GRAY COURT, S.C. -- A 2-year-old boy remained in the hospital in critical condition Wednesday after he was found unconscious and bruised in a Gray Court home filled with dozens of dead and dying animals.

CBS affiliate WSPA reports that Laurens County deputies were called to the home Tuesday evening after the boy's mother, Savannah V. Morgan, said the boy had choked.


She later said she dropped the child.Authorities say the 25-year-old Morgan physically abused the boy, causing him to suffer bleeding in the brain."">Two other children, a 1-year-old and 2-year-old, inside the home were taken into DSS custody, WSPA reported.Lt. Scott Franklin says Animal Control officers seized dozens of dead animals, including 48 rats and 10 python snakes.Eighty percent of the animals were dead, WSPA reported.


Morgan has since been charged with three counts of child neglect and one count of child abuse and cruelty to animals. It was not clear if she has an attorney.

When the reception desk is staffed by a robot dinosaur, the chances of a room upgrade are going to be fairly slim.

That hasn't stopped the first guests checking in to what's billed as the world's first robot hotel.

The five-star Japanese Henn-na Hotel -- a name that translates as Strange Hotel -- this week opened its doors to bemused visitors to Huis Ten Bosch, a theme park in Nagasaki Prefecture.

Humanoid robots greet Japanese-speaking guests at reception, while English-speaking guests are met, for reasons that aren't exactly clear, by a robotic dinosaur.

The robots are said to be able to engage in intelligent conversations.

More functional droids are on hand to cart luggage to the hotel's 72 rooms, staff luggage lockers and clean.

Tipping, thankfully, does not compute.

The hotel is currently in its first phase. A second stage is due to be completed in 2016 adding an additional 72 rooms.

When the hotel was first announced, Huis Ten Bosch President Hideo Sawada said he hoped robots would eventually run 90% of the property.

"In the future, we're hoping to build 1,000 similar hotels around the world," he said, according to Japan's Nikkei News.

Other features will help make Henn-na the most futuristic low-cost hotel in the industry, according to the company.

Guestroom doors are accessed by facial-recognition technology.

Amenities provided in rooms will be kept minimal. Guests can request items through a tablet when needed.

Instead of air-conditioning, a radiation panel will detect body heat in rooms and adjust the temperature.

Solar power and other energy-saving features will be used to reduce operating costs.

Bid for your room

Room rates will vary depending on demand.

Instead of being presented with a fixed price, guests will bid for rooms during peak season. The highest bidders will secure rooms, though there will be a price cap on bidding.

The hotel says room fees at opening will be from JPY7,000 ($60) for a single room to JPY18,000 ($153), the highest possible price after bidding, for a triple room.

Superior and deluxe rooms will cost more.

Darkode Shutdown: Former FireEye Intern Accused Of Creating $65,000 Android Malware

Share"">One of the more successful English-speaking cybercrime forums, Darkode, was shut down today and 28 arrests of individuals linked to the site made across the world, the FBI and Europol confirmed this morning. Charges were filed in the US against 12 individuals.

They included the apparent Darkode creator, 27-year-old Wisconsin resident Daniel Placek, an alleged admin, Swedish 27-year-old Johan Anders Gudmunds, and the accused creator of Facebook Spreader, malware designed to ensnare users of the social network into a massive botnet – a network of infected machines.In one of the more surprising twists in the case, FORBES understands that one of those charged spent four months interning as a mobile malware researcher at FireEye, a top US cybersecurity firm that’s received investment from the CIA’s In-Q-Tel, Goldman Sachs and Sequoia Capital, and has helped numerous companies recover from major breaches, including that ofSony Pictures last year. That same individual, 20-year-old Morgan Culbertson, has been accused of creating and selling the Dendroid malware, targeted at Google’s Android operating system. The US Attorney for Western District of Pennsylvania confirmed to FORBES the accused was the same Morgan Culbertson as the one listed onLinkedIn here. According to that page and court filings, he was selling his malware at the same time as working at FireEye.FireEye had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. One major concern for the company might be that Culbertson could have used confidential FireEye research to hone his malware.

The firm has strong expertise in mobile security and has repeatedly highlighted weaknesses in Android, as well as Apple’s iPhone. Culbertson would’ve learned a lot during his four months interning, whether for good or bad.

In search of peace? Maybe it's time to move to Iceland.

According to the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace, the thinly populated island in the midst of the North Atlantic has retained its place as the most peaceful country in the world.

The institute released its Global Peace Index for 2015 this week, which ranks 162 nations around the globe based on factors like the level of violent crime, involvement in conflicts and the degree of militarization.

The Economist's Safe Cities Index 2015 ranks major world cities across a range of categories. Though 12th in overall safety, the study called San Francisco the overall fifth-best city in which to live. It's pretty nice to visit, too.

Six out of the top 10 most peaceful countries were European, with Denmark and Austria holding the second and third spots.

"Europe maintained its position as the most peaceful region in the world, supported by a lack of domestic and external conflicts," the report said.

But that glowing review is helped by the fact that violence-plagued Ukraine is lumped into a different region: Russia and Eurasia.

U.S. in bottom half of rankings
Ukraine suffered the second biggest deterioration in its rating over the past year as pro-Russian separatists clashed with government forces.

The only country that fared worse was Libya, which has "sunk into a low-level civil war between Islamist and nationalist groups," the report said.

War-ravaged Syria remained at the bottom of the rankings. And Iraq, the other country where the Islamic militant group ISIS holds large areas of territory, dropped below South Sudan and Afghanistan to second last place.

The United States is in the bottom half of the index, scoring badly in terms of militarization, homicides and fear of violence. Its ranking improved somewhat from a year earlier, though, rising from 101st place to 94th.

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP)

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) promote capacity building within organisations in 51 countries by providing fellowships for training and education for professionals. The NFP is initiated and fully funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the budget for development cooperation.

The NFP has three sub programmes for individual fellowships:

Aim of the NFP

The NFP aims to help increase both the number and the competencies of skilled staff at a wide range of government and non-government organisations.

Each embassy has its own focus area to support the development goals of the Netherlands in each NFP country. The overall objective is to spend 35% of the budget on grants and study programmes in food security and private sector development.

The fellowships are further prioritised as follows:

50% of the budget is for applications from Sub Saharan Africa.
50% of fellowships has to be awarded to female applicants.
The fellowship

An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that the fellow should continue to receive during the study period. The allowance is a contribution towards the costs of living, the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel, insurance and thesis research. If applicable, the fellowship holder is expected to cover the difference between the actual costs and the amount of the personal NFP allowances.

The fellowships are awarded in a very competitive selection to highly motivated professionals who are in a position to introduce the newly-acquired skills and knowledge into their employing organisation.

For whom?

The NFP is meant for professionals who are nationals of and work and live in one of the 51 NFP countries. The countries have been classified into two categories (I and II). Category I countries are priority countries and will receive more fellowships.

Candidates have to be nominated by their employer to be eligible for the fellowship. There also has to be a clear need for training within the context of the organisation.

Criteria

You must meet a number of criteria that support the aim of the NFP to be eligible for a fellowship.

To be eligible you:

must be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list;
must have an employer’s statement that complies with the format EP-Nuffic has provided. All information must be provided and all commitments that are included in the format must be endorsed in the statement;
must not be employed by an organisation that has its own means of staff-development. Organisations that are considered to have their own means for staff development are for example:
multinational corporations (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft),
large national and/or a large commercial organisations,
bilateral donor organisations (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid),
multilateral donor organisations, (e.g. a UN organization, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB),
international NGO’s (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care);
must have an official and valid passport;
must not receive more than one fellowship for courses that take place at the same time;
must have a government statement that meets the requirements of the country in which the employer is established (if applicable).

Academic Excellence Scholarships ($10,000-$20,000)

La Trobe's Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) cover tuition fees for high-achieving international students accepted into our undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs. Worth between $10,000 and $20,000, these scholarships are paid across a maximum of two semesters (or 12 months).

If you receive this scholarship, you still need to pay for any difference in fees for your first two semesters, fees for the rest of your course, and your Overseas Student Health Cover. To continue receiving your scholarship into your second semester, you must maintain a C grade average.

You must be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand and be applying to start an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program. PhD applicants are asked to also submit a 6 page proposal on the research they would want to undertake for the thesis. This should include their research question, the research methodology and a (provisional) theoretical framework. A list of topics is given in the PhD section.

Scholarships for a study period in Germany
Apart from full scholarships for participation in one of the above mentioned programmes a number of mobility scholarships for Master students are available each year. These scholarships are aimed at funding a study period in Germany. During such a study period abroad scholarship holders can participate in a Summer School at Ruhr-Univeristy Bochum, complete an internship with a German organization working in the field related to their studies or they can visit Ruhr-Univeristy Bochum during the completion phase of their Master Thesis for intensive supervision periods.
It is not necessary to apply for mobility scholarships before starting your studies. The application procedure for mobility scholarships will instead be announced to participants of the cooperating programmes.

The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) advertises a fully funded 3-year PhD position in water resources engineering. The project is co-funded by the Sino-Danish University Center (SDC) and includes a compulsory research stay of at least 9 months at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The research topic and the collaborative relationships with the Chinese partners will be defined in more detail with the successful candidate. Potential focus areas include arsenic contamination of natural groundwater and hydroeconomic modeling and optimization.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will have a background in earth and environmental sciences/engineering. The candidate will focus on selected water resources management problems in the Chinese context and will spend at least 9 months out of the 3 years in China, being affiliated with one CAS institute. The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching the SDC MSc program “Water and Environment” in Beijing. Willingness to travel and work in an international environment is essential. The candidate will work in a team consisting of scientists from DTU Environment and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Familiarity with Danish and Chinese water resources research environments is an advantage.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment

The advert, which was posted on Arbetsförmedlingen's website for se.x shop Oliver & Eva on Monday called for "driven and methodical intimacy gadget testers" with "patience and a passion for technical equipment" to apply to the company.It invited would-be employees who ideally had "previous experience of pleasure" to submit their CVs, stating that successful applicants would be asked to collect discreetly-packaged s.ex toys from their nearest post office, before testing and reviewing them. The Stockholm-based entrepreneur, 31, said he was "confused and disappointed" that the agency decided to take the position off its website. One woman was hospitalized for days after her jeans caused her to lose feeling in her legs, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

The study said that squatting in skinny jeans can damage nerves and muscles in the legs.

The 35-year-old woman had spent her day helping a relative move, squatting for hours as she emptied closets. When she was walking home that night, her feet grew numb, and she tripped and fell. Immobilized, she spent hours on the ground before she was found and rushed to the hospital.

Doctors were forced to cut the jeans off her calves because they had become so swollen.

The doctors found that the jeans had prevented blood from flowing to her leg muscles, causing swelling, which compressed the nerves. She lost circulation in her lower legs and couldn't move her ankles or toes properly, according to the study.

After four days on an IV, she could walk again and was released from the hospital.

So if you don't want to be a fashion victim, think twice before wiggling into a too-tight pair of skinny jeans.

There are still areas of the world that don't have adequate access to electricity. This means at night-time, entire communities are plunged into darkness unless they use costly, dangerous and polluting kerosene lanterns. We recently wrote about the Morro da Mineira Project, which has harnessed the energy of soccer players to power floodlights in Brazilian favelas. In South Africa, the recycled Repurpose school bags come equipped with solar panels to provide a renewable light source for kids in disconnected regions.

Despite the long distances walked to school every day, many children in poverty-stricken communities can't afford to buy their own bag to carry their books and homework. Repurpose has created a stylish and sturdy all-purpose backpack out of 100% recycled material from old plastic bags. Attached to the top is a small solar panel that's capable of capturing the sun's energy while they walk to school. When they arrive back home, the bag is capable of powering a small lamp for up to 12 hours so that they can complete their studies at night.

Repurpose works with no-fee schools that lack basic supplies, as well as ‘giving partners’ who are willing to fund the creation and delivery of the backpacks. After making a match, the schools are able to place orders to get the right sizes and quantity of bags for their pupils.

Sleepless nights are a given for new parents: when a baby awakes in the night, the soothing voice of a mother or father is most likely the only suitable remedy. Now, SleepHero is a sound-activated mobile app which enables parents to reassure their children in the night, without even having to wake up. The app uses a repertoire of lullabies recorded in the voice of a parent, which play automatically when the child stirs, easing them back to sleep.


To begin, parents download the app onto their smartphone or tablet. They can choose from a selection of preloaded nursery rhymes or select their child’s favorite book. The selected text then appears on screen, prompting the user to record the song or story in their own voice. Parents can adjust the amount of noise needed for the app to be triggered into playing, and the length of time the recording should run for.

Parents can also choose from a selection of white noises if their baby responds better to those sounds. The app was developed by father of two Rob Tong, who was searching for a solution which would enable both parents and child to get a good nights sleep.

India’s ICICI bank is determined to make banking as simple as possible for its customers. The Mumbai-based bank already enables customers to transfer money, check their bank balance and top up phone credit using their smartphone and Twitter account. Now, ICICI customers can access their accounts and make transactions using only their voice, which is their new password.

Customers register a ‘voice print’ which is stored on the bank’s database. Each sample has over 100 characteristics — including voice modulation, accent, pronunciation and speed — making it impossible to imitate. When the customer telephones the bank from their registered number, the bank uses voice recognition to determine if the voice is a match. The customer’s unique voice therefore functions as their new password, replacing other authentication methods such as card numbers, personal addresses or security questions.

The service will be available to 33 million existing customers. Could voice authentication be used as a security measure by other businesses?

Dirty power: Sweden wants your garbage for energy
Every day, some 300 trucks arrive at a plant outside the city of G?teborg on the west coast of Sweden. They carry garbage, but they are not there to dump the cargo. Instead, they deliver it to the plant’s special ovens, which burn it, providing heat to thousands of local homes.

“The only fuel we use is waste,” says Christian L?whagen, a spokesman for Renova, the local government-owned energy company operating the plant. “It provides one-third of heat for households in this region.” Across Sweden, 950,000 homes are heated by trash; this lowly resource also provides electricity for 260,000 homes across the country, according to statistics from Avfall Sverige, Sweden’s national waste-management association.

Sweden imports waste from European neighbors to fuel waste-to-energy program
It’s not that Swedish decision-makers foresaw the need to safely dispose of garbage when they started building a countrywide network of district heating plants a generation ago, but it turned out to be a fortuitous move when public concern over trash in landfills prompted the country to rethink its garbage-disposal policies. Today putting waste on the trash heap is banned, which means that municipalities have to sort, recycle and, yes, burn, their residents’ garbage. As a result, waste now constitutes 19 percent of the fuel used by district-heating plants, which heat half of Sweden’s households and also use biomass such as leftover tree branches from the logging industry. That makes Sweden the world leader in energy generated from garbage; it is followed by, in order, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway and Finland.
