Anambra Declares Monday November 18, Public Holiday in Honour of Zik. The Government of Anambra State has declared Monday, November 18, 2019 a Public Holiday in honour of the great Owelle of Onitsha, Right Honourable Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. Following this declaration Monday, December 18, 2019 shall be observed as a work free day in Anambra State. The Public Holiday which was declared to mark the birthday of Nigeria's only indigenous Governor General and pioneer President should have held on his actual birthday which is Saturday, December 16, 2019 but has to be observed on Monday December 18 for obvious reasons. A statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Anambra State, Mr James Eze says that the declaration came on the heels of repeated appeals by the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano to the Federal Government to declare a national public holiday in honour of the great Zik as has been done for other illustrious leaders across the continent who led their respective countries from the shackles of colonial rule to independence. According to him, Governor Obiano had used the opportunity of the commissioning of Zik Mausoleum in January this year to appeal that Nigeria should set aside a Public Holiday in honour of the great Zik just as Ghana did for Kwame Nkrumah, as Kenya did for Jomoh Kenyatta, as Tanzania did for Julius Nyerere and as Angola did for Agostinho Neto. He pointed out that the Great Zik of Africa had so much influence on the nationalist struggles for independence across Africa and played a unique brand of all inclusive politics that left no place for ethnicity and religion all of which make the case for a national day in his honour very compelling. Therefore, from this year onwards, December 16 has been set aside in Anambra State to commemorate Right Hon Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, celebrate his legacies and reflect on the ideals and values that the great statesman lived and died for. It is expected that in blazing the trail by setting a day aside for Zik, Anambra State Government is making the case for a national holiday in honour of Zik a compelling one. It must be remembered that the Great Zik of Africa was one of the greatest Pan-Africanists who devoted his life and times to the struggle for the emancipation of Africa and people of African descent. Till today, Zik remains the only Nigerian President who spoke Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba fluently and the only one whose children bore names that reflect the three major ethnic groups in the country. In addition, Zik made great sacrifices and placed his life in so many grave dangers while leading the struggle for Nigeria's independence and he also made so many concessions and compromises after independence to give Nigeria the chance she deserved. A national public holiday in his honour is therefore an equivalent of giving honour to whom it is due.

As we remember the 86th posthumous birthday of Odumegwu Ojukwu, this is a very inspiring speech of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu during the civil war in 1969. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE5GPBbNI-E |
The Second Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Memorial Lecture Good leaders are trailblazers, making a path for others to follow. They inspire their people to reach higher, dream bigger, and achieve greater. Suffice it to say that the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Eze Igbo Gburu Gburu and Ikemba Nnewi is, by all standards, a good and exemplary leader. In view of these rare qualities, the Vice Chancellor of the citadel of learning named after this legend, Professor Greg Chukwudi Nwakoby, on behalf of the Council, Senate, Staff and Students of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, is organizing the second Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Memorial Lecture tomorrow, Monday, November 4, 2019. The lecture is to mark the birthday of the late doyen of Igboland. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu was born on November 4, 1933 at Zungeru in the present Niger state to Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, an Igbo businessman from Nnewi. Sir Louis was in the transport business; he took advantage of the business boom during the Second World War to become one of the richest men in Nigeria. Ezeigbo began his educational career in Lagos. Emeka Ojukwu had his secondary education at CMS Grammar School, Lagos in 1943 at the age of 10. He later transferred to King’s College, Lagos in 1944 where he was involved in a controversy leading to his brief imprisonment for humiliating a white British colonial teacher who assaulted a black woman. This generated widespread coverage in local newspapers. At 13, Emeka’s father sent him overseas to study in the United Kingdom, first at Epsom College and later at Lincoln College, Oxford University, where he earned a master’s degree in History. He returned to Nigeria in 1956.Chukwuemeka Ojukwu joined the civil service in Eastern Nigeria as an Administrative Officer at Udi. In 1957, after two years of working with the colonial civil service and seeking to break away from his father’s influence over his civil service career, he left and joined the military, initially enlisted as a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in Zaria. Ojukwu’s decision was forced by his father’s pulling of political strings with the then Governor-General of Nigeria to prevent Ikemba from getting an officer-cadetship. They however believed that Emeka would not stick to the grueling NCO schedule; but Emeka persevered. It was not until an embarrassing situation between Emeka and a drill sergeant named Fort-Lamy wherein Emeka corrected the Sergeant’s mispronunciation of the safety catch of the Lee-Enfield rifle that the British Depot Commander recommended Emeka for an officer’s commission. Emeka proceeded, first, to the Royal West African Frontier Force Training School, Ghana and Eaton Hall where he received his commission in1958 as a Second Lieutenant. He was one of the first and few university graduates to receive an army commission. Ojukwu was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1964 and posted to be in charge of fifth Battalion, Kano. On Monday, January 17, 1966, then Lt. Col. Odumegwu-Ojukwu was appointed Military Governor of Eastern Region. By May 29, 1966, there was a pogrom in northern Nigeria during which Nigerians of southeastern Nigeria origin were targeted and killed. This presented problems for Odumegwu Ojukwu. He did everything to prevent reprisals and even encouraged people to return, as assurances for their safety had been given. In January 1967, the Nigerian military leadership went to Aburi, Ghana, for a peace conference. The implementation of the agreements reached at Aburi fell apart upon the leadership’s return to Nigeria and on May 30, 1967, as a result of this, Colonel Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared Eastern Nigeria a sovereign state, to be known as BIAFRA. On July 6, 1967, Gowon declared war and attacked Biafra. Ikemba later left the country and after 13 years in exile, the Federal Government of Nigeria under Alhaji Shehu Shagari granted an official pardon to him and opened the road for his triumphant return in 1982. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 1994, married former Miss Bianca Onoh (Former Miss Nigeria and ex Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain). On November 26, 2011, Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu died in the United Kingdom following a brief illness, aged 78. If he was alive, Ezeigbo gburu gburu would have been 86 years old today. Until his death, he was the leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, having contested Presidential election under the party. In view of those outstanding accomplishments, the Anambra state government, in 2014, renamed the former Anambra State University to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. From the foregoing, it is obvious that Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a shining star worth celebrating. Thus, everyone is invited to this epoch memorial lecture with the theme, ‘‘NDIGBO IN THE CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN POLITICS: Problems, Prospects and Way Forward’’ tomorrow, Monday, November 4, 2019 by 11am at Chief Ben Nwazojie Law Auditorium, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus. Professor Kingsley Muoghalu will be the Guest Speaker. Governor Willie Obiano is expected as the Special Guest of Honour, while Senator Ike Ekweremadu will Chair the event. You are all invited. horsepower101:The project will be completed, at least the first phase. Let's keep our hands crossed. With dedication to the project it will be completed in 2yrs., even less. APGA is about Continue-Complete-Commission-Commence. |
horsepower101:Nobody said the amount will complete the entire work. The amount is just for works in the incoming fiscal year, probably more money may still channeled within the fiscal year if need be, while more appropriations will still follow in subsequent budgets towards the project completion. |
AuntLaVIV:This movie is a must watch. The producers did a fantastic work on the new living in bondage |
VicThory:6 billion was appropriated to the project in the 2020 budget. So expect to see pictorial updates soon |

Anambra State Govt. Sets Up Support Fund For Onitsha Fire Accident Victims, Moves To Create A More Autonomous Fire Service Since the fire of Wednesday, October 16, 2019, which occurred when a tanker laden with petrol fell on Upper Iweka in Onitsha and led to fire that spread up to Ochanja Market through the open drainage, people have been seeking from the government how they can assist the victims. The government is grateful to these people and many others who are moved by the tragedy. Truly, we are brothers' and sisters' keepers. Governor Willie Obiano has, therefore, opened a bank account to assist the fire victims. It is known as the Anambra State Victims Support Account. The account number is 5030105029, Fidelity Bank PLC. It is to be administered by the distinguished sons and daughters of our state who serve as trustees of the Anambra State Security Trust Fund led by Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, MFR, Chairman of Chisco Group. All Anambra indigenes, friends, in - laws and well wishers are encouraged to give generously to our brothers and sisters who are now all of a sudden in dire need of assistance. Let us demonstrate, once more, our famed abundance of humanism. Meanwhile, Governor Willie Obi has initiated a move to grant the Anambra State Fire Service greater autonomy. Subject to approval by the Anambra State House of Assembly, the law setting up the state Fire Service will be amended to make it independent of the state Ministry of Public Utilities or any other ministry. The autonomy will free it from unnecessary bureaucratic encumbrances and enable it to respond more effectively to the challenges of its mandate. Consequently, the agency will have as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Air Vice Marshall Ben Chiobi, mni, who is currently the Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Creative Security as well as Coordinator of the Anambra State Integrated Security System. Once again, Governor Obiano and, indeed, the entire Anambra State Government thank all Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari, for their solidarity since the fire of October 16. Anambra State will always be the Light of the Nation. Signed C. Don Adinuba Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment |
