Mr. Edun said that the benefit of the subsidy removal will be plough back into various sectors to improve business environment for local and foreign investment. Ofunaofu: Report: Current Govt Added More Debt in Two Years Than Nigeria Accumulated in 55 Years
• Decries Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio
•Urges FG to declare fiscal emergency
A new policy brief has warned that Nigeria’s worsening debt profile and weak revenue generation have pushed the country into a dangerous fiscal position, with the current administration accumulating more debt in two years than Nigeria recorded during its first 55 years after independence.
The report, released by the Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics LTD/GTE, a Nigerian policy think tank, argued that the country’s debt crisis has evolved into a governance and revenue emergency, as debt servicing obligations now exceed the federal government’s retained earnings. > > According to the think tank, Nigeria’s public debt rose sharply from N87.38 trillion in June 2023 to N159.28 trillion by the end of 2025, with President Bola Tinubu’s administration accounting for about N65.9 trillion of the increase within its first two years in office.
The organisation in the brief titled: “Nigeria Is Borrowing to Breathe—and the Clock Is Ticking”, noted that Nigeria accumulated only about N12.06 trillion in debt from independence in 1960 up to 2015, meaning the current administration added more than five times that amount in just 24 months.
The report stated that while previous governments also contributed significantly to the country’s rising debt burden, the speed of accumulation under the current administration had intensified concerns over fiscal sustainability.
“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has added a further N65.9 trillion in just two years. To put that in perspective: it took Nigeria’s first 55 years of independence to accumulate N12 trillion in debt. The current administration has added more than five times that amount in 24 months,” it argued.
It recalled that Nigeria briefly became almost debt-free externally after the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo secured an $18 billion Paris Club debt relief package in 2005 and paid $12 billion to extinguish about $30 billion in external obligations.

chisomkachy: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.
Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.
Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.
The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.
The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.
Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.
The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.
But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.
During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.
Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.
Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:
“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.
“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”
Guestmale: The greatest deservice IBB did to Nigeria and Nigerians was truncating of Buhari/Idiagbon's regime and refusal to continue with the regime's policies and laws.
Please what are the details of these policies and laws of military dictator Buhari, the only successful coup plotter against democratic institutions at local, state and federal levels?
Economic recession: Buhari and the burden of history
It is no longer news that the Nigerian economy is in recession. As reported by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, “in the second quarter of 2016, the nation’s Gross Domestic Product declined by -2.06 percent (year-on-year) in real terms – the worst such performance in over 29 years. Inflation is heading for the roof – presently, at 17 percent. Unemployment and under-employment among the youth is now at 45 percent. The beleaguered Naira is in a free fall (now N425 to the dollar). The misery index is now at 47.7 – the fifth worst such index in the world.
As if these are not enough, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) recently released figures to show that over 272 businesses have closed shop in the country over the last year. 222 of those were SMEs while 50 were manufacturing companies. Sadly, most of the manufacturing companies that closed shop in Nigeria relocated to neighbouring countries with more friendly business policies from where they manufacture and import to Nigeria. The total job losses since Mr Buhari took over power have been officially put at 4. 58 million, according to the figures from the NBS yesterday.
This is 2016 but it all reads like 1985 when Buhari was a military Head of State. History cannot be kinder to Mr Buhari. Removed from office by his military colleagues after just 20 months for his rigidity and incapacity to respond proactively to the dire economic immobolism of the 1980s, Buhari was granted a golden opportunity in 2015 to rewrite history, prove to his accusers that he is not the rigid socialist, economic illiterate and an ethnic champion that his detractors have always portrayed him to be. Luckily, he still enjoyed an unrivalled reputation for sincerity, incorruptibility and frugality.
Sadly, since coming to power, Mr Buhari has repeated all the mistakes he made in 1984 and 1985 that crippled the economy and caused great sufferings to Nigerians that they had to queue for days just to buy essential commodities like rice, bread, sugar, milk etc.

anonimi: How Indorama sustains manufacturers, boosts Nigeria’s FX earnings
Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited (IEPL) has emerged as a major value creator in the Nigerian economy. It is responsible for the survival, growth and sustenance of many manufacturing companies in Nigeria today. A large number of plastic and allied firms depend on the Eleme-based company for petrochemical resins (or polymer resins) which serve as their raw materials.
The petrochemical company is just one of the several subsidiaries of Indorama-Nigeria Group, which also comprises Indorama Eleme Fertilizer & Chemicals Limited (IEFCL), Indorama PET Nigeria Limited, and Indorama Port Operations.
Since Indorama Corporation of Indonesia became core investor in the old Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL) in 2006 through privatisation programme of the Federal Government, the group has become a game changer in the Nigerian economy.
The petrochemical company has solved the major challenge facing a number of manufacturers— poor access to raw materials. Rather than scramble for foreign exchange to import inputs, the company ensures that manufacturers have access to their critical raw materials, enabling them to save costs and improve margins.
The major resins used by plastic and allied companies are polyethylene and polypropylene. Indorama produces about 45 grades of these products for various industries. About 600 of such companies in Nigeria depend on IEPL for their survival. They are estimated to have over 90,000 workers.

iwaeda: Wike Boasts Of Helping APC Use Judiciary To Kill Osun LG Funds Case, Warns Party Leaders Against Ingratitude
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly boasted that he assisted certain elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in deploying the judiciary to frustrate the Osun State local government allocation lawsuit.
In a video now circulating widely on social media and obtained by SaharaReporters, Wike made the claim while addressing a crowd in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The former Rivers governor accused the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, of benefitting from judicial actions against the Osun State Government without knowing those who did the work behind the scenes.
The suit in question led to the withholding of local government funds in Osun State, a development widely seen as targeting the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as opposition in the state.
Wike, who spoke angrily, suggested that the court action supporting the APC’s position against the Osun government did not happen by chance, boasting that powerful political forces worked quietly to ensure the outcome.
“Don’t take our support for Mr President for granted,” Wike warned, in an apparent message to APC leaders defending Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. “You have to be careful about the statements you make. You have to be very careful.”
He accused Basiru of political ingratitude, claiming the APC was enjoying in Osun State without understanding who engineered their advantage.
“Today, you are enjoying in Osun. You don’t know those who did the work,” Wike said. “You are opening your mouth to talk about Rivers State.”

Also reacting to the judgment, its apparent beneficiary, Senator Sheriff, vowed to put in place a machinery that would not give room to people like Governors Nyesom Wike and Ayodele Fayose of Rivers and Ekiti states, respectively in any future arrangement in the party.
“I will engineer a restructuring of PDP such that characters like Wike and Fayose cannot find a way through to attain any position of prominence in our party in the future. They have brought shame and agony through the application of their crude and godless politics which is at variance with the principles upon which our founding fathers built our great party.
“We must find a way to sieve things so that only men of character and integrity can come through for positions of responsibility at all levels of our political engagement in the country.
“We must urgently steer the ship of PDP clear of the path of infamy which Wike and Fayose has brought our party, making Nigerians to mistaken PDP as a training ground for thugs. That is the urgent task we have. We cannot continue to advertise thug brand and expect Nigerians to take us seriously,” he said.

March 8, 2013 Nigeria operating voodoo economy – Tinubu
FORMER Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, dissected Nigeria’s economy and declared that the country was operating a voodoo economic policy that is pauperising the citizenry and urged urgent economic surgery to save the polity.
For instance, Tinubu wondered why the Federal Government is maintaining a foreign reserve of $46 billion with one or two per cent interest and shouldering a load of $42 billion domestic debt, which it services with 16 per cent interest.
“This is voodoo economy,” he said, adding, “they are operating it because they don’t know what to do. It is choking the private sector.
“We must in this country do away with the idea of ‘it is better save the money and spend the people.’ Rather I will say we should adopt the policy of ‘it is better to save the people and spend the fund.’

(Inflation in 2023 reached 28.92% by December, while food inflation was even higher at 33.93%)
Based on the goods shown in these screenshots, their prices increased by 430% on average between 2023 and 2026
Now compare that with the minimum wage....In 2023, minimum wage was 30k, today, it is 70k, an increase of 133%, So, literally, wages have not kept up with the increase in prices
The minimum wage more than doubled, but these goods became more than 5 times more expensive on average, that's why a higher wage doesn't necessarily mean people are better off
Salaries need to keep up with the cost of living so that people purchasing power doesn't continue to decline
The truth is even if they increase minimum wage, price of goods and services will still increase, govt need to bring price control in food, transportation, housing and electricity
What is the logic of controlling the price of what you don’t produce?
Should you not address production issues and prices will reduce from greater supply to the market

CharlesCNG: ADC ADOPTED ITS MANIFESTO IN APRIL. SO WHERE DID ATIKU'S “RESTORE FUEL SUBSIDY” POLICY COME FROM? By CharlesCNG
Something very interesting happened today.
Atiku Abubakar announced that if elected President in 2027:“I will restore the subsidy.”
But there is one problem. Is that actually ADC policy?
Let us rewind.
Earlier this year, ADC constituted a Policy and Manifesto Committee chaired by former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun, with Professor Pat Utomi as deputy chairman.
They were specifically asked to develop the policies with which ADC intended to govern Nigeria.
They did their work. They submitted their report.
And on April 14, 2026, ADC's National Convention adopted the party's revised Policy and Manifesto.
So what was ADC's position on fuel subsidy?
Before the manifesto was adopted, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi explained the emerging thinking very clearly:
“Giving fuel subsidy to everybody is wrong. Removing subsidy from everybody is equally wrong.”
Then came the proposed solution:
“ADC will provide subsidy to those who need subsidy.”
That is TARGETED SUBSIDY. As senseless and ineffective and unpractical is, It is fundamentally different from simply announcing:
“I WILL RESTORE FUEL SUBSIDY.”
So what happened between April and August?
Did ADC amend its manifesto? Did the Oyegun-Utomi committee reconvene? Did the party abandon targeted subsidy?
Did the National Working Committee approve universal subsidy restoration?
Or did Atiku simply announce a new multi-trillion-naira economic policy on the campaign trail?
These questions matter.
Because ADC spent months telling Nigerians that it was different.
It formed committees. It recruited economists and policy experts. It produced a manifesto.
It took that manifesto to a National Convention. The convention adopted it.
You cannot go through all that trouble and then have your presidential candidate casually introduce a fundamentally broader subsidy commitment four months later without explaining how it fits the manifesto. So before we even calculate what Atiku's restored subsidy will cost, Nigerians deserve one very simple answer:
WHERE IS “RESTORE FUEL SUBSIDY” IN THE ADC MANIFESTO ADOPTED IN APRIL?
If it is there, show us.
If ADC has subsequently changed its policy, tell Nigerians when it changed and why.
But if neither has happened, then we have an even bigger problem.
ATIKU MAY BE MAKING ECONOMIC POLICY UP AS HE GOES ALONG.
And that is precisely what a manifesto is supposed to prevent.
ADC manifesto is simply about bringing back 16 years of PDP prosperity, peace and security with cheap petrol, cheap dollars and less debt burden, inspired by genuine deregulation and privatisation unlike the balablu bulaba abracadabra magic of Tinubu and APC.
How long did it take to crash telecom prices after GSM licences were auctioned out in 2001? Why has Tinubu failed to crash petrol prices as he promised almost four years ago? Do you know? Any idea why?
Ttalk: In other words returning subsidy simply mean Dangote refinery will pack up and Nigeria will lose saved fx used in importation.
Reason why many are poor is not because they are not hardworking but it's because they have refused to use their common sense.
No. The private refinery licensed as part of 2012 PDP deregulation agenda won’t pack up.
What will pack up is the balablu bulaba a-looter propaganda of Tinubu, which has increased debt burden astronomically despite removing subsidies three years ago.
Where is the common sense in having more debt in spite of subsidy removal
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun made this known at the end of the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. Mr. Edun said that the benefit of the subsidy removal will be plough back into various sectors to improve business environment for local and foreign investment. Cyberterror: This shows that Atiku is a dubious man. He promised to remove subsidy in 2023 because it was corrupt and unsustainable . So what has changed between then and now to make him do a complete U-turn? Dangote has built his refinery, others are coming up too, due to deregulation, that means more jobs, petrol availability is now a sure thing, prices will eventually stabilize in the middle to long term. But Atiku is a desperate coward looking to get votes by any means.
How long did it take for telecom prices to crash (not stabilise o), after Atiku/ Obasanjo administration deregulated the industry?
badoh: Atiku only said he will consider returning subsidy. This is not a definitive statement nor assurance but a political statement to make people to vote for him. With the current exchange rate, how is this feasible? Will he also return the economy to multiple exchange rate regime? how will he curb smuggling of PMS to neighbouring countries if he reverse subsidy and are we not going to start witnessing artificial scarcity of PMS again?
Was it a worse or better political statement when Tinubu said he would crash petrol prices below N185
The same Obasanjo who made the highest suspect in his AGF's murder a senator from Agodi prison? Abi another Baba Iyabo wa ni
chino11: You were the governor of Oyo State at the time Chief Ajibola Ige was murdered. What was your experience then?
It was a bitter experience. That very day was a Sunday. It was the day we had our Christmas carol at the Government House. It was a norman Sunday; everything was going on fine. The carol came and went from 4:15 to 6:00pm that day. And then everybody dispersed. As if I got a signal of what was coming, my speech that day was centred on security in Oyo State. I called on the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police to strengthen security in Oyo State because an old school mate, Engineer Adegeebo, had been assassinated near his house in Bodija a week earlier.
Every cleric went home and I retired to Government House. I played for some time. Then I went to my room to treat some files. I was doing that when suddenly the phone rang. It was land line we were using then. The operator said that somebody wanted to speak with me. Then I picked the call and it was a brother to my deputy. He said he was asked to tell me that Chief Bola Ige had been shot by some unknown assassins. I was confused immediately. I didn’t know what to do. But later I regained my strength and quickly went down without telling my wife what was happening. It was 9:55 pm. I sent for my PS because all the ADC and other security staff had gone to their places of abode. I told him to drive me in one of the private cars. Inside the car, I told him that Uncle Bola Ige had been shot by some gunmen, that I was going to check him at Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro. The man who informed said Ige was taken to Oluyoro.
The place I have been treading for over 60 years, I remember that I lost my way. I was just going round and round until I gained my consciousness again. Immediately the gateman saw me, he quickly opened the gate. There, we saw Uncle Dele Ige, who was already rolling on the ground. I went straight to the room where Bola Ige was lying. I saw marks of bullets on his body. He slept with his face up. He was somehow breathing but the breathing was abnormal. I saw where the bullet penetrated on the left side. I saw it myself. Uncle Bola Ige was wearing shirt and trousers. And I saw Muyiwa standing by the side of the bed. He was wailing. He appealed to me, saying: ”Uncle, please tell the doctor to wake up my Daddy. Tell him. The doctor can do it.” Then, I approached the doctor and asked him the situation. The doctor called me to one side and told me that he was dead. He said: “Sir, Your Excellency, Uncle is gone. There is nothing we can do. They shot him straight in the heart. He asked me not to tell Muyiwa.
I almost betrayed my emotion when I got back into the room where Uncle was lying with Muyiwa beside his bed. I just quickly gathered myself and told Muyiwa that I was going to see the head of the hospital. That was how I bolted away. I came back to the Government House to inform Mr. President, who was Obasanjo at that time.
By the time I was going upstairs to my room, to try and tell Operator to phone Mr. President for me, the phone was already ringing. When I got into my room, it was still ringing. I quickly picked it up and it was Obasanjo. He the Operator said the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wants to talk to you. Then I asked him to put him on. The question Obasanjo just asked was: “Is he certified dead?” I said: “Yes sir.” Then he dropped the phone. That was all. That was my experience. I can never forget that experience.
