The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied commencing the sale of application forms for the 2020/2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known while speaking with NAN on Friday in Abuja. Benjamin explained that the board was still in the process of admissions and so had not commenced the sale of any form. “There’s a guideline being circulated presently that the board will soon commence the sale of its 2020 UTME forms in January, while others even said it had commenced already. “This is not true because we have not rolled out our forms for sale yet; admissions into tertiary institutions are still ongoing and have not closed yet because we work with a calendar. “Nigerians should disregard all that is presently being circulated, it is all the antics of fraudsters who want to hoodwink unsuspecting public and dupe them of their hard earned income. “When we commence the sale, we have our official channels like our Twitter handle to pass the information and would also advertise to let the public be aware,” he said. Benjamin also noted that JAMB was still in talks with the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC), over the plan for prospective applicants to acquire a National Identification Number (NIN), before registering for the examination. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso chapter on Wednesday issued a ten-day ultimatum to the university management to pay their August, September and October salaries or face industrial crisis. The ultimatum, DAILY SCHOOL GIST gathered, started on Wednesday, today, and ends on Friday, 15th November, 2019. The union said it might resort to strike at the expiration of the ultimatum. It was gathered that academic staff of the University are being owed eleven months pay. But, Chairman of the union, Biodun Olaniran and Secretary Toyin Abegunrin in a congress resolution made available to DAILY POST threatened to withhold the Semester results of 2018/2019 academic session until the salaries are paid. According to the Union, LAUTECH academics deserved to be paid their earned salaries without begging. It was gathered that the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Ologunde had attributed non-payment of salaries to non-release of subvention to it by the owner states. ASUU maintained that the welfare of her members remained paramount in her demands and it would do everything at her disposal not to expose her members to undeserved economic hardship. “The Union gives the University administration till Friday 15th November, 2019 to pay the salaries of August, September and October 2019 failure of which will cause the Union to hold a Congress on Monday 18th November, 2019 where necessary action deemed fit will be taken. “That rain semester results of 2018/2019 academic session would not be submitted until the said salaries are paid,” it said. The House of Representatives was on Wednesday divided over the motion to stop the conduct of examinations of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the country’s higher institutions. NAN reports that in a motion moved by Rep. Ademorin Kuye (APC-Lagos), during the plenary session, the lawmakers debated for and against the requirements of the motion. Kuye, in the motion, had asked the house to urge all higher institutions to stop the post UTME/JAMB screening examinations. He also sought the house to mandate the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to call for a joint meeting of the Ministry of Education, JAMB and the National Universities Commission (NUC). The mandate was to develop an acceptable standard of JAMB examinations in conformity with the requirements of academic institutions in the country. The lawmaker said that JAMB which was established in 1978, was saddled with the responsibility of conducting matriculation examinations for entry into tertiary institutions. He argued that Nigerians paid monies to purchase the JAMB/UTME forms to qualify them to write the examinations to gain admission into higher institutions of their choice. “This is after payments and undergoing rigorous registration and examination processes, the said higher Institutions subject students to another internal examination/test called POST UTME/JAMB on payment of yet another fee without any consideration for indigent parents and students,” he said. He said that the payment of fees for the screening exercise conducted by the institutions was “not backed by any law and the proceeds therefore are not accounted. “This leaves room for manipulation and exploitation and lack of acceptability of the fund generated.” Supporting the motion, Rep. Benjami Chinedu Obidigwe (APGA-Anambra), said that the post UTME examinations conducted by the universities was just to “expolit our children. “Our education in the country has resolved to some form of extortion. “The universities corner the funds from the screening exercises because they failed to account for such revenue during their budget defence. “Post UTME has no education value to our system. I hope that the committee will look into this to put an end to it. Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia) also said that there was need to stop the conduct of such examinations because the universities could not account for the utilisation of funds. Kalu also said that the conduct of the post UTME test by schools was “casting aspersions on the integrity of JAMB. “Granted, there are leakages, but JAMB has to sit up. What we have over seas is interviews. ”When you pass the examinations you are been invited over for an interview not the way JAMB is going about it here.” Speaking against the motion, Rep. Samuel Chinedu (PDP-Anambra), said that the post UTME/JAMB examinations complemented the actual JAMB examinations. “All they do is cross check what JAMB has done. Admitting students who are not properly checked is rather worse than the financial implications,” he said. Also speaking against the test, Rep. Aniekan Umanah (PDP-Akwa Ibom), said that the universities were “exploiting the internal leakages on what JAMB is doing. “There is need for this motion to be revisited so that we can have a common ground.” The house, however, resolved that the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services interface with JAMB on the conduct of the post UTME/JAMB by higher institutions and report back within four weeks. The Electrical Dealers Association in Ghana yesterday made good the threat to lock up retail shops operated by foreigners, citing the violation of their local legislation. Not fewer than 50 shops owned by Nigerians were shut down at the Opera Square in Central Accra. The association had last week issued a notice to all non-Ghanaians to vacate their shops by November 4. Its spokesman, Samuel Addo, the decision was consistent with Section 27(1) of Act 865 of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council which reserves retail business for indigenes. Members of the association, at about 10 am, stormed shops owned by Nigerians inside the malls and ordered them to leave, while they padlocked their shops. The Ghanaian traders did not encounter any resistance as Nigerians there readily complied. Also, security officers were not present at the time of the incident. Some Nigerians, who considered themselves citizens by virtue of naturalisation or marriage, had earlier appealed to their hosts not to lock up their shops. The president of the Nigerian Union of Traders Associations in Ghana, Chukwuemeka Nnaji, who was present during the clamp down, later reported the incident to the police. There was calm at the Opera Square yesterday evening, as business went uninterrupted in the electrical hub. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has barred parents, guardians and other persons from making any changes to the data page or profile of candidates for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME 2020). The board said only candidates could make such changes to their data page or profile henceforth. In a statement on Monday by its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB warned its zonal and state offices nationwide, including Computer-Based Test Centres not to transact any business on candidates’ profiles on the request of parents, guardians or other proxies, except the candidates come in person. The board said that it observed that there were cases of conflict on authorisation of changes on candidate’s data, majorly between candidates and their parents or guardians. The board noted that it would apply sanctions to any of its workers or CBT operators who default in the rule. The statement reads in part: “It has been observed that there are cases of conflict on authorisation of changes on candidate’s data, majorly between candidates and their parents or guardians. “This is in addition to fraudsters taking advantage of the naivety of some candidates to collect their vital access codes to effect unauthorised changes on a candidate’s profile. “Consequently, nobody, including parents or guardians or any proxy should be allowed to transact any business on any candidate’s profile. “No third party should be allowed access into or alter the profile of any candidate at any of the board’s offices or any Computer-Based Test Centres. “Only candidates themselves (not with anybody, any agent or parent/guardian) should be entertained to conduct transactions on their profile at the board’s offices and the computer based test centres. There is no exception to this instruction. “All JAMB Zonal and state offices and accredited and approved CBT centres are hereby directed to strictly comply with this instruction without any waiver or use or misuse of discretion. “The board’s system is automated to monitor, report and alert on access and alteration on every candidate’s profile, including providing information on the person, the place and the system or facilities that transacted such activities. “The board will not hesitate to sanction any person or centre that fails to comply with this directive.” SOURCE: https://dailypost.ng/2019/11/04/utme-jamb-speaks-on-parents-third-parties-making-changes-to-candidates-profile/

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has advised candidates not to pay money to any of its staff for any services. Rather, JAMB has asked the candidates to direct all payments for its services to the Treasury Single Account, TSA. This is coming on the heels of allegation that some workers of JAMB in its Lagos office were extorting N2000 from students who wanted to do any documentation with them. Reacting, JAMB said it frowns at any form of financial dealings between candidates and its workers. In a terse statement on its Twitter handle on Thursday, the Board said: “All payments on JAMB services are made directly to the board’s TSA. Please be informed that the board frowns on any form of financial dealings between candidates and workers. “Candidates involved in any financial transaction with a staff of the board should notify the board immediately and also provide any useful information about such staff for necessary action.” Recall that the board had earlier advised candidates who wish to write the 2020 UTME to visit the nearest National Identity Management Commission’s office to have their data captured. It said candidates must register for the National Identification Number as a prerequisite to writing the 2020 examination. “All candidates wishing to take the 2020 UTME must have the National Identification Number. Prospective candidates are urged to visit the nearest NIMC office for their capturing. The board would only register candidates with NIN,” it said. Lalasticlala, Seun, Mynd4. This really need the front page to help oppose this motion by the FUOYE VC |
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said that the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, should be ready to face its wrath if he refused to reduce what it termed, “satanic increase” of some fees payable by students of the university. NANS Threatens Showdown With FUOYE VC Over Alleged Increase in Fees NANS said it “condemns in its entirety, the arbitrary increase in some sundry fees by the authority of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State; saying the alleged increase “is a total show of insensitivity by the Vice-Chancellor and his team.” NANS alleged that acceptance fee had been increased from N40,000 to N50,000, while medical fee that used to be N4,500 had been hiked up to N10,000. According to to the students’ leaders, the sundry fee is now above N120,000, while the cost of hostel has gone beyond N50,000; adding that “other exorbitant fees will sum up to N30,000.” A statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Azeez Adeyemi, and made available to DAILY SCHOOL GIST on Saturday said it was disheartening that the university could still increase fees without taking into cognisance the economic condition of the country. “It is very disheartening that the university management can still have the audacity to increase all sorts of fees, considering the economic situation of the country and that of our parents in particula,” he said. The students body called for the cancellation of the purported increase in fees saying, “We hereby call on the management of Federal University Oye Ekiti to as a matter of urgency, cancel this unreasonable increase. “We call on the Federal Ministry of Education, through the National Universities Commission, to call the Vice-Chancellor and the management to order; while we equally enjoin the Federal Government to, with immediate effect, constitute a high level panel with men of good character to probe the projects executed (completed or ongoing) by the present management of FUOYE, considering all sorts of fees being charged our students in this institution.” The statement reads inter alia: “We are shocked with the level of impunity and atrocities being committed by the Vice-Chancellor and the university management through the introduction of all sort of illegal fees. This includes the misappropriation of the university funds in the course of executing majority of the projects under their watch. “Of great concern to the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, is the level of levity the university management handles the university’s students’ welfare issues. The last students unrest led by the Students Union Government of FUOYE, where we lost two of our students leaders is indeed an avoidable one if the management of this institution had given priority to students’ welfare. “We hereby call on Prof. Soremekun, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti to, with immediate effect, stop the collection of this unreasonable fees and refund same to students who were forced to pay this satanic increment. Failure to do this, the management should be ready to face the wrath of the National Secretariat of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).” Efforts to get the reactions of the management of FUOYE, through the university’s Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Bakji, was unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report. Calls made to Bakji’s phone number did not go through. A text message sent to him was not replied either. The Ogun State Government seems to have lifted the suspension placed on the payment of Parent Teacher Association (PTA) levies in all public primary and secondary schools as well as technical colleges in the state. However, the state government said any PTA in any school or college must get the approval of the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology before embarking on the collection of such levy. Government also ordered that, “learners must not be discriminated against on account of non-payment” of the levy, which it termed ‘donation’, by their parents. DAILY SCHOOL GIST recalled that the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun on September 21, won the hearts of parents when he ordered the suspension of a controversial N3,700 ‘donation’ reportedly introduced by the Parents/Teachers’ Association (PTA) for payment by pupils in all the state’s public secondary schools and technical colleges. The Ministry of Education had earlier issued a circular that Gov Abiodun had approved the payment of the N3,700 by pupils in public secondary schools and technical colleges in the state, as requested by the PTA, for the 2019/2020 academic session; contrary to Abiodun’s campaign promise to make education free in all public schools in Ogun. But in a recent circular from the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Department of Planning, Research and Statistics, Okemosan, Abeokuta on Monday October 7, government said: “Notwithstanding the above (free education policy), Parent Teacher Association in our public schools, in line with its constitution is at liberty to donate in support of the government, to provide or rehabilitate infrastructural facilities, employ and support PTA teachers, guards, develop sports etc.” The circular with reference number EDU 666/25, was signed by Adeotan S. O. for the Permanent Secretary and addressed to all headteachers of public primary schools, all principals of public secondary schools, all principals of government science and technical colleges and all Zonal Education Officers in Ogun State. According to the circular, “all other payments on revenue items into government accounts under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology have now been restored.” Government also said it has reduced the cost of transfer form, both inter and intra, for public primary and secondary schools to N5,000 flat rate. An officer of the Ministry of Education, who confirmed the authenticity of the circular, told DAILY POST that it used to be N10,000 for inter transfer and N20,000 for intra transfer. In the same vein, “the officer also clarified that the cost of special placement form and relocation form as it applies to transition from primary to secondary schools has been fixed for N2,500 flat rate” (for those who were not captured when government was enrolling pupils free of charge). While reiterating the Gov Abiodun’s promise to make education free in all public schools in the state, the Ministry warned that “any public officer caught flouting its regulations “will be strictly sanctioned” as no levy must be demanded from pupils, except until the PTA seeks and gets the approval of the state government. The circular reads in full: “In line with the electoral promises of governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, education remains free in all public primary and secondary schools as well as technical colleges in the state. “Consequently, no headteacher, principal nor teacher in our public schools and colleges must demand any payment from learners of education service delivery. “Notwithstanding the above, Parent Teacher Association in our public schools, in line with its constitution is at liberty to donate in support of the government to provide or rehabilitate infrastructural facilities, employ and support PTA teachers, guards, develop sports etc. However, learners must not be discriminated against on the account of non-payment by their parents. Every donation by Parent-Teacher Association in our schools must have a written approval of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. “In tandem with the tradition of some of our schools, especially those with boarding facilities, learners are allowed to willfully procure school berets, caps badges, files, etc at non-exploitative rates approved only by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. These materials could be bought in Tuck Shops located in the school. “The cost of transfer form, both inter and intra, for public primary and secondary schools is now fixed for Five thousand naira (N5,000.00) flat rate. “The cost of special placement form and relocation form as it applies to transition from primary to secondary schools has been fixed for two thousand, five hundred naira (N2,500.00) flat rate. “All other payments on revenue items into government accounts under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology have now been restored. “Any public officer caught flouting any of these regulations will be strictly sanctioned “All education stakeholders are enjoined to abide fully with the provisions of this circular in the interest of the sanctity of the growth of education in our dear state. “Members of the public are encouraged to call the following helplines for further clarification and enlightenment. They are namely: Dele – 08060063615, Lanre – 08140117425.” SOURCE: https://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2019/10/12/ogun-state-govt-lifts-ban-payment-pta-levy-public-schools-give-conditions/ |

He stated that NYSC had begun investigations into the activities of the universities involved in the fraudulent practice. In a statement by the NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, Ibrahim was quoted as saying: “It is unfortunate that some institutions of higher learning, particularly in Cotonou, Benin Republic, present to us people who didn’t go through the four walls of the university as graduates for NYSC mobilization. “We are presently investigating some of such so-called graduates, many of whom cannot write or spell any word in English.” Adeyemi also revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has pledged to support the NYSC in combating fraudulent mobilization of unqualified graduates for national service. The EFCC had reportedly commended corps members for educating Nigerians on the dangers of corruption through the Anti-corruption Community Development Service Groups. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on all electoral officers, especially members of the academia, to strive to live above board as Nigerians go to the polls on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Chairman, University of Lagos chapter of the union, Dr Dele Ashiru, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos. NAN reports that Saturday’s election, which was initially scheduled for Feb. 16, was postponed by the Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, citing logistics and operational challenges. According to Ashiru, members of the academia and even students, who will be participating actively in Saturday’s polls, must ensure they maintain a high level of integrity. He added that they must ensure they do not lose focus no matter the pressure, and see their call to service as something that will enhance national development. “Election is a game, not war. Whoever wins and does so transparently, should be magnanimous in victory. “And those that do not win should take it in good faith, knowing that there is another time. “We must at all times, strive to put the interest of our country above any other thing else,’’ the unionist admonished. The National Parent/Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) also called on Nigerians generally to join hands with the INEC in ensuring that the election was peaceful and free from unnecessary violence or conducts capable throwing the country into chaos. The association’s 2nd National Deputy President, Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, added that students, especially those who would be participating in the election must not allow themselves to be used by the politicians, no matter who was involved. According to him, they must ensure that they discharge their duties by following the rules as provided for in the Electoral Act. “We are happy that the strike is over now and that these students can go back to their respective campuses, where they had registered, to exercise their rights. “Having said this, we also know that some of them have been engaged to assist in Saturday’s polls, just like our youth corps members. So, they all must not be carried away by any form of pressure they may find themselves in the course of carrying out their electoral duties. “They should insist in doing the right thing, as anything contrary may turn around to hunt them in the future, one way or the other. “They must not allow themselves to be bought over, or used for ballot box snatching and other electoral offences. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to show mercy on university students by quickly meeting the demands of the union. The union said it embarked on the strike to make the ruling class responsible for the future of Nigerian children. ASUU, in a release signed by the Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, described the call by the Labour Minister, Chris Ngige, on the union to have mercy on students and call off its strike “a merciless utterance.” According to Omole, the statement by the minister exposed the ruling government insincerity and callousness to the wellbeing of Nigerian students. ASUU said since government was a continuum, it was regrettable that Chris Ngige who is being paid salaries put in place by previous governments as a minister will say previous governments caused the problem of the strike by signing 2009 agreements. The ASUU boss who noted that the present government has not shown mercy to education and health sectors of the nation said the union has a genuine concern to truncate the plans of the ruling capitalist to destroy the future of Nigerian youths by not funding education. The statement reads: “Education is an instrument of liberation which will stop many youths from joining kidnapping gangs, armed robbery, militancy and terrorism. “We are patriots otherwise we would not go on strike. We would have been looking and allow everything to be destroyed. “But we cannot allow our future (children) to be taught in zoo-like conditions. This kind of education system cannot give us a leader who will be kind to others if we are not kind to them by giving them the best environment to learn from. “Nigerians should join us to beg President Buhari to meet our demands on time rather than using them for talking approach.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/strike-ASUU-begs-buhari-to-show-mercy-on-students/

Allegations of sex-for-marks and other related activities are currently threatening academic activities at the Delta State Polytechnic in Ogwashi Uku. Though none of the male lecturers fingered in the illicit and evil act has been caught, it was gathered that the polytechnic is at present enmeshed in the alleged sex scandal. It was gathered that no examination conducted by the accused lecturers that is not followed by demands for sex, especially within ND One courses and HND Two finals; a situation some of the female students, who turned down the lecturers’ sex-for-marks demands, are threatened with failure or a re-sit for any of their written courses. A HND finals student, who spoke to newsmen in the area, said, “A lecturer in my department, Mass Communication (name withheld) has been asking me out right from my HND one and I refused. Because of that, he failed me. I begged him with N20,000 he refused, saying he will make love to me twice and restore my marks, I am confused as many of my mates have graduated but I am still struggling to pass my examinations”. Sources alleged that these randy lecturers are often armed with condoms when coming to work and in most cases move into a nearby hotel to the school with their female students to have sexual intercourse that will in the end lead to the award of marks. Confronted with the allegations, lecturers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described it as frivolous and untrue, stressing that the female students were out to destroy their careers. It was further gathered that those female students, who turned down sex-for-marks entreaties by the lecturers, were allegedly subjected to untold disgrace and failure in their courses and cannot press home petition to the school authorities, particularly with stern warnings from the randy lecturers’ aides allegedly known to be notorious cultists. Speaking to newsmen in the school, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Manfred Oghen said, “We have got several reports by our female students of male lecturers asking for sex for marks, and we have made recommendations to the school authorities to no avail. The cases are on the increase, and we are appealing to the management of the school to take bold steps to sack or bring the lecturers involved to book, it’s really an unfortunate situation at present.” Mr Valentine Utulu, a journalist who narrated his recent experience with a few students (names withheld) who were supposed to have graduated, but for turning down the request for sex for marks, are still in the school. According to Utulu; “the girl is my sister, the lecturer she told me had demanded for sex in one of the courses she turned down, her project work was not signed. She said she offered N20,000 to the lecturer but refused, insisting on sex. I personally confronted the PRO of the Polytechnic, Mr Manfred, who confirmed to me that the school management is not taking a drastic action against the act. It started during the time of the former rector. We hope that some thing will be done about the act”. Efforts to speak with the new rector of the polytechnic, Professor (Mrs) Stella Olishemiyeke, was not successful as she was said to have travelled out of Ogwashi Uku when DAILY SCHOOL GIST called at her office. However, the Chairman, Board of Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Dr Festus Okunbo said no report of such has been reported to the management, adding that “we will not treat such report if it gets to us and established that the lecturers were culpable. The lecturers involved will be sacked. We cannot joke with such illicit activities, The administration of Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has zero tolerance for illicit and fraudulent activities”. He then called on the female students sexually harassed to report directly to his office for necessary action. Dr Okunbo, who spoke to newsmen in Asaba, said that any lecturer found wanting or accused of sexual harassment by the female students, and it is found to be true will be disgraced and shown the way out. He called on parents to be vigilant in the activities of their children while in school, especially in the rising cases of ritual killings orchestrated by ‘Yahoo plus’ boys across the country.
