The periodic table is now just a little bit bigger.

Perhaps the most fundamental chart in all of science officially has four extra elements listed. The new elements have now been given official names and will be included in the grid.

The four new elements include nihonium, the first ever to be found by Japanese scientists.

That element – which until recently was referred to to as 113 – got its proper name from the word for Japan in Japanese – 'nihon', literally 'the land of the rising sun'.

"The element, named for the first time by Japanese and in Asia, will occupy a place in the periodic table - an intellectual asset of mankind," Kosuke Morita, who led the team that created the element, said in a statement.

Two of the other three new elements take their name from a place. The other gets its from a pioneering scientist.

The periodic table, pored over by science students the world over, arranges chemical elements in the order of their atomic number.

Some elements, such as hydrogen, carbon or magnesium, are found in nature while others, including nihonium - official symbol Nh - are synthesised in laboratories.

All the discovered elements after 104 are synthetic ones produced through laboratory experiments.

Tradition dictates that newly discovered elements be named after a place, geographical region, or scientist, according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which made the announcement on the names Wednesday.

A joint team of Russian and US scientists named element 115 moscovium - symbol Mc - after the Russian capital, where much of the relevant research was conducted.

For similar reasons, they also named element 117 tennessine - symbol Ts - after the US state of Tennessee.

The third one they discovered, element 118, was named oganesson - symbol Og - in homage to Russian nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, in recognition of his "pioneering contributions" in elements research.

North Carolina-based IUPAC said that the names were officially accepted after a 5-month public review period.

"The names of the new elements reflect the realities of our present time," IUPAC president Natalia Tarasova said on its website, citing the "universality of science" as well as "the pivotal role" of Oganessian.

With the latest discoveries, the periodic table is now complete down to the seventh row.

Underscoring the importance of the discoveries, the scientists behind the four new elements had been seen as strong candidates for this year's Nobel Chemistry Prize.

Japan has a proud research tradition and its citizens have won about 20 Nobel prizes in science and medicine, including Yoshinori Ohsumi who won the Nobel Medicine Prize this year.

In the battle of the sexes, a new study suggests that girls have a natural advantage over boys. Researchers have found that the answer to why women carrying baby girls statistically have easier pregnancies than those carrying baby boys lies in the placenta.
In the study published in Molecular Human Reproduction, it was found that genes produced by the placenta are different in males and females. "We found that with female babies, there is much higher expression of genes involved in placental development, the maintenance of pregnancy, and maternal immune tolerance," said study co-author Sam Buckberry, a graduate student at Adelaide, as reported by HealthDay. It is known that pregnancies are more likely to have bad outcomes if the baby is a boy. This is partly due to the fact that boys grow faster from the moment of conception, and this puts them at a higher risk to lacking nutrition. This is modelled by the observation that the number of boy births fell in contrast to the number of girls during the famine in Holland during WWII.
"We've known for some time that girls are clearly winning in the battle for survival,” said Claire Roberts, lead author of the study, according to HealthDay. This study’s results can explain why female babies are less likely to have a preterm birth, still birth, neonatal death, or macrosomia — a baby that weighs more than 8 lbs., 13 ounces at birth. This production of different genes in the placenta can also explain other gender differences that exist throughout life. "Male babies generally grow faster and bigger than females. This occurs in both the animal and human worlds, but until now we haven't really understood how or why," Roberts added.
Our genes help to determine whether our bodies will develop as female or male. Most humans are born with 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. Men have one X chromosome and one Y, while women have two copies of the X chromosome. The biological difference between men and women is a result of sex
determination and differentiation. Determination, which happens at conception, controls whether an embryo will develop into a male or female. Differentiation is the actual development of the given sex.
Results from this study could possibly help scientists develop gender-specific treatment options for pregnant women, the researchers said.

Everyone seems to be looking for romantic love, but few of us realize that far from being timeless and universal, romantic love is actually a modern construct, one that emerged in tandem with the novel.
But there are many other ways to love, not all of which are compatible with romantic love. By preoccupying ourselves with romantic love, we risk neglecting other types of love that are more readily accessible and may, especially in the long term, prove more healing and fulfilling.
The seven types of love listed below are loosely based on classical readings, especially those of Plato and Aristotle, and on J. A. Lee's 1973 book Colours of Love . Can you think of any other types?

1. Eros

Eros is sexual or passionate love, and is the type most akin to our modern construct of romantic love. In Greek myth, it is a form of madness brought about by one of Cupid’s arrows. The arrow breaches us and we "fall" in love, as did Paris with Helen, leading to the Trojan War and downfall of Troy. In modern times, eros has been amalgamated with the broader life force, something akin to Schopenhauer’s will, a fundamentally blind process of striving for survival and reproduction. Eros has also been contrasted with Logos, or Reason, with Cupid depicted as a blindfolded child.

2. Philia

The hallmark of philia, or friendship, is shared goodwill. Aristotle believed a person can bear goodwill to another for one of three reasons—that he is useful; that he is pleasant; and, above all, that he is good, that is, rational and virtuous. Friendships founded on goodness are associated not only with mutual benefit but also with companionship, dependability, and trust. For Plato, the best kind of friendship is that which lovers have for each other. It is a philia born out of eros, and that in turn feeds back into eros to strengthen and develop it, transforming it from a lust for possession into a shared desire for a higher level of understanding of the self, the other, and the world. In sum, philia transforms eros from a lust for possession into an impulse for
philosophy.

3. Storge

Storge (‘store-gae’), or familial love, is a kind of philia pertaining to the love between parents and their children. It differs from most philia in that it tends, especially with younger children, to be unilateral or asymmetrical. More broadly, storge is the fondness born out of familiarity or dependency and, unlike eros or philia, does not hang on our personal qualities. People in the early stages of a romantic relationship often expect unconditional storge, but find only eros, and, if they are lucky, philia. Over time, eros often mutates into storge and, if we are lucky, there is philia and pragma (see below) as well.

4. Agape

Agape is universal love, such as the love for strangers, nature, or God. Unlike storge, it does not depend on filiation or familiarity. Also called charity by Christian thinkers, agape can be said to encompass the modern concept of altruism, defined as unselfish concern for the welfare of others. Recent studies link altruism with a number of benefits. In the short term, altruism leaves us with a euphoric feeling—the so-called "helper's high." In the long term, it is associated with better mental and physical health, as well as longevity. At a social level, altruism serves as a signal of cooperative intentions, and also of resource availability and so of mating or partnering potential. It also opens up a debt account, encouraging beneficiaries to reciprocate with gifts and favors that may be of much greater value to us than those with which we feel able to part. More generally, altruism, or agape, helps to build and maintain the psychological and social fabric that shields, sustains, and enriches us. Given the increasing anger and division in our society, we could all do with more agape.

5. Ludus

Ludus is playful or uncommitted love. It can involve activities such as teasing and dancing, or more overt flirting, seducing, and conjugating. The focus is on fun, and sometimes on conquest, with no strings attached. Ludus relationships are casual, undemanding, and uncomplicated but, for all that, can be very long-lasting. Ludus works best when both parties are self-sufficient. Problems arise when one party mistakes ludus for eros, whereas ludus is in fact much more compatible with philia.

6. Pragma

Pragma is a kind of practical love founded on reason or duty and one’s longer-term interests. Sexual attraction takes a back seat in favor of personal qualities and compatibilities, shared
goals, and making it work. In the days of arranged marriages, pragma must have been very common. Although unfashionable, it remains widespread, most visibly in certain high-profile celebrity and political pairings. Many relationships that start off as eros or ludus end up as various combinations of storge and pragma. Pragma may seem opposed to ludus, but the two can co-exist, with the one providing a counterpoint to the other. In the best of cases, the partners in the pragma relationship agree to turn a blind eye or even, as in the case of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, a sympathetic eye.

7. Philautia

Philautia is self-love, which can be healthy or unhealthy. Unhealthy self-love is akin to hubris. In ancient Greece, a person could be accused of hubris if he placed himself above the gods, or the greater good. Many believed that hubris led to destruction, or nemesis . Today, hubris has come to mean an inflated sense of one’s status, abilities, or accomplishments, especially when accompanied by haughtiness or arrogance. As it disregards truth, hubris promotes injustice, conflict, and enmity.
Healthy self-love is akin to self-esteem, which is our cognitive and, above all, emotional appraisal of our own worth. More than that, it is the matrix through which we think, feel, and act, and reflects and determines our relation to ourselves, to others, and to the world.
Self-esteem and self- confidence do not always go hand in hand. In particular, it is possible to be highly self-confident and yet to have profoundly low self-esteem, as is the case with many performers and celebrities.
People with high self-esteem do not need to prop themselves up with externals such as income, status, or notoriety, or lean on crutches such as alcohol, drugs, or sex. They are able to invest themselves completely in projects and people because they do not fear failure or rejection. The painkiller ibuprofen and the cancer drug toremifene can disable the Ebola virus, say researchers.

Scientists used the UK's national synchrotron facility - Diamond Light Source - to analyse the virus in incredible detail.
They revealed the two drugs could bind to the crucial part of Ebola that the virus needs to infect cells.
However, the team warns this is just a starting point and more effective drugs need to be researched.
The synchrotron accelerates electrons until they produce very intense light.
This can be used to analyse the atomic make-up of objects at a much greater resolution than traditional microscopes.
The focus of the researchers was a protein on the surface of the Ebola virus that allows it to infect a cell.
"This is the main target on the viral surface, this is the one responsible for attaching to the cell, it's the key protein to understand," said researcher Prof Dave Stuart, from the University of Oxford.
The structure, which has been reported in the journal Nature, can already be used to design new drugs.
There are no drugs to change the course of an Ebola infection. And the need for new medicines was highlighted in the Ebola outbreak in west Africa in which 28,616 people were infected and 11,310 died.
New options
The researchers also used the Diamond facility to investigate how some current drugs interacted with the protein.
Toremifene, and to a lesser extent ibuprofen, triggered the protein into prematurely thinking it had attached to a cell.
Prof Stuart told the BBC News website: "They destabilise the protein. It [the protein] has one shot at it, and if it doesn't hit the target then those viruses would be inactivated."
Both drugs have a relatively weak effect so are unlikely to be useful treatments themselves, as huge, toxic, doses would probably be needed to affect the course of an infection.
"It's unlikely these compounds, as they are now, would be useful drugs for Ebola," Prof Stuart said.
"For an effective drug, you would want to increase the binding strength significantly.
"But seeing how they bind could allow stronger binding compounds to be developed using standard techniques."

world, according to a new ranking from the Times
Higher Education supplement released Thursday.
Of the top 24, 16 were American and six were British.
Canada and Switzerland also had one entry each.

The rankings are based on the teaching, research, and
citations of every university, with each category
weighted at 30% of the overall mark.

Industry income and international outlook were also
taken into account but were given a much smaller
weighting in the eventual score.
