Politics / The PDP Rallies For APGA by anonymousIP2: 5:53pm On Nov 05, 2017
Without Chief Victor Umeh, Governor Peter Obi would not have had a second term of office. This declaration is an easy start to explaining the title of this article. It happened this way. Well before his first tenure ended, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, fed up to the hairline, ruled Mr. Obi out of a second term. One morning, General Ojukwu arrived APGA offices in Awka, to the cheers of party faithful and expectant journalists. There, he lifted the hand of Mr. Emeka Etiaba, now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and pronounced him the man to fly APGA’s flag in the 2010 governorship election.

Government House, Awka, immediately went into turmoil, with Governor Obi looking like someone poleaxed. Long hours later, he ditched lamentation for counteraction. This came in his flying to Victor Umeh’s patronage. They met later that week at the grounds between Government Lodge, Enugu and the Enugu State House of Assembly, Governor Obi having chased security aides, drivers and other convoy regulars to no less than 50 metres away. Left severely alone, Governor fell to his knees, contrite, subdued and solicitous, pleading with Umeh for a second chance. After some contemplation, Umeh, reluctantly decided to give Obi a kind ear.

Former Anambra State PDP chairman, Dan Ulasi, recently stated on two national TV stations – AIT and Channels – what happened next. Arriving Chief Ojukwu’s Enugu home one evening, Chief Ulasi was startled to find Peter Obi and Victor Umeh lying flat on the carpet, pleading profusely. Umeh was suppliant; Obi was plaintive. Feeling that, with Umeh’s support, Peter Obi had repented, Ojukwu relented. Obi giggled back to Awka, the second term ticket firmly in his kitty. When the campaigns started a few months later, Ojukwu touched Anambra’s emotional nerve by giving his people a “last wish”, which was to vote Peter Obi again.

When Peter Obi spoke at PDP’s campaign flag off on October 14, he had denied Governor Obiano the benefit of the doubt that Ojukwu and Umeh had generously accorded him. On and on he went, pillorying the Governor of Anambra State. Dates must come into play here. Ojukwu died in November 2011. Less than three years later, Peter Obi abandoned APGA he had vowed before the Ikemba to sustain. This happened only six months after his governorship ran out. Peter Obi plunged into the PDP, arguing that it was wiser “to be a competitor and not a spectator in national affairs”!Four months later, in February 2015, Governor Obiano gave the boot to Joe-Matins Uzodike, his Political Adviser. After another four months, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, who had continued as SSG under Obiano was instructed to tender his resignation letter. This shows that even before Obiano had done half of his first term of office, the Peter Obi-inspired coalition against him was well in place. Clearly, Peter Obi’s animus against Obiano was unconnected to the latter’s governorship credentials. Thus before Governor Obiano had done two years in office, the war of attrition against him had been joined.

By the time I joined the Obiano administration in July last year, Mr. Uzodike had made 77 anti-Obiano appearances on various Anambra State FM radio stations. Peter Obi’s men constructed, especially on airwaves and the Internet, a skyscraper of lies against Obiano, denigrating the man, disparaging him, minimizing his achievements, and cursing the flaming daylight out of his good deeds. Remarkably, there is no record of Governor Obiano, a perfect gentleman, ever repaying his traducers with swear words.

If Peter Obi’s concern was quality leadership, why didn’t he remonstrate with Governor Obiano for any perceived shortfalls? Hadn’t Victor Umeh led him by the hand to obtain reprieve from General Ojukwu? Why did he shun Obiano who publicly offered apologies to him for any perceived infractions right in front of the casket of Revered Father Tagbo, their principal at Christ, the King College, Onitsha? Why did he decide rather to upset the applecart? APGA is bigger than any of its members. Why is Peter Obi on a course of destroying the party that gave him eight years of governorship?

Let’s bring in Alex Ekwueme. In 1999, political generals stopped Chief Ekwueme and handed national leadership to an Olusegun Obasanjo they had spirited from the jailhouse. Yet, Dr. Ekwueme remained in the PDP. Had he decided to pull from the party because he was given a short shrift, Peter Obi would today probably not find a PDP platform from which to try and destroy APGA, the only national party rooted in the Igbo country.

When, in the 2015-2016 English Premier League Season, Chelsea performed abysmally, club owner Roman Abramovich didn’t throw away the baby with the bathwater. He had the club reworked into winning ways and the League title last season. Assuming Governor Obiano has performed below expectation, Mr. Obi’s only right course of action would have been to locate ways of righting wrongs, not demolish a house he had helped in constructing.

In 2006, when I was Chief of Staff at Government House, one rich man gathered his disgruntled cohorts and unjustly impeached Governor Obi. All our efforts to prevent the injustice were met with the prime mover’s boast that he had the means to carry through the impeachment. It is the same boast that we hear today: Peter Obi has the means to unseat Obiano! That’s unjust.

To invite Dr. Ekwueme again. Speaking at the PDP campaign flag-off, he said the party lost previous elections due to indiscipline. Mrs. Uche Ekwunife left the party and joined another. Andy Ubah left the party and joined another. Nicholas Ukachukwu left the party and joined another. Well, isn’t the same indiscipline currently repeating itself? Whoever saw Princess Stella Odua, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, Chief John Emeka and many others at the PDP campaign flag off? Isn’t that a forewarning that previous electoral defeats are on course for reenactment? Doesn’t it show that the PDP is rallying for APGA’s continued supremacy?

Dr. Ekwueme for the final time, for he is a man without cant. At PDP’s campaign flag-off, he had no ill word for APGA or Obiano. His contribution was clearly a rally in APGA’s favour. Months earlier, he had given this unequivocal endorsement: “In retirement I consider myself an elder statesman. But at a personal level, I am close to Governor Obiano and I think he is doing well and should be given a chance to complete his second term. Even purely from a selfish point of view and as somebody from the Southern senatorial district of Anambra State, it is in our interest that he should have a second term of four years because once he finishes that, there will be no question of anybody coming to contest with us.”

It leaves us all with the recurring pertinent question: If it isn’t broken, why mend it when wisdom dictates that a good first term deserves a second?

Politics / Anambra Poll: ‘cicero Obi’ Manipulates Again by anonymousIP2: 5:43pm On Nov 05, 2017
AS THE gubernatorial election comes up in Anambra State in a matter of weeks all manner of thoughts, antics and manipulative hogwash are being thrown at the people to brainwash them. The mission is to extort votes and make some ilk have their way with their very scarce resource. Desperate politicians are eagerly combing newsrooms of media houses in frantic push to distort facts, manoeuvre the process and deceive the uninformed. Some are even openly sowing seeds of discord with the hope that if things upturn into inclement political weather they will benefit and get power. But God will never allow the peace and sanity Anambra has achieved in the past three and half years slip into the dungeon of crime and social tension it was until four years ago. Anambra will have peace and her election will hold peacefully on November 18. But it is important to appreciate the wisdom of the Irish saying: “God is good but never dance in a small boat.” This is why it is very important to spot developments that tend to challenge the divine favours Anambra has been receiving so far.

Sure there is no doubt that Peter Obi read a lot of Cicero’s manual on mind manipulation and skewing communications to win elections. But must he use Anambra, a land that gave him every support and tolerance as test ground for the odious?

Obi knows Cicero. Long before the ThisDay newspaper interview, entitled, ‘Obi: Why I dumped Obiano for Obaze’, published on Thursday, October 26, 2017 his acts and general political trajectory had shown a good internalisation of the spin and skew art of the fabled ancient spin doctor, Cicero. In the interview which according to the This Day writer, Tobi Soniyi, he granted to him among others in a rally of “Politics Editors” of media houses, the former governor of Anambra State said: “I read Ciecero’s Manual of electioneering written by his relation (sic) called Quintus. Cicero advised him to tell lies about his opponent and to even invent scandals – this is what I see in Anambra State.”

Without doubt, the former governor is abreast with Cicero’s philosophy of sowing seeds of social disharmony to read political advantage as well as the odious power-at-all-cost philosophies of other extremist philosopher and writers such as Nicollo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobes, Saul Allinsky, George Orwell, Blaise Paschal, Joseph Goebbels among others of such ilk whose faculty is using the media to manipulate the mind of the society for their own ends. Hence no surprise when he disclosed thusly: “I read (sic) philosophy andI know about Blaise Paschal who in his book called ‘Penses’ described man as a chimera, an animal in Greek mythology that had two heads, he is an angel in one and a brute in the other. Such contradiction is what we see in human beings.”

The article, ‘Obi: Why I dumped Obiano for Obaze’, therefore progressed like a dispense of terse lessons from Paschal’s ‘Penses’ from first sentence to conclusion. He went ahead to dwell on many issues that remind of the philosopher Max Lerner’s injunction in his 1949 work, ‘Actions and Passions’.

“Do not confuse your vested interests with ethics,” Lerner warned self-obsessed opinion leaders, and further urged: “Do not identify the enemies of your privilege as the enemies of humanity.”

All through the interview, Sir Obi toiled to present his successor, Willie Obiano as the real enemy of Anambra people. He tooled for references and instances to nail Gov. Obiano as ‘public enemy number one’. He referred to attitude to tag him an ingrate. He talked about money to present himself as a frugal money manager and his successor as something else.

His words: “All my life, I have managed money. I started business early in life, right from my primary school. By the time I got to university, I was already travelling outside (sic) the country for business. Even as a student other students gave me money to hold for them, because they knew that with me, their money was secured.

“Whether in business or government, my attitude to money remains one – prudence.”

That way he presented himself as naturally, trustworthy and characteristically decorous in spending, if not a hermit in a clime where all others are extravagant, lavish and lacking trust. What a thinly veiled smear of ‘the other man’ for a deity desirous demagogue who wants the world to call him a saint and dub others demon! But the folly there is that the world knows a lot more rot, taint and hunch back of the character than the overt quest for canonisation among the saints could ever erase.

While the space here may not be ample for counting the many cardinal sins of our newest ‘saint’ in town which one would be baffled if his minders thought that the world had easily forgotten, dwelling on his hypocritical engagement of the press is just enough here.

Let’s plumb the very shoddy flush through serious issues in his narrative. Asked to explain the controversy behind the money he said he left in Anambra State’s coffers for his successor, he ended up making things more convoluted than before. After escorting his interviewers through his ‘world of sainthood’ and inseparable affinity with cash he said: “Now to your question of how much I left. On the 17th of March, 2014, that I left office, I left a total of N25 billion cash and another N26,600,000,000, normally called set aside funds to execute some projects already identified, or to finish critical projects already on. It was part of the two-year salary for the last set of civil servants we recruited – we did so in order not to encumber the new governor. Ironically, because these funds were tied to specific projects like the Amawbia to Amansea, NYSC office at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, the hotels, malls. We also had critical projects like the Three Arms Zone, which included Governors Lodge. We did not include them in our hand over note.

“So if you are talking about total naira I left, it is actually money N48,600,000,000. I will give you a breakdown of all the banks.

“In US dollar component, I left $156 million. We had it $56 million in Fidelity Bank, $50 million in Access Bank and $50 million in Diamond Bank. Today, going by current dollar rate, the accruals and others, the money is about N200 billion. These are not money that were left in foreign banks.”

Multiple questions arise from this presentation, and the reader should thank God that the article was served in a direct question-and-answer interview format which purports that Obi’s comments were served as spoken. The questions bother on coherence, ethical operation, unclear attributions and whether the use of indistinct grammar in almost all the sentences in the narrative is deliberate or ‘repeated happenstance.’

Even if you read the comment over and again, you would still ask: How much did Obi say that he handed over to Obiano? Is it N25 billion; N48,600,000,000 or N200 billion?

He said he had a N26,600,000,000 sum set aside “to execute some projects already identified, or to finish critical projects already on”. But the same sum was also set aside as a portion of the two-year salary for the last set of civil servants he recruited because he did want to “encumber the new governor”. So where is the other part of the salary of the said workers expected to come from? What is supposed to happen to their wages after the expiry of the given two years? What is very special about that set of workers that the succeeding governor is to be spared from being “encumbered” by them? Why would those workers’ salary alone come from a fund source that is different from where the wages of other staff of the state?

The reader would notice that the said N26,600,000,000 is the same funding source of a plethora of special projects comprising, as he stated, Amawbia to Amansea, NYSC office at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, the hotels, malls, the Three Arms Zone, which included Governors Lodge among others. All bills from the N26.6 billion? And the way he explained, it appears the money was to pay up for all the special projects. Bye the way, “Amawbia to Amansea” what? Which Governor’s Lodge, and which hotels and malls?

And ethically, most importantly so for a ‘saint,’ who lays to a banking board helmsmanship and a self-proclaimed champion of good governance, why should he leave scores of billions of tax payers’ money behind without stating it? In the interview, the former governor stated thusly about the monies: “We did not include them in our hand over note.” It is either that he forgot the import of the statement which is that he owes Anambra people a lot of explanation or that there was really no money but a communication postured to whip up sentiments in society for his political goals.

The same fuzzy language was used to dwell on the said dollars in banks, he would have explained what kind of titles they are if he waltzes on sincerity as he claimed in the interview, are they tenured lodgement bonds or what?

Then the new figure in the mire of trumped up financial numbers – N200 billion. Anyone who has been following the dusts, red herrings and alarms Obi’s boys have been raising over the past three years on Obiano’s reign would have read about a certain N75 billion Obi was said to have left behind for his successor. Recently, his media aide, Valentine Obienyem claimed it is N100 billion. Now Obi says, N200 billion. Pray what is the figure or does Obi not know how much he left behind again?

This sounds like pulling cheap wool on the eyes of the Anambra people because somebody thinks they are gullible to his manipulation. When noble intensions are scares, obtuse slurs ferry logic.

He also engaged in such escapism when quizzed about the N127 billion debt he left for his predecessor. His reply: “the day I left office I did not have any unpaid certificate of work that has been executed.” He went on to claim that there was no certificate of supply that was not paid for and said that he expected his successor, being an accountant to know “that contracts are not debt until executed” (his words). So what is a contract? How do you mobilise a contractor? If as his reply implied he engaged contractors without paying them until they had delivered does that not explain that he engaged in the contracts and lumped the bills on his successor to pay. So, has he not buttressed the fact that he left the huge debt burden on his successor?

Read again how he explained the said N26,600,000,000 he left for his preferred workers’ salaries et al and probe the said dollar accounts in the banks. You will note how the former governor tied down every money he claimed to have left to his own purposes.

The truth is that anyone who is averagely discerning, even if not financially savvy, will easily unveil the self-serving motives in the former governor’s claims. As it is in his financial abracadabra so it is in his political persuasions. The paths are so covered in blindfolds, veneers and facades that always they leave the ordinary man in doubt and the informed with distrust. And that is the real difference between him and his successor. People encounter Gov. Obiano and behold a trustworthy man. Simple.

Sincerely, Sir Obi still has some following among his fold but they leave in droves the moment they opt to pause and ponder some issues critically, some things do not add up. This propaganda-heavy approach to politics which tastes like the style of Adolf Hitler’s chief social manipulator, Joseph Goebbels whose maxim is "never admit a lie - simply keep repeating it," is what scares away some of his followers.

Since 2014 they have been spewing deluges of falsehood against his not-willing-to-fight back successor without proof yet their huge flaws they cannot even explain. Time and again, he and his aides over these three years crave media space to soil the image of Dr. Obiano. “If you have to do it every day,” states Mignon Mclaughlin, in his 1960 classical work, ‘The Neurotic Notebook’, “for God’s sake learn to do it well.”

The worst is that the facts that when the Obi camp needs to clear an issue, and they are presented a good opportunity, they fail to do so or just flunk it in a trite explanation. Imagine this explanation to the demand that Obiano should refund a certain N7.5 billion being bill Obi reportedly incurred while he chaperoned his successor’s first election, which the director-general of that election campaign, Chief Joe Martins Uzodike made openly in live broadcast appearances in the state in the ThisDay publication. In reply to the oft asked question, Obi said he never asked for such a payment and observed that “nobody on earth will leave money and go and beg the person he left the money for to give him some.”

Plausible argument if that was the only thing he said. The flaws emerge in appraising the whole reply he offered. He said: “If I was desperate, I could have comfortably taken just $30 million and it will remain $126 million.” And this presents another hint that our saint, during his tenure could “easily” go to Anambra’s till and help himself. This makes one remember that George Orwell once wrote, "The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side. He has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them."

When one ponders these and further asks himself why Sir Obi is sweating and toiling on the campaign fields for the Anambra gubernatorial poll when he is not a candidate, the question to ask is: What is he looking for? Is he seeking to avenge anything on Obiano or who? Is he looking for a chance again on the till through a proxy or is it ego?

It is obvious that in the Anambra election, Obi is playing the Orwell script of seeking to “control the past” (as he wanted to control Obiano but failed) and to “command the future" by seeking to hoist his follower, Osaeloka Obaze of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the governor’s seat in Awka. That is playing God. Bertolt Brecht cautions that “sometimes it is more important to be human”. Anambra is not Obi’s estate. The people are wise and independent-minded. They cannot stomach a tin god, and definitely not anyone who they have doubts of his or her purposes. Therefore, like he failed in his anxious bid to control Anambra’s past the people will not want him to command their future.

Politics / #anambraelection – “recession Out, Investors In” by anonymousIP2: 12:37pm On Nov 04, 2017
@VIVIANGIST

This is stating it as clearly as former American Vice President Joe Biden did on the re-election campaign trail back in 2012 when he proclaimed to a crowd of cheering supporters in Detroit, Michigan, “Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive”!

As far as bumper stickers go, Governor Willie Obiano has a compelling catalogue of achievements on the security and economic fronts to adorn the colourful profile of a thousand bumper stickers. But his re-election is not expected to be half as tough as Obama’s 2012 summer run against Mitt Romney. Obiano’s record has placed him beyond the optimistic aspirations of the most ambitious opponents in the forth- coming election. His vision and creative policies have saved the state from economic recession and in the process foisted some sort of political recession on the state that has left the political landscape starved of formidable opposition.

But politicians are creatures of habit, and like the Bourbons that ruled most of Europe centuries ago, the political actors in Anambra seem to have learnt nothing and forgotten nothing from the past. So, the race is on, and following the same familiar pattern of intra-elite war with little or no bearing on the real issues of concern to the electorate. In its current form, the race to the polls is simply a battle between progressives, swept along by the discernible outcome of Obiano’s strong ideas and transformative vision and those die hard traditionalists stuck in time with nostalgia about the fading era of strong men like Peter Obi.

This divide has made the race primarily a contest between Governor Willie Obiano and his predecessor, Peter Obi. It really could have been a tripod but for the fact that Tony Nwoye of the APC is generally perceived as bereft of meaningful political capital. His antecedent is a troubling chronicle of political thuggery and the fact that the APC as a political vehicle is anathema in the region. And things couldn’t get any worse than recent revelations by the World Bank that President Buhari’s declared obsession is with developing the North at the expense of the rest of the country.

All of a sudden, whatever little merit there was to Nwoye’s dangling carrot of linking Anambra to the centre has been completely pulverized by this revelation. Successful political campaigns are scarcely built on such parochial vision in a plural society, except of course you’re running under the moniker of Trump or Buhari. The party was over for Nwoye long before it started.

In reality therefore, besides ceremonial opposition by other contenders, Obi’s stooge, Oseloka Obaze has emerged as the main opposition candidate. The intrigues and drama that thrust Obaze into the fray created deep disaffection within the state PDP structure but cleared the coast for the former governor to embark on his most impossible political task yet—that of finding a replacement for his high performing successor. It is a self-imposed task and one that may eventually define the final stages of an uneasy journey to self a demystification. Without doubt, Peter Obi had woven a larger than life myth around himself in his two terms as governor. He was widely regarded as the strongman of Anambra politics and chief political strategist of the South East. Those who could read the crystal ball predicted a brilliant future for him as a statesman, post governor’s lodge. What with the invaluable backing of the late Ikemba of Nnewi as founder and backbone of the APGA dynasty and the determined leadership of the politically astute Chief Victor Umeh to steer the party through the intrigues and rough-hewn paths of partisan politics. Obi was raised on goodly political heritage.

This reputation prompted former president Goodluck Jonathan to snap him into his strategy team as soon as he vacated government house Awka. His inexplicable defection to the PDP was considered a major victory for PDP strategists and the president’s head hunters. With soaring ratings, he was revered as the potent talisman that would ensure that GEJ got re-elected. The rest they say is history. Overnight, his questionable ratings collapsed even as he moved from the centre to the side lines of politics in Anambra. Unwilling to accept his diminished political fortunes, he has emerged from the margins of state politics to test his weight against the tide of public opinion in the ongoing race for the guber crown in November.

His latest move signifies a major misstep in a series of catastrophic political miscalculations since he wandered outside the shadows of the party that brought him to fame and political relevance. Isolated at the periphery, and opposed to the disposition of well-meaning citizens even in his own divided party, Obi is out to test the APGA slogan of NKEABU NKEANYI to see whether it truly means anything to the people of Anambra.

Left with nothing to swear by, Obi swore by his own blood on national media and declared himself a political gladiator with a penchant for defeating incumbents. Nothing, he opined, could save Obiano from the sad fate of those who found themselves opposed to Peter Obi’s political interests. Such exaggerated notions of self and the illusory political value of presidential aides like Peter Obi were the slow burning trigger that led to the electoral woes of former president Jonathan. This self-serving estimation birthed an epic decline and turning point in Peter Obi’s political career. Left on his own after the presidential polls, with no real grassroots base, he turned to his spin doctors to weave a media profile of him that is far removed from reality. He put his political fortunes on the line when he turned his back on APGA. His switch to PDP and appointment to the federal cabinet were designed to give him the clout he needed to set up an alternative power base to confront APGA. PDP stalwarts in Anambra admit that a positive re-election bid for GEJ would have reinforced the myth around Obi and given him the latitude he needed, like the Uba brothers to make his own unilateral imposition on who could become the next governor of the state.

This egocentric ambition was also confirmed by some of his close political associates who conceded that; stripped of the federal cover he so craved, Peter Obi completely unravelled and, in present form lacks the clout to make a dent in the deep rooted APGA structure. For 12 straight years, APGA has excelled at addressing the state’s fundamental political and economic problems and in the last three years witnessed unprecedented improvement in security and economic growth under Obiano. At the root of this APGA miracle is the little known Swiss model of power rotation between the Swiss Cantons that has ensured centuries of remarkable stability in Switzerland. This Model thrives on economic and social capital equity for all parts of a territory with an inclusive power sharing formula for all units as stakeholders in the collective fortunes of a sovereign territory.

The guy is just a broke ass, money miss road --- trying hard to be relevant. The small money he saw got into his head ... imagine spending roughly 25k with girls and you bringing it to social media !! That money cannot get a good bottle of wine for the "real big people" . I just pray that ladies must have learnt from this ... You can make it on your own!! Bend down, make money and choose who to associate with ... your status in life will bring people who are your class -- your way #Positivevibes --- Viviangist said so!

Education / How Much Longer Should Children Tolerate Being Caned At School? by anonymousIP2: 12:11pm On Oct 23, 2017
@VIVIANGIST

To be on the receiving end of a cane, is the common nightmare of nearly every kid who's strongly extroverted, unsuccessful at maths, consistent with poor grades, reports late to school, fails to turn in assignments as and when due, unlucky to be included in mass punishments and likewise, other varieties of offenses that could warrant being inflicted with a good measure of bodily pain.

Caning a child to enhance performance, or modify character, is a disguised act of slavery! It's no different from beating a horse in order to get the best out of it, or the consistent use of the whip by colonial slave owners in ensuring compliance and control over the early black slaves. School children are twice as much terrified of teachers holding sticks, than they are of angry soldiers armed with guns. With every stroke of the cane, the self-esteem of a child is slowly demolished. How much longer should children tolerate being whipped in school?

Corporal punishment has outlived its usefulness. Long lasting discipline isn't enforced through beating a child with a stick. It is rather enforced through love, patience, genuine concern, effective counseling and tolerance. Violence against children in whatever form, is a violation of the rights of the child. You cannot discipline a child for wrongdoing, by wrongly violating his or her rights. Two wrongs do not make a right. It is therefore the right of every child to politely refuse physical maltreatment.

I'm often referred to the biblical instruction on the use of the 'rod' in child-rearing. Well, God didn't issue any of such command. Solomon did, and likewise, other opinionated authors of the Book of Proverbs. It's about time Christians won the war on differentiating between God's direct commands and the private opinions of biblical characters.

Many times, angry teachers take out their frustration on students. Amazingly, while some teachers go as far as caning students on their backs and necks, other teachers awfully discipline their students with a ridiculous number of strokes of the cane. Recently, I made small talk with a group of school children who narrated to me how one of them was mercilessly caned 52 times by his female teacher for forgetting a notebook at home.

Nigeria must urgently tag along with other progressive nations in Africa who've rightfully abolished all forms of violence against children. Corporal punishment is not a guarantee for modification of character, neither has it eradicated indiscipline in schools despite our heavy reliance on its use. It only guarantees fear, low self-esteem and eventual rebellion. Teachers should learn to think outside the box for creative and effective ways of disciplining deviant children. Violating the rights of the child isn't one of them!

When petrol went to N145 under PMB, Nigerians held their peace, unlike when they shut the country in 2012. The difference is trust. Simple.
