The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results for the June/July 2018 Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination.

This was contained in a statement signed by the acting Registrar of the Council, Abubakar Gana.

According to Gana, only 742,455 of the candidates got at least five credit passes including Mathematics and the English Language out of the 1,041,536 candidates who sat for the examinations.

Gana also disclosed that a total number of 20,181 candidates were involved in examination malpractices in this year's examination which is quite less than what was obtainable in 2017.

Finally the long awaited date was here, with anxiety I headed to check my NECO result at an exam centre noted for registering students for exams and checking exam results too.

Anyway my name is Jude, I just rounded up my secondary education at the time and just like every other student, I couldn’t wait to check my result,

even Dad, mum and other members of my family were waiting to hear the news.

After waiting for so long, just almost when it was my turn to check my results, the scratch card for checking results finished.

The frustration was unbearable as students got annoyed yet hopeful.

So for two days I couldn’t check my result. I sort for alternatives to no avail. The more I thought of it, the more frustrated I became.

Even my family members started giving to the thought that I intentionally didn’t want to check my result for fear I might fail.

If only they knew what I was passing through.

So one evening, my uncle called my dad to tell him the good news from his side, that his daughter, my cousin just squashed her NECO result with distinctions and enquired of my results too.

My dad told him the stress I had passed through trying to check my result and my uncle resorted to speaking with me on phone.

Announcing the release of the results at the National office of the couincil in Lagos, the head of Nigeria Office, Mr Olu Adenipekun disclosed that. 786,016 candidates representing 49.98% obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.


It was gathered that a total of 1,578,846 candidates registered for the examination from 17,886 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria. Out of the registered candidates, 1,572,396 candidates sat the examination.

Out of the number that sat for the exam in Nigeria, 1,470,338 candidates, representing 93.51% have their results fully processed and released. The Certificates of such candidates will be ready in 90 days from today.

102,058 candidates representing 6.49% have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

A further break down of the results shows that 1,213,244 candidates representing 76.84% obtained credits and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.)

“858,424 candidates representing 54.59% obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language but without Mathematics.

“786,016 candidates representing 49.98% obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

“In this category were 389,655 male and 396,361 female, representing 47.32% and 52.92% respectively. ”

Richard Akindele, a professor of Management Accounting at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, recently dismissed after being found guilty of sexual harassment of a postgraduate student of the institution, Monica Osagie, has finally opened up on the events that culminated in his dismissal by the institution.

In his reply to a query issued to him by the university, Akindele explained that the five rounds of sex demanded from Monica, as revealed by the leaked audio conversation between them, was a deliberate attempt to discourage the student and at the same time invite her to his office to obtain evidence, New Telegraph reports.

The dismissed professor said the demand for five days of sex was a deliberate attempt to play along with the student.


However, the university did not buy his argument and dismissed the professor.

IniAbasi, an indigene of Udung Uko, Akwa Ibom state – is among the 50% of Nigerian candidates with credits in Mathematics and English Language.

The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Adamu Abubakar Abdulrasheed has disclosed that Nigerian Universities have not been ranked for several years.

Speaking in Abuja after the 2018 budget defense, he said the NUC had just constituted a high powered Committee headed by the erstwhile Executive Secretary, Professor Peter Okebukola to advise the Commission on the ranking of Nigeria Universities.

He stressed that for lack of ratings of Universities in Nigeria for quite sometime, some group of people would use social media to publish fake ‘ranking of Nigerian Universities.’

“The NUC has constituted a high powered Committee to reposition Nigerian Universities.

“They include prominent academicians to help produce good, quality post graduate studies.

“The Committee which is chaired by former Executive Secretary, Professor Peter Okebukola will help to review our curriculum for Nigeria Universities.

“NUC has not ranked any University for several years. The Committee will advise us on ranking of Universities because we have not done that for several years,” he said.
According to him, the NUC ha drafted a document that will reduce academic period for PhDs to a minimum of three years.
He also added that Universities in Nigeria were being positioned to ensure that PhD holders would be retained after graduation, saying, other African Universities had expressed their readiness to cooperate with Nigeria.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has expressed shock over what he called mass failure of the indigenes from the state, in the 2018 May/June West African School Certificate Examination.

Adeyeye blamed it on the “systemic” breakdown of education in the state under Governor Ayodele Fayose.

This was contained in a press release signed by his media aide, Bayo Ojo, on Friday.

“One is shocked with the abysmal mass failure of Ekiti students in the recently released WAEC 2018 results placing the state on number 23 out of 36 states.

“We have earlier cried to the public that the celebrated achievement of coming first in NECO examination was as a result of concerted efforts made by Oni/Fayemi administrations to reposition the education sector.

“It takes time for a seed to germinate and bear fruits.

The results of the giant strides of the two administrations and huge investment in pedagogical and infrastructural facilities was undeservedly appropriated by Fayose as his achievements.

“One wondered then how you could achieve such outstanding result without any investment whatsoever in infrastructural and human capital development. Fayose was claiming that he could reap without sowing. Now the deceit has finally been exposed,” it read.

Well, it's the University of Ibadan. The University was ranked 801 along with several others. UI is therefore the only Nigerian University on the list.
This inclusion was made by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) and the Center for World Universities Ranking (CWUR). These organizations had released a list of top 500 and 100 in 2016, but no Nigerian University was presented then.

CWUR said that Nigerian universities were not considered for the ranking earlier because of lack of quality research.

AWRU, who did not give a reason for Nigeria’s absence, made it clear that the criteria for ranking were the number of alumni and staff publishing journals in Nature and Science, number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Field medals.

South Africa and Egypt had the highest number of universities on the list from the continent.
