Crime / Lagos Baale Crushes Wife To Death With Jeep by Anstalk(f): 7:38am On Dec 11, 2017
A traditional ruler in Ise, Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, Taibu Ogunbanjo, has crushed his wife to death with his jeep.

Ogunbanjo is currently in police detention.

The baale runs a block-moulding factory at Folu, a community in Ibeju Lekki.

According to Punch, Taibu and his wife, Rotimi Ogunbanjo, got married three years ago, but the marriage had been fraught with misunderstanding and fights.

The couple reportedly had a disagreement on Thursday, December 7, 2017, after which Rotimi was said to have gone to the Baale’s factory and damaged some blocks on the premises.

Ogunbanjo was said to have entered his Toyota Highlander, and was driving out of the premises in anger when he knocked down his wife.

A community leader, Akinsipe told the newspaper that the wife died on the spot, adding that the corpse had been deposited at the Epe General Hospital.

He said, “He (Taibu) is the baale of the community. He and his wife had been having issues since they got married. I did not know what actually happened between them on that day, but I learnt that they had a disagreement in the morning.

“She went to his block factory and destroyed some blocks arranged on the premises. He entered his vehicle angrily and as he was driving out of the premises, the wife tried to stop him . He hit her and she died on the spot.”

He added that the matter was taken to the Akodo Police Station, adding that the baale had been arrested.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, also confirmed Rotimi’s death to Punch.

He said the command would investigate the matter to unravel the motive behind the baale’s action .

He said, “We are investigating the matter to find out what transpired between the man and his wife before the incident happened.

“They were having family issues, which led the woman to the block industry to destroy things.

“We want to know whether what the man did was a reaction to what his wife did.

“We believe there is more to the ‘accident ’ than meets the eye because there was an altercation between them before the incident occurred.”

Oti said the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

Health / Kogi Doctors Extend Strike Notice Till 31 Dec by Anstalk(f): 6:46am On Dec 11, 2017
The Kogi chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) says it has extended to Dec.31 the ultimatum it gave to the state government to meet its demands or face strike.

Dr Godwin Tijani, the state chairman told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lokoja that the extension of the date was due to the reassurances from the state government to meet the demands before Dec. 31.

“Congress resolved to extend the ultimatum to Dec. 31, for the actualisation of those promises.

“However, with effect from Jan. 1, 2018, NMA will be left with no option but to commence total withdrawal of services in all hospitals in Kogi.

‘’This is on the condition that the state government fails to properly address the demands on or before Dec. 31,” Tijani said.

According to Tijani, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Haruna had also assured NMA that government would address its demands.

He said Haruna gave the assurance during the Emergency Congress Meeting (ECM) of the association on Dec. 8, which he attended with other top government officials.

“The Kogi NMA appreciates the Commissioner for Health, the Special Adviser on Health Matters and the Medical Elders for their role to ensuring industrial harmony in the health sector.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chapter, on Nov. 24, gave the state government the ultimatum to redeem the promises it gave the association in June 2017.

The state chairman said the decision to extend the ultimatum also emanated from the communiqué from the State Executive Council Meeting (SEC) of the association in Lokoja.

He said the the demands of the association include; failure of the state government to correct the salary underpayment of doctors in the Hospital Management Board (HMB).

NMA also demanded that continuous implementation of new tax regime be commensurate with implementation of staff promotion and annual increment.

Other demands are; that: the eight doctors cleared over three months ago should be paid their 11 to 12 months salary arrears, implementation of adjusted Consolidated Medical Salary scale, payment of four to five months backlog of salaries of doctors in public hospitals in the state.

NMA also called for payment of salaries of the newly employed doctors who it said assumed duty August 2017.

According to the association, its members do not yet understand the planned application of Clocking System and the payment of their salaries.

Tijjani expressed concern that the condition of doctors working with the Kogi Government has further deteriorated.

Business / Arthur Eze Dragged To UK Court For Pulling Out Of £5million Mansion Deal by Anstalk(f): 9:13am On Dec 06, 2017
Popular billionaire prince, Arthur Eze, has been sued for £1.8 million by a couple who claimed they were left stranded after he pulled out of buying their £5million mansion.

Daily Mail reports that the couple, identified as Richard and Deborah Conway, told a High Court that they were left stranded after Prince Eze pulled out of buying their £5million mansion.

According to them, they were already committed to buying a house in Cambridge and had to take out an expensive bridging loan when the deal with Prince Eze was no longer tenable.

The couple claims they were forced to sell their home at a reduced price of £4.2 million, and are suing the prince to recover losses as well as “family expenses”.

However Prince Eze, who is said to be worth £2 billion, denied breaching his contract with the couple. He has also counter-sued Mr. and Mrs Conway for the return of a £500,000 deposit.

Mr Conway, 62, said he and his wife wanted to “pay off all our debts and start again” with an eye on retirement when they put their home up for sale for £5 million.

Their lawyer, Matthew Collings, said: “It was necessary for them to obtain bridging finance to fill the huge hole left by Prince Eze’s failure to complete, and failure to pay the balance of the purchase price.”

The court heard they exchanged contracts for the nine-bedroom home in August 2015, but Prince Eze had been acting through a “go-between” and had never seen the house.

The 62-year-old prince, the founder of oil firm Atlas Oranto Petroleum, paid a 10 per cent deposit of £500,000 but now alleges the deal was void because the Conways agreed to pay the agent a “secret commission” to secure the sale.

The Conways, who denied any inappropriate conduct, said the agent contacted them initially without Prince Eze’s knowledge and later raised the prospect of a £75,000 agent’s fee.

They claim the agent then “threatened to scupper the deal” unless he was paid.

Testifying in court, Prince Eze said he had good intentions when he agreed to buy the house; stressing that he wanted “a genuine investment in the UK”.

“I wasn’t concerned about the price but I was concerned about people being open,” he said.

“I thought there was something funny going on,” he added.

The Prince rejected a suggestion he had pulled out of the deal because of a drastic drop in oil prices.

Judge Andrew Keyser QC reserved his judgement to a later date

Politics / Obiano Blasts Emeka Ojukwu Jnr: "You Are A Sad Irony Of Your Father" by Anstalk(f): 6:59am On Dec 03, 2017
Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has described Ojukwu Jr. as ‘a sad irony’ of his father, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

He said this while debunking a claim that he pestered Emeka Ojukwu to return to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

Son of the Biafran warlord had on November 15, dumped APGA, a political party believed to have been founded by his late father, for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

In a recent interview, Ojukwu Jr. said that Obiano had been lobbying for him to return to the party, adding that the Anambra governor was playing “ infantile and local politics.”

But responding in a statement by his Media Aide, Olivier Okpala, Obiano said Ojukwu lied against him, stressing that he had never talked to the late Igbo leader’s son since he joined the APC.

Obiano said he had nothing to gain if Ojukwu returned to APGA.

The statement partly reads, “It is a matter of pure pathetic fallacy for the younger Ikemba to say that Governor Obiano is lobbying him to come back to APGA.

“The governor wondered on what grounds anybody would ever lobby Ojukwu to return to APGA while he never held any important position to warrant being described as a stakeholder or a leader of the party when he was a member of APGA.

“In fact, nobody knew that he was a member of the party.”

Obiano described Ojukwu’s son as “a sad irony of his father” who “In his lifetime, was the champion of the struggle for the rights and emancipation of his people, standing firm with his Igbo brothers and sisters and never betraying their cause.”

Adding, “I wonder what the Great Ikemba would be thinking when his son openly denied the only political entity which he left to unite the Igbo under a political umbrella.

“It is unfortunate that Ojukwu’s son described an elder and the governor of his state as one playing juvenile and local politics when the late Ojukwu respected constituted authorities.

“We urge Ojukwu Jnr to show respect to the governor and continue his sojourn with the APC rather than make untrue remarks about the governor.”

Crime / Another Prison Escape Of Detainees In Yenegoa, Bayelsa State by Anstalk(f): 8:19am On Dec 02, 2017
Barely three weeks after 10 suspects escaped from police detention facilities in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State, another attempt was averted on Friday.

Mr Asuquo Amba, Bayelsa Police Commissioner, confirmed the attempted escape in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the incident occurred in daylight on Thursday when the suspects were taking their bath.

He explained that the suspects in the cell had overpowered the policeman who had come to open the burglar proof for them.

“What saved the day was the outer gate which was still under lock at the time of the attempted escape.

“The prompt alertness of other policemen in the area saved the situation.

“None of the suspects escaped but the fact of the matter is that we do not have proper detention facilities.’’

He explained that the police have a make-shift facility– an office with burglary proof.

“We were lucky to have averted this one but that does not mean that it will not happen again.

“The suspects can still plan another one, we desperately need to build proper detention facilities to hold suspects”, he said.

Mr Amba said the makeshift facilities were overstretched and that this could be attributed to the slow pace of justice dispensation in the state.

He said they had written to the state government about the matter, and also engaged the judiciary on the imperatives of expedited justice delivery.

“The dearth of facilities here is hampering our efforts at policing the state,” Amba said.

The police claimed 10 suspects on November 7, at the Special Anti- Robbery Squad facility in Yenagoa escaped, but police command succeeding in re-arresting three of them.

She had accepted to forget and forgive as I promised her that we will handle the case with ease.

Chris Unger, director of competitions at football’s world governing body, was forced to issue reassurances after revelations made by disgraced former president, Sepp Blatter.

Blatter last year claimed he had seen draws at European level, in which heated and cooled balls had been used to rig fixtures.

However, Unger, responding to a question during a behind-the-scenes tour of the World Cup draw venue in Moscow, insisted there was “no truth” to the rumours.

“They’re (the balls) all the same. They don’t feel any different, they don’t look any different, with the exception of the red balls, which are there for a purpose.

“It’s entirely random and by chance how the groups get formed at the end,” he added.

Business / Foreign Investors Buy Out Nigerian Shareholders In Seven-up by Anstalk(f): 6:53am On Dec 01, 2017
Seven-Up Bottling  Company Plc has received an offer from its majority shareholder, Affelka, a privately-owned Lebanese firm,  to buy out the minority shareholders for N19.33 billion ($60 million).

Seven-Up said in a notice to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, yesterday that Affelka has offered to buy all the outstanding and issued shares of Seven-Up that it does not currently own, amounting to 171.5 million ordinary shares at N112.70 per share.

The offer price, according to the company, represents 15 percent premium of N98.00 per share, the last traded price on August 9, 2017, being the last business date the proposal was received from Affelka and 18 percent premium on N95.50, its closing price at the close of trading yesterday.

In his reaction, Sunil Sawhney, Vice Chairman, Seven-Up Bottling Company, said: “As of now, we have received an offer from the majority shareholder of the company. It’s a financial restructuring,”

He said the company has been making losses for some time, adding that the deal is aimed at restructuring the company.

Sawhney, who joined the company in a management change this year, said delisting Seven-Up from the stock exchange after the takeover would be “logical”. The takeover is subject to shareholders’ and regulatory approvals, he said.

The company’s profit started to decline in the first three months of 2015 and then posted its first loss in half-year 2016 and since then losses have widened.

Politics / Kaduna Fires 4,042 LG Workers by Anstalk(f): 6:19pm On Nov 28, 2017
The Kaduna State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Jafaru Sani, on Tuesday, confirmed the disengagement of 4,042 local government staff across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Sani told a news conference in Kaduna that the exercise was part of the ongoing restructuring of the local government system for effective service delivery.

He also said that the restructuring was designed to strengthen the local government system to carry out developmental projects and programmes.

He said that 3,159 staff among those disengaged had put in 10 years and were retired while the remaining 893 had their jobs terminated.

He explained that the retired staff would be paid their November salary including three months’ salary in lieu of notice while their pension would be worked out by their pension administrators.

Sani added that those whose appointments were terminated would equally be paid their November salary, one month salary in lieu of notice and gratuity according to the civil service rule.

“It is a known fact that the LGAs were overburdened by redundant and unproductive staff who are contributing nothing to the development of the councils.

“Because of the over-bloated staff, the LGAs are doing nothing other than paying salaries and end up becoming more or less a poverty alleviation centres, where people just go to collect money and go home.

“To ensure development at the local levels, therefore, we have to do what is right by downsizing the redundant staff to free some funds that would be injected in developmental projects.

“With the disengagement, the supporting members of staff at the 23 LGAs are now 6,732, excluding primary school teachers and primary health care workers.

“I am sure, with this development, local government areas will soon start executing capital and development projects to provide social services to the people.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Commission, Mr Mahmud Zailani, explained that the ongoing local government restructuring was part of Gov. Nasir El-Rufai’s campaign promise to strengthen public service.

“The governor began his public service restructuring at the state level when he reduced the number of the state ministries from over 20 to 13.

“A number of permanent secretaries and other staff had to go during the process as part of efforts to provide quality public service.

“I say here that the disengagement was not forced on the LGAs but was carried out with their full support and each LGA was treated according to its peculiarities,’’ Zailani said.

Properties / Lagos: Night Fire Guts Shops In Gowon Estate by Anstalk(f): 7:19am On Nov 28, 2017
A late night fire early on Tuesday morning gutted five of eight shops attached to a Union Bank building on 411 Road Junction, Gowon Estate, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Egbeda.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inferno was noticed at the make- shift shops at about 11.20 pm, shortly after electricity supply was taken by the providers, Ikeja Electric.

However, many of the shop owners had closed and gone home as some of them do not reside in the estate but those resident salvaged some of their goods with the assistance of the youth.

NAN reports that the youth had brought down the fire before the arrival of the men of the Lagos State Fire Service from Agege.

Before their arrival which took about an hour, it was wailing and lamentations by the residents and sympathisers who urged the state government to install water hydrants and fire notices all over the estate.

They also lamented that some of the areas marked for the development of infrastructure for sports, fire service stations and recreation had been sold to individuals by the FHA.

“The areas meant for these purposes have been built up. The last is the Kuwait Field which used to house sports facilities, including football, basketball, tennis and others had been appropriated by land grabbers.

“It has now become a shopping complex cum estate within an estate.

“It is regrettable that the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government are not doing much to ensure that the youth have their future their own way,’’ a resident told NAN anonymously.

A resident of the Union Bank building, who does not want his name in print, told NAN that most of the shop owners did not live in the estate, adding that the cause of the raze has not been identified.

He commended the efforts of the residents, including the youth in containing the fire before the arrival of the men of the fire service who eventually quenched the raging fire.

One of the leaders in the estate, Alhaji Daud Oyebanji, also commended the youth for coming out en masse to contain the fire.

Oyebanji said that the youth ensured that there was no looting of the salvaged items from the burnt and unburnt shops.

Meanwhile, a dry cleaning shop, a mini-cold room as well as a provision shop run by an octogenarian had every item in them destroyed by the inferno.

The Fire Service Officer who led the rescue team, Mr Julius Adewuya, said: “We responded immediately we were called.

“The timing of the call was good because there was no traffic but we had hitches getting into the estate because of bad roads. The roads are near impassable but we managed to come for the rescue.

“Equally on arrival, we discovered that there were not enough notices for the people to know which service point is nearest to them to call.

“`We appeal to the residents of this estate to invite us to enlighten them on when and how they could get timely assistance from the fire service,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived after the fire had been put out but they also helped to ensure the fire was totally controlled.

Also mean of the Nigeria Police, Gowon Estate Division, were also on ground to provide security.

Politics / Atiku Left APC For One Reason – Festus Keyamo by Anstalk(f): 8:05am On Nov 25, 2017
Nigerian leading lawyer, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has revealed real reason former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar left the ruling party.

Keyamo who took a swipe at Atiku, wondered why the former Vice President could not be bold enough to tell Nigerians why he left APC.

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, yesterday resigned from the party with different reasons.

But Keyamo believes Nigerians already know that the ex-VP left because he had little chance of securing a ticket in the ruling APC with President Muhammadu Buhari likely to seek reelection in 2019.

The senior lawyer wrote on his twitter handle, @fkeyamo, “The starting point of Atiku’s Presidential bid would have been to simply admit he left APC in search of another party’s ticket.

“Nigerians know that already.

“It would have been more honourable than given some zigzag reasons to justify his zigzag movements across political parties.”
