The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it will stop using cyber cafes for registration of candidates, starting from the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said this on Thursday on the sideline of a meeting with proprietors of Computer-Based Test centres at the University of Lagos. “We are no longer going to allow the cyber cafes to do the registration exercise for prospective candidates because they are extorting candidates and overcharging them. “They also do services they do not have the capacity to do, coupled with the fact that there was no way of tracking them because they were not registered. “Another major reason is the mix-up they create on the data of the candidates. Some will just ask the candidates to write their names and other details down for them. “On accumulating such data, they now get all of them mixed-up, hereby creating problems for these candidates. “We know there will be uproar because they make a lot of illegitimate money from these services, but we cannot leave the candidates at their mercy, particularly when people will make noise that it is JAMB that was extorting them,” Oloyede said. He urged all prospective candidates to do their registration and access the board’s major services, in any of its 718 accredited centres in the country. Oloyede said the board would commence the sale of the registration form on January 3, 2019 and would span six weeks. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter on Wednesday prevented Noble Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon Rtd and former Education Minister, Dr Oby Ezekwesili from speaking at an anti-corruption event. The union led by its chairman, Dr Kasim Umaru, disrupted the event held at the University of Abuja. Umaru told NAN in a telephone interview on Wednesday that they disrupted the programme because of the ongoing strike, adding that they have no regret for their actions. He said such magnitude of programme could not hold in the institution because lecturers were also involved in the event. “Those eminent personalities for the programme are all aware of our plight and did nothing, we disrupted the event because we are on strike,” he said. The convener of the event and National Coordinator of African Initiative Against Corruption and Exam Malpractice AFICEM, Dr Francis Abioye regretted the action of the ASUU, saying they erred by disrupting the event. Abioye said the management of the university had earlier approved the institution’s auditorium as venue for the anti corruption programme. He said the programme was not an academic event, but was organized to educate Nigerians especially students against corruption and related cases. In his remarks, the university Students’ Union Government (SUG), President, Mr Chizurum Anabaronye said the development was regrettable and disappointing. “It is unfortunate because students would have benefited immensely in the programme considering the personalities involved in the programme. “Wole Soyinka is a person every student wants to see and the only opportunity to hear him speak was disrupted, we mobilized the students for the event but later communicated to them on the development,” he said. One of the facilitators and Osun High Court Judge, Justice Oloyode Folahanmi, who also spoke to NAN said AFICEM planned to celebrate the 2018 anti corruption day with a lecture on the `Benefits of Examination Ethics’ which was disrupted. “The Noble Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka, other eminent persons and myself were to speak to Nigerian students on the need to abide by the rules guiding examination ethics. “We are partners in progress, we feel the plight of ASUU and we want to fix Nigerian problem so it was wrong to disrupt the programme,” he said. While calling on FG to address the demands of ASUU, Folahanmi said the reason for targeting students was because of the belief that quest for societal regeneration must begin with the youths. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan Zone, has warned the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Osogbo, Professor Labode Popoola against harassing and threatening its members in the university. ASUU issued this warning through a statement made available to DAILY SCHOOL GIST by its Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Ade Adejumo, at the end of the zonal meeting held at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso on Monday. Adejumo in the statement entitled, “ASUU warns UNIOSUN Vice Chancellor against harassment of members”, alleged Popoola of compelling members to break the strike and attempting to completely eradicate ASUU in UNIOSUN by compelling members to attend management, senate, principal officers and other statutory meetings during strike. He said, “Professor Popoola was alleged of compelling members to break the Strike and attempting to completely eradicate ASUU in Uniosun through the following anti-union activities and hostile administrative policies among others: “Compelling members to attend management, senate, principal officers and other statutory meetings during strike and holding the 7th convocation of the University between Monday 19th and Thursday 22nd November, 2018 without any waiver from ASUU. Implementation of the obnoxious “No work no pay“ rule in UNIOSUN even when the NUC had directed all Vice-Chancellors and Councils to stay action. “Stoppage of deduction of the monthly check-off dues from the salaries of our members to the coffers of ASUU. Issuance of threat circulars to members, who are currently on lawful strike to commence uploading of the results of the 2017/2018 harmattan and rain semesters on the University’s RPMS. “Directing members to resume academic activities when you are clearly aware that the strike is still actively on. Victimisation of the Branch Officers who were on lawful union’s assignment. “The zonal body of the union, however, commended the branch officers and the entire members of ASUU-UNIOSUN for their resolve to fight for truth and justice towards ensuring that university education is adequately funded in Nigeria. “No reasonable university administrator would force ASUU members to break this strike because dividends of such struggles have always ended up on the table of Vice-Chancellors; any attempt to strangulate the hen that lays the golden eggs is therefore hypocritical.” Adejumo, while speaking further, urged the Vice Chancellor not to implement policies that are antithetical to the ASUU struggle. “Vice-Chancellors, Professor Popoola inclusive are members of ASUU and should not be seen to implement policies that are antithetical to the to ASUU struggle. “Now that the strike has entered the fifth week, ASUU enjoined all members at that branch to disregard any directive of the Vice-Chancellor that contravenes the strike bulletins 1-5 issued by the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) of the Union and sternly warned Professor Popoola to desist from harassing its members and to abide by the rules of the Union or risk being sanctioned. “The union will soon come out with a full statement on the activities of Professor Labode Popoola, unbecoming of a University Vice-Chancellor, which include his militarised mode of administration and utter disregard for rights and privileges of members of staff.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/ASUU-strike-ASUU-warns-uniosun-vc-popoola-against-harassment-of-members/

Spokesman of the President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has suggested that it was the will of God that some bigwigs of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, dumped the party and President Muhammadu Buhari. According to him, it was divinely designed that most politicians Nigerians have been complaining about are now converged in one political party against President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of 2019 presidential election. APC has seen its top members in the National Assembly and some state governors moved to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In a tweet on Sunday, Keyamo, a senior lawyer, believes this was done to bring down Buhari. He also believes that having gathered in one boat, Nigerians have the opportunity to “sink the boat” in 2019. Keyamo said, “By some divine design, most of the people Nigerians have always complained about have now congregated in one political boat this time around against one man, PMB. “In 2019, Nigerians have a unique opportunity of sinking that boat once and for all to give Nigeria a new lease of life.” Source: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/2019-why-gathering-of-politicians-against-buhari-is-divine-keyamo/

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed that all Nigerian Universities should revert to the five point scale of grading system hitherto in use with effect from the 2018/2019 academic session. In a statement signed by Dr G.B. Kumo, Director Academic Planning for the Executive Secretary of NUC, the Commission stated that it has been inundated with series of inquiries particularly from the International Organizations and Foreign Universities on the status of the four point scale in use and previous degrees issued during the five point scale. Presenting the letter on the Grading System and Degree classification in the Nigerian University System to Members of Senate, the Director Academic Planning Unit, Professor Vincent Asuru said that the issue of course credit system of Grade Point Average in the Nigerian University System was discussed by Directors of Academic Planning Units early 2017 when they met and that the issue of the removal of pass degree was discussed leading to the adoption of a four point grading system. However, the four point scale which some universities started implementing was also found to have severe implementation shortcomings with some universities observing serious difficulties getting students to acquire average class of degree while the scale made it easier for students to have first class degrees. Professor Vincent Asuru however stated that Ignatius Ajuru University of Education had maintained the five point scale of grading system before the directives from the National Universities Commission ( NUC). Below is an excerpt of the letter from NUC dispatched to all Vice Chancellors of the various Universities in Nigeria. Vice Chancellors would please recall that in early 2017, Director of Academic Planning met to discuss the issue of Course Credit System and Grade Point Average in the Nigerian University System in particular, the issue of the removal of Pass Degree was discussed leading to the adoption of a 4-point grading system. However, the 4-point scale which some universities started implementing was also found do have severe implementation short comings, with some universities observing serious difficulties in getting students to acquire average class of degree, while the scale made it easier for students to have first class degrees. Furthermore, the commission is recently enundated with series of inquires particularly from International Organizations and Foreign Universities on the status of the 4-point scale in use and previous degrees issued using the 5-point scale. In view of that, I am directed to inform all Vice Chancellors that all Nigerian Universities should revert to the Five-point scale hitherto in use with effect from the 2018/2019 academic session. Hundreds of students of Oyo State origin under the platform of Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU) on Monday alleged that Oyo State Government under the leadership of Senator Abiola Ajimobi has “duped” no fewer than 20,000 students from the state in the name of bursary. The students made this declaration when they protested against hike in school fees, unpaid bursary and persistent strike by lecturers in tertiary institutions owned by the state government on Monday in Ibadan, the state capital. FOSSU’s National President, Azeez Sharafudeen while speaking with journalists during the protest that started at Total Garden and ended at the state Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan, said that the state government was not ready to pay the bursary yet it “dubiously asked our students to purchase the form online with N1,200 per head thereby generating millions of naira”. Sharafudeen while speaking further threatened that there will also mass mobilisation if the government fails to attend to their needs within 21 days. Read the full statement… Press release from the National Secretariat of the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union [FOSSU], on Monday, 29th of October, 2018 over the underfunding of educational sector and perpetual strike actions in all state-owned tertiary institutions and the non-payment of indigenous students bursary/grant. Thousands of indigenous students across the country gathered today to protest against bad educational policy in the state , unjust skyrocketing of tuitions fee, incessant strike action in all state-owned institutions, over-crowding of students in lecture rooms, imposing of illegal levies on students in the name of generating IGR for state-owned schools, semi-privatization of state-owned institutions, lack of teaching materials & aids in schools, lack of infrastructures in school and failure to fulfill the signed MOU over the payment of students bursary and other issues on education in the state. Today, thousands of indigenous students in the state have resolved to come out in a well-applauded democratic measure to inform the general public, the plight bedevilling the state of education and students’ well-being in the state. Today’s commitment has taken a page in the history of the state, yes! The planned mass demonstration is dedicated to every mind, who continued to feel unjust, discomfort and not pleased with the provocative circumstances ceaselessly visiting the educational sectors of the state, where the human resources and the material values hosting the academic terrain scathe continued to suffer setbacks, as the degradation keeps resurfacing in the system. Entire students of the state under the leadership of Comrade Azeez Akano stating categorically right from inception into office as National President has been proving to be resolute, radical and coordinated wing of students movement. This has provided us with enormous opportunity to maintain our cordial affairs with the APC – led government of the state, regardless of unwelcoming treatment we continue to receive at our ends. It’s considered imperative to inform the members of public society and the international community as the derelict state of education calls for public concerns. The government of the state under the leadership of Governor Abiola Ajimobi in recent time, as part of its ability to enliven the inclusion of students’ responsibilities in government, by charting a template to ensure students enjoy the bursary scheme and scholarship grants, but we can say, this was only done to defraud unsuspecting numbers of students who applied through online – registration with sum of one thousand two hundred naira [N1,200] as processes involved were found to be fraudulent and it was an act to extort students. Even from the record, 2012 was the last year, students’ bursary/grants were included in the budget of the state, though was done with series of manipulations and irregularities, where bonafide and genuine students of the state who duly registered as a member of FOSSU were unable to appear in the beneficiary list. The spinning out of this wicked situation seems to be reflecting in the present consideration giving to the bursary scheme by the state government, Education sector, bursary scheme and scholarship grant as a major benefit that integrates and includes students into governance has hence facing unfavourable treatment by the state government. Recently, the umbrella body of all indigenous students of Oyo State, FOSSU, has rightly raised alarm on the double-standard play out of the state government over its READ MORE @ http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/ajimobi-duped-20000-students-in-name-of-bursary-fossu/ Lala, Mynd4

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, said the 22 APC governors had agreed to work for the All Progressives Congress’ victory in 2019. He spoke to newsmen after a meeting the governors had with the party leadership on Thursday. Okorocha said, “We just held a meeting with the Chairman and we’ve resolved that in support of the party that we are going to have free and fair primaries. “Everybody will be given equal chance to participate in the primaries which will be transparent, free and fair. “And we have adopted both direct and indirect and most of the states are going for indirect primaries, but for the president it is going to be direct primaries. “So we have all resolved and to assure Nigerians that we are ready for the primaries and we are ready for the main election as decided by NEC and we are sure that come 2019 APC shall have the victory. “We are calling on all our supporters to support the party. The 22 governors and the National Working Committee are working together and we have resolved to make sure that we get victory for the party come 2019.” On crises in some states over direct and indirect primaries, the governor said, “Like the NEC made it clear that the parties will decide at every state level what they want, either direct or indirect primaries. “Normally, you would know that our party is even a peaceful party. It is the most peaceful party in Nigeria right now where there are no schemishes and scuffles. If you are looking at other parties, you would know there is no party at all. “So, these minor complains here and there are expected because even in a family you have it. The NEC has declared that we are going to have direct and indirect primaries and the party at the state level will decide what type of primary to adopt.” Governor Nasir EL-Rufai of Kaduna State, in his remarks, said: “There is no way one hundred percent of the party will agree to one thing. “There will always be some that will disagree but the decision of NEC is that the majority of the state Executive Committee decided on the mode of primaries. “And the Kaduna State that you mentioned which I’m the Governor by the grace of God, the majority of the State Executive Committee decided on indirect primaries. If one or two members don’t agree, that’s off; that is not the decision of NEC.” More details below; http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/what-okorocha-el-rufai-said-after-apc-governors-meeting/ Mynd4, Lalasticlala, Seun

The federal government has hinted that President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2019 budget to the National Assembly when the legislature reconvenes in September. Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, explained that this was to restore the January to December budget cycle. “Our aspirations is that we want to meet the requirements of the law to submit it by September but as you know the National assembly is itself away on recess and they resume by September”, she told Daily Trust. The Minister disclosed that the N1.56 trillion spent by the federal government on capital projects was the highest amount ever spent on capital projects in the history of Nigeria. According to her, the federal government released 60 per cent of the total N2.2 trillion budgeted for capital projects in 2017, the highest value ever. The Minister said the 2017 budget did well as the country executed 100 per cent of the personnel component, ensuring that salaries and pensions were paid, including pension arrears. Ahmed noted that despite the fact that production did not go up to the 2.3 million barrels per day projected for the year, oil and gas sector revenue hit 95 per cent largely due to increase in oil price in the international market. “Non-oil revenue performance was not as high as we had expected. “Because of the recession, a lot of businesses were struggling and couldn’t perform as they should and getting taxes will be as a result of the profit declared by companies. “Taxes collected are also indicative of the performance of businesses in the economy,” the Minister said. Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State on Tuesday hosted an indigene of the state, Galadima Israel Zakari, the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, JAMB, best overall candidate at the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME. Shettima received Zakari (from Biu local government area) and his mother, Jummai, at the Government House in Maiduguri, the state capital. The governor said he was excited about the young man’s achievement. “On behalf of the government and people of Borno, I specially thank the JAMB king for making us proud. Words are not enough to express my joy. “Despite our challenges, our children are doing well. We beseech Almighty God to continue to keep and bless them”, he said. Shettima announced a 5-year scholarship for Zakari’s tertiary education to the tune of N5million. He directed the Commissioner for Higher Education, Usman Jaha to raise the cheque to cover upfront payment of tuition, accommodation, books and maintenance at Covenant University in Ogun State where the student has already gained admission for a degree in Electronics Engineering. The governor explained that since he will be completing his tenure in 2019, he has approved payment upfront in order to ensure that Zakari, who also made nine distinction at this year’s West African Examination Council (WAEC), does not have to follow-up on any tuition at the State Scholarship Board. His words: “Israel, as his mother has told us, was raised as an orphan. The mother lost her husband who was a Major in the Nigerian Army about 14 years ago and she singlehandedly raised three children. “Israel is the second of her children. She works in Lagos as a Banker, we don’t have to make her travel all the way to Maiduguri again to pursue any payment. “She has done her part by raising a child with excellence and that child has made Borno State very proud. It’s our turn to support him. “I will suggest that the mother pays all the fees upfront to avoid any tuition increase in future. I am particular about Israel because he was raised as an orphan”. The mother couldn’t hold back tears as she thanked the Borno governor. Jummai recalled that she attended University of Maiduguri before getting married. Dailyschoolgist.com.ng reports that Zakari led the top best seven candidates, according to an official release by JAMB. A BECE candidate identified as Ezra Danjuma said he missed three papers because his school, Government Secondary School, Exland in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area was among the schools closed down because of the recent attacks. “I registered for 10 subjects but could not write three papers because we had to runway from our community when the Fulani herdsmen attacked us. My father was killed in the process,“ he said. Also candidates in Barkin Ladi LGA were said to have missed literature, geography, agric science, computer science, animal husbandry, additional mathematics and data processing and marketing examinations due to the crisis. It also warned that candidates who fall victims will have a different result on its database. The Statement added that, ”That’s a scam. There’s no such thing as ‘upgrade’ of result. They can concoct a result & give to you but it’ll be different from what we have on our database. ”A lot of their victims have lost their jobs & turned back at Embassies during verification. Students of Lagos State public schools are yet to access their results, two weeks after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). A source from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, who pleaded anonymity, told The Nation that the non-release of the result, may not be unconnected to the non-completion of the payment of the examination fees by the Lagos State government. The Lagos State government pays the WASSCE fees for SS3 pupils of its public schools “Some public school students have not seen their results because the process to pay the money was incomplete. But they are working on it,” the source said. However, the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Demianus Ojijeogu, insisted the result had been released. “It has been released. The result is online already. Richard Akindele, the lecturer dismissed from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) over sexual misconduct has claimed that Monica Osagie, the student involved in the controversy, seduced him with nude photos. According to New Telegraph, Akindele said this in his reply to a query issued to him by the university. “I know the lady in the audio recording to be an MBA regular student. I recall sometimes in November 2017 when she came to my office in company of some of her other MBA students/colleagues to inform me they failed a course that I took with another lecturer and pleaded that they should be upgraded,” he reportedly wrote. “But I informed them that it was not possible because the result has been submitted and approved by the department. They left my office, but the lady returned alone to my office some few minutes after they had left begging me to upgrade her to an ‘A’. “She confessed that she did not fail the course, but that she had two other courses in the Department that she failed (not any of which that I am involved) but that she would need an “A” in my own course to boost her CGPA to get to an average of 50 to enable her obtain an MBA degree. “I promptly turned down her request. She knelt down and held my legs pretending to be begging me, but was actually romancing me. I shouted at her to stop her madness, but she immediately stood up, raised her gown up to cover her face and I noticed she was not wearing any pant. “I was afraid she could shout to attract other people and it may be difficult for me to defend myself of sexual assault. So I had to gently tell her to calm down and that we will do it five times on another day and place to which she agreed and gently left my office. I had to do that to save myself from any possible accusation of sexual assault which may be difficult to prove if she had shouted on that day. Of course, she attempted calling me at other times and seeing me after that day, but I kept avoiding her. “Since then, she kept sending messages to me regularly describing how good she is in bed and how badly she needs to sleep with me and get an “A” in the course, all of which I resisted.” Akindele insisted that the day the leaked phone conversation was recorded, he deliberately played along. He further claimed that two unknown vehicles with unidentified men and a lady suspected to be Moncia, trailed him from OAU campus to Moro Campus, where the MBA programme was being run. “On that fateful morning, I left my office on campus for Centre for Distance Learning (CDL), Moro to go for the MBA lecture. As I was driving out of the university, I noticed two vehicles following. “I was somehow scared and wondered what the occupants in the cars were up to. While still wondering, my phone rang and it was the lady in question calling, but I did not pick. When the phone rang the third time, I picked and sensing danger with cars behind me, I decided to play along with her request, and that was what led me to demand five times of sex and for her to come to my office. “I have evidence and proof that she naked herself and harassed me sexually and I have a naked picture she sent to my WhatsApp contact, pressing that she wanted to have sexual intercourse with me. I have known this lady to be a bad behaved lady and as if she is a psychotic person,” he added. OAU had set up a panel to investigate the allegations levelled against Akindele, who went into hiding after the scandal broke. He was eventually sacked on June 20. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Council Head of Public Affairs, Damianus Ojijeogu during an interview on Saturday disclosed that the results of the 2018 WASSCE for School Candidates will be released in 45 days. The council, he said, was satisfied with the conduct of the just concluded examination for school candidates nationwide. The WASSCE for school candidates commenced on March 27, 2018 and was concluded on May 15, 2018. Below was the speech made by WAEC “We are indeed happy that the examination was conducted in a hitch-free manner. Right now, we have commenced coordination, briefing and subsequently, marking,” he said. “We are looking at releasing the results in 45 days or earlier than that time. “It has been the commitment of the council to always give quality service delivery in line with the head of the national office, Olu Adenipekun’s promise to reduce the waiting days from 90 days to 45 days.” Ojijeogu said technology had been deployed to some marking venues to assist in scanning the scripts. He said that this would facilitate the marking of the scripts and impact positively in the early release of the results. The council had also said it has deployed technology that would help detect malpractice in its objective questions. From the report above, we at Dailyschoolgist.com.ng can guarantee all students that their results will be released first week of July. The exact date will be communicated to candidates and the general public later. SOURCE: https://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/waec-release-20182019-waec-mayjune-exam-results-1st-week-july/

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has gotten Federal government support to prevent leakages of examinations questions. The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, approved N133 million for the purchase of infrastructure and pieces of equipment for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, disclosed this when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the Council’s meeting in Abuja. He said the purchase of the Computer Based Test facilities would enable JAMB take total control of its examination processes to avoid leakages that had hitherto characterised the conduct of examinations by the board. “JAMB had ran their tests for people who seek admissions to universities using computer based testing agencies and this has been attended by leakages over time and in order to stop all of that JAMB has begun to set up their own infrastructure for conducting those examinations. “While they have realized that they had not sufficiently covered the ground they have requested, as they did today, for government to buy-up one of the CBT organization for N133 million. “They bought over the infrastructure, equipment and the building “So, the effort is that JAMB will want to take total control of all these examination processes in order to avoid leakages that had in the past attended their own examinations”, Shehu added. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has lauded the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife for relieving a lecturer, Prof. Richard Akindele of his duty for involving in a sex scandal. DAILYSCHOOLGIST.COM.NG reports that the Obafemi Awolowo University sacked Professor Richard Akindele for allegedly demanding sex from Monica Osagie to upgrade her mark. The NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, made this remark in a statement on Thursday in Enugu. Okereafor said that NANS believed that sacking the lecturer was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to the fight against all forms of Human Rights abuse within government and its institutions. He said that it would serve as a deterrent to other lecturers, who might be nurturing similar habit or already indulging in such misconduct on campuses across the federation. Okereafor said that NANS implored the university to as a Matter of urgency, prosecute the lecturer in a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full wrath of the law. According to him, NANS is also calling on the female students to shun indecent dressing within and outside the campuses so that they can always protect the dignity of motherhood. “The leadership of the over 40.1 million Nigerian students both at home and the diaspora under the auspices of NANS, salutes the authority of OAU for its decision,’’ he said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed June 26 for the 2018 admission policy meeting to kick-start the next admission process into the nation’s tertiary institutions. Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. Benjamin said, “The main reason for the meeting is to define all modalities for admission of qualified candidates into the nation’s tertiary institutions for the 2018/2019 academic session. “The board has concluded arrangements for this year’s admission policy meeting with all stakeholders in the education sector. “This kind of meeting is to give room for contributions as well as ensure fairness and equity in the conduct of the 2018/2019 admission process. “We are expecting in attendance all heads of tertiary institutions across the country. “We shall be convening this meeting, for the first time, in the South-West, Osun precisely. “All the South-West governors have been invited coupled with other critical stakeholders. “To ensure that there is no misrepresentation of facts or information, there will be a live coverage of the meeting on NTA from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m, so that Nigerians can follow the proceedings,” he said. Benjamin said that in addition, Nigerians would also be able to get first-hand information on how the admission would be conducted, especially the requirements needed. He assured Nigerians that the board would continue to ensure it brought on board innovations and reforms that would give the candidates an edge over admission process challenges. “Our determined objective is to ensure that every prospective candidate is treated fairly and equally under a transparent platform. “We will also continue to strive to open up the space for healthy competition. “As it was done in 2017, this year’s admission process will also be conducted through the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS). “This system eliminates all human interference in the admission exercise, where candidates are selected purely on the basis of defined criteria,” Benjamin said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has refuted the claim in some quarters that its database suffered leakages due to the activities of suspected hackers infiltrating its system. The Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, told newsmen on Monday during an interactive session in Benin City that although the examination body had recorded several attempts by some individuals to divulge questions prepared for candidates in the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination over the years, such attempts had been in vain. He said, “As far as JAMB is concerned, I have not found any case of a breakthrough. No matter how clever they think they are, we are ahead of them. “One of the reasons why I led a delegation here myself is to see whether there is any evidence of a breakthrough. You can ask any of the security agencies handling the matter; it will tell you. “We have not been able to find one case of success. What we are treating are attempts and it is because we are proactive that we are picking their attempts. “When people try to break into our BVN, they did not get any questions because our questions were not there. They were able to break into a decoy that we created and they were not able to do anything.” He said, “We keep promising them (hackers) that if they can get us one question of ours that is genuine, we will pay them a lot of money. Once an attempt is made, we will not treat it as just an attempt. We shall go after them and ensure they are arrested.” Speaking on the board’s partnership with security agencies in the recruitment of personnel, Oloyede faulted claims that JAMB had become a money-spinner for the Federal Government. “I was not there. So, I am not in a position to tell you what they did with the funds. What I know is that the government gave me an assignment. I have completed the assignment and the surplus must be returned to the owner. “Some persons are asking questions: Are we a money-generating agency? Must we go and steal the money simply because the money was there? Sometimes, I do not understand the logic of some people. They prefer that the money is generated and wasted,” he added.
