How black Americans are dying from coronavirus – and institutional racism is blocking testing A senior African American politician has denounced as “devastating” a report that black people made up up to 70 per cent of coronavirus deaths in her city. As anecdotal reports are increasingly being backed up by data to show people of colour in the US make up a disproportionate number of those both being infected and dying from the virus, Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot launched a new effort to urge people to remain at home to try and limit its spread. “It’s devastating to see those numbers,” Ms Lightfoot said. “And knowing they’re not just numbers, they’re lives. They’re families and communities that have been shattered.” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/coronavirus-deaths-black-community-racism-tests-chicago-lori-lightfoot-a9451441.html |
The Trump administration has offered a German medical company “large sums of money” for exclusive access to a Covid-19 vaccine, German media have reported. The German government is trying to fight off what it sees as an aggressive takeover bid by the US, the broadsheet Die Welt reports, citing German government circles. The US president had offered the Tübingen-based biopharmaceutical company CureVac “large sums of money” to gain exclusive access to their work, wrote Die Welt. According to an anonymous source quoted in the newspaper, Trump was doing everything to secure a vaccine against the coronavirus for the US, “but for the US only” The German government was reportedly offering its own financial incentives for the vaccine to stay in the country. When approached about the report by the Guardian, the German health ministry would only confirm the accuracy of the quotes attributed to one of its spokespersons in the article. “The federal government is very interested in vaccines and antiviral agents against the novel coronavirus being developed in Germany and Europe,” the spokesperson quoted in the original article had said. “In this regard the government is in an intensive exchange with the company CureVac.” The German health ministry spokesperson declined the opportunity to correct any inaccuracies in Die Welt’s account. With its headquarters in the south-western German city of Tübingen, CureVac also has sites in Frankfurt and Boston in the US. Linked with the German health ministry, it works closely with the Paul Ehrlich Institute, a research institution and medical regulatory body that is subordinate to the German health ministry. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/15/trump-offers-large-sums-for-exclusive-access-to-coronavirus-vaccine |

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s police chief is warning that Boko Haram extremists are building bombs in iPads and cellphones and leaving them for people to pick up. Inspector Gen. Solomon E. Arase issued the warning while announcing five suspects were arraigned Thursday in Abuja High Court in connection with twin bombings in Nigeria’s capital that killed 15 people on Oct 2.Arase said they were arrested in Abuja with “dangerous bombing tools” including high-tech gadgets. He warned Nigerians to avoid temptation and not pick up abandoned iPads, phones or laptops “as terrorists now use these items in manufacturing bombs.”Nigeria’s home-grown extremist group Boko Haram is known for using kidnap victims strapped with explosives in suicide bombings that have killed hundreds in recent months, including in neighboring countries. http://nypost.com/2015/10/22/abandoned-ipads-in-nigeria-could-be-boko-haram-bombs/ |

Hackers threaten to expose 37 million ‘Ashley Madison’ cheaters A dating website that helps married people cheat has been hit by hackers who are reportedly threatening to release data about millions of customers. Ashley Madison, which uses the advertising slogan “Life is short. Have an affair,” said Monday it had been attacked but did not say which data had been compromised. Brian Krebs, the blogger behind Krebs on Security, first reported the breach late on Sunday. Krebs said the hackers have already posted some data stolen from Ashley Madison, and are threatening to release all customer records if their demands are not met. “We were recently made aware of an attempt by an unauthorized party to gain access to our systems,” Avid Life Media, the parent company of Ashley Madison, said in a statement. The company said that while it had stringent security measure in place, they “have unfortunately not prevented this attack.” “At this time, we have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorized access points,” company said. “We are working with law enforcement agencies, which are investigating this criminal act.” Ashley Madison is a dating website, with one important twist: Instead of connecting eligible singles, it caters to married people interested in conducting affairs. The site claims to have 37 million members, and has in the past bragged about its data security. The site is an obvious target for hackers. After all, its databases have enormous potential for use in blackmail schemes. The hackers — or hacker, perhaps — appear to be upset over the company’s “full delete” service, which promises to completely erase a user’s profile, and all associated data, for a $19 fee. “Full Delete netted [Avid Life Media] $1.7 million in revenue in 2014. It’s also a complete lie,” the hackers were quoted as saying in a manifesto published by Krebs. “Users almost always pay with credit card; their purchase details are not removed as promised, and include real names and address, which is of course the most important information the users want removed.” The hackers called themselves the “Impact Team.” If Ashley Madison is not taken offline, they have threatened to “release customer records, including profiles with all the customers’ secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions, real names and addresses, and employee documents and emails.” The hack follows a similar event in March, when more than 3.5 million people’s sexual preferences, fetishes and secrets were exposed after dating site Adult FriendFinder was hacked. Adult FriendFinder, which boasts 64 million members, claims to have “helped millions of people find traditional partners, Player groups, threesomes, and a variety of other alternative partners.” Included in the exposed personal information are customers’ email addresses, usernames, passwords, birthdays and zip codes, in addition to their sexual preferences. http://fox2now.com/2015/07/20/hackers-threaten-to-expose-37-million-ashley-madison-cheaters/ |

8. On March 13, this famous holdout is going up on the auction block. When the Ballard Blocks mall was coming into Seattle's Ballard neighborhood in 2005, owner Edith Macefield refused an offer of nearly $1 million for her modest 1,000-square-foot, century-old house. It may have inspired the Pixar movie "Up." As a promotion in 2009, Pixar parent Disney outfitted the house with a bundle of balloons like in the movie. Something of a folk hero, Macefield died in her own home at age 86 in 2008, but willed the house to Barry Martin, the superintendent on the construction site, who had gradually become her friend and caretaker. Martin sold the house to Reach Returns, a group which had plans to elevate the house but keep it intact, but the property fell into foreclosure. The surrounding mall was designed to eventually overtake the space so if the owner of the mall buys the property, it's not looking good for this little wood house that could.

In China, they're known as "nail houses" -- homes where owners refuse to accept compensation offered by road builders and developers in exchange for the demolition of their property. The dwellings stand like a nail that refuses to be hammered down -- a not uncommon phenomenon as some homeowners resist dispossession of their land or hold out for more money. 1.A nail house sits in the middle of a road under construction in Nanning in April 2015.
