Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State, has denied being at logger heads with President Muhammadu Buhari. Okorocha said the absence of the president at his 55th birthday celebration last month was not an indication that there is a rift between them. The governor, a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has on several occasions been linked with vying for the presidential ticket of the party. But addressing journalists at the State’s Government House in Owerri, the state capital, yesterday, Okorocha maintained that his relationship with the president remains cordial and wonderful. Okorocha insisted that he is not among the people who change colours every second, or always sitting on the fence. He said, “I have a very cordial and wonderful relationship with President Buhari. Sincerely speaking I believe in him. “The President had delegated the Vice-President to come for that occasion and his advanced team had already arrived when other national assignment came up and he had to travel out of the country. “It is not true that I am having a problem with President Buhari. I am not among the people who change colours every second or always sitting on the fence. “If I don’t support Buhari I will shout it loud and clear where the world will hear me and I will make my reasons known to him. If I am with you, I am with you and if I am not with you, I am not with you.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/buhari-okorocha-denies-having-problems-with-the-president/ |
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has said that seven suspected pox cases have been recorded in four FCT Hospitals with samples of six victims taken and sent to Senegal for test and confirmation. Briefing newsmen on the incident in Abuja yesterday, the secretary, FCTA Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), Amanda Pam, said the “three suspected cases were recorded in National Hospital, two in Gwarinpa General Hospital, one each in University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada and Nyanya General Hospital.” “Though we have some suspected cases, but samples were collected and sent to the lab. So we are waiting for the results but from all indications, it is not monkey pox. “But I think I like the suspicion because it’s better to suspect than to ignore it and it later turns out to be positive. The truth now is that there is no confirmed case of monkey pox disease in FCT,” she stressed. Explaining further, the acting director, Public Health FCT, Humphrey Okoroukwu, disclosed that surveillance officers from the Public Health Department of the FCTA are being deployed to the 62 wards of the territory, as a precautionary measure against threatening health issues. Recall that the federal government through Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC), had on Monday, confirmed suspected outbreak of monkey pox in seven states in Nigeria – Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross River states. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has frowned at the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). TETFund said it has since 2016 increased funding for tertiary institutions in Nigeria by threefold to enable the institutions become world class in standard and to improve their global ranking. He noted that the ongoing strike was unnecessary and uncalled for. The executive secretary of the Fund, Dr Abdullahi Baffa, who stated this yesterday during a sensitisation workshop at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) headquarters in Abuja. Baffa said, “There is no need for the strike because based on the sharing formulae enshrined in section 7(3) of the TETFund Act, the distribution of funds are in the ratio of 2:1:1 as between universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. “Therefore, for the 2016 interventions, universities received N1.009 billion, Polytechnics N 691.63 million and Colleges of Education N679 million as opposed to universities N337 million, polytechnics N250 million and Colleges of Education N227 million in 2015”. According to Baffa, TETFund recently embarked on an access clinic and project proposal defence by beneficiary institutions, which was aimed at discussing, diagnosing and resolving all the difficulties impeding access to Fund’s interventions. “It was observed that most of the institutions were not conversant with our guidelines or aware of the existence of some of our intervention lines, thereby leading to poor access to our intervention funds”, he said. He noted that TETFund has success in its areas of mandate through the provision and improvement of the physical infrastructure in all its 202 benefiting institutions from 2011 to date as its jets litter all the campuses of Nigerian’s public tertiary institutions. He said, “In 2011, the Fund launched the National Research Fund (NRF) with a seed fund of N3billion to support cutting edge research in areas of critical national need and development. So far, a total of N1.7billion has been accessed by lecturers to finance their research activities. “TETFund also allocates funds on annual basis to institutions for their Institution-Based Research (IBR) for research projects that are not more than N2 million per project. “Remarkable progress has been made in the area of academic staff training and development. As at May 207, a total of 17, 482 have been sponsored by TETFund for Masters and Ph.D courses in top ranked universities both in Nigeria and overseas”. Two members of staff of the Nassarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, have been suspended for allegedly diverting tuition for private use. The Rector of the institution, Dr. Silas Gyar, made this known yesterday when the state Commissioner for Education, Ahmed Aliyu-Tijjani, paid a visit to the institution. He said, “The institution, in a move to curb indiscipline and misconduct, has suspended two members of staff accused of diverting school fees.” Noting that investigation by a committee headed by the chairman of the Governing Council of the polytechnic, Dauda Ishaku, was still ongoing, he added that “four other staff members were suspended and later reinstated pending the final report of the committee.” While calling on the state government and philanthropists to support the institution, Gyar listed the challenges of the school to include the non-accreditation of some of its courses, obsolete equipment as well as shortage of manpower and infrastructure. He also appealed to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to allow the school access to the special intervention fund for development. Aliyu-Tijjani, in his remark, assured the rector that the government would continue to invest in the education sector and provide facilities for institutions of learning. While calling for a special intervention fund for the institution, the commissioner added that the government would assist the school by providing an engineering laboratory. As the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its third week, ASUU has declared that it is only the Federal Government that can end the ongoing industrial action. ASUU maintained that what is happening in the nations universities is a mockery of global standards of university education. ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, while featuring on a because TV program (AM120) and monitored by DAILY POST on Monday in Ibadan maintained that the federal government can end the strike if it implements the agreement it reached with the union. He asked Federal government to use public funds to fund public education. Omole who noted that ASUU has never run away from negotiation stated that the issue in connection with the strike is about implementation and not negotiation as being peddled by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige. He said it was sad that successive government including the incumbent failed to realise that funding education is an investment which can bring about enduring positive change in Nigeria. Omole said that the union will continue to fight to force the federal government to wake up to her responsibilities of investing in education. He said ASUU is not making new demands but demanding implementation of the 2009 agreement and 2013 Memorandum of Understanding. “When you reached agreement you must implement it. They just finished Ileya festival and why are we celebrating? It was because someone promised to sacrifice his son to God. when he decided to fulfill it, God replaced that with ram and that is why we are celebrating. “Jesus Christ also promised to come and die for the sin of the world and he came and fulfill that promise and that is why you still have people who believe in his second coming. Why will government not fulfill their promises contained in signed agreements? “That is what brings crisis. Government should see education as investment. The products will come out to change society. University is to develop ideas to change society. What we are doing in the universities is a mockery of university education. “Government should pump in money so that we can solve Nigeria’s problems here in Nigeria. If our universities are properly funded, we can conduct cutting edge researches that can take us out of the recession. “What we are simply saying is the federal government should use public funds to fund public education. Chris Ngige is naive. He should check his records and see if there are new demands in his file. University lecturers and students are not the one who created recession. “The ruling class through their activities plunged Nigeria into recession crisis. Government should stop establishing new universities if they cannot fund existing ones. Universities are not constituency project.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/09/ASUU-its-only-fg-that-can-end-the-ongoing-strike-union/ |

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, UniAbuja branch, on Thursday declared that there was ‘no going back’ on the ongoing strike. Chairman of the branch, Dr Ben Ugheoke, on Thursday in Abuja told newsmen that the union had monitored activities at the campus and noticed compliance. “The NEC of ASUU held its meeting on August 12 and came up with the resolution that all branches proceed on a nationwide total comprehensive indefinite strike to press for all the issues that have been on the table,” he said. “In that meeting, there were also some decisions that were reached; for instance, we were given a window between Monday and Wednesday for all branches to domesticate the strike. “We, UniAbuja-ASUU, held a congress on Wednesday to comply with the directive of NEC; the declared strike is total, comprehensive and indefinite. “We have gone on monitoring at the two campuses and everybody is complying; we have our internal disciplinary measure that would be activated against any erring member.” He warned that no member of the union should engage in any form of teaching, or statutory meeting – departmental/faculty board, Senate, congregation or council. The West African Examination Council, WAEC, says it is not in charge of marking results after examinations. WAEC said this while dismissing insinuations that it deliberately fail candidates in either the school or private candidates’ examinations so they can reapply to enable the council make more money. Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Olu Adenipekun, told Daily Sun, that it was never the fault of the Council when candidates could not do well in its examinations. He said, “It is a wrong assumption that the council deliberately fails candidates. We don’t fail candidates. The scores they obtain reflect their performance. It is what the candidates’ score that we grade. “We don’t prepare candidates for examination; it is the responsibility of schools. “WAEC only assesses them based on prescribed textbooks which they are expected to be taught in schools. “Our examinations and grading of results are of international standards. “Let me tell you that examiners and markers are not WAEC staff. “The bulk of them are from the school system. The marking exercise goes through a tight process. “We don’t predetermine students’ scores. We grade them according to what they have written and in line with the international marking scheme.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/07/2017-mayjune-wassce-waec-denies-deliberately-failing-candidates/ |
With the last batch of 85,000 candidates rescheduled for JAMB examination this year’s exercise came to an eventful and highly impactful conclusion. The successful JAMB outing under a new helmsman and management is a pointer to the pivotal effect of strategic deployment of human resources on the performance level of institutions. For a change, we saw a JAMB that was more proactive and responsive. The familiar challenges were adequately anticipated and contained with pre-emptive measures while the random encounters with unforeseen circumstances got nipped in the bud effectively. To me, the most unique and profound impact of this year’s JAMB outing goes beyond the remarkable improvement in the management of the most crucial national examinations of candidates for our tertiary institutions already widely acclaimed. For the first time, JAMB was also able to conduct a forensic examination of the underlying factors responsible for turning the annual academic exercise into a seemingly unwinnable war against the hydra-headed malpractices of the candidates that eroded the credibility of the process and lowered the esteem of authenticity of our educational credentials. The regular references to some of the episodes as they were encountered during the exam period by its “street wise” academician-cleric-social scientist Chief Executive, Professor Ishaq Oloyede with his unsparing candour, spotlighted the bigger picture of parental, stakeholder and social dimensions in what had been seen only as the result of dishonesty of candidates and incompetence of JAMB. However, this initiative was of secondary concern to the JAMB chief who never took his eyes off the exam ball. Even as it was dubiously dribbled round the axis of sabotage and criminality to counter his corrective crusade in an exercise that involved 140 examination towns, 642 Computer-Based Test Centres, 7,000 invigilators and monitors and 1,722,236 candidates, the professor persisted. The compilation of statistical data on a range of devious devices deployed but detected before they could hit JAMB speaks of effective defense measures : As many as 1,386 candidates all identified and documented were found guilty of impersonation, possession of prepared answer scripts, smuggling of foreign materials, possession of electronic gadgets including telephone, copying and spying from foreign materials, unruly behaviour, collusion and multiple registration and examinations. An incriminating cache of tools of exam cheats was also seized including shirts, slippers, belts, handkerchiefs among others. The casualties included 57,646 centre-induced malpractice results cancelled, 72 centres in 18 states delisted or suspended, over 696 candidates engaged in double or triple registration and 666 cases of candidates sitting for examination more than once disqualified and a criminal gang involving persons who deceived candidates into believing that they had access to UTME examination questions. Among the deplorable tales of the unexpected activities reported include Computer-Based Test Centres who collected gate fees as high as N20,000, recruited thugs, deliberately created technical problems to assist candidates to cheat such as disabling CCTVs installed by JAMB, ran secret rooms where ghost candidates wrote the examination and colluded with candidates and parents to compromise the examination. A mother made a murky mark by offering an examiner payment in kind to help her child to pass and an invigilator was caught in a pass-for-sex escapade. The report of the forensic examination was just as unsettling by closing -in on the contentious and confusing concept of Nigerian Factor with conclusive authenticity. The significance of this year’s 1.7 million examined candidates -highest in 40 years-is reduced to a tragedy of numbers after JAMB declares deadpan that 1.7m is not news-though it hit the headlines- but the fact that more than 50% of the candidates who presented did not even have the pre-requisite qualifications -which went unreported-! That must also be confirmation of an editorial strain of the Nigerian Factor! But the leadership strain maintained its toxicity of ineptitude with JAMB finding that again, more than a decade after policy adjustment, over 70% of all candidates applied for courses in the Arts and Social Sciences, sharply deviating from national manpower development targets for 70 % READ MORE @ www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/07/jamb-2017-examining-nigeria/ |
The National Examination Council (NECO ) has said 1,283,485 candidates committed examination malpractice during the Senior School Certificate Examination from 2010 to 2016. A total of 7,410,030 candidates sat for NECO examinations during the same period. The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, said this in Abuja, on Thursday, during an event organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission. Uwakwe, who was represented by Dr. Ikechukwu Anyanwu, disclosed that 2010 had the highest number of exam malpractice cases, with 577,139 recorded while the lowest was in 2014 with a total of 34,744. “Recently, we realised that some of these supervisors allow phones and they are used in taking pictures of question papers and then the candidates send the pictures straight to websites and before you say ‘Jack Robson’, the website would have solved the questions and then they return the answers to them. “All that is needed to write the NECO exam is N11,350 but many schools charge between N30,000 and N50,000. What do you do with the rest of the money? They call it administrative fee and all kinds of things and yet we get N11,350. “You go to schools during an examination and the principal will insist that those who haven’t paid school fees will not write exams unless they pay and we insist that we have no contractual agreement with schools,” he said. The National Examination Council (NECO) has warned unsuspecting members of the public, not to faill for a syndicate claiming to recruit staff for the council. NECO’s head of information, Azeez Sani, in a statement released on Monday, revealed that job seekers have besieged their head office with applications, following the online publication. “NECO is not recruiting, since the present Registrar/Chief Executive Office assumed duty last August, no single employment has been made. “The council warns strongly that the publication is the imagination of fraudsters and states emphatically that it has not recruited, is not recruiting and has no immediate plan to recruit,” Sani said. Stakeholders in education in Lagos have called for the construction of military and police barracks between Ikorodu and Epe to check activities of kidnappers in the areas. They made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos. The stakeholders said the call became necessary in view of the increasing rate of criminal activities in the areas. A parent, Mrs Joan Peters, said that the bushes along the road to Epe from Ikorodu served as shield for kidnappers and their cohorts to carry out their ungodly activities on innocent people. She, however, expressed optimism that the presence of barracks between the two areas would force criminals to abandon the areas. “I believe that criminal activities are on the rise here because the perpetrators have hiding places inside the thickets that they know will not make their arrest easy,’’ she said. Thickets are groups of bushes or small tress that grow close together. “These criminal minds have many ways to escape arrest through the bushes. “They know that the security agents cannot pursue them to their hideouts, because the security agents don’t have knowledge of the terrain,’’ she said. Another parent, Mr Ayo Okinbanjo, told NAN that kidnapping flourished along the areas concerned because of the negligible presence of security personnel. “One can count the number of security agents on that route during day. “It is only few checkpoints that one gets to see the police on a route that is equivalent a two-hour drive. “Everywhere, you find bushes and very few open spaces that criminals find useful to perpetrate their crime. “The environment even makes these criminals to develop more confidence to the extent that they write letters to schools and streets, intimating them of their intention to raid the place,’’ he said. A concerned citizen, Mr John Edigwe, said sitting of security outfits in the area would also deny criminals a free reign in the communities concerned. Edigwe noted that kidnappers found the bushes in the areas as a haven to perpetrate their crime because there was no counter force. “The mere presence of barracks is enough to tell these criminals that the area is not conducive for their venture,’’ he said. A teacher, Mrs Grace Jonathan, said panic and pandemonium were the order of the day because of high rate of criminal activities going on in the areas in reference. She said both public and private schools along the route in the area inclined to provide security against crime and criminality in the areas concerned, especially the activities of kidnappers. “Government schools now have more police presence around them of which they have to spend more from their insufficient budget to sustain that policy. “Part of the funds for the feeding of boarding students has to be used on upgrading the security infrastructure of my school. “The insecurity of the areas is causing we, the teachers and parents to be sleepless, fearful and worrisome,’’ she said. NAN reports that activities of kidnappers and cultists have assumed disturbing dimension in Ikorodu and its environs in recent times. Many private and public schools between Itamaga in Ikorodu and Epe have had to abruptly terminate their third term session, immediately after the last examinations, due to criminal activities in the area. Last year, 52.9 percent of the candidates recorded the feat. The number jumped to 59.22 percent this year, out of the 1,559,662 candidates that sat for the examination. Adenipekun said WAEC is still investigating the exam cheats and that the schools of the students would be duly informed soon. “The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course for consideration. “The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools,’’ he said. He said that 923,486 of the 1,559,162 candidates that sat for the examination, obtained a minimum of credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics. The official said the percentage of candidates in this category in the WASSCE for school candidates was an improvement on what was obtained in the same examination in both 2015 and 2016, with 38.68 and 52.97 respectively. Giving a further breakdown of the results, the WAEC boss said that 1,084,214 candidates, representing 69.94 per cent, obtained credits and above in six subjects. The official said that 95,734 others, representing 5.64 per cent, had a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination. “Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently,’’ Adenipekun said. The head of national office commended the supervisors, examiners, and other persons for their immense contributions in ensuring a smooth conduct of the examination. “The coordination and marking of candidates’ scripts for the 2017 WASSCE for schools was successfully held between May 24 and June 11 at 83 marking venues spread across the country. “Having said this, we will like to state also that the Nigeria National Office of the council has concluded arrangements to commence the conduct of the WASSCE for private candidates from January/ February 2018. “This is part of our commitment in ensuring quality service delivery to the Nigerian public. “I also want to seize this opportunity to inform you that with the upgrade of the council’s ICT facilities, particularly the recently commissioned HP Converged System – a private cloud, the compability of the council’s ICT has now been enhanced,’’ he said. The WAEC official called on candidates who sat for the examination to check the details of their performance on the council’s result website within the next few hours. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will not condone multiple registration for Direct Entry and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). A statement signed by JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Mr Fabian Benjamin said in Abuja on Sunday. Benjamin described the act of multiple registration as a serious offence in the process of obtaining the Board’s application forms presently on sale. He said that the warning had become imperative for people to know and understand that violation of such rule would attract sanctions. “Candidates are to note that our advertisement for 2017 UTME clearly states the penalty for any candidate caught buying two forms. “Members of the public are requested to note that any candidate who indulges in double registration will be caught by our software and disqualified. “The Board is not interested in the candidates’ money as is being insinuated by certain group who suggested to the Board that such registration will enhance the revenue base of the Board. “No, we are more interested in the credibility of the examination and not the money, if money is our concern we will not be returning over five billion naira to the Federal Government coffers.’’ Benjamin said this year, the Board had so far remitted more than five billion naira to government, the highest ever in the 40 years of its existence. He said that the money was saved through the transparent and judicious use of resources. Benjamin urged candidates to disregard all information on admission, especially cut-off marks being circulated on the net. According to him, the Board has established new method of admission in line with its mandate to ensure fairness irrespective of tribe, religion and it is determined to meet the expectations of Nigerians. The JAMB public relations officer said that the Board had held consultations with universities across the country to enable candidates meet the requirement and secure admission without the assistance of anybody. According to him, no cut-off mark has been arrived at as this can only be done at a policy meeting, which is at the moment yet to be conveyed. “Do not allow yourselves to be defrauded by internet fraudsters, the policy meeting would commence the 2017 admission with all mode, process and acceptable conditions for admission. “The Prof. Oloyede led management is working to ensure transparent, acceptable and fair admission process. “We have designed software known as Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), where human interference will be completely removed, to promote credibility. “The admission criteria would be keyed into the software and it will select candidates blindly according to the institutions requirement without any primordial consideration.’’ SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/07/jamb-will-not-condone-multiple-registration-for-direct-entry-utme/ |
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it would henceforth ensure the resolution of all exam issues before releasing results of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), to avoid cancellation. Spokesperson of the exam body, Fabian Benjamin stated this in an interview with newsmen in Bwari, Abuja on Saturday, while confirming the release of the results Benjamin admitted that the results of supplementary examination conducted by the Board on July 1, had been ready for release since. “The results had been ready as usual; we release results two hours after examination; this delay was because we wanted to take our time to clear all issues. “This is also to ensure that all the CCTV at centres we conducted mop-up examinations were adequately fixed; we do not want situation where we release results before thinking of cancelling it. “What we want to be doing now as we have started with this mop-up examination, and will be doing in 2018, is to ensure all issues are resolved before releasing results. “It is our view that there is no need rushing to release results; it is better to do whatever is supposed to have been done, before we release the results.” He urged candidates yet to receive their supplementary examination results, not to panic, saying that no result from the mop-up examination was outstanding. He said that the breakdown of the 2017 UTME result could not be published at the moment since the Board was yet to conduct exam for foreign candidates. “We are still writing exam and it will be unfair to publish the whole results when people are still writing. “We just rolled out forms for foreign centres, so once we finish that, which is not going to take long, we will do the analysis and come to a conclusion,” Benjamin said. The Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) has captured four suspected kidnappers in Port Harcourt, including a final year student of the University of Port Harcourt. The team also recovered some money collected by the kidnappers from their victim as ransom. A reliable source closed to the team confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday. The source said that the kidnappers were arrested after they kidnapped one Blessing Kime inside a church at Rumuekini Community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers. IRT operatives were deployed to Port Harcourt to check the unending spate of abductions, cult activities and other crimes in the oil-rich state. “On June 27, at about 11.40 a.m., the team arrested the gang leader of the kidnappers, one Gift Attah, 26, popularly known as Okwulogu at Rumuakunde Community in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers. “The suspect, who is also the unit head of Iceland Confraternity in Rumuakunde, confessed to the kidnapping of Mrs Blessing Kime. “Exhibits recovered from him include the victim’s phone and his share from the ransom, the sum of N450, 000. “The suspect’s capture led to the arrest of other gang members,” the source stated. NAN learnt that the arrested kidnappers also confessed to the police how they entered the church premises and kidnapped Kime, holding her hostage until ransom was paid. It was also learnt that the UNIPORT student was used as errand boy and armourer to the abductors. Another member of the gang was identified simply as “Daddy Stephen’’, alias Marshall, while a 48-year-old man, Atayero Abiodun, from Osun, was preparing charms for the abductors. Abiodun was said to have confessed to collecting N150, 000 as his share from the ransom. OAU Denies Increasing Tuition Fee To N55,700. The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has said that it was not planning to increase its tuition fee to N55,700. The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities , University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, was recently quoted as claiming that no fewer than 38 universities across Nigeria had jerked up their fees. He name OAU as one of the schools affected by the increment. However, it was gathered that OAU students currently pay between N19,700 and N33,700, depending on their course of study. In a press statement on Tueday, the OAU Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, explained that the tuition fee remained as increased three years ago. Olarewaju said, “The attention of the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been drawn to a news item that ’38 Varsities increase tuition fees’, where OAU was listed among the universities that have increased their tuition fees. “Although there may be paucity of funds from the Federal Government in running the institutions of higher learning, which might have prompted some universities to upwardly review their fees, but the situation in OAU is quite different. “For the avoidance of doubt, there is no meeting, either of the university management or Senate, where the fee increment was announced; and the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Tope Ogunbodede, has not contemplated on increasing any fee in OAU. “In actual fact, his administration is poised to making the welfare of staff and students a topmost priority.” “Accordingly, the VC has advised the students, their parents and/or guardians to completely disregard as unfounded rumour the said news item. “The administrative and academic affairs of OAU will not be run in secret. The VC will not renege on his pledge of running a very open and transparent administration,” he added. Cheating in exams is on the increase in schools because students lack confidence in their ability, a university don has said. Dr. Aliyu Alhaji Abubakar of the Dangote Business School, Bayero University, Kano, (BUK) said lack of self confidence by students and intense pressure to score high grades have led to examination malpractice. “Students commonly cheat because they are stressed, not self-confident or they just don’t know the subject. They have a misconception that technology/classmate/wikipedia knows better, but it usually leads to vice versa consequences. Another reason to cheat is laziness. They are too lazy to prepare for tests or exams, so they try to find simpler ways to pass,” he said. Dr. Aliyu further said question paper leakage was another way of cheating which appeared to defy all solutions, adding that its persistence despite methods of blocking it was an indication of the malaise and corruption in society. He said cheating was not only about student behaviour; but that some teachers also encouraged it. SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/06/why-students-cheat-in-exams/ |
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said that the pressure on some school principals to increase the performance of their pupils in external examinations is responsible for the upsurge in the number of examination malpractice cases in the country. This was stated in a communiqué issued by the Nigeria Examination’s Committee (NEC) of WAEC at the end of its 63rd meeting. The examination body, therefore, called on the All Nigerian Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) to “act as a whistleblower to the council by reporting acts of examination malpractice during WASSCE.’’ The NEC called on government and all stakeholders to intensify the fight against exam malpractice by sanctioning reported erring supervisors and invigilators.” It commended the Benue State Government for issuing queries to principals indicted for aiding and abetting examination malpractice, adding that other state governments, “should set up machinery to sanction erring supervisors and invigilators to serve as deterrent to others.” The committee also said that examination centres caught engaging in examination malpractice would be delisted, while candidates would be barred from sitting for WASSCE for an unspecified number of years. The communiqué read in part, “The committee approved that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases of exam malpractice, which attracted the cancellation of the entire results be cancelled while the subject results of those involved in proven cases, which attracted cancellation of subject results, be similarly cancelled. “In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions, such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examination for a certain number of years, while some examination centres will be delisted.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/06/why-cases-of-examination-malpractice-is-rising-waec/ |
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released 1,606,901 results out of the 1,718,425 that registered in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, told a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday that the remaining 80,889 candidates results would be released soon, but 76,925 have been deliberately witheld because of alleged malpractices. “Six weeks into the registration, we harvested in preparation for the exam about 1.7 million registrations. “But so far, we have released the results of 1,606,901 candidates, leaving us with a balance of 80,889. “Out of this 80,889, we have deliberately withheld 76,925 results for further investigation because of alleged malpractices,” he said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, says it has yet to release cut-off marks for placements into tertiary institutions for the 2017 academic year. Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the policy committee meeting responsible for the marks had not met. “We want to appeal to all candidates to jettison such speculations and engage themselves in more meaningful ventures that would add value to their future,’’ he said. Benjamin said results of the just concluded 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination had since been released, with a few others still being previewed. “We want to appeal to Nigerians to understand that such candidates whose results are being previewed may not necessarily have participated in any malpractice. “But rather, centres where they sat for the examination had issues during the conduct of examination. “These issues were reflected on the CCTV footage and this suggests why they must be carefully investigated before releasing such results,” he said. The official said a school in Abia was discovered to have connected cables secretly to a distant hall for hired mercenaries to write for candidates. “This is very unfortunate given the fact that the school is a missionary school and supposed to be a leading light against such vices. “We urge candidates to note that no result will be withheld without a cogent reason as this explains why we are taking time to ensure that those who are innocent are exonerated. “Again, candidates are advised not to patronise any centre, office or shop for any service; please visit our offices in all the 36 states of the Federation and FCT for any complaint, enquiry or assistance. “This is also because our attention has also been drawn to an illegal centre being operated near our Ikoyi Office in Lagos with the aim of defrauding innocent candidates. “This centre collects all kinds of fees in cash for services that are even free. The general public should note that payments for any of our services are done via our TSA account with CBN and not cash.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/05/no-cut-off-mark-announced-yet-says-jamb/ |
Written By Anthony Chukwuebuka, CEO @ www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng Please i don’t have much time to spend on this, but i will make it brief. As JAMB has finally concluded the 2017 UTME examinations, many candidates will fall victims of this so called JAMB result upgrade. It’s very unfortunate that many candidates got below 180. I have seen many of them scoring 120, 130, 133, 150, 160, 165, 179, etc. Some red but still scored low while some did not even read at all. Most of them have been writing JAMB since 2010, does it sound funny? No it doesn’t. I so much feel your pain, it may or may not be your fault because not all are made to be educated. So what am i trying to say? Am trying to tell you that JAMB result upgrade is never possible this year because the security is very tight. I must tell you the whole truth, security is very tight this year unlike before. So, i guess there would be no room for upgrade. Let me tell you how they will do the so called JAMB result upgrade for you this year, they will just collect your JAMB login details, use it to login and only “Edit” your score for you. NOTE: the edit will not take effect on JAMB portal/DATA BASE. That type of edit is called photoshop. They will just send the photoshop result to you and ask you to print it out, without you knowing that your main score is still on JAMB portal/ DATA BASE. Here, am not trying to say that JAMB result upgrading is not real, it’s real but it depends on the person that will do it for you whether he is a direct source. Kindly NOTE that JAMB result upgrading could only be done at their main Headquarter in ABUJA. Please beware of internet fraudstars. Can’t you ask yourself this question? “Let me go and check whether the upgrade took effect on JAMB portal”. You will see that immediately you login to JAMB portal and input your JAMB Registration Number, and click on check result, you will see that your main UTME score is still there. This is to tell you that JAMB result upgrade can only be done at their headquarter. On the contrary, last year, a gir was defrauded N20,000 by a person known as Paul Okoye on facebook who claimed to be an admission officer in Federal Polytechnic Nekede. This Paul Okoye on facebook has defrauded many candidates of their hard earned money. Well, let me not talk about that for now, let me just focus on the topic for today. Do you know that after you must have been admitted with your fake upgraded JAMB result and after you must have been attending lectures feeling that you are now a full member of the school, one day, you will be called and be shown your real JAMB score and you will also be sent out of the instutution by which you must have spent alot of money on school fees, accommodation, etc. You must be screened out on your final year screening, so tell me, who is fooling who? You, JAMB, the Institution, or yourself?. Some of you don’t even think twice before taking action, they don’t think of the side effect of of what they are doing. This type of thing has happened to many students. My advice is this, if you know your JAMB score is low for your school of choice or maybe you did not reach your school cut-off mark, this is the last opportunity for you to correct your mistakes by changing your Course/Institution as the change of course/institution is ongoing. Do not hesitate to change your course/institution to be on a safer side. You will see some candidates who chose Federal and some competitive Universities like UNIBEN, UNILORIN, UNILAG, UNIZIK, UNIPORT, and had a low JAMB score, if you tell them to change the institution, they will refuse and tell you that they like the school without even considering their UTME scores. It’s never good to put your eggs in one basket unless you want to stay at home till another year. Summarily, beware of who you give your money to for JAMB result upgrading. Do not let them scam you. Once again, pray to God to direct you and give you wisdom to choose wisely. Pray to HIM so that this year admission will favour you. Share with your friends. Thanks and God bless. Ugo Ijeoma Ndianiefo is one of the over 1,000 Nigerian youths drawn from 20 tertiary institutions across the country that registered for the 2017 National Youth Oratory Contest, a competition fast becoming one of Nigeria’s biggest platform for youth interaction and constructive argument. The event held in Awka, Anambra State, was a brainchild of VIP-Hub Media anchors-Ekene, Chiagozie and Elochukwu Ezeumeanya, who developed the idea to become the darling of students. The VIP-Hub reality television show, according to Ekene, one of the organizers, was established in 2011 as Literary Insight Network (LIN). It was a university-based club that frequently organized book and poetry reading sessions and reviews for members. The quest by the organisers for a sponsor caught the attention of the head, Department of Philosophy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Rev. Father Prof. Bonachristus Uchenna Umeogu, who donated N1m and a trip to South Africa. When Ndianiefo, an indigene of Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi Local Government Area of Anambra State was registering for the competition, little did he believe that he would emerge winner of the N1m prize and one week leadership training in South Africa. The topic of the competition was: “Nigeria as entrepreneurial hub of Africa” which the orators argued for and against. Proponents of the verbal battle argued that Nigeria had groomed and nurtured young entrepreneurs and had advanced the economy of Africa through its rich culture, business ideas and orientation as well as its population. But the visibly angry opponents wondered why Nigeria should be regarded as the entrepreneurial hub of Africa while only a few individuals in the country are entrepreneurs in a country characterized by lack of power supply and multiple taxation among others. At the end of the competition, Ugo Ijeoma Ndianiefo emerged first with 83.3 points, followed by Nwenyi Ogechi, Placid Martins, Eze nwakuba and Anidebe Collins. In his remarks, Mr. Ekene Ezeumeanya advised Nigerian youths to insist on hard work, resilience and integrity to always guide their conduct. He regretted that Nigerian governments and individuals have not created a conducive environment for youth entrepreneurship to thrive, even as he described such as no barrier to anyone who wants to succeed and survive. The sponsor of the programme, Rev Fr. Bonachristus Umeogu, said he desired to see youths with constructive thinking who can take their destinies in their hands. “We are seriously looking forward to seeing the future belonging to the youth, we also need youths with constructive thinking. Some people, especially the youth, move with crowd and hence, lose their vision, identity and point of view in life. We are seriously looking for a civilized future. If one is a leader and doesn’t care about the person he is leading, it is doom and that is why we must all strive to build a civilized society,” he said. Prof Okunna frowned at the slow pace of development in Nigeria but expressed optimism that the future would be better for Nigerian youths. Speaking on Nigeria as the entrepreneurial hub of Africa, Prof. Okunna expressed concern with the present economy, but added: “I am optimistic that there is hope for Nigeria. Nigeria has great potentials but we are not utilizing it, we need SMEs to grow but my worry is that the SMEs may not thrive unless the power sector improves.” She admitted that Nigerian governments technically failed, and called on the present government to declare a state of emergency on the power sector, even as she emphasized that the country promotes wrong values. A close look at Ndianiefo Ugo Ijeoma Ndianiefo was born on April 11, 1994 in Libreville, Gabon. A native of Otolo-Nnewi, in Nnewi-North in Anambra State, he was brought back home three years after. At Nnewi, he was enrolled in Dubem Primary School, Nnewi, where he attended his nursery and primary 1-4 classes, but sequel to his family’s relocation to Onitsha, he attended primary 5 and 6 at King’s Foundation Primary School, Fegge, Onitsha. His got post-primary education at St. Patrick’s College, Asaba, where he later became the senior prefect, led many competitions in debate and discovered he had flair for public speaking. “I used to be very fragile, until one day, my headmaster said, you need to be strong. That really motivated me, and from that day I began to discover the many things I could do; my confidence increased by the day”, he recalled. To prove his strength, Ugo ventured into sports, from goalkeeping to becoming one of the best basketball players of the school which he represented at the 2006 Milo Basketball Competition in Lagos. “Lack of support from my parents to pursue basketball as a career shifted my interest to high jump and with the experience I had as a basketball player, I blended as a high jump athlete”, he said. As a high jump athlete, Ugo represented his school at the National School Sports in 2008 where he set a record of 1.92 meters, a feat that earned him a spot to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games in India that year. In 2009, he represented the country at the African Youth Championship in Mauritius. His performance in sports earned him two international scholarships which his parents declined. He enrolled for a Diploma in Law programme at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2009 and in 2011, got an admission to study Law at the same university where he proved to be a public speaker by becoming the winner of the Unizik Brain FASUI (2014) and Unizik Orator (2015). He also became the first student coordinator, Unizik Debating Team in 2015, and from 2016 till date, is the coordinator of Global Awareness Society International (GASAI). Inspiration “My principle in life is ‘Nobody owes you anything’, and my money principle is, ‘Find what you love doing, and find someone to pay you for doing it’.” According to him, these two statements have guided his every step. “When I remember that no one owes me anything, I work harder and never have cause to depend on anybody. Finding what you love doing and getting someone to pay you for doing it has always worked for me. Passion drives wealth,” he added. He however noted that there are people whose lives had inspired him, especially his mother, Mrs. Ijeoma Ndianefo and Lolo Elizabeth Ezenna. The win Everyone assumes that winning the oratory competition should be a period of celebration and relaxation for Ugo, but he has perceived this differently. He believes that to whom much is given, much is expected. “I am happy and at the same time perplexed because I understand that every accomplishment comes with a bigger responsibility. I am sure everyone wants to know what the money will be used for. The simple answer is that I will give it back to the society in multiple ways, especially in training public speakers,” he said. He disclosed that he has plans to start an initiative which would deliver good a oratory platform for Nigerian youths. Future plan Ugo is confident that in the next five years, he would be a key player in Nigeria’s youth politics, public speaking, public oration and public service. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied that marks are being deducted from candidates of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). In a statement released in Abuja on Friday by JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the body said the rumour was “devilish”. “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has urged all candidates who participated in the 2017 to disregard any information being circulated by mischief makers on the deduction of marks by the board. “This rumour is false, devilish and intended to cause disaffection among the candidates. “The board has not deducted any marks from any candidate and is not contemplating doing that as it is not a condition for sanction in any of the provisions of the law against malpractice. “Again, we call on all candidates to be mindful of fraudulent characters who will send misleading informations to create panic and take advantage of the situation to defraud candidates,” he said. The board also advised candidates to disregard rumours, that some people could not check their results because they owe JAMB. “The board has also noted that some candidates who could not check their results are being told that their results are not out because they are owing JAMB some money. “This is a lie and candidates are advised not to pay any money to anybody as their results are send to their mails and also on our website:www.jamb.org.ng. “Candidates are to login with their registration number or email address to print. “The board will be concluding the 2017 examination on Saturday, May 20. “Any candidate with any challenge should not hesitate to contact the board or check our website for information and numbers.” SOURCE: www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2017/05/jamb-debunks-rumours-of-marks-deductions/ |
