As her religion faces persecution across the Middle East, a Christian woman explains why she faces hanging in Pakistan for the crime of "blasphemy"

To her neighbors, Aasiya Noreen "Asia" Bibi, a poor mother of five in the tiny village of Ittan Wali in central Pakistan, was guilty - guilty of being Christian in a nation that is 97% Muslim. For four years she has languished in a prison cell for this, facing death by hanging.
Her new memoir, "Blasphemy," was dictated to her husband from jail, who relayed it to French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet. Fifty percent of the proceeds the book will go to support Bibi and her family.
More and more people join the crowd as they push me towards the home of the village headman. I recognize the house - it's the only one that has a garden with grass growing in it.
"Listen, all of you, this Christian has dirtied the water in the well by drinking from our cup and dipping it back several times. Now the water is unclean and we can't drink it! Because of her!"
"That's right, you're just a filthy Christian! You've contaminated our water and now you dare speak for the Prophet! Stupid *****, your Jesus didn't even have a proper father, he was a bastard, don't you know that."
"Filthy *****! We're taking you back to the village! You insulted our Prophet! You'll pay for that with your life!"
They throw me to the ground. The village imam speaks to me: "I've been told you've insulted our Prophet.
You know what happens to anyone who attacks the holy Prophet Mohammed. You can redeem yourself only by conversion or death."
"I haven't done anything! Please! I beg you! I've done nothing wrong!"
The qari with his long, well-combed beard, turns to Musarat and the three women who were there on the day of the falsa harvest.
Asia Bibi: "Did she speak ill of Muslims and our holy Prophet Mohammed?"
"Yes, she insulted them," replies Musarat, and the others join in: "It's true, she insulted our religion."
"If you don't want to die," says the young mullah, "you must convert to Islam. Are you willing to redeem yourself by becoming a good Muslim?"
Sobbing, I reply: "No, I don't want to change my religion. But please believe me, I didn't do what these women say, I didn't insult your religion. Please have mercy on me."
I put my hands together and plead with him. But he is unmoved.

"You're lying! Everyone says you committed this blasphemy and that's proof enough. Christians must comply with the law of Pakistan, which forbids any derogatory remarks about the holy Prophet. Since you won't convert and the Prophet cannot defend himself, we shall avenge him."
He turns on his heel and the angry crowd falls on me. I'm beaten with sticks and spat at. I think I'm going to die. Then they ask me again: "Will you convert to a religion worthy of the name?"
"No, please, I'm a Christian, but I beg you..."
And they go on beating me with the same fury as before. I was barely conscious and could hardly feel the pain of my wounds by the time the police arrived.

Two policemen threw me in their van, to cheers from the angry crowd, and a few minutes later I was in the police station in Nankana Sahib.
In the police chief's office they sat me down on a bench. I asked for water and compresses for the wounds on my legs, which were streaming with blood.
A young policeman threw me an old dishcloth and spat out at me: "Here, and don't get it everywhere."
One of my arms really hurt and I thought it might be broken. Just then I saw the qari come in with Musarat and her gang.
With me sitting there they told the police chief that I insulted the Prophet Mohammed. From outside the police station I could hear shouts: "Death to the Christian!"
After writing up the report the policeman turned and called to me in a nasty voice: "So what have you got to say for yourself?"
"I'm innocent! It's not true! I didn't insult the Prophet!"
Immediately after I'd protested my innocence I was manhandled into the police van and driven away.
During the journey I passed out from pain and only came back to myself as we were arriving at Sheikhupura prison, where I was thrown into a cell. Since that day I haven't left prison.

A 35-year-old Kenyan man has been sentenced to 14 years in in prison for raping a cow.
Jackson Karuga is said to have allegedly engaged in the act with his neighbor’s cow.
Issuing the ruling in a court in the central part of Kenya, Principal Magistrate Wendy Micheni Kagendo said the evidence adduced by five witnesses, including a veterinary officer, was direct and concrete.
The cow’s owner, Ann Wanjiru, told the court that on the day she had gone to milk her cow at 5:00 when she saw a pair of trousers at the shed’s entrance.
She later saw Karuga busy in the act, though he did not see her. Wanjiru said she left the scene and went to alert neighbors who caughtKaruga with his pants down.
In mitigation, Karuga said his bachelorhood forced him to commit the offence. He added that he was living under stress since his father passed away last year and that he could not afford to marry.
Karuga further claimed that he was providing school fees for his siblings and taking care of his ailing mother.
However, the magistrate dismissed his mitigation saying that the fact that he was not married did not mean he would have married the cow, and that it was not reason enough for him to resort to bestiality.
She condemned the act saying bestiality cases are rampant in the region and a deterrent is needed.
The magistrate further said the cases of bestiality are a sign of moral decay in the society and the sentence would serve as deterrent to others with similar plans.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday faulted the statement credited to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, that the union demanded for N92bn, describing the claim as false.
ASUU said it never demanded such amount as earned allowances in the 2009 agreement it reached with the Federal Government.
Okonjo-Iweala had on Wednesday in Minna, said the Federal Government couldn't meet the N92bn allowances as demanded by ASUU.
The univerisity lecturers, in a statement by the University of Ibadan branch chairman, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, described the amount mentioned by the minister as "a the imagination of the minister."
Ajiboye explained that the earned allowances, the union and the governemnt calculated in the 2009 agreement, amounted to N87b, which covered allowances for three and half years for the lecturers in the nation's universities.
He said, the N87bn was a compromise made by ASUU to scale down from N127bn.
He added that the N87bn was computed based on 15 per cent of the yearly recurrent expenditures of some nation's universities.
The statement stated, "I want Nigerians to ask the minister where she got her figure of N92bn from.
There was never a time that ASUU made a demand that is up to N92bn. I think the N92bn is just the imagination of the minister.
"But that is not to say that this government did not enter into an agreement with us.

This is a government that signed an agreement with us on January 24, 2012 to the effect that they would inject N100bn as funding into the universities in the first one month and that before the end of 2012, they would inject another N300bn.''

A 14-year-old schoolboy has been jailed after he barricaded his teacher inside a classroom then laughed as he sexually assaulted her.

Desperate colleagues tried to break down the door when they heard the teacher screaming for help but could not stop the boy, now 15, from Wrexham.
Staff fought their way into the school's computer room and pulled the 'distressed and terrified' teacher to safety.
The teenager, who admitted sexual assault and was sentenced to four years' youth detention, had put his hand up her skirt and forced himself on her.
Prosecutor Karl Scholz told Mold Crown Court:'The teacher and the boy were in the classroomwhen he closed the door and snapped the latchshut.

'He told her he had things on his mind and took hold of her and hugged her.
'She managed to get away and wanted to leavethe room but realised the door was locked.
'The schoolboy then put his hand up the teacher's skirt and carried out a serious sexual assault on her.'
Mr Scholz said staff outside could hear their colleague scream and the boy laughing.
When they eventually got in the teacher was 'very distressed' and had a 'terrified' expression on her face.
Mold Crown Court court was told the teacher had been unable to return to work since the horrific school sex attack at the 700-pupil high school in North Wales.

The schoolboy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had previous convictions for two sexual assaults and was on bail for a third when he attacked his teacher.
Steven Edwards, defending, said the boy had suffered a difficult childhood and had been the victim of abuse.
Judge Greg Bull QC told the schoolboy: 'You attacked one of your teachers, barricaded her into the computer room and forced yourself onher.
'It was a terrifying experience for a woman who was only there to try and help you.'
The teenager was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life.
