Education / NLC, Zamfara To Embark On An Indefinite Strike On Monday by Anstalk(f): 10:01pm On Sep 10, 2017
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Zamfara Chapter, said that the union would embark on a total strike on Monday following the expiration of a three-week ultimatum given to the state government by the association

The Chairman NLC, Zamfara Chapter, Bashir Mafara, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Gusau.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the NLC had given the state government three weeks ultimatum to address the problems of workers in the state.

Some of the workers grievances with the state government include the non-implementation of workers annual increments, promotion and the non-payment of 1, 400 newly recruited staff recruited more than three years ago.

Other issues according to the NLC, is that refusal of the government to implement minimum wage for local government staff and primary school teachers as well as non- payment of pensioners’ gratuities.

The NLC said it was worrisome that primary school teachers and local government workers in Zamfara state were still receiving between N7,500 and N8,000 as monthly salary.

The NLC chairman said that the union has been having consultations with the government officials, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Shinkafi, on how to resolve the issues.

He said that the government had failed to meet up with any of the agreement reached between the workers and the state government.

“Therefore, we are starting the strike tomorrow, Monday as announced three weeks ago.

“We have already announced that all the representatives of the NLC affiliated unions should meet tomorrow at NLC Secretariat by 10.00 am to mark the commencement of the strike”, he said.

Mr. Mafara, therefore, urged all workers to stay away from their places of works from tomorrow until the problems were addressed by the government.

NAN also recalls that the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Media and Publicity, Ibrahim Dosara, had earlier told journalists that the 21-day ultimatum was uncalled for.

Mr. Dosara maintained that Governor Abdul’aziz Yari had since directed the labour leaders in the state to come up with an authentic list of workers under the state government payroll without which the state government would not implement their demands.

Education / UNN Postpones 2017 Post-utme Screening Exam by Anstalk(f): 4:28pm On Sep 09, 2017
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has postponed its 2017 post-UTME screening exam earlier scheduled to start on Monday Sept. 11.

Its Registrar, Mr Chris Igbokwe announced this in a statement on Saturday in Nsukka.

The registrar said a new date would be made known to the general public.

“This is to inform the general public that 2017 post-UTME screening exam earlier scheduled to start on Monday Sept. 11 and end Saturday Sept. 16 has been postponed.

“An updated timetable for the rescheduled Post-UTME screening tests will be published later.

“Please visit UNN Website regularly for update,” he said.

Igbokwe said registration for the post-UTME exam was ongoing.

He urged candidates who made UNN their first choice and scored 200 and above that had been experiencing difficulties in generating invoice in their online registration to continue to try.

“For all enquiries, send an email to: customerservices.ict@unn.edu,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the postponement of the UNN 2017 screening exam might not be unconnected with the ongoing Academic staff Union of universities (ASUU)’s strike.

The proposed nationwide strike by non-academic staff of Nigeria universities (NASU) that would kick-off on Sept. 11also contributed to the development.

Crime / Policemen Aid Escape Of Suspects by Anstalk(f): 7:19pm On Sep 08, 2017
Six policemen in Abia command have been dismissed for negligence of duty and their role in the escape of suspects in custody.

The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Mr. Leye Oyebade, said they were particulary dismissed for their scandalous role in the escape of a number of suspects in custody.

Oyebade told journalists on Friday in Umuahia that the incident occurred at about 1.30 am last Saturday at the command’s headquarters on Bende Road, Umuahia.

He said that the suspects were detained in the anti-kidnapping section of the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command from where they escaped with two AK 47 rifles.

He said that the AK 47 rifles were kept outside the armoury for quick response to emergencies in the command to facilitate their escape.

Oyebade said that the dismissed operatives included two women and four men.

He pointed out that at the time of the incident, only one operative was on duty.

He said that the policeman on duty, whose identity was not disclosed, allegedly gave the key to one of the suspects, with which they opened the cell.

The police boss declined to disclose the number of the escapees.

He said that three of them, including Emeka Ukaegbu, Kingsley Anyim and Chijioke Chukwu, had been re-arrested.

He also said that one of the rifles had been recovered and gave the assurance that the command would re-arrest the fleeing suspects.

“The six officers have been taken through the force’s approved disciplinary action process and dismissed from the force.”
He said that one of the re-arrested suspects, Ukaegbu, in his confessional statement, disclosed where the remaining rifle was kept.

In an interview with newsmen, Ukaegbu said that the police were on the verge of recovering the rifle.

Speaking on how they escaped from cell, he said that they got the key from one of the dismissed police officers.

“When he gave me the key, I gave it to one girl who was also being detained for child trafficking.

“She opened the cell and all of us escaped,” Ukaegbu said, adding that “it was during our escape that we took two of the AK 47 rifles we found outside.”

Oyebade said that the dismissed operatives together with the suspects would be prosecuted at the end of the ongoing investigation.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command had also arrested 20 suspects in different criminal offences. (NAN)

Sports / FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Dele Alli by Anstalk(f): 10:39am On Sep 08, 2017
FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli after the player was caught making an obscene gesture during an England match, the world governing body announced on Friday.

Alli was caught sticking his middle finger up during the national side’s World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on Monday.

He said after the match the gesture had been directed as a joke at teammate Kyle Walker.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking on Thursday, had played down the incident.

“It’s true it’s not a fantastic gesture but it’s not a big issue. It was a joke in a moment with his teammate. I don’t think it’ll be a big issue with FIFA or with us.”

Alli, 21, has had a number of run-ins with the football authorities and has faced calls to curb his fiery temperament.

Politics / Anambra Election: Politicians Buy Voter Cards For N5,000 by Anstalk(f): 7:37am On Sep 08, 2017
Ahead of the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State, voter cards have become a precious commodity in the state.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that politicians were buying the cards for N5,000 each, depending on location.

In rural communities, the cards were sold for N5, 000 each while in urban areas owners of PVCs could make between N7,000 and N10,000 per card.

Corroborating our investigation, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Progressive Alliance in the November poll, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute such politicians according to extant laws.

He reminded eligible voters in the state not to mortgage their conscience and future by selling their voter cards.

He said buying and selling of voter cards were a major challenge facing the poll, noting that the acts were being perpetuated by vicious politicians.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to step up political enlightenment to educate voters on the negative impact of selling their PVCs.

Ezeemo, who spoke at his country home, Umuchu in Aguata Local Government Area of the state during a solidarity visit to him by youths of the old Aguata union on Thursday, advised the youths that it was their civic responsibility to use their votes to make positive change in the state.

He said, “It is your duty to make the rightful choice and as well ensure that the right person govern the state. As youths, you should shun greedy politicians whose stock in trade is to engage some of you, our future leaders, as thugs in order to actualise their selfish political ambition.”

He said, “Some people say poverty is responsible for the sale of their voter cards but I disagree with such position in that people should know that such act is criminal act.

“It is better for the people to tackle poverty by choosing the right leaders based on their ability and not based on monetary consideration.”

He urged voters to guard jealously their voter cards and come out in their numbers to exercise their franchise in the election.

Business / Senate Hires Cybercrime Expert To Probe Banks, MMM by Anstalk(f): 8:32pm On Sep 07, 2017
Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Communication Technology and Cybercrime, Senator Foster Ogola, on Thursday said the upper chamber of the National Assembly would probe deposit money banks used for transactions between Nigerians and a ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Movement.

Ogola, while speaking at an interactive session between the committee and key players in the financial sector, said an international expert on cyberspace and banking crimes was already in the country on the invitation by the committee to expose all those involved in how MMM defrauded Nigerians.

He said, “We need to secure our cyberspace and financial sector against all forms of crimes or frauds as seen with the MMM operators who came, in collaboration with insiders, and expressly entered into the banking system, duped and bolted out.

“We have to stop anything that will defraud us, and the first step now is to expose all the banks involved in the MMM fraud.

“As a chartered fraud examiner, when the scam called MMM ponzi scheme came with its 30 per cent interest in 30 days early last year, I told people then that it was a fraud but many refused to listen and some of them later learnt their lessons in bitter ways.”

The lawmaker also announced that the Senate would soon come up with a legislation that would make digital education compulsory in both primary and secondary schools.

Ogola explained that the interactive session was to gather the inputs of all the stakeholders to the amendments that would soon be carried out on the Cybercrime Act.

The Central Bank of Nigeria and the other banks at the session identified creation of a centralised database anchored on the National Identity Card scheme as the best way to prevent cybercrime in the country.

The Nigeria Union in South Africa has protested against the hijack of a house belonging to a Nigerian Baptist missionary in that country.

Mr Theodore Ezeunara, Chairman of the union in Johannesburg South, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that persons claiming to be members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a political party, allegedly took over the house.

He said that the EFF members chased away the tenants in the building and brought in new persons.

He said that efforts made by the owner of the house and the union to stop the hijacking fell on deaf ears.

He said that the union had lodged a complaint with the police on the hijacking and trespassing on a property.

The owner of the house, who did not want his name mentioned for safety, said that he bought the property in 2011.

“The house is a bungalow, comprising of four bedroom flat, two-bedroom guest house and two rooms boy quarters.

“Last week, some people came to the house, claiming to be members of a political party, drove away the tenants, alleging that they (tenants) were foreigners.

“It is clear that this is a case of hijacking and trespassing on a private property,” he said.

Mr Adetola Olubajo, President of Nigeria Union, said that the case had been reported to the national secretariat of the union.

“We will hand it over to our national legal adviser to take it up,” he said. (NAN)

Politics / Nigerian Content Board Shut Down By Ijaw Youths by Anstalk(f): 7:00am On Sep 01, 2017
Angry members of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have locked down the headquarters of Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in Yenagoa.

The youths occupied the office and pulled down a section of the fence of the building because NCDMB had opened new offices in Lagos and Abuja contrary to the provisions of the Local Content Act.

The Bayelsa Police Command has the youths to be calm.

The youths stormed the office located along Isaac Boro Expressway at about 9:45 am on Thursday and forced their way into the premises and pulled down a section of the fence.

The Chairman, IYC, Central Zone, Mr. Tari Porri, who led the protest, said the opening of the new NCDMB offices in Lagos and Abuja was contrary to Section 71, sub-section 3 of the NCDMB laws.

He stated that NCDMB Act empowered the Board to open offices only in oil and gas producing areas.

“This place has been left redundant and the Executive Secretary now operates from Lagos and Abuja and comes here only once in three months.

“This is unacceptable! The Executive Secretary should stay here with us; the NCDMB laws stipulate that offices should be opened in only oil and gas areas, but the board has gone ahead to open offices in areas such as Lagos and Abuja which are not oil and gas producing areas.’’

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Asuquo Amba, who arrived the scene urged the youths to remain calm and shun trouble.

“The state Governor, Seriake Dickson, is already aware of your grievances and he has promised to wade in the matter.

“I have to appreciate you for making this protest a very peaceful one, and I will still employ you to remain peaceful. But we should respect the sanctity of this place as the headquarters.

”I have listened to all your grievances. I am in touch with the state governor and I have spoken to him and if there is anybody to lead this protest, it is the state governor himself.

“The Governor has personally told me to come and address you, compile your grievances and forward them to him.

“The Executive Secretary of the Board has given me the assurance that all the issues that you have raised would be addressed and it would be addressed in such a way that we would have a peaceful environment,” he told the protesters.

Politics / I Won’t Rest Until Nigeria Prospers, Says Buhari by Anstalk(f): 4:12am On Sep 01, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he would not rest until Nigerians see the country of their dream.

Buhari made the promise in his Eid-el-Kabir message to Nigerians, which he personally signed.

“Once again, I assure you that this administration, which has made the security, economic well-being and prosperity of all Nigerians its priority, will not rest on its oars until we see the Nigeria of our dream,” the President promised.

Buhari, who returned to the country penultimate Saturday after spending 104 days in London, United Kingdom on medical grounds, again thanked Nigerians who prayed for his recovery and had continued to extend their goodwill and support after his return to the country.

The President said, “Indeed your fervent and sincere prayers, which cut across religions, political and ethnic divides, have energised me to re-dedicate myself and this administration to the task of building a great Nigeria.

“On the joyous occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration, I appeal to all Nigerians to rise against the odds, keep our prejudices aside and strengthen the bonds of friendship and unity to keep our country together.

“For Muslims all over the world, this celebration is to commemorate the trials and triumph of Prophet Ibrahim.

“As we celebrate, I sincerely believe that our nation can make rapid progress on all fronts if we re-enact the exemplary virtues, typified by Prophet Ibrahim, through his sacrifice, patience, steadfastness, generosity and obedience to Allah’s command and constituted authority.”

He added, “We must learn to see ourselves as brothers and sisters from the same heritage, who must come to terms with the African proverb that ‘a family tie is like a tree, it can bend but it cannot break.’”

Also, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; and the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, on Thursday called on Nigerians to pray for Nigeria and rededicate themselves to building a strong, united, economically sound and politically stable country.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, felicitated with the Muslim faithful and urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for the greater glory of the country.

He said, “This is a time we must be our brother’s keeper by sharing our worldly goods with them. This is a time we must pray for our leaders, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, and all those saddled with the responsibilities of leadership at all levels in our country.

“With prayers, I have no doubt that God will inspire and guide our leaders to initiate and sustain policies and programmes that will guarantee peace, security, economic growth, political stability and social cohesion in our nation.”

Ekweremadu, in a separate statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, urged Nigerians to eschew all forms of recrimination and imbibe self sacrifice, forgiveness and other virtues that promote national unity and development.

The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have also called for more prayers for Nigeria as the nation’s Muslim faithful join their counterparts in the world to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.

The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in a statement in Abuja, on Thursday enjoined Nigerians, especially Muslims, to use this period to imbibe the significance of the holy festival which is the celebration of sacrifice.

Odigie-Oyegun said, “We urge citizens to eschew all forms of violence, live in peaceful coexistence and be our brother’s keeper. Recently, the nation has witnessed some agitations with the potential of undermining the unity and our relationship across religious and ethnic divides.”

The PDP called on Nigerians not to see Eid-el-Kabir as an opportunity to party or engage in merry-making only. Rather, it asked them to see it as a time to pray for the country and its leaders.

The chairman of the party, Ahmed Makarfi, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

The statement read, “God in His infinite mercies and immeasurable powers has again afforded us the opportunity to celebrate yet another Eid-el-Kabir.

“As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, I would like to urge us to exhibit the spirit of love, obedience to God and sacrifice which are some of its hallmarks and historical significance.”

Politics / Pop star Justin Bieber’s testicle puts nurse in trouble by Anstalk(f): 5:49pm On Aug 29, 2017
The female nurse terminated after being accused of illegally accessing pop star Justin medical record when he was taken in for twisted testicle, is crying for justice.

Her employer accused her of accessing Bieber’s medical file to confirm rumour that he had sexually transmitted infection.

The former employee at Northwell Health in Long Island has sued, claiming wrongful termination based on alleged incident involving the pop star’s medical records.

Bieber visited Northwell Health in Long Island in May, fearing he had twisted a testicle playing soccer.

Now, New York employment attorney David H. Rosenberg tells Billboard that his client Kelly Lombardo, a former staffer at Northwell, was fired over accusations that she illegally accessed Bieber’s medical file during the May 18, 2017 visit.

On the day in question, according to Rosenberg and an administrative action filed Tuesday (Aug. 29) with the New York Division of Human Rights, Lombardo heard a rumour that Bieber was in for a sexually transmitted infection.

But she alleges she didn’t believe the STI claim and maintains that she never had access to the pop star’s files nor any contact with him at all.

Rosenberg says that when Lombardo denied the accusations to her employers, they implied that as a young female, she must have been curious to know why Bieber was in the ER.

Lombardo is filing for administrative action with the New York State Division of Human Rights, alleging gender discrimination and wrongful termination.

“My client never accessed Mr. Bieber’s medical file. She was falsely accused of doing it because of her gender,” Rosenberg tells Billboard.

“We look forward to vigorously prosecuting these claims at the New York Division of Human Righ

Education / NANS Gives ASUU 21 Days Ultimatum To Call Off The Strike by Anstalk(f): 5:06pm On Aug 29, 2017
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) says it is looking forward to the resolution of the standoff between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.

NANS’s President, Chinonso Obasi, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, urged both parties to engage in constructive dialogue as they meet over the strike.

ASUU had on Aug. 14, embarked on an indefinite strike to demand the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government on conditions of service, funding, university autonomy and academic freedom.

The students association had given the Federal Government a 21 days ultimatum to resolve the issues to enable students return to school or face a total shut of activities across nation.

“As the Federal Government plans to meet with ASUU on the ongoing indefinite strike, NANS is calling on the parties to engage in constructive engagement.

“`Such engagement will enable both parties to resolve the lingering issues that led to the declaration of the strike, save the education sector and the future of Nigerian students.

“Incessant and prolonged strike is one of factors responsible for the falling standard of education in Nigeria apart from the attendant untoward hardship to the students and their parents.

“Though ASUU had called for an emergency Senate meeting to deliberate on the strike and the way forward before the Federal Government’s call for a meeting with the union, NANS will await the outcome of meeting to determine the next line of action,’’ he said.

He urged both parties to demonstrate a great sense of patriotism in resolving the issues and avert unfortunate developments associated with the idleness of young people.

Politics / Why I Abstained From Anambra PDP Primaries – Oduah by Anstalk(f): 10:56am On Aug 29, 2017
Sen. Stella Oduah, one of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship aspirants in Anambra, said she abstained from the party’s primary election on Monday because candidates were imposed on the party.

The lawmaker made this known in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

She described the development as unacceptable, particularly for a party that was just trying to get its footing after undergoing a major leadership crisis.

She said party members that were not part of the struggle during the crisis period were suddenly imposed on the party members.

“There must be incentive for loyalty. Party loyalists must have a say.

“When you deny their participation, you deny them that incentive they get from being the torchbearers of the party. So, I think it’s morally wrong for this to happen.

“Secondly, we are just coming out from `godfatherism’ that pervades the politics of Anambra PDP.

“Thank God for court judgment but with what is happening, they are bringing us back to that era where we will be subjected to one man imposing a candidate on us.

“The fundamental process that led to the three-man delegates was so chaotic and the default was so fundamental.

“My people were disenfranchised and I don’t want to be part of that process because it is injustice.

“When you have imposition, you have blocked that hope for them.

“You have made it difficult and impossible for them to aspire to be anything within the party because you are telling them that you can bring somebody from anywhere to impose on them.

“Also, bringing somebody from outside the party and who has not stayed for long, it means that you are saying that you lack capacity within party members.

“But I don’t think we lack capacity, I think PDP has enough capacity to run for that election,’’ she said.

The lawmaker said she was concerned that the development could lead to the party’s defeat in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Oduah, representing Anambra North, had threatened to withdraw from Monday’s PDP governorship primaries on grounds that the party’s ward congresses was fraught with “irregularities and sabotage’’.

She disclosed that she had petitioned the Chairman, PDP National Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, for a review of the delegates’ list, failure of which would make her withdraw from the exercise.

Travel / Immigration Bans Cash Payments At Passport Offices by Anstalk(f): 4:41pm On Aug 28, 2017
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has banned cash payments for passport processing as part of efforts to eliminate corruption at all passport offices nationwide.‎

NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

He‎ said the Comptroller General of the NIS, Muhammad Babandede, had directed that henceforth all payments for passport processing must be done online and through designated banks‎.‎

He said the NIS boss had, in a circular, directed‎ all passport control officers not to allow cash payments in any of the passport premises.

“All payments in respect to passport processing are to be done by applicants through banks to generate application ID and reference number on the NIS portal and not through an individual or touts,” Mr. James said.

This followed reports by PREMIUM TIMES exposing entrenched corruption at passport offices, where Immigration officials connive with touts to rip off applicants.

According to him, the NIS CG has also ordered an‎ investigation into allegations of passport racketeering at some passport offices in Lagos with a view to sanitising the system.‎

Mr. James therefore urged passport applicants to ensure that all categories of Nigerian passports fees were done online.

‎“Passport applicants are therefore strongly advised to visit the NIS website www.immigration.gov.ng to confirm the approved fees for all categories of Nigerian Passports and age groups before making payments,” he added.

He said the management of all passport offices have been directed to paste all information required at the premises to guide applicants in line with the executive orders.

He urged Nigerians to direct any complaint or enquiries to 07080607900 and the email address nis.servicom@nigeriaimmigration.gov.ng.

The spokesperson advised applicants against patronising touts or agents‎ in order to ensure efficient service delivery.

The NIS boss had vowed to stamp out corruption in the operations of the NIS as part of efforts to reposition the Service and ensure efficient service delivery.

Politics / Updates On Anambra Election: PDP Aspirants Hijack Delegates List by Anstalk(f): 2:09pm On Aug 28, 2017
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to hold its primary election today (Monday) to decide who will be its candidate in the November 18 exercise.

Six candidates; Ifeanyi Ubah, Oseloka Obaze, Stella Oduah, Alex Obi-Ogbolu, John Emeka and Linda Ikpeazu, are to battle for the party’s governorship ticket.

However, ahead of the primary, some of the aspirants are alleging that the list of delegates to the election have been hijacked.

The aspirants claim the issue may make or mar today’s exercise and are appealing to the PDP Delegate Appeal Panel led by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Dave Umahi to look into the matter.

This comes after the election of the governorship candidate for the APC, Mr Tony Nwoye, on Sunday.

Mr Nwoye, a member of the House of Representatives scored 2,146 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Senator Andy Ubah who got 931 votes.

Sports / Iwobi Ruled Out Of Nigeria Qualifiers by Anstalk(f): 4:52pm On Aug 27, 2017
Nigeria have suffered a blow ahead of next Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in Uyo after Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi withdrew from the squad with a thigh muscle strain.

The 21-year-old will also miss the September 4 showdown against African champions Cameroon in Yaounde, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

He was due to join the Super Eagles training camp on Monday after Arsenal's Premier League game at Liverpool later on Sunday.

Iwobi, the nephew of legendary Nigeria star Jay-Jay Okocha, had played in Nigeria’s first two World Cup qualifiers against Zambia and Algeria, scoring in a 2-1 win in Zambia in October last year.

He has been replaced by CSKA Moscow striker Aaron Samuel, who was placed on standby last week.

Samuel made the last of seven international appearances two years ago.
