they know nothing about Humanism.

Even though many people, the world over, follow a Humanist philosophy, they may not have heard about Humanism. Some who have heard about it, have a not so clear understanding of what Humanism realy is. I think that is one of the reasons why many religious persons claim to be Humanists today.

My friends, if you care to know, Humanism is a fairly new name for a very old philosophy which has as its basic princples-- skepticism of supernatural claims and an emphasis on living a fulfilling and ethical life  without religion. Humanism is the study of what it means to be a good human being. It is a way of living, thinking and acting that allows every individual to actualize his or her highest aspirations and successfully achieve a happy and fulfilling life.

Humanists,  therefore, beieve that we can live good lives without religious or superstitious beliefs, that we can only have one life and we should make the best of it, creating meaning and purpose for ourselves and making sense of the world using  reason, experience and shared human values.
True Humanists are AGNOSTICS (A=without, GNOSTIC=knowledge) because they think we cannot know for sure the answers to some of the big questions about life, including whether god exists or not. Because there is no evidence for the existence of god, for an afterlife, Humanists live their lives as ATHEISTS (A= without, THEIST = god), find other reasons for living good lives.

Fellow, Nairalanders, Humanism is open to all unbelievers and non-religious people---atheists,rationalists,secularists,marxists, and materialists.

Therefore, if you are unchurched, unmosqued, unshrined, that is, if you reject or are critical of supernatural beliefs, then Humanism is for you.

My good friends including (PILGRIM.1) should note that one who believes in any gods, devils or supernatural beings cannot be Humanists. Those who believe in heaven, hell, an afterlife, another world, revelation, miracles and all forms of spiritual encounters cannot be Humanists. One must reject religions and all its deities in favour of the advancement of humanity to find true Humanism

The Happy Human symbol was chosen in a competition organized by IHEU member organization the British Humanist Association in 1965. It was designed by Dennis Barrington. Since then, it (or one of many variations) has been widely adopted by Humanist organizations, including IHEU.

The British Humanist Association holds the trademark in the UK for both the original (upright) happy human and the newer (bendy) version. Hanne Stinson, executive director of the BHA writes: "The upright logo is now used in the UK and internationally as a Humanist emblem (something we are happy to see) -- we are content for any Humanist organisation to use this emblem, and would not prevent anyone from using it in that way."

IHEU member organization Norwegian Humanist Association paid for the symbol to be professionally re-designed in 2005 and the latest versions are shown below.

Does anyone see senses in the above quote?
Religion / Do You Believe In God? by amnestylaw(m): 3:54pm On May 28, 2009
Studies show that most Nigerians believe in God. Is this belief justified? Some people say "NO". Judge for yourself and contribute your answers to thetopic: DOES GOD EXIST?
Religion / Re: Atheists And Nigerians by amnestylaw(m): 3:34pm On May 28, 2009
This is a reply to those who say that god exists because the universe is governed by natural laws. They argue that every law or laws requires a lawgiver and as such there must be a divine Governor. I want to explain here that the universe is not "governed" by anything. A natural law is a mere description, not a prescription. Natural laws are merely human conceptions of the way things normally react, not behavioural mandates, as with societal laws. If the design argument is valid, the mind of a god would be equally "governed" by some principle of order, requiring a higher lawgiver.
Education / Our Educational System Is Dysfunctional by amnestylaw(m): 8:13pm On May 27, 2009
AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. PRESIDENT:
ALHAJI UMARU YAR'ADUA

Your Excellency Sir,

OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS DYSFUNCTIONAL

During the 2008 Law Week of the Law students' Society, Faculty of Law, O.A.U, Ife, we paid visit to the St Murumba primary School, Lagere, Ile-Ife to give back to the society what it gave us …and what I saw about the school is an exact representation of our educational system.
Sir, you may not know that our education system is dysfunctional. Those who flock around you MAY not want/allow you to see/know the true situation of things concerning our educational system.
I wish to bring to your notice that our schools are in deep crises; they are in shambles, from the kindergarten to the ivory-tower. Most public secondary schools in the country lack science and laboratory equipment and their libraries are not well-stacked with recently published books (that is for those who have one). In our primary schools, St Murumba, for example, school children sit on the floor of dilapidated school buildings to receive lectures.
In our universities, polytechnics and Monotechnics, classroom buildings, job training facilities, and infrastructural systems (plumbing, roofs, sewer and electrical) are deteriorating or are inadequate and inefficient. Classrooms and other facilities in our institutions of higher learning are already overcrowded, with many job training programmes and Direct Entry classes unable to accommodate the number of qualified students wishing to enroll. Important/vital programmes in Law, Medicine, Engineering continually turn qualified students away.
Sir, you may want to say that during the past years, judicious repairs have been made to extend the useful life of classrooms, infrastructure and other facilities, but permit me to explain that the repairs only provide temporary solutions to extensive problems caused by old, deteriorating and overcrowded facilities.
Your Excellency, I quite understand that Nursery, primary, secondary and our higher institutions are facing mounting costs for repairs to classrooms, residences and other buildings on campus and in school arena and I know that they are not like shopping centres where newness and modernity are essential for success. Even though most of our schools don't have a particular modern infrastructure, yet I would not suggest that they be torn down and rebuilt anew.
However, I suggest that you select the right analyst to undertake an assessment of our educational problems. Removal of asbestos, improved lighting and other health and safety issues must be addressed to ensure safe and optimal facilities for our students. Private businesses and concerns could fund the repair and renovation of existing facilities, upgrade classrooms, labs, current and future educational needs, students and faculty alone but for our leaders too who pay visit once in a while to our campuses and other schools in the country.
I hope your Excellency will join me in urging our state governors and all stakeholders in the educational sector to look in a different direction to solve our problems.

Respectfully yours,

Adewale Akintayo Olugbenga

Iwant to disagree with those who say that being an atheist means being religious because atheism to them is a religion. They went further to say atheists do not beleive in god. That is the fallacy of the argument--- atheists do not disbelieve god because they cannot disbelieve a god that does not exist. You disbeleive something that exists. For example, i can stop beleiving in the 7-point Agenda or my parents. I cannot beleive somebody or something i don't have knowledge about. Atheists lack beleif in god because, when people say god exists, whether the christian god, islam's or other gods, the atheist will say, since i can't see your god or because you cannot prove that your god exists, then i lack a beleif in s/he.
Religion / Re: I Think I'm Losing My Faith In God by amnestylaw(m): 7:19pm On May 27, 2009
Hello,
Firstly, I would want to commend that boldness you exhibitted by coming out in the first place to question the existence or otherwise of god and whether your religion is correct. You are just one among Billions of people who question their faith and or beleif. One thing I want you to realise is that humans were never born christians, muslims, budhists or religionists. As humans ,we are first of all human beings before christians, muslims and the likes. Forget about the fact that your parents beleive in a god, and that almost everybody belongs to one faith or the other. What we need as human beings is not god(God),religion or supernatural powers but science and critical thinking. Being born into a christian home and raised among the Nigerian northern muslims, i had the opprtunity to learn about two different faiths-islam and christianity. Even thugh I was actively involved in preaching the gospel of christ after studying the bible with foreign teachers at the world Bible School, USA, I still questioned the authenticity of not only the bible but quran and other religions. The reasons are not far fetched--- There is no concrete evidence for the existence of the supernatural, an omniposcient(all knowing ) god did not need to regret creating human beings since in the first place, s/he should have known that humans would go wayward. Moses, the writer of the first five books of the old testament shouldn't have written that:''and moses died and the lord buried him and up till date no one knows where he was buried". He forgot he was writing about his death while he was still alive.
With God alone you cannot pass your exams, get what to eat or succeed in life. To pass, succeed or eat, you need to work hard , man needs to invent things that will make life easier for him. Religion, someone said, is the opium of the masses. Most people belong to a faith or beleive in a god because they do not want to be labelled unbeleivers, faithless, atheists, devilish and the likes. However, I want to inform you that there are thousands of unbeleivers making it in life, doing good and putting their fellow human beings first. As a Humanist who knows that science does not have answers to all our problems, I see science, reason and critical thinking as what we need rather than a god or devil we cannot see, verify or feel. Man should be blamed for all the problems of this world and not god or devil because there are no enough evidence to prove they exist.

Religion / Re: My Defense Against Atheist by amnestylaw(m): 6:19pm On May 27, 2009
I wish to inform you that being an Atheist or gay does not mean you are "evil". While it is true that there are lots of atheists and gay who are "evil", yet it is equally true that quite a lot of "MEN OF GOD" and non LGTB persons are worst. From your argument, it seems you want to subtly attack gay and atheists as you probably see them as "anti-religion"

Politics / Why We Cannot Celebrate Democracy Day In Nigeria by amnestylaw(m): 6:07pm On May 27, 2009
MAY 29: THEIR DEMOCRACY DAY

May 29, 2009 is supposed to be a day that Nigerians both at home and abroad will celebrate a decade of successive democratically elected administrations, a day to be celebrated because in itself it is supposed to end the pains and hardship of a betrothed citizen full of anxiety and expectation. Democracy Day as it is called, is meant to be a day that is worthy of note, a Day of celebration because it commemorates the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999 when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo took office as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after 16years of Military rule.

However, instead of celebrating 10years of uninterrupted democratic governance which many patriots, over the years, fought and won to enthrone even by laying down their lives, while others suffered incarcerations and untold hardships, Nigerians have nothing to celebrate.

While it is true that the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary celebrate what they call “Democracy Day”, the entire masses see the day as a day the three tiers of government mark their success in plugging the entire citizens into more hardship, suffering and agony.

We cannot celebrate a day which marks 10years of Human wrongs. We cannot celebrate government that has no focus and no plans for the timid society. We cannot when the poor are suffering, and living in perpetual state of decay. How does one celebrates democracy when, while the poor think about how to get the next meal to sustain them to the next minute, some group of persons are thinking of how to en-mass wealth and others thinking of buying fleet of cars?

I bet you, Nigerians cannot celebrate when human rights record remain poor and officials at all levels continue to commit serious abuses. A country where security forces commit rape and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls with impunity, where prisons are overcrowded, where forty percent of complaints received by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) relate to torture and extra judicial killings by the Nigeria Police and other individuals and where a whole Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige was murdered cannot be celebrated. Nobody expects celebration when Lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Nigeria face legal challenge not experienced by non-LGTB residents.

Who expects people living with HIV/AIDS to celebrate when discrimination against them is widespread and HIV/AIDS is blamed on immoral conducts and persons living with HIV/AIDS are often refused health care or lose their jobs?

As the government marks this year “Democracy Day” it should be noted that the masses are not happy and cannot join in celebrating in a nation where there is outright hunger and starvation, an economy where eventually everything is rising up daily, the educational system is in a shamble, a country where the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.

As long as Nigerians continue to wallow in abject poverty and grave human rights abuses and as the nation continue to experience a rape of its democracy and unrest in the Niger-Delta, May 29 tagged Democracy Day will continue to be for those in Aso Rock, State Government Houses, their family members, Government Officials and their beneficiaries and not for all Nigerians.

As Samuel Togbolo once puts it, “When it comes to a time where we will all celebrate, even the birds in the air, the green leaves, and all living creatures will join hands to celebrate to a more purposeful Democracy Day in the future and not this rhetoric’s of May 29 called Democracy Day”.
