ENDSARS: HOW GOVERNOR YAHAYA BELLO INTELLIGENTLY ENSURED KOGI REMAIN PEACEFUL On the 10th of October, 2020, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello shunned politics, embraced diplomacy and joined Nigerian/ Kogi State youths in the peaceful demonstrations in stopping police brutality. He became the first Governor in Nigeria to join the campaign; a true and representing youth. "Be assured of my continued support as well as my willingness to remain an ombudsman towards a peaceful and law abiding resolution to matters arising in this regard". He told Kogi youths in his first live broadcast. The 14th of October, 2020, became another history making day in Kogi State as protesters marched towards the Kogi State Government House in Lokoja. Young and agitated youths requested the audience of the Governor. The State Governor who was engrossed in a state Executive Council meeting immediately cleared his schedule and attended to their request. The Governor declared his support for their agitations giving well articulated explanations. He welcomed and entertained protesters at the Government House! The state Governor then called on protesters to follow him to a project commissioning the same day! In the words of the Governor, "You have won the war, don't lose the battle". That is a Governor who knows how to apply the principle of pause and play in managing crises. On the 19th of October, 2020, following increased agitations and the imminent hijack of protest by hoodlums across the nation, the state Governor made an urgent fifth broadcast addressing youths and protesters. Yahaya Bello volunteered to lead the movement. He volunteered to bear the risks, front his fellow youths and take up their course. If the protest had a leader, would he instruct them to raise down a police station? No one can fight a battle without a King. Even the Apartheid had a leader, Nelson Mandela. Instead, it became a topic for media propagandists. Just few hours after this, behold, a curfew. From another intelligent report, these protests were predicted over three months ago by the BBC; a result of unsolicited lockdown in Africa due to Corona Virus. The Governor of Kogi State was amongst the earliest leaders to adopt an intelligent strategy in handling the economic impacts of the pandemic. "If basic livelihoods cannot be sustained, people will prefer the loitery of infection over the certainty of starvation". The words of Governor Yahaya Bello while adopting a smart and economic friendly approach to fight the pandemic. Nigeria was listed amongst the highest risk countries likely to face a protest storm as a result of the economic impact of the virus. On this note, the Executive Governor of Kogi State partially locked down the state while allowing economic activities and businesses to go on. The protests emanating and crippling the country today is to a very large extent a product of the grievances from continuous lockdown taken on the Government of Nigeria. The economic hardships have pushed people beyond reasonable levels. It will interest you to know that a large proportion of the perpetrators of these protests are students who have been consistently kept at home for several months. The peace reigning in Kogi state amidst widespread protests across the country is also a result of the Intelligent approach of the Governor in handling the pandemic and the recent crises. As it stands, schools in Kogi State including higher institutions have all reopened, and students are actively engaged in academic activities. Which actively engaged Nigerian student will have time to raze down public buildings? This is another smart angle to look from. This wise decision of Governor Yahaya Bello seven months ago has kept the state intact amidst a nationwide distortion. Nothing works more than identifying with the people and making them know you are part of their struggle. It sets the stage for effective persuasion and compliance. Kogites remain thankful for their Governor for keeping the state secured and peaceful in this very critical year. He added that the newly inaugurated tractors would compliment the recently initiated cluster Farming Model under the Kogi State APPEALS programs thereby ensuring maximum use of resources provided for under the scheme. On the educational materials, he pointed out that the state remained committed to providing modern educational facilities in a bid to improve the standard of education in the State. On behalf of the Kogi State Traditional Council the Ohimege igu of Koto Karfe, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Isakoto said that traditional rulers were captivated by the assemblage of the tractors which would be distributed to farmers across the 21 Local Government Areas. KOGI GOVERNOR REACTS TO PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST FSARS BRUTALITY Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on Saturday expressed support for peaceful protests against the brutality by some personnel of the FSARS against citizens, especially youths. Bello, in his message to Nigerian youths on the protests, described seeking an end to the brutal conduct against citizens by FSARS, other police units and the personnel of all security agencies as a worthy cause that must be supported by all. He, however, implored the youth against violent confrontations with the police under any form or guise, whether during these protests or in any other circumstance. "Taking the law into your hands is unwise, dangerous to the perpetrators and counter-productive to all desired outcomes. We will continue to work toward a new direction in the affairs of Nigeria in which all citizens can maximise the benefits of nationhood, including freedom from arbitrariness by agents of government," he said. He said as the governor and Chief Security Officer of Kogi State, he had had cause in the past to order the arrest and prosecution of security officers whose misconduct and brutality led to injury and/or death of innocent citizens in the state. "This is because I believe in the synergy between law and order and due process as safeguards for the absolute rights of citizens to decent treatment at all stages of encounter with law enforcement. "On the flip side, I have also worked to improve general welfare for all security personnel and formations operating in Kogi State - in cash and in kind, rewarded outstanding service by officers and stoutly defended those falsely accused or unfairly victimised. This is because I believe there is a link between an officer's job satisfaction and the value he or she has for the job. This, in turn, determines how a security personnel reacts to citizens while carrying out official duties. "We also work as actively as possible to foster mutual respect between law enforcement and our citizens in every policing situation bearing in mind that cooperation always works better than conflict," he said. Bello noted that a small percentage of security officers persist in unprofessional conduct which has tainted the image of the police and government when citizens rate them as corrupt on the basis of unsavoury experiences on our roads and elsewhere cannot be denied. "While I cannot immediately recall any incident of it, I wish to apologise as a leader for any error of omission or commission under my watch which has led to unlawful experiences in police custody by any citizen." He said in solidarity with this cause, I would engage with some of his colleagues, the police hierarchy and the leadership of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission on how to further facilitate progress on the order by President Muhammadu Buhari, since July 2019, for implementation of the Report of the Presidential Panel on the Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Governor Bello said his administration had just established the Office of the Public Defender and Citizens’ Rights Commission (PDCRC). He directed the immediate setting up of a Human Rights Special Intervention Group (HRSIG) under the PDCRC to receive and rapidly resolve complaints of brutality by law enforcement (illegal arrest, detention, among others) against any citizen in Kogi State and any Kogite anywhere in Nigeria. YAHAYA BELLO AND THE SUGARCANE WOMAN Being diligent in whatever you do has an inevitable reward, no matter how long it takes, the reward will always meet you. The lady in picture got her reward of diligence even in the face of wants and deprivation when the governor of Kogi, Alhaji Yahaya Bello became the messenger that was sent in delivery of this woman's reward. He was driving on the street of Abuja and had his eyes rested on this woman with a tray of Sugarcane on her head, with a baby strapped to her back and mercilessly drenched by heavy rain. The governor couldn't contain the sight as he ordered his driver to a stop, chatted with the toiling woman whose heart-wrenching story melted the governor's heart and in no time, he had taken the immediate responsibility of the woman. He personally had her driven to his house where he handed her to his wife and asked that she be rehabilitated and empowered and the empowerment came instantly. Mrs Theresa’s husband; a construction worker lost his job as a result of COVID-19 harsh economy, her departmental store business collapsed and there was nothing to fall back to feed the family of five and she resorted to hawking Sugarcane. She lives in Karshi suburb of Abuja but trades her sugarcane in the metropolis. Here is the lesson, had the woman defied the rains not to hawk her ware, this luck would have eluded her, had the governor not looked her direction or better still look away, there won't have been this story to tell. This unofficial story tells one of the miseries of life that our helpers may be people we never knew in our lives and also a revelation of God’s omnipresence . A woman whose daily target was to returning home with something to eat but returned yesterday with business capital in her hands and other basic needs, , that is how God works in our lives. In the pool of her own tears of Joy, she could only offer this prayer for the Governor “thank you for changing my life. God will never leave your back and you will never know shame in your life”. The hard truth is the undeniable reality that when the time of your reward has come, God will always manifest his greatness. For this woman Theresa, her message of fortune came eventually from God using his Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the messenger of hope. https://thenigerianpost.com.ng/2020/09/16/the-sugarcane-woman-and-yahaya-bello/

ANSU/COOU Resumes school for all First years & Clinical students. Others to follow in a month when these set have taken their exams. Recall that Anambra state Governor was the first to relax Lockdown restrictions & open markets, churches, etc earlier in May. We hope that other schools would follow soon, although ASUU is the main bone of contention but ANSU has as of today, decamped.. Expect divisions in ASUU soon.
