So it comes as no surprise that Zimbabwe is scrapping its local currency in favor of the U.S. dollar, reports the Telegraph.

Zimbabweans will be able to exchange their almost worthless local currency for the American dollar from Monday until the end of September.

The U.S. dollar has been used in the country since 2009, but now the local currency is being officially phased out.

People with accounts of up to 175 quadrillion — 175,000,000,000,000,000 — will be paid $5.

Those with more in the bank will get an exchange rate of $1 to 35 quadrillion.

Hyper-inflation has long ruined the Zimbabwe currency.

In 2008, the country printed its highest ever banknote, a 100 trillion dollars.

This was enough to buy a weekly bus ticket.

White woman 'posed as black civil right leader' in years-long deception

A prominent US civil rights activist who claimed African-American descent has been outed by her own parents as a white woman who deliberately lied about her race.

A prominent civil rights activist in the United States is facing investigation after her parents accused her of falsely passing herself off as black.
Rachel Dolezal, 37, has been the head of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, or NAACP, in Spokane, Washington, since January.

But her parents have now told US media that Ms Dolezal is in fact white – and has spent several years deliberately misleading the public and her colleagues about her race.
“She’s our birth daughter and we’re both of European descent,” her father, Larry Dolezal, told Buzzfeed. “We’re puzzled and it’s very sad.”
"Rachel has wanted to be somebody she's not. She's chosen not to just be herself but to represent herself as an African American woman or a biracial person. And that's simply not true," her mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, told KREM news, a television network.

Ms Dolezal is a prominent civil rights activists has made headlines several times since 2009 as the victim of hate crimes, including death threats and an alleged run-in with neo-Nazis in Idaho.
She also serves as the chair of a police oversight body called the office of police ombudsman commission and is a professor of Africana Studies at Eastern Washington University, where her research interests include “the intersection of race, gender and class in the contemporary diaspora with a specific emphasis on black women in visual culture.”
In her application for the police ombudsman commission she described herself as mixed-race white, black, and Native American, according to local media reports.


But her parents said Ms Dolezal is of German, Czech, and Swedish descent with a smattering of Native American ancestry.
Mr and Mrs Dolezal said their daughter had black siblings who were adopted and that she went to school in Mississippi, where the family were part of a mainly black community.
But they said she only began to claim African descent after divorcing her husband, who was also black, in 2004.
Her mother, Ruthanne, said Ms Dolezal began to “disguise herself” in 2006 or 2007.

Ms Dolezal later confirmed that Larry Dolezal was her father, and said she “understood” why people may feel was guilty of misrepresentations but declined to elaborate.
"It's more important for me to clarify that with the black community and with my executive board than it really is to explain it to a community that, quite frankly, don't really understand the definitions of race and ethnicity," she said in a television interview.
The revelations about her deception emerged in the course of a police investigation into hate mail allegedly sent to Ms Dolezal at the NAACP branch in Spokane, Washington.
Spokane city council said they were carrying out an investigation to “determine if city policies had been violated.”

Once you start up the digester, you can comfortably add your bio-degradable kitchen waste into the digester alongside the cow dung. As long as you feed the digester it will continue to generate gas. One can also feed in grasses cut into smaller sizes.

The covering that looks like greenhouse protects the digesters from children because kids love to bounce on the digester when it is full of gas they assume it is bouncing castle Secondly it makes the digester warmer thus generating biogas at a faster rate.

The first pictures shows a woman pouring in waste into the digester through the inlet. As long as you feed the digester it will continue to generate gas.

The second picture shows the biodigester with its funnel (where the feedstock goes through)

The third picture is the outlet where the slurry comes out from after the feedstock has been digested. This slurry is organic fertilizer and it is also sold by owners of the digester. If you have a farm, then you have a steady supply of organic fertilizer.

After married couple Linda and Erik Fridland fell in love with the same man, they decided he should move in with them - and their children.

The Local caught up with Hampus Engström - their new partner - as the family's blog started to go viral. Hampus Engström, 29, says that falling in love with a married couple was the last thing he expected when he met fellow taxi driver Erik Fridland through work.

 But after hanging out with the 35-year-old and his wife Linda, 34, he started to develop strong feelings for the couple. "I used to go round for dinner with them and I found I liked them both and we had so much in common.

We could just speak about everything, right from the beginning," he tells The Local. After an "uncomfortable" couple of months, he says he finally had a conversation with Linda when it became clear that she and her husband Erik both had feelings for him too. "I didn't think you could love more than one person at a time before this," says Engström.


 The three parents live together with their children in northern Sweden. Photo: Private They all decided to move in together in January 2013 with Hampus bringing his daughter - now five - to join the couple's nine-year-old twin boys and their thirteen-year-old son.

 The new family later launched their own taxi
business in Strömsund in Jämtland in northern Sweden along with a store selling children's clothes. "We work together and we live together. I sleep in the same bed as Linda and Erik. Yes, we have a sexual relationship.

We all have sex together". He says that the family decided to start blogging about their experiences to "show that there are other ways to live than those 'normal' relationships". "We have children, a house, a car and jobs. It is not all about sex, we do all the mundane things too," he adds.

 Polygamy - when a husband has more than one wife or vice versa - is illegal in Sweden, but there are no rules to stop groups of people living together. Sweden's Centre Party previously lobbied for a change in legislation, while it was part of the previous centre-right coalition government, but dropped its support for polygamy following rifts within the party.


 Engström says he is still hoping that the law will be adapted in future, to allow him to marry the Fridlands. "It is currently tricky for us in certain situations. When you go to the bank they are usually looking for two signatures, there isn't space for three.

Usually only two people get a mortgage so that was tricky for us but we managed to make it happen". Engström says he knows of "several other polyfamilies" living together in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe thanks to a strong Facebook community and thinks that the phenomenon is becoming more common. 


"I hope we will eventually be able to get married and that hotel staff won't find it so strange if three of us want to book a room and share a bed together."

(CNN) -- He rose from humble beginnings, worked his way through the local leagues before graduating to become a major player on the international stage, netting him millions of dollars along the way.
But this isn't a tale about a footballing hero. This is a story about one of modern sport's greatest villains -- the man dubbed the most notorious match-fixer in the world.

You may not be familiar with the name Wilson Raj Perumal but given how prolific he was, you might have watched one of the games he's fixed.

"I never really counted, but I think it should be between 80-100 football matches," Perumal told CNN's Don Riddell in his first-ever television interview.

Few doors seemed to be closed to Perumal.

"I was on the bench at times, and telling players what to do, giving orders to the coach. It was that easy. There was no policing whatsoever."

Officials were just as easy to target, he boasts, with "no barriers" when approaching select referees, while certain football associations would "welcome you with open arms," he added.
It was only after his arrest and subsequent conviction in 2011 -- his fourth for football-related crimes - - that Perumal started coming clean on his former life, with the poacher-turned-gamekeeper now helping European police combat match-fixing.

In all, Perumal claims to have pocketed around $5 million himself from match-fixing.

However, he lost it all gambling, perhaps explaining why the 49-year-old recently published an autobiography, "Kelong Kings," recounting his journey from rural Singapore to football's globetrotting Mr Fix-it.

"I had my boyhood dreams. I wanted to be a soldier but during my school days I got a criminal record and couldn't really pursue what I wanted to. And then I got attracted to betting when I was about 19-20 years old," he said.
"I kind of got hooked and I didn't want to lose ... so I started fixing local matches," he says.

Perumal plied his trade in Singapore's local football leagues in the late 1980s before joining what international crime-fighting organization INTERPOL recently described as "the world's most notorious match-fixing syndicate" allegedly headed by Tan Seet Eng -- better known as "Dan Tan," who is now reportedly in detention in Singapore.
As the Internet age dawned in the mid-1990s, so Perumal's match-fixing horizons expanded.

"We could see all these matches around the world ... I had the opportunity to target vulnerable countries ... people who were prone to accept bribes," he said.
"So I registered a company and started e-mailing associations and building relationships."

Zlatan surprises disabled team with trip to Brazil


When Sweden's intellectually disabled Swedish football team couldn't scrape together enough money to fly to the World Championships in Brazil, they found an unexpected guardian angel in the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The team contacted the Swedish footballer and asked if he could donate a game jersey to auction off.  "He said 'What the hell are you gonna do with another jersey? How much does it cost to get there?'" the team captain, Stefan Jonson, told the Hela Hälsingland newspaper.  When Jonsson said the team needed an extra 350,000 kronor ($50,900), Ibrahimovic simply asked for an account number.  Zlatan later told the official Swedish Football website that the decision was an easy one. "Football should be played by everyone, regardless of their gender or whether they're disabled. When we missed the World Cup, I was deeply disappointed, but when I heard about this 'unknown team', then I decided I'd do everything in my power to make sure they could experience it. It was an obvious decision." Sweden plays its first match against Brazil on Monday night, and will play against Japan and Saudi Arabia.  The INAS World Football Championship sees athletes with intellectual disabilities compete every four years, often in the same country as the World Cup.

AFRICAN POLITICIANS AT WORK.....

The dialysis unit of the Korle Bu Hospital in Accra ran out of water just as Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh’s elderly father was being hooked up to a machine. The nurses shrugged—there wasn’t much they could do. So Ohene Sarfoh had to hire a tanker truck to deliver water to hospital. This was earlier this year—boom time Ghana: steady economic growth, the façade of functioning institutions, the good-news story everyone wanted—but the biggest hospital in the country routinely ran out of water.

The boom is now officially over. Last week, Ghana announced plans to ask the International Monetary Fund for a bailout to prop up the country’s currency, which fell almost 40% against the dollar this year. News of the bailout was a surprise to most of the world: Ghana is Barack Obama’s “wonderful success story economically.” But the average Ghanaian could have told you something was wrong years ago.

People were worried in 2011: the Ghanaian economy grew by a record 15%, but few new jobs appeared. They were worried in 2012, when the blackout-prone Electricity Company of Ghana (also known as “Either Candle or Generator”) hiked rates by 70% as the government was forced to abandon pricey subsidies. Then in 2013, the government was paralyzed as the Supreme Court dealt with claims of election fraud—and earlier this year, middle-class Ghanaians started stuffing thousands of dollars under mattresses.

The world caught a glimpse of this when, right before their last match at the World Cup this year, Ghana’s players demanded their fees in dollars, in cash, up front. The vulgar carnival that followed—$3 million on a chartered jet, a player photographed kissing $100,000 in cash— was actually pretty prudent. The players wanted dollars because the Ghanaian cedi was by then the worst performing currency in the world, worse than those of Syria and South Sudan.

They wanted cash because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to get at their money without paying a crippling exchange rate. They wanted it up front because—well, Ghana’s full of government workers who haven’t been paid in months who could explain why. Middle-class Ghanaians routinely buy everything from property to inventory in dollars, so when the government put limits on foreign currency transactions in February, everyone started hoarding cash.



In Old Fadama, the country’s biggest slum, I watched as a man melted aluminum cans in a cauldron over an open flame, and tipped the molten metal into moulds. As the 20-lb. blocks cooled, he explained that he sold the recycled aluminum to guys who made cooking pots. This is what the economy looks like for 80% of Ghanaians: small scale, ingenious, and informal. The only real aluminum smelter in the country had to cut production during the World Cup to make sure there were no blackouts during Ghana’s matches.

The production of oil in 2010 spurred a great deal of optimism, and was supposed to fix everything. The government, the nation’s single biggest employer, spent like crazy, giving notoriously underpaid cops, soldiers, nurses and other government workers a raise in 2012. Salaries now consume 70% of Ghana’s tax revenue. Ghana’s economy slowed, and for three years, oil revenue has been coming in well below expectations.

Meanwhile a series of bloated government contracts involving both major political parties have come to define the boom years. A youth employment program spent $250 million in one year, without proof that any work actually got done. A development agency spent $15 million allegedly rearing guinea fowl and planting trees. The Ghana Revenue Authority paid a technology firm $23 million and got nothing in return. Meanwhile, at a major government ministry, I met a civil servant who has to bring printer paper into the office from home. Apparently, even local suppliers have stopped extending credit to the government.

Politicians seem detached from reality on the ground. There are claims that the Mahama administration, like previous governments, took so long to realize that the economy was tanking because economic statistics in Ghana are substandard bordering on fanciful—and that growth was always a statistical illusion to everyone but Ghana’s elite. Last month, when President John Mahama tweeted about the Ghanaian people making sacrifices to get through the economic slump, the Twitter account of the US Embassy in Accra replied:



For many Ghanaians, it’s like the boom never happened. “We’ve become so charmed by our own practice of democracy, by what the rest of the world says,” said Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh. “We’re being sold something that’s not really happening.”

Nigerian health authorities acknowledged Tuesday that they did not immediately quarantine a sick airline passenger who later died of Ebola, announcing that eight health workers who had direct contact with him were now in isolation with symptoms of the disease.

Ebola, which can cause victims to bleed from the eyes and mouths before a grisly death, has killed nearly 900 people across four countries in West Africa, a deeply impoverished region with severely limited medical resources.

The outbreak, which emerged in March, spread to Nigeria in late July when Patrick Sawyer, a 40-year-old American of Liberian descent, flew from Liberia's capital to the megacity of Lagos. The announcement that Sawyer was not immediately quarantined underscores concerns that West Africa is ill-equipped to contain such a disease.

By contrast, two American aid workers who were infected with Ebola in Liberia received an experimental drug and were flown in a chartered jet to Atlanta, where they are being treated in a hospital isolation unit. Ebola concerns in the U.S. have led some worried people to hospital emergency rooms, and prompted Ebola testing of at least six patients, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The tests that have completed have all been negative, the federal agency said Tuesday.

Experts say people infected with Ebola can spread the disease only through their bodily fluids and after they show symptoms. Since the incubation period can last up to three weeks, some of the Nigerians who treated Sawyer are only now showing signs of illness that can mimic many common tropical illnesses — fever, muscle aches and vomiting.

Initially authorities told reporters that the risk of any exposure to others was minimal because Sawyer was whisked into isolation after arriving at the airport with symptoms of Ebola.

But Lagos state health commissioner Jide Idris said Tuesday that the nature of his disease "was not known" the first day, and only after further investigation did they suspect Ebola. Sawyer's sister had died in Liberia from the disease, which has no proven cure or treatment.

"They went back to the history and they were like 'Oh, this is Liberia,' and that's why he was put into isolation," he told reporters. "So even in that window period it was possible that some of these people got infected."

A doctor who cared for Sawyer has tested positive for the disease, and seven other health workers are now showing symptoms so have been placed in isolation. They are among 14 people who had "serious direct contact" with Sawyer, most of them at the hospital, Idris said. Authorities say they are also following the conditions of 56 other people who had "primary contact" with Sawyer — presumably less at risk than those in the first group.

Ben Neuman, a virologist and Ebola expert at Britain's University of Reading, said doctors during an outbreak save lives "by responding bravely and quickly when someone is sick." That involves a measure of risk, as is seen now by the exposure in Nigeria.

"The thing to watch going forward is how this changes infection control practices in Nigeria and around the world if a situation like this occurs again," he said.

The official death toll for the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola now stands at 887, according to the World Health Organization. All but Sawyer have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, where government officials said hundreds of troops were being deployed across the country to enforce quarantines.

Three of six missionaries in isolation in a Liberian hospital have tested positive for the virus, including Spanish priest Miguel Pajares, according to Spain's San Juan de Dios hospital order, a Catholic humanitarian group that runs hospitals around the world.

Health officials in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, worked to prevent the virus from spreading in Lagos, where millions of people live in densely crowded conditions. The Lagos state health commissioner acknowledged that state health authorities need volunteers to help track down the people who may have come into contact with the eight suspected cases in quarantine.

"You may have two family contacts, you may have many family contacts," he said. "You need people who will go out and chase all these people."

Meanwhile, the second American Ebola patient arrived Tuesday in Atlanta from Liberia. Nancy Writebol, 59, was taken to Emory University Hospital, where she joined Dr. Kent Brantly, who arrived from Saturday.

Both aid workers were infected despite taking precautions as they treated Ebola patients at a clinic in Liberia.

Family members said both Americans have been improving after taking the experimental drug; the hospital has not released any information on their conditions. Writebol's employer, the SIM charity, said Tuesday that she remains in serious but stable condition.

The experimental treatment the two were given was developed with U.S. military funding by a San Diego company, using antibodies from lab animals that had been injected with parts of the Ebola virus. Tobacco plants in Kentucky are being used to make the drug, which hasn't yet been tested in humans.

It's impossible to know whether the drug saved these workers, stressed Dr. Tom Frieden, direct of the CDC in Atlanta.

"Every medicine has risks and benefits," he said to reporters at a health symposium in Kentucky. "Until we do a study, we don't know if it helps, if it hurts, or if it doesn't make any difference."

If this treatment works, it could create pressure to speed through testing and production to help contain the disease in Africa. Dozens of African heads of state were meeting with President Barack Obama on Tuesday at a summit in Washington. But it could take years before any treatment can be proven to be effective and safe.

question is: How many people here in the US have or had relatives from Africa come visit in the last few months? Makes you wonder if cases are already spreading because of travel to and from this country before anyone was aware.

July was a typically busy month in the world of African tech, with further launches by international players, funding for local companies, and many developments in the continent’s startup ecosystem.

Global players thinking big in Nigeria

It was another positive month in Africa for global taxi hailing app Uber, which a month after launching its low-cost uberX offering in Cape Town made Nigeria the second African country in which it operates by rolling out in Lagos. To inform residents about the app, Uber has appointed Nigerian hip-hop artist Ice Prince as its ambassador.

Another global firm launching in Nigeria, PayPal, confirmed the country’s oldest commercial bank FirstBank Nigeria as its official partner. PayPal in June became available in ten new markets, with Nigeria and Zimbabwe added to the platform to take the number of markets it operates in to 203.

BlackBerry is also busy in Nigeria, unveiling the Z3 smartphone in the country, offering users who buy the device free app downloads valued at US$50.

In South Africa, MasterCard launched MasterPass, allowing individuals in the country to make secure digital payments online. The service allows users to make payments without entering in payment details on every transaction.

South Africa also saw two of its official languages added to Gmail by Google, which launched 13 new languages, including Afrikaans and Zulu.

Busy month for the continent’s startups

Kenyan firm BRCK closed a US$1.2 million seed funding round in order to launch its modem-cum-router device aimed at solving last-mile connectivity issues in Africa. The company, a spinout from Kenyan crowdmapping firm Ushahidi, claims its device will bring a seamless internet connection to remote areas, a “critical innovation for a variety of sectors across Africa”.

The team behind last year’s StartupBus Africa event launched a new nonprofit – Ampion.org – which is organising five Venture Bus hackathons across Africa. StartupBus Africa last year saw a bus travel from Harare, Zimbabwe to Cape Town, South Africa, with eight startups born. This year, the concept will take place on a larger scale, with four buses travelling through 15 African countries.

The 40 finalists for startup pitching event DEMO Africa, which will this year take place in Lagos, Nigeria, were announced, with Nigerian entrepreneurs dominating the list of finalists. The 40 companies will pitch their startups live at the conference to an audience comprising VCs, investors, tech acquisition specialists, IT buyers and media.

A new incubator in Rwanda backed by mobile operator Tigo – “think” – opened applications to startups and developers from Rwanda and the rest of Africa. The incubator will select the best five teams for a six-month programme designed to support exceptional startups in developing new and innovative digital solutions.

Not long after I first met Warren Buffett back in 1991, I asked him to recommend his favorite book about business. He didn’t miss a beat: “It’s ‘Business Adventures,’ by John Brooks, ” he said. “I’ll send you my copy.” I was intrigued: I had never heard of “Business Adventures” or John Brooks.

Today, more than two decades after Warren lent it to me — and more than four decades after it was first published — “Business Adventures” remains the best business book I’ve ever read.


John Brooks is still my favorite business writer. (And Warren, if you’re reading this, I still have your copy.)

A skeptic might wonder how this out-of-print collection of New Yorker articles from the 1960s could have anything to say about business today. After all, in 1966, when Brooks profiled Xerox X +1.29% , the company’s top-of-the-line copier weighed 650 pounds, cost $27,500, required a full-time operator and came with a fire extinguisher because of its tendency to overheat.


A lot has changed since then.It’s certainly true that many of the particulars of business have changed. But the fundamentals have not. Brooks’s deeper insights about business are just as relevant today as they were back then. In terms of its longevity, “Business Adventures” stands alongside Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor,” the 1949 book that Warren says is the best book on investing that he has ever read.

It is d con*dom that failed in its primary duty

When I dropped out of school at 19 to start my first job in Hollywood, I didn't know anything and I had no idea where I'd end up. Thankfully, I was attached to some smart and forgiving people who let me learn under them. I suppose I also had good instincts. Within a few short years, I'd become a bestselling author, the director of marketing for a publicly traded company and got to work on a ton of cool projects. I've hired my fair share of people now (fired them too) and having been through the ringer of young-person-just-starting-out-in-a-new-field close to a half dozen times, I figure I know it well enough to talk about it.

It goes like this: You're scared but overconfident, clueless but eager to learn, just glad to be given a shot and you don't want to screw it up. I tried to think of a few things I wish I'd been told when I was just starting, things that would have saved me some tough lessons. These are the things I still tell myself.

They are:

Calm down.

Assess the terrain. Sit there and observe. Figure out who the dominant personality types are, what makes them tick and how things really work. Don't act, don't give your opinion, don't do anything until this has been done. When you understand the people, politics and the business (eg, the terrain) then you can begin to get to work.

Always say less than necessary.

The point isn't just to prove that you're capable, but also that you're sane. In fact, if you had to pick between the two, being well-adjusted the better one. You can teach people how to do things. You can't make them normal. In other words, leave your crazy at home.

Stay on the radar. Your excuses need to be just not-flimsy enough that they don't seem completely full of shit. If it passes that test, then any question, any update, any offer to worth using to stay in the frame.

Don't be too good at being an assistant (or an intern). In fact, the whole point is to be too good to be wasting your time and other people's time at administrative shit that you mess up anyway.

Remember, most people on the Internet are losers and outsiders. "Don't go expecting Plato's Republic," Marcus Aurelius would remind himself. Don't go expecting Seth Godin, Jeff Jarvis or [insert industry blogger here]. Whatever you do, don't quote them. Your job is to successfully mitigate their vision of how the World Magically Should Be with how it Realistically Is. If you can do that, you're more revolutionary than they will ever be.

If you're working all the time -- that is, if you don't get to leave the office until midnight and got there at 5 a.m. -- you're doing something wrong. You're either working for an idiot who is going to burn you out, or you're the idiot and you haven't figured out the short cuts. For a while I had 3 full time jobs (ones you'd have killed for) at the same time. I wasn't working all hours of the same, I just did them simultaneously.

Steer clear of the charlatans, lifers, and the toxic. You become who you know.

On the same note, you can probably skip most of the "social" activities the job requires. Introductory calls, lunch meetings, parties and conferences are usually a waste. Don't be friendless and don't be rude, but these things are mostly collective effort to waste time and forget how unhappy everyone is. Besides, being the conspicuous absence can help build your reputation, if done right.

Ask yourself: "Am I saying this because I want to prove how smart I am or am I saying this because it needs to be said?" When you're just getting started, it's usually the former.

Forget credit. Fucking forget it so hard you're glad when other people get it instead of you. After all, that's your job -- to make other people look better.

Save your money. The smaller your nut each month, the less pressure you'll feel to put up with stupid shit. It gives you the luxury of not being dependent on the system. It lets you see through it. (see: The Dress Suit Bribe)

Write your own rules. Forget the bullshit ones (dress code, hours, hierarchy etc), follow the critical ones (getting results, never offend the wrong person) and do whatever you want. Seriously.

Educate yourself. No one is ever going to teach you enough or hand it to you on a platter. Books and articles, and ask questions -- an endless amount of them. People love to give advice and they love people who they don't feel they have to drag to the next level.

Make it happen. Nobody cares what it will take, what problems this causes for you, what personal stuff you have going on. Just get it done. You can tell us what you went through...after.

Have an exit strategy. Know how this all fits into your grand strategy, this is the Start-Up of You. But also have the easily explainable, non-threatening goal that you tell people so you can maneuver in peace. If you're working at a management company, don't tell everyone your goal is to be a stand up comedian. The grand strategy is just for you.

Don't expect anyone else to understand. [/b]It's your job to find a release and an outlet for the stress and the feelings. Never forget: the crazy stays at home.

[b]Relax.

Most importantly, remember that you are not special. There were a million other kids on this path before you and there will be another million after. Most of them either went nowhere or turned out to be nothing. Even the successful ones might still flame out or be assholes. What does this mean? It means don't get high on yourself. Don't tell yourself a story. Be quiet, work hard, and stay healthy. It's not ambition or skill that is going to set you apart -- notice I didn't mention those things a single time. It's safe to assume you've already got them covered. What will set you apart, what is rare, is humility, diligence and self-awareness.

Sweden Democrat MP Anna Hagwall has been censured by the party after saying that women should "stop whining" about domestic violence and that they shoulder the responsibility to end the abuse.

These types of statement signal a high level of naivete and it's obvious this person shouldn't handle these kind of questions," Sweden Democrat party spokesperson Paula Bieler told The Local.

Hagwall uttered the comments when asked by Sveriges Radio her view on equality and men's violence against women. The Swedish MP, one of four female Sweden Democrats sitting in parliament, later declined to retract her position in an interview with the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily.

"You should deal with it at an early stage and think twice about who you marry and move in with," she said. "Often these men show tendencies of treating women around them badly, their mothers and sisters."

Hagwall claimed that women need to be more aware and take better care of themselves. They also need to exercise cunning as they are generally at a physically disadvantage.

The 61-year-old, who emigrated to Sweden from Hungary in 1972, pointed out that the welfare system offers a great deal of support for women in abusive relationships.

"All you have to do is go to the social services and let them know what's going on. You do actually get help in Sweden and don't have to let it end in the woman being murdered," she told DN.

She did however point out that the men also have some responsibility for the situation, explaining that it is not acceptable to break down a woman or a family and that these men deserved to be dumped.

"I feel sorry for the women as victims but it's still their darned responsibility as well," she told DN.

The Sweden Democrats told The Local that Hagwall's views did not represent those of the party as a whole.

"We believe there should be an even stronger support system in place for women who are being abused in order to encourage them to go through the legal process and achieve justice."
