Politics / Reps Member, Kurfi Escapes Lynching By Constituents Over ‘failed Promises by Anstalk(f): 11:04am On Nov 06, 2017
Member representing Dutsinma/Kurfi constituency in the House of Representatives, Danlami Mohammed Kurfi, narrowly escaped lynching by youths of his own constituency.

The constituents reportedly attacked him over unfulfilled promises he made.

The lawmaker confirmed the incident to Vanguard.

Kurfi explained that he was attacked by the youths because of job opportunities he distributed.

He said some felt it was lopsided and favoured a sect of religion against the other.

Kurfi described the attack as the handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on using religion to cause or ferment trouble.

His words: “The attack erupted after I gave out about 25 slots of the job offer (10 slots at Teachers Board and 15 slots at Federal University) and some disgruntled elements claimed the sharing did not favour the Darika area.

“Those who said these are not fair to me because as a lawmaker, everybody is mine irrespective of their sect. And so the matter that I favoured Izala sect and don’t favour the Darika does not arise.

“In the recent past, I built a Juma’at mosque for the Darika sect, bought an Islamic school for them worth about N1 million, so it is not true that the Darika sect are not favoured”.

He further said the offer was shared based on merit and across board with each wards getting a slot each while the main town got three slots.

Education / FGGC Langtang Security Guard Pimps Schoolgirls For N5,000 by Anstalk(f): 9:07am On Oct 30, 2017
With N5,000, or even less, one of the security guards employed to protect students at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Langtang, Plateau state, would gladly love-vendor the girls to strangers. Speaking to TheCable’s undercover reporter, the guard gave an insight into how he organises “runs” for the teenagers for a fee, and how this is a common practice.

This investigation by FEMI OWOLABI and SEYI AWOJULUGBE also exposes the rot in the once-prestigious Unity School, where students use water from an untreated well, sleep on broken beds, study in hostile classrooms — and live practically unprotected from predators.

You are in Langtang, Plateau state, for the weekend and need a schoolgirl for the evening? Someone is ready to help you make the arrangement for a fee. You can even have more than one girl if you choose. There are plenty of them at the nearby Federal Government Girls College (FGGC). The love-vendor is actually paid to protect the girls, but that is by the way.

Before TheCable set out for Langtang, the guard — whose phone number the reporter had collected from an acquaintance — consistently beat his chest and gave assurances that getting girls out of the hostel “is no big deal”, and it was soon obvious that the love-vendor had been in the business for a long time.

Bani Guest House, a popular lodge along the Langtang highway, is well known to the girls, the guard said. He explained that most of them do attend Sunday evening parties at Bani, where their boyfriends come to wait for them.

The reporter had disguised as a visiting businessman in need of girls to spend “a nice time” with. He promised to pay the guard more than what he would ask for. All the “big man” needed was a guarantee of a swell time. The excited guard called endlessly, excessively delighted with the business at hand.

TheCable ran into a little bad luck along the way — the timing of the visit coincided with when the SS3 girls were writing their exams in July 2017, and other classes were on vacation. But, not to worry, the guard was ready to pull the strings all the same.

Settling over a plate of rice ordered for him at the guest house, the guard told his would-be customer that girls in SS3 who were rounding off their final exams would make the perfect picks.

“I am giving you outgoing students,” he said, his face loosening into a smile. “There are some writing exams, it’s just to get a clue to know them and ask if they can do this for me. There are girls who do ‘runs’ but the issue is money.”

The guard, who was quick to request for money so he could move round and also “sort out” the girls’ transportation, revealed that there are a couple of schoolgirls who are into the act of sneaking out of the school premises.

“You’ll discuss how much you’ll give them,” he said, pocketing the N5,000 the reporter had given him as upfront for the task. “All those girls are small girls and they don’t know money much. If you treat them well, they will look for you if you’re still around.”

The guard had left his duty post. For hours, he was moving round the school, searching for girls who could be available under the tight deadline.

“I have arranged two girls now, and they will come to meet you when they are done with their exams today,” he would later say on phone.

You can listen to the conversation with the guard below.

Politics / Nigeria More Divided Now Than Ever Before - Atiku by Anstalk(f): 8:31am On Oct 30, 2017
As leaders and groups in Southern region continue the clamour for restructuring, Nigeria’s former vice-president, Mr Atiku Abubakar, at the weekend lamented the growing discontent and agitations in the country, saying there had never been a time that the country had been as divided as it is today.

Speaking while delivering a goodwill message at the Old Students’ Association of the Federal Government College, Okigwe in Imo State, he said though there was no full scale war in the country at the moment, he expressed regret over the level of inter-ethnic discontent, hatred, and hate speech, noting that it was worrisome.

Atiku, who is the grand patron of the school, said the celebration of its 40th anniversary came at a critical time in the country’s history, coinciding with the worsening spate of agitations all over the country.
He said: “All of you must be aware of the recent agitations from different parts of the country, with some groups threatening violence and, in some cases, secession.

“These agitations are the result of a number of factors, which I will notbother going into at this time, although since you are all enlightened men and women, I have no doubt that you are well and fully aware of what they are.

“As a result of these various forces, Nigeria of today appears more divided than it has ever been before.”

The former vice-president, who traced the origin of Federal Government Colleges popularly known as ‘Unity Schools’ to the end of the civil war, said the idea of setting up the schools was to foster national unity and cohesion.

He said that Nigeria’s best brains were trained at the unity schools not only to be academically sound, but to see themselves as Nigerians rather than as Igbo or Hausa or Yoruba or any other ethnic group.

He however lamented that such laudable virtues were fast being eroded with the present state of affairs in the country.

http://anstalk.com/nigeria-divided-now-ever-atiku/

“Our country is not at war in the sense of guns and bombs, but the level of inter-ethnic discontent, hatred, and hate speech is at an all-time high,” he said.

Atiku told the students and alumni of the Federal Government College, Okigwe, that Nigeria needed them now more than ever.

He said: “The glory of what was begun here 40 years ago must not be allowed to die. It must be propagated throughout all our country. That is a responsibility that you must all meditate on as you celebrate with one another over the next few days of this grand occasion.

“That is also the responsibility that you must carry on your shoulders as you depart to your various locations across the globe. Whether locally or from the diaspora, you must each and every one of you see yourselves as entrusted with a critical role in mending the cracks that hate and divisions have marked in the social and political life of our great country, Nigeria.

“This is the time to lace your boots. This is the time to roll up your sleeves. This is the time to give back. Nigeria once gave you her best and it is time for Federal Government College, Okigwe, to give her best back to Nigeria.”

Sports / Lukaku Versus Kane: Manchester United And Tottenham Meet At Old Trafford On Sat by Anstalk(f): 8:19am On Oct 27, 2017
The Premier League weekend gets underway at Old Trafford on Saturday as Manchester United host in-form Tottenham.

With United and Spurs are locked on 20 points, and sat second and third in the league respectively, both sides have the chance to bridge the gap to leaders Manchester City with a victory.

The game throws up a number of interesting contests, with this season's in-form strikers - Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane - going head to head on the pitch, while Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino do battle off it.

Lukaku versus Kane

Lukaku is a No 9 I wouldn't like to play against. He's quicker than you, can outmuscle you and he's a big powerful man capable of scoring all sorts of goal. I think Lukaku is the better No 9 because he'll go up and play against the centre halves and be happy to do that, whereas Kane drifts around a bit more and plays in areas that are difficult to pick up. Lukaku has been asked to occupy the centre-backs and stretch the game, and is the more out-and-out No 9.

Pochettino has the one outstanding English player at the moment. He scores goals for fun, 17 in 16 games to be exact. You dream about getting a managerial job and having Kane come through. He's a player that keeps you in the job because you don't have to play fantastic football at all times with him in your team.

Health / Indian Surgeons Separate Twins Joined At The Head (Photos) by Anstalk(f): 7:22am On Oct 27, 2017
Surgeons in the Indian capital, Delhi, have separated twin boys who were conjoined at the tops of their heads.

Two-year-old Jaga and Kalia underwent 16 hours of surgery, and are now in the intensive care unit, doctors said.

A team of 30 doctors carried out the surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The boys were born with shared blood vessels and brain tissues, a very rare condition that occurs once in about three million births.

The director of the hospital Randeep Guleria told the Press Trust of India that the "next 18 days would be extremely critical to ascertain the success of the surgery".

The twins, hailing from a village in eastern Orissa state, were joined at the head - a condition known as craniopagus.

Even before the operation they had defeated the odds; craniopagus occurs in one in three million births, and 50% of those affected die within 24 hours, doctors say.

Both the children have other health issues as well. While Jaga has heart issues, Kalia has kidney problems," neurosurgeon A K Mahapatra said.

"Though initially Jaga was healthier, now his condition has deteriorated. Kalia is better," he added.

Doctors said the most challenging job after the separation was to "provide a skin cover on both sides of the brain for the children as the surgery had left large holes on their heads".

"If the twin make it, the next step will be reconstructing their skulls," plastic surgeon Maneesh Singhal said.

The first surgery was performed on 28 August when the doctors created a bypass to separate the shared veins that return blood to the heart from the brain.

Chelsea will host AFC Bournemouth according to the quarter final draw for the Carabao Cup, in a match to be played at Stamford Bridge, the week commencing 18 December.

Coincidentally, Chelsea will also be hosting Bournemouth in the English premier League this weekend.

The London club last met Bournemouth in the League Cup in 1994/95, winning a second round tie 2-0 on aggregate.

In the other draws, Championship club, Bristol City have a mountain to climb as they would face Manchester United.

Arsenal will face West Ham, while Leicester City will host Manchester City.

The much expected draw today, was done late following technical problems experienced for two hours in a failed attempt to broadcast on Twitter.

The draw was intended to be shown live at 16:00 BST.

However, after four announcements explaining the delay, it was finally shown as a pre-recorded video, the BBC reported.

A statement from the EFL read: “The EFL has received an apology from Twitter UK for the delay which is believed to have occurred as a result of a faulty encoder.

“The EFL has requested a full explanation into the events that led to this afternoon’s unacceptable delay.”

A Twitter spokesman said: “We’re sorry for the issues that led to the delay of today’s round five draw. We would also like to apologise to the thousands of supporters who had been patiently awaiting news of who their team would be playing.”

Politics / $5.5bn Loan: Nigeria Not In Huge Debt, Says Adeosun by Anstalk(f): 12:35pm On Oct 26, 2017
Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, on Thursday, explained the rationale behind the Federal Government’s decision to borrow $5.5billion.

Amid concerns raised by Nigerians about the nation’s foreign debt profile, Adeosun, who appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, said: “we are not in a huge amount of debt.”

The minister’s statement comes more than two weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari wrote to the National Assembly, seeking the approval for $5.5bn external loans to finance the 2017 Appropriation Act.

She, however, maintained that the country’s debt profile stands low when compared to developed nations.

“Nigeria’s borrowings are actually low relative to the size of our GDP; it is one of the areas where we are doing very well. We have a debt GDP of 17 percent; Ghana is 68, South Africa is about 52, most developed countries are about 50.

“The threshold for a developing economy is 40; we are 17, Britain is 89, America is over a hundred. Even Germany which is probably the most conservative borrowing country in Europe is 68. So we are not in the huge amount of debt,” the minister said.

On the controversy trailing the proposed loan, She said, “Out of that $5.5bn, $2.5bn is for the 2017 budget, $3bn is simply to refinance money that we already owe. We inherited a lot of treasury bills; so every 90 days, those bills mature and we have to pay interest on them.

“So what we want to do is to take $3bn and then as the treasury bills mature, we will refinance from naira into dollar,” she added.

Politics / You Lack Moral Authority To Attack Buhari by Anstalk(f): 6:39am On Oct 26, 2017
The federal government of Nigeria on Wednesday insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has no moral right to level any accusations against President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over Abdulrasheed Maina.

In a statement released to the media on Wednesday, Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity (SSA Media), described Maina as one of the monsters created by the former PDP government, and who were still rearing their ugly heads long after the Party was soundly defeated in the 2015 elections.

“Over and over again, the President Buhari government has pointed out that the administration’s greatest problem is the mess left behind by the previous government. Maina is just one more example,” he said.

“Top officials in the PDP government, from sectoral heads, to those charged with responsibility for law and order received some of these billions of naira from Maina.

“We have all the transaction records and these are matters that the EFCC has been pursuing to ensure that they all have their day in court,”‎ he added.

Malam Shehu hinted that some influential officials loyal to the previous government may have been the invisible hand in the latest scandal that saw the return of Maina to the public service, despite being on the EFCC’s wanted list.

He, however, assured Nigerians that President Buhari was determined to get to the bottom of the matter of the impunity that led to Maina’s reinstatement.

“Everything will be uncovered in due course,” he said.

“This just goes to show us the scale of corruption that this government is fighting. And, as we can all see, corruption keeps fighting back viciously,” he added.

Education / Kogi Bans Unions In Higher Educational Institutions by Anstalk(f): 4:48am On Oct 26, 2017
Bogged by activities of unions over non-payment of salaries, Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has banned activities of Joint Action Committee (JAC) of trade unions and trade unionism in state-owned tertiary institutions.

Bello announced the ban in a broadcast in Lokoja on Wednesday.

He accused trade unionism in tertiary institutions of impeding government holistic reforms.

Others are the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) and The Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN).

The governor said his administration had made tremendous progress in resolving all issues relating to adequacy and frequency of remuneration for all categories of Civil Servants in the State.

He reiterated his respect for the rights of labour unions in relations to the responsibilities of the owners and proprietors of tertiary academic institutions.

Bello, however, regretted that the state-owned tertiary institutions’ trade unionism had let itself to impeding government’s efforts to carry out “holistic reforms in the civil service through its unjustified industrial actions.

“The branch of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has proceeded on yet another strike for alleged non-payment of salaries and emoluments irrespective of clear evidence of government’s good faith and efforts contradicting JAC’s position,” he said.

The governor said there was evidence of massive embezzlement at Kogi State Polytechnic’s earnings in excess of N157m committed under JAC’s nose.

Bello assured that his government remained committed to meeting its obligations to all genuine employees of the state as promptly as available resources would permit.

“Government will work to ensure uninterrupted academic calendar, henceforth, in all basic education, secondary and tertiary academic institutions in Kogi State.

Food / Price Of Garri Drops Drastically In Enugu by Anstalk(f): 10:14am On Oct 25, 2017
Price of garri, a staple in the country, has dropped by more than 60 percent in Enugu within four months.

A correspondent, who conducted a market survey on the staple on Monday, observed that the price has gone down from as high as N1, 250 to between N450 and N500 per paint bucket.

The paint bucket of four-litre is usually the standard measure for cereals in South East. Many buyers, who came to purchase the staple in markets in Enugu, said they were happy as they could get white garri for N450 and yellow garri for N500.

A buyer said that they prayed the price could crash further, while another said it should continue at its current price.

The traders attributed the price crash to the current bumper harvest of cassava after many Nigerians had yielded the call to return to the farm.

A garri seller at Garki Market, Mrs Obioma Ukoh, said that many people went into cassava farming since last year and for that its price had drastically dropped

Crime / Minister Of Whatsapp By Zimbabwe Govt by Anstalk(f): 9:28am On Oct 25, 2017
A spoof government notice hit social media as soon as President Robert Mugabe announced he had set up a new ministry responsible for Cyber Security, Threat Detection and Mitigation. Zimbabweans reacted with customary humour to the letter, which faked the signature and letterhead of the newly appointed cyber minister – Patrick Chinamasa – and instructed all WhatsApp group members to register with the ministry by November. The letter was signed "By The Cyber Powers Vested In Me".

But the jokes have since subsided, and Zimbabweans are now considering what the new ministry will mean for their civil liberties – especially freedom of speech. President Robert Mugabe’s spokesperson, George Charamba, says Mr Mugabe came up with the idea of a new ministry to deal with an "emerging threat to the state… a threat founded on abuse and unlawful conduct".

But others say the government’s stance is a threat to civil liberties. One communications rights group, the Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (Misa), says this new scrutiny of social media goes against the spirit of the constitution and freedom of expression. "These unfortunate threats have resulted in self-censorship by [individuals] when engaging on topical issues affecting the country," it said in a statement.

Politics / Anambra Governorship: APC Accuses APGA Of Turning Fracas Into Propaganda by Anstalk(f): 7:28am On Oct 23, 2017
Nnewi—The All Progressives Congress, APC, Campaign Council for the November 18 Anambra governorship election has blasted the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, over insinuations of a fracas on the sideline of last weekend’s APC campaign flag off.

Citing Police reports, which said the fracas was not politically related, the APC campaign council said it was regrettable that the APGA-led government would use such an incident that led to loss of lives for propaganda.

http://anstalk.com/3074-2/

The Campaign Council equally commended Ndi Anambra for their turnout, saying the party and its candidate have become the platform to change the maladministration in the state.

The campaign council also thanked the presidency, APC governors and the party leadership for putting up a strong showing at the flag-off.

Chairman, Media Sub-Committee of the council, Mr. Nonso Madu, who noted the release from Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, ASP Nkeiruka Nwode, said nothing untoward was recorded during the entire duration of the flag off.

He said: “We were shocked to hear that there was fracas during the flag off. We can tell you on good authority that there was no iota of truth in such rumour. APC had a very peaceful flag off campaign and we challenge anybody in doubt to investigate.

“However, for those still in doubt, the statement from the Anambra Police Command settled it.”

The incident

According to the statement, the incident involving the Police and a driver happened far away from the venue of the flag off. And it even happened after the campaign event had ended.

“Linking the incident with APC flag off must be a campaign of calumny from political opponents that were stunned by the crowd at the venue of the flag off.

“We make bold to say that in the history of political campaigns ahead of next month’s governorship election, no party recorded the large crowd that graced the APC flag off.

“We were quick to notice the hand of agents of the state government in pushing the narrative linking our rally to the fracas. We were not surprised because it is the same government that has pushed the fiction of exporting yams, vegetables without making any genuine efforts in impacting the agricultural sector.

“The government would use anything, including the death of Ndi Anambra, to push its propaganda. The turnout was unprecedented. The crowd point to the fact that Ndi Anambra have accepted the APC. They want to be connected to the centre instead of being in opposition.

“We urge them to continue with such spirit until Tony Nwoye wrestles power from the incumbent.”

Education / Nigerian Law School Remain The Most Organised Educational Institute In Nigeria. by Anstalk(f): 9:04pm On Oct 21, 2017
NIGERIAN LAW SCHOOL REMAIN THE MOST ORGANISED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE IN NIGERIA.

#NLSResultAnalysis

Why I love NLS is that they are 1st to none and accurate in giving a clear analysis of results.

In Nigerian Law School, there is nothing like paper leaking because the exam is set by the council led by DG on the day of your paper, it simply means that you don't know what will come out even 30mins to you taking the exams.

In Nigerian Law School, their yes is their yes and their no is their no. They don't succumb to fallacious argument that has no position of the law..

Till tomorrow I still respect this institution until otherwise or any changes.

Meanwhile Lagos Campus congratulations to you people for winning the trophy this year.

NLS is superb.

Congrats to the new wigs and welcome to the Bar!
