The spokesperson of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organization, Femi Fani-Kayode, has stated that the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, has set up a radio station in order to announce the results of the forth coming elections slated for March 28 and April 11. He made the allegation Friday at a press conference in Abuja. The APC set up “Radio Chanji” which will be broadcasting in Hausa language, “to announce false results after the up-coming elections are conducted”, Mr. Fani-Kayode said. He also said apart from result announcement, the party will also use the station to create “division, chaos and strife in Nigeria by propagating the most irresponsible form of mendacious and inciting falsehood and provocative propaganda”. “They also intend to use it to incite their supporters to kill. Once again we call on the authorities to investigate, question and arrest the people behind it before it is too late and before all hell breaks loose,” he said. Questions for Buhari Mr. Fani-Kayode also used the occasion to raise dozens of questions for the candidate of the APC, Muhammadu Buhari. The former Aviation Minister sought to know from Mr. Buhari’s true health status and the situation concerning his school certificate? “Does he have it or does he not have it,” he asked. Mr. Fani-Kayode also asked about Mr. Buhari’s role in the civil war in 1966 and the assassination of Nigeria’s first military head of state, Aguiyi Ironsi, and the murder of hundreds of military officers from southern Nigeria. He also asked about Mr. Buhari’s role in other killings in northern Nigeria. “Is it true that General Buhari personally ordered the retroactive application of military decrees which led to the death of many simply because he wanted to teach certain people from a certain part of the country a lesson during his reign as Military Head of State? |
PDP Chairman, Adamu Mu'azu RELATED NEWS Mu’azu vows to reconcile warring PDP factions January 21, 2014 PDP flags off campaigns in Lagos Wednesday January 6, 2015 Mu'azu's appointment as PDP chairman already yielding results – FCT Minister February 2, 2014 Jonathan congratulates Aregbesola over Osun election victory August 10, 2014 We’ll stop Amaechi from rigging Rivers election -- Wike November 21, 2014 The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’azu, has ruled out a landslide victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections. The PDP has formed the federal government as well as most of the state governments since the return of democracy in Nigeria 16 years ago, following its victory in the 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. President Goodluck Jonathan is the PDP candidate in the March 28 presidential poll. In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Mu’azu said he did not foresee a landslide victory for his party in the coming elections billed for March 28 and April 11. He however said he was confident the party will win the elections. According to him, “Our major concern in the Peoples Democratic Party is not to allow the country to be hijacked by desperadoes masquerading as purveyors of good governance, who promise heaven and earth to the people without any intention of fulfilling their election promises in the name of change. “While I do not see a landslide victory coming, I am convinced that our party will perform creditably in the Southwest and the North of Nigeria and elsewhere in all the elections this year because the evidence is clear that despite our travails at the beginning, we have done very well over the past fifteen years of our nascent democracy since 1999 to record victory. Those who disbelieve our resilience will be surprised for victory is ours.” Mr. Mu’azu, whose relationship with Mr. Jonathan is allegedly frosty, said the last four years had seen Nigeria take the economic centre stage by pursuing policies that have made the country to be the economic hub of Africa, proactively investing heavily in agricultural production as the alternative to oil, pursuing legislation that will make its people to control its oil and gas resources through the petroleum industry bill which is due for enactment by this National Assembly, perhaps before the end of this parliament. “I am delighted by the progress of our defence forces and their international collaborators in the war against insurgency in the Northeast of our country and the current mop up operations to sweep away the insurgents has progressed beyond our imagination,” the PDP national chairman said. “I am sure that President Jonathan when re-elected for a second term will declare a Marshall Plan to rebuild the entire geopolitical zone affected by the war. Our party has this programme on the top of our agenda in the next four years. That will be the right way to wipe away the scars of war among the people of that area.” Mr. Mu’azu, a former governor of Bauchi State, said he remained hopeful that the PDP “has not only taken the pole position in this tight two-horse race to win the 2015 presidential election, but will also go ahead to win the majority in the National Assembly and win many more states.” He added, “A vote for the PDP candidate, President Jonathan, is a vote for democracy, human rights, freedom and good governance. Nigerians know that it would be more risky voting any other way as it would mean uncharted waters, an uncertain future that is a potentially fraught enterprise.” The national chairman explained that after three weeks of town hall meetings, exchanges with traditional rulers and generally spreading the winning message of the PDP achievements and review of its activities since the 2011 presidential elections with supporters in the North East and South West of Nigeria, the party’s leadership is reassured it is inching its way to victory in the 2015 presidential elections. He stated further, “We shall continue this interactive engagement with Nigerians until 26th March when campaigns officially end before the March 28th Presidential elections, presenting our scorecard in government, our programme in the next four years to 2019, using the town hall format and meeting our revered traditional rulers. The PDP has a special plan that will see them play more roles in government in the near future via the instrument of the constitution. We believe that the traditional institution is crucially important to the peace, harmony and progress of our father land. “We are going around the country in search of undecided voters, who are the final battle ground where the election will be won or lost. The APC can continue to stir the rumour mills into believing that Mr. President and myself are in dispute, but we are very serious about winning a fourth presidential election and Insha Allah, we shall make it.” Mr. Mu’azu denied the claim by the All Progressives Congress that Mr. Jonathan was distributing hard currency to traditional rulers to vote for him. “The opposition party through one of its governors was shamefully saying that President Jonathan was giving away dollars to traditional rulers in the course of these visits. “It is a pity, coming from one of their respected governors, but we shall remain undaunted because as a rule, our party must continue the tradition of respect to our traditional fathers whose contribution to the peace of our country cannot be measured in monetary terms.” Our major concern in the Peoples Democratic Party is not to allow our country to be hijacked by desperados masquerading as purveyors of good governance, who promise heaven and earth to the people without any intention of fulfilling their election promises in the name of CHANGE. |
Another political party, the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, on Thursday sought to withdraw as a plaintiff from a suit it filed along with three other parties to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from using the electronic card readers in the forthcoming general elections. The court presided over by Justice Adeniyi Ademola had earlier on March 12, 2015 struck out the name of Action Alliance from the suit following its application to withdraw from the suit because it did not authorise its being joined as a plaintiff in the suit. The suit was then left with the United Democratic Party, Allied Congress Party of Nigeria and Alliance for Democracy, as the remaining plaintiffs. But the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, through a lawyer, Yahaya Abubakar, also on Thursday sought that its name be struck out in the suit as a plaintiff. Justice Ademola however declined to grant the prayer on the grounds that Abubakar did not comply with the requirement of the court’s rules in appearing in the suit as a new counsel. The judge in discontinuing Abubakar’s appearance for the ACPN, upheld the objection of the counsel for the plaintiffs, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN). Abubakar, had in asking for ACPN’s name to be struck out as a plaintiff, said he was briefed by the party’s authentic National Chairman, Olu Okunrinboye. He had said the status of Ganiyu Galadima, who was in court as the party’s National Chairman and presidential candidate, was currently being challenged in a separate suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/249/2015. He said the party’s actual presidential candidate is Mrs Bose Ojelaro. “We were brought to this court against our will. We do not know how we got here in the first place. This is a fundamental case of misjoinder,” Abubakar said. The counsel for the All Progressives Congress, including Akin Olujnmi (SAN) and kola Awodein (SAN), and another defence lawyer, Sam Kargbo had urged Justice Ademola to investigate the issue behind the contradictory positions of the two lawyers representing ACPN. Iziyon later urged the court to hear all the pending applications – defendants’ applications for stay of proceedings pending appeal and the preliminary objections – along with the substantive suit in view of the urgency involved in the case. Olujinmi and other defence lawyers had on the contrary sought time to file their necessary responses to applications served on them by the plaintiffs. Justice Ademola adjourned till 12 noon on Friday for hearing of pending preliminary applications. Meanwhile, Justice Gabriel Kolawole (also of the Federal High Court, Abuja) has fixed March 23 (by 12 noon) for ruling in an application by the APC to be joined in another suit, challenging the legitimacy of INEC’s decision to use card readers for the elections. |
PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, promised to build four new refineries for the country if elected on March 28. This is coming just as he expressed his reservation over the way and manner the Federal Government has been handling the case of over 200 abducted Chibok girls. Buhari, who stated this during a town hall meeting on security, in Abuja, noted that: “I have said that the APC as a party has identified three fundamental problems in this country. You cannot repeat them so often, because everybody talks about them. They are insecurity, the destruction of the economy and corruption, which has become a vicious cycle. “The state of insecurity, as we said when the election was extended by six weeks, is that if the Nigerian government and the military could me not tame Boko Haram for five years, what will they do in six weeks. “But I think that some positive moves have been made, though we are still at it. The first thing they should have done is to make sure that you have a good plan on the ground to take care of the welfare of the law enforcement agents,” he stated. On the missing Chibok girls, he said, “it is really a great embarrassment to this country. Since Independence, I don’t think we have been reduced to such a position as a nation, imagine the disappearance of 220 girls between the ages 14 and 18 for almost a year and government could not do anything about it and this same government says it wants to remain in place?” Buhari, also on Wednesday, said the ruling PDP had failed the country through what he termed misrule. He stated this during a meeting with representatives of 14 political parties, including APC, under the umbrella of Progressive Political Parties (COP3). The parties are Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), African Peoples Alliance (APA), KOWA party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), HOPE Democratic Party, Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), United Peoples Party (UPP), Accord Party, Independent Democratic (ID), Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Action Alliance (AA) and APC. According to him, “we appreciate the stage we are in our political development. We have been sentenced to underdevelopment by the PDP. “We challenge the PDP, let them account for their stay in power for 16 years of rulership, in terms of the fundamental objectives we have been talking about in the three most important aspects, security, economy and corruption. “We have been very consistent about these issues, but people who are sitting on the periphery have kept on making noise and wasting our time. Let them come and defend themselves in what they have done in the last 16 years, with the incredible resources they made within this period. “The incredible resources this country realised within this period is much more than what the country made since the amalgamation in 1914. If you go and get this record from the Central Bank. The type of money we made in the last 16 years, we have never made it before. “We used to have Nigeria Airways, Nigeria Shipping Line, Nigeria Railways etc. But what do we have now?, Nothing, look at the state of our Naira. Now you have to get 220 something Naira for a dollar. How can we develop under this system?,” he queried. |

As the controversy continues to trail the production and supply of the permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) for the elections, it has emerged that a Nigerian company, ACT.Technologies Limited, was awarded a N2.6 billion contract by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce the PVCs, which was in turn sub-contracted to a Chinese firm. Based on the electronic payments exclusively obtained from INEC by THISDAY, the transfers showed that over N2.6 billion was paid to the Nigerian company where Bola Tinubu has substantial interest, for the production and supply of over 68.8 million PVCs within a period of seven months. It was further gathered that the PVCs were expected to be produced at a unit cost of N65. THISDAY gathered that the electronic payment mandate for the production of the PVCs was routed through two banks, an Islamic Bank – JAIZ Bank – and the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited between 2013 and 2014, which showed that ACT.Technologies charged with the production of the PVCs had been fully paid, but is yet to supply all the PVCs for the elections. A breakdown of the payment mandate showed that INEC on February 14, 2013 paid the sum of N489,937,500 to ACT.Technologies, being part payment for the production of the PVCs. The money was paid through JAIZ Bank. Another transfer of N585 million was made on July 16, 2013 to the company via FCMB; on June 11, 2013, N293,962,500 was effected through JAIZ Bank; while on August 13, 2013, INEC paid N130 million. In addition, N234 million was paid to ACT.Technologies for the supply of 40 million PVCs through JAIZ Bank on January 24, 2014, while the last transfer of N590,871,418 was made on February 19, 2014. All the electronic payment mandates were signed by the Secretary of INEC, Augusta Ogakwu; Director of Finance, Hajiya Salamatu Ibrahim; and Director of Budget, T.W. Afannga. According to an INEC source, despite the full payment for the contract, a batch of PVCs were yet to be produced. Shortly after the elections were postponed, Jega had informed the Senate that some 800,000 to one million PVCs had still not arrived the country from China. |
The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, on Tuesday said although he trusts the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), he doubts the credibility of “his environment.” It was clear that Bakare was talking about Buhari’s party, the APC. The pastor addressed Christians at the annual Lenten lecture of the Island Club in Lagos. He enjoined Christians to vote wisely, saying , “I believe in contact without contamination.” Bakare, who was the running mate of Buhari on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 presidential election, said he was not a politician but a nation builder. He said whoever loses the presidential election should accept the winner and join hands to move the nation forward. He said, “If Buhari wins, let President Goodluck Jonathan accept defeat. Whoever loses is not a loser. And if President Goodluck Jonathan wins, Buhari should accept this as the will of God.” Speaking on fasting, he urged Christians in the country to examine the true spirit behind the Lenten fast, saying fasting was not an antidote to problems but an opportunity to submit to the will of God. The pastor attributed the wrong attitude of Christians to fasting to biblical illiteracy. He maintained that the true fasting ordained by God was explained in Isaiah 58, highlighting the need to help the poor and be led by God to observe it. He said, “It is essential for adherents to critically examine the spirit behind the fast with a view to ensuring that it is not an attempt to obtain righteousness before God.” |
