The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Is’haq Oloyede has described the huge difference between the revenue generated by the board in 2017 and that of his predecessors as a reflection of chronic corruption in the system. He pointed out that since the inception of the admission body over 40 years ago, the total money generated were just N52m (fifty-two million naira) while the board, under his leadership, generated N9bn in 2017 only. Oloyede made this disclosure in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, while speaking as Lead Speaker during the 3rd Colloquium to celebrate Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s birthday, organised by Raufnomics Transformation of Osun, a socio-political group. He also explained that the downward review of JAMB cut-off mark is a necessity caused by the need to curb inequality, by giving level playing ground to applicants. “Nigeria is dominated by thieves at the helms of affairs, I mean certified thieves; let me talk about JAMB for instance, since over forty years that JAMB has been established, the total money generated before we came in is N52m (Fifty two million naira) “After we finished our examinations for 2017, we generated N9bn, in which I returned the total sum of N7.8m to the Federal Government. “Members of the National Assembly marveled at this feat, they wondered how I came about the figure. “For this year also, I have realised over N9bn,” he declared. Oloyede, who spoke on the theme: “Functional education as a tool for national development and a gateway to freedom” noted that education remains the bedrock of every nation. He argued that education is essentially the main process through which a society regenerates itself, and hands down norms, cultures, and also generates wealth. “You don’t need to use bomb to destroy a nation, just lower the quality of education and allow cheating by students in examinations. “Education, being the art of acquisition and utilisation of knowledge is also an instrument in training individuals purposely to make them socially responsible. “Functional education must geared towards the liberation of humanity from poverty and misery. “All in all, education must be functional before it is adaptable.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/registrar-oloyede-reveals-exposed-corruption-jamb/

Ahead of the three years anniversary of the Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration in Enugu State, students from all the tertiary institutions in the state under the auspices of Gburugburu Student Support Group (GSSG), have unanimously endorsed the governor for a second term in office. Rising from a well attended solidarity rally in Enugu in appreciation of peace and good governance in the state, the jubilant students who later converged at the Government House to identify with Gov. Ugwuanyi said they were elated at his sterling performance in spite of the state’s meager resources. Reconfirming their award on Gov. Ugwuanyi as the “Most Student-Friendly Governor in Nigeria”, the students added that “we have taken it upon ourselves to be in the fore-front for the realization of anything that will return you to the Lion Building come 2019”. Presenting the student’s stance, the group’s Chairman, Comrade Chidi Ilogebe, promised the governor that they will deliver 150,000 verifiable votes for him in 2019, saying: “Be rest assured that our total support for you is unflinching”. He disclosed that they “collapsed every other student structures (Kporakpo inclusive) into GSSG to give you (Ugwuanyi) the maximum support you need because you deserve it”, stressing that “this we will achieve through our programmes, community-based outreaches, social media awareness, school visitations and sensitizations”. “Your Excellency, you can’t imagine the joy in our hearts whenever we go out of the state and engage our contemporaries from other states on issues of governance, and the most performing states, Enugu will always stand out as the standard. And this is possible because your sterling performance is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf”. “This is the reason why we have greatly tasked ourselves, held series of meetings, travelled down to the various wards, identified like minds and empowered them on the need to support the re- election bid of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi not just with voice support but with their PVCs, because one good term deserves another”, the students stated. Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was overwhelmed by the large number of enthusiastic students at the event, thanked them for their support, goodwill, solidarity and prayers and promised to address the issues they raised regarding their involvement in moving the state forward. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Friday disclosed that the principle of its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, is that government business can always be done irrespective of the amount available for such task. The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this disclosure to DAILY SCHOOL GIST when called upon to react to the perception of JAMB in some quarters as a revenue-generating agency. According to him, “His (Oloyede’s) principle is that government business can always be done as nobody has said JAMB is a revenue generating agency. “If you as an individual, your father sends you with say N5000, and you find out that you could only expend N2000 for what you were sent to do, are you saying you’ll throw the N3000 into the ocean. A good child will return the money back to his father. And when you return that money, does it mean that the child is a revenue generating child?” Benjamin asked. It would be recalled that Oloyede had earlier this month confirmed that the board realized N8.4 billion from the sale of 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, applications. According to him, “The board realized N8.4 billion from the sale of 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) applications. People actually thought that N5,500 that we collect for UTME application goes straight to JAMB purse. “They calculate that by the number of candidates that registered for the exam and arrive at a figure. But, in actual sense, less than that enters the purse of JAMB. Others are for expenditures that are needed for the success of the exam.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/jamb-speaks-revenue-generating-agency-reveals-registrar-oloyedes-principle/

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Friday said the amount being collected for application forms of those seeking to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, has not been changed for about 10 years, stressing that the present management of the board has not added N1 to the fee. The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, when asked by DAILY SCHOOL GIST to react to the call by the House of Representatives for the slashing of Jamb fee by half, emphasised that the examination will still measure up to standard even if candidates pay N500 for application forms. Recall that the House, while adopting a motion by James Faleke (APC, Lagos) urged the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that the cost of the other ‘ancillary forms’ for changes are free or at the very barest minimum of N500. But speaking with our correspondent, Benjamin pointed out that government business will always be done even if those seeking to write the tertiary institutions’ entrance examination were asked to pay N500, assuring that quality wouldn’t still be compromised. He was quick to add that under the present Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, much of what was realised from the sale of forms were remitted to the government, above what has been the case in the past 30 years. His words, “For close to 10 years, that money has not been increased but we are an agency of government. We are not averse to any directive of government. If government says it should be 1000, we don’t have any problem with that. It is government money. “Of late, whatever we generate, we remit almost a chunk of it back to government. If government says we should charge N500, we’ll charge N500. Government will always have a way of doing its business. “We don’t want people to have the impression that the present management increased the charges. What candidates are paying for JAMB has been there years before the present Registrar came on board, and since he came on board he has not added N1 to any of those charges rather he has returned more to government coffers than what was returned in the past 30 years.” “Quality of the exam is not a function of money. It’s a function of commitment, dedication, transparency and how committed the staff and management are. “You can give them 100 billion and the quality will not even be up to what it is today. Nobody has said JAMB is a revenue generating agency.” SOURCE: https://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/jamb-tells-will-work-post-utme-forms-sell-n500/

The House of Representatives has urged the federal ministry of education to review downward the cost of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) by about 50% from the current N7, 500.00 to not more than N3, 000.00. The House, while adopting a motion by James Faleke (APC, Lagos) urged the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that the cost of the other ‘ancillary forms’ for changes must be free or at the very barest minimum of N500. These decisions were taken after a unanimous endorsement of the motion, in order to make university and other tertiary education accessible and affordable. While leading debate on the motion, Fakele noted that the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) was said to have remitted the sum of N7.8 billion to the Federal Government being excess of the N12 billion made from sales of Unified Tertiary Examinations (UTME) application forms for University Admission in 2017 at the rate of N7, 500.00 each, excluding incomes from the sales of other forms such as Change of Course Forms and Change of University Forms at the rate of N5, 000.00 each. He said an estimated 250,000 candidates purchased the UTME forms bringing the income from sales of the forms to estimated sum of N2.4bn per year. The lawmaker further noted that the cost does not include the Post UTME Examinations that are conducted by Universities at an average cost of N2, 500 (Two Thousand Five Hundred Naira only) per candidate excluding the expenses made on logistics. Faleke said he was aware that JAMB had a surplus of N7 billion budget in 2017. According to him “the increase in the number of Universities from 12 at inception of JAMB in 1798, with less than 50,000 candidates to over 400 tertiary institutions with more than 1.7 million candidates writing the exams and indices shows only about 50% of those who wrote the examinations were admitted in the universities as at 2017. “Further aware that JAMB as a government agency is not set up for profit making but to promote educational development of the young citizens in pursuit of their professional career; “Worried that the proliferation of Universities to 120, 83 Polytechnics, 82 Colleges of Education and other Tertiary Institutions under JAMB purview is portraying it as a profit making venture. “I was alarmed at the allegation of the huge sum of money missing from the vaults, burning of scratch cards, lending out money made from sales of application forms, conversion of proceeds from sales of application forms to loans and Image ’empowerment’ funds to private individuals and fictitious by stories by the officials of the board” “That being the first time such an amount is being returned to government coffers by any government agency, the management of JAMB deserves commendation for upholding the Federal Government’s Anti-Corruption policies. “Believes that education, being a pivot upon which relational development of the nation rests, should be made available to citizens at the barest minimum cost” The motion was thereafter unanimously adopted and referred to the committee on basic education led by Hon. Zakari Mohammed (APC, Kwara) to ensure compliance and report back in two weeks. SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/jamb-reps-demand-reduction-utme-fee-n3000/

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said that it had set May 26 for rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for more than 12,000 candidates across the country. The Board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. This category of candidates, he explained, are those whose biometrics were not captured during the initial period of the UTME in March. He said: “It would also include those, who are yet to see their results since the end of the examinations in March till date and have not been involved in any form of malpractice. “It will also include those, who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices.’’ According to him, “there are centres that were cancelled because of suspicious activities but the board was unable to identify the actual culprits. However, he said that those, who were involved and caught in illicit acts and centres where a case of malpractice has been established against them would not partake in the rescheduled examinations. He advised candidates, who might have fallen into any of the categories qualified for the examination to print their e-slips from Monday, May 21. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has confirmed that it realized N8.4 billion from the sale of forms for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). JAMB records indicate that at the end of the two-month application window, it registered 1,662,763 candidates for the 2018 exam, less than the 1,718,425 candidates who registered for the exam within a month and two week period in 2017, indicating a 3.2 percent decrease. The Board had remitted N7.8 billion into the Federation Account, a figure running short of revenue realized last year from UTME sales. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who confirmed the figure to newsmen in Abuja on Friday, said that it made other payments to pin vendors and Computer Based Test (CBT) centres for mock exams and other services. “The board realized N8.4 billion from the sale of 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) applications. People actually thought that N5,500 that we collect for UTME application goes straight to JAMB purse. “They calculate that by the number of candidates that registered for the exam and arrive at a figure. But, in actual sense, less than that enters the purse of JAMB. Others are for expenditures that are needed for the success of the exam,” he said. loyede, however, declined comment on the amount that would be remitted into the Federation Account, even though he had earlier hinted that remittance into the account would be same as last year. Mrs Monica Osagie, the student at the centre of the sex-for-mark scandal rocking the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has opened up to defend her decision to record her telephone conversation with her lecturer, Prof Richard Akindele. Prof. Akindele was said to have demanded five rounds of sex in exchange of exam marks. As a result of report presented by the panel set up by the school to investigate the matter, Prof Akindele has been asked to proceed on an indefinite suspension. According to the panel report, only the embattled lecturer honoured its invitation while the lady neither showed up before the panel to defend her case nor wrote a formal complaint to the institution to defend the leaked audio. Speaking through the founder, Women Advocates Research and documentation Centre, Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Monica who gave the activist the mandate to speak for her on the matter said she hasn’t done anything wrong and is unapologetic about what she had done. She said, “I think society should focus on what really happened, and whether such happens in higher institutions of learning and not about what she did.” Afolabi claimed that the university did not at any point invite Miss Osagie to face the panel. She challenged the university to bring evidence that she was formally invited by any means to appear before the panel. “Before the matter went viral, the university was aware of it and they did not do anything. If the case did not go viral, the university probably would have not done anything and it would have been swept under the carpet. “I think that we should focus more on whether the act of that professor amounts to sexual harassment, whether it was a breach of the school’s code of conduct, whether it was a breach of terms of contract for lecturers or whether he abused the relationship that should exist between lecturers and students. “Let the university do what they are supposed to do by giving her proper invitation. They have all her records because she is their student. The panel has never invited her, so when the panel invites her today, she would come. “she didn’t release the audio. She got the evidence and it was given to one or two people when she was seeking for help. So definitely one of them released the audio, and she cannot be blamed for it.” Asked whether Miss Osagie has been threatened, Afolabi stated that there has not been any threat made against her, “We are not comfortable with the university saying they invited her when they didn’t invite her. Her name is already out, the whole world is aware so we cannot say because of security and safety, we won’t allow the truth to prevail.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/sex-for-mark-student-monica-osagie-finally-opens-up/

@ DailySchoolGist Students of the Polytechnic Ibadan at the weekend expressed concern over the last Friday’s attack by suspected cultists during the school’s matriculation ceremony, urging management to beef up security around the campuses. DAILY SCHOOL GIST learnt that some suspected cult members had on Friday launched an attack on the institution during the matriculation ceremony of ND1 and HND1 students where some students were said to be injured. One of the students who asked not to be named while speaking with journalists urged the management of the institution to bring the perpetrators to book. She said, “I never expected this kind of stage drama. The school is not even safe for us as students. “Yesterday was supposed to be a day of joy for me but it ended up been a day when I can never forget. The management should be able to bring those responsible to book so that they can be used as an example to others who are also threading this path.” Another student, Thomas Samuel, while speaking said, “The fight started through an argument. I was about going to take pictures with someone when I heard some persons arguing, and before I knew it, I saw two of those guys running and they came back with two different axes in their hands, threatening to kill themselves. It was after this that another party came and they started shooting sporadically into the air and people ran helter-skelter for their life.” “I was shocked when I heard the sound of gunshot because that would be my first time witnessing that kind of scenario.” Daniel James in his own said “The school security is nothing to write home about. How will the school security whom do not have a cutlass not to talk of having a gun face hoodlums who are armed? The school should be able to do the needful so that the varsity can be peaceful as we now live in fear.” But, the institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Alhaji Soladoye Adewole, while assuring the students of their protection said investigations are still going on to unravel what transpired during the attack. Adewole said, “Though investigations are ongoing, what we need now is for them to be unmasked so that we can know the next step.” “We never expected such to happen as we all know that yesterday was for the matriculation ceremony and the school is open for everybody to access where the family of those been matriculated are present but we know we only matriculated the ND1 and the HND1. “We are working on the security as we have had meetings with the Rector and the Chief Security Officer. I want the students to know that we can’t allow police officers to come into the school anyhow. We can’t build police stations inside the school because we don’t want what happened in UI to happen in our school when the Commissioner of Police together with the past Student Union Government burnt down a mobile police station in front of the University of Ibadan.” “The School security and the Police are working tirelessly to fish out those who have done the evil and we will make sure that the right punishment is been given to them.” “I urge all students to stay at alert and be ready to report anything to the right quarters as we will be very glad to do needful as its our right to fight against cultism in our environment.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/confusion-cultists-take-ibadan-poly-injure-many-students/

A lecturer at the department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, Prof. Richard Akindele, who is at the centre of a sex-for-mark allegation, has maintained sealed lips. DAILY SCHOOL GIST got Akindele on phone after several efforts to hear his side of the story but rebuffed the reporter. “What is your issue! What is your issue!” Akindele responded violently after our reporter introduced himself as a journalist. He thereafter dropped the call abruptly. Several calls put through to him later were not answered. DAILY SCHOOL GIST recalls that a telephone conversation involving the lecturer and the student was posted on social media platforms on April 9, where the female student accused him of demanding sex-for-marks. The yet to be identified female student, had called the Professor to inquire about his earlier demand for sex to pass her in the lecturer’s course that she supposedly failed. The lecturer responded by telling the student that she would repeat the exam in the next academic session since she had refused to “take the opportunity” he offered her to have sex with him. Meanwhile, as the media was awash with the report, which generated huge reactions amongst Nigerians, the university management through the Vice- chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede on Wednesday in a press statement said the university had set up an investigation panel to unravel individuals involved in the mess. “I wish to assure the general public that Obafemi Awolowo University has zero tolerance for sexual harassment. The University considers sexual harassment as a serious offence contrary to its Code of Conduct for the University Community and against the Anti-sexual Harassment Policy of the University. It is totally and morally reprehensible, and the University will never condone such act by any staff or student. “Once again, I wish to reiterate that no one found culpable of this serious misconduct of sexual harassment will go unpunished”, Ogunbodede had said. The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife, Osun State, has queried professor Richard Akindele, who was accused of demanding sex from a female student. He was said to have demanded the sex to upgrade a female student’s poor result. This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju, when he spoke on Wednesday during a radio programme on Rave FM in Osogbo, the state capital. According to him, investigation had commenced already into the allegation against the don. The PRO said, “We have put machinery in motion to ascertain the veracity of the claims and identify the characters involved. “As I am talking to you now, the management has taken a position which we will be working on now. “On the day that the audio was leaked, the vice chancellor and other principal officers of the university acted, including the legal director of the university. “We set up a committee and the vice chancellor gave the committee one week to submit its report. After that, we will know what to do. “The incident happened last year. We have been calling her (the student’s) line, but she is not responding to her calls again. “We learnt that she confided in someone that she did not want the appointment of the man (lecturer) to be terminated because of her case. “The panel has been set up and query has been given to the man; but we need somebody to come up that she was the one that was sexually harassed and the person is not in sight.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/sex-for-marks-see-what-oau-have-done-to-professor-akindele/

The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, has declared that it would not be held liable for any loss of items by candidates coming for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, due to begin tomorrow, March 9, 2018. The JAMB’s spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, stated this in an exclusive chat with DAILY SCHOOL GIST on Thursday, advising candidates to check the internet for list of items they are not supposed to come with to the examination centres. According to him, “You are not supposed to come with anything to the exam centre. So loss of items does not concern JAMB. “How can a candidate carry his or her load from the house to exam centres and if same goes missing, he come complaining to JAMB, how should we be expected to sort that? “In the press conference we did yesterday, we outlined the list of banned items. You are not supposed to come there with anything,” Benjamin said. DAILY SCHOOL GIST had earlier reported that the following items would not be allowed into the examination centres: Wrist watches, Pen/biro, Mobile phones or similar electronic devices, Spy reading glasses which should be scrutinized, Calculators or similar electronic devices, USB,CD, Hard disks and/or similar storage devices, Books or any reading/writing material, Cameras, Recorders, Microphones, Ear pieces, Ink/pen readers,Smart lenses, Smart rings/jewellery, Smart buttons and Bluetooth devices should be avoided. Candidates for the 2018 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) have ahead of the tomorrow’s exams called for transparency in admission process. The Computer-Based Test (CBT) examination is scheduled to hold between Friday, March 9 and Monday, March 19 nationwide. Some candidates, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at a Computer Based Test (CBT) centre on Thursday said they were optimistic that the 2018 exercise would end in their favour. One of the candidates, identified as Lucy Ibrahim said that she was writing the examinations for the second time, adding that her level of optimism remained unshaken. According to her, it is not the scores that concerns her but the struggle for admission into her university of choice. “I scored 231 last year, but I believe that I will score higher this time. “But my prayer is for my school of choice to admit me this year. “I am from Kaduna and I applied for Mass Communication in ABU. “I just hope that the process is transparent and fair, so that a good percentage of us can get the admission this year,’’ Ibrahim said. Similarly, Chibuke Okafor, another candidate told NAN that his level of preparedness was high enough to give him the score he needed to make his admission dream come true. He, however, alleged that the entire admission process was discouraging and fraught with corruption. According to him, the level of corruption in some schools would not allow fairness in the entire admission process. Also, another candidate, Okafor said that with the new cut-off mark of 120, some schools would still frustrate the system by making it difficult for many eligible candidates. similarly, Patrick Adamu, prayed for the exercise to be hitch-free, especially from network disruption. He also wished that the exercise begin on schedule Meanwhile, a student, Mercy Obi, who commended JAMB for introducing innovations to enhance the system, urged various schools to emulate the board’s desire to make things easier for candidates. She said: “Most times, you find out that the challenges that come up are not from JAMB but from schools. “This is because when JAMB gives admission to a candidate, the school may likely not admit such candidate, even if you meet up all requirements. “Some of us, who have no one to fight for us or money to spend to gain admission, will continue to write until luck finally shines on us’’. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has given reason the results of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME, scheduled to begin on Friday, March 9, to March 17 will not be released immediately. The board said to review the activities of the candidates and to minimise the number of cancellations of result, it will not be released as it did in 2017. The registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this during a press conference titled “Conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination” in Abuja on Wednesday. Oloyede said, “We want to monitor everything that happens through our CCT cameras. Last year, we proved a point that there is nothing extraordinary in the immediate release of results but we had to cancel some results when we found out what happened in some centres. ”So, if we have to take two or three days to look at the conduct of the candidates before releasing the result so as to minimise cancellation, then we will do so.” Mr. Oloyede further said no computer- based centre is allowed to collect any cash from the candidates. “It is fraudulent to engage in multiple registrations, although the new system of capturing live pictures through cameras instead of scanning of pictures, biometrics capturing of fingers and the order of arrangement of names has curtailed incidences of multiple registration. ”The board is worried about the incessant cases of candidates being defrauded by syndicates, during the registration period. We arrested some of these syndicates. We call on all of you to be on the watch and call on us where such in formation is made available to you. “About 6500 permanent and ad-hoc staff are deployed for the examination and each centre is to be manned by 10 officials. It is necessary to disclose that the board has concluded all arrangement for its activities for the 2019 exercise and a calendar has been released on our site”, the registrar added. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Wednesday said it recorded a decrease in the number of registered candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations in 2018. The Registrar of the Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja. According to him, a total number of 1,662,762 candidates registered for the 2018 UTME, within a period of two months, as against a total of 1,718,425 candidates who registered within one month in 2017. He explained that the decrease of 3.2 per cent was largely as a result of measures put in place by the board to forestall multiple registrations and other unwholesome practices by candidates. Oloyede noted that a total of 367 visually impaired candidates registered for the 2018 examination, as against the 201 candidates of 2017. “The board will continue to provide all necessary support and logistics to the physically challenged candidates in order to encourage them to attain their pursuit for knowledge. “The board recorded a pleasantly high number of candidates for the 2018 UTME examinations from foreign countries. “The board is yet to get the actual statistics from the various embassies, those who applied for the examinations would commence after the local centres have concluded,” he said. The operators of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, have appealed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), to give them a reasonable timeline to factor in its technical capacity in readiness for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which begins this Friday. Speaking under the aegis of The CBT Centre Proprietors Association of Nigeria, they expressed concern about the marching order given by JAMB to the CBT centre owners to download the board’s software on Sunday. The Chairman of the association, Alexander Ogedengbe, speaking to journalists at the end of its one-day seminar on JAMB UTME 2018 ethics, metrics and technicalities, said “we will want them to be aware that the time they mandated us to go and download the browser to use for the examination was very short. “It was less than 24 hours to the mock exam on Sunday morning. There are many people that had to go to church on that day. Because we had to build this country, we obeyed and went to the centre, we believe that in that area, JAMB should be able to improve and give us reasonable time to get it done.” Ogedengbe stated that for that kind of exercise, the board should have considered the de-merits as well. “They ought to co-opt two of our own technical teams into their own so that while they are trying to look at the advantages, they are also looking at the disadvantages to us. The JAMB browser didn’t function at our centre. “Last year, after the examination, we believed that we had done our own part very well but JAMB authority came up to say that it was marred by malpractices but the observers adjudged the exam to be malpractice free, so we had to organise the enlightenment programme among ourselves. “We are convinced because the people here are men of integrity who want to contribute their quota to the education development of the country. As operators of CBT, we need to be up and doing through professional ethics of the exam and in the area of technicalities to make it corruption free in Nigeria.” Candidates have already begun receiving their centres online and via email. The House of Representatives on Monday commenced investigation into the disbursement of N23 billion released by the Federal Government to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Chairman, Committee on Tertiary Education of the House, Rep. Suleiman Aminu, requested for the breakdown of the disbursement. He said that the ASUU strike also affected polytechnics and colleges of education. In his presentation, Mr Samson Ugwoke, Chairman, Joint Action Committee of the three non-academic unions of universities, confirmed the release of the N23 billion. He said that the committee set up to oversee the disbursement of the fund, approved 89 per cent for ASUU and 11 per cent for the non-academic staff unions. Ugwoke, however, explained that University of Ilorin and University of Nigeria, Nsukka did not benefit, while University of Lagos got the least allocation. He said that the Minister and Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Education at a meeting held on Sept. 19, 2017 admitted that ASUU hijacked the process of distribution of the fund. He added that they promised to mop-up money for the three non-academic staff unions, with an appeal to the unions to call off the industrial action. Earlier, Mr Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), had argued that most of the demands in 2009 agreement were not implementable as most of the demands were not clear. According to him, the agreement contained many combustible that when touched, would explode. Rasheed added that the “infighting among the four unions will spell doom for the system because students will suffer.” Reacting to the submissions, Mr Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, said that payments were made by the Accountant-General to the universities. According to him, it is just that more of the staff that benefitted belong to ASUU. “Although the time the N23 billion was released, the Federal Government was addressing ASUU strike, but when the money came, the ministry insisted that other unions should be carried along.” Echono, however, assured that the next fund that would be released by the government would be basically released to the non-academic staff in the universities. He confirmed that logistics were being worked out to ensure timely payment of the allowances, but declined to disclose details of the amount to be released and time. In his ruling, Aminu, who presided at the sessions, urged the three striking non-academic staff unions to suspend the nationwide strike while negotiation continues. He also tasked relevant authorities responsible for the release of the funds to expedite action. Aminu explained that the committee intended to ensure five years uninterrupted academic session in the Nigeria’s tertiary education. He also unveiled plans to convey stakeholders’ retreat on the 2009 agreement with the view to sort out grey areas. The committee chairman urged officials of the ministry and leadership of the unions to convene another meeting in the National Assembly on Tuesday. This, he said. was to work out a position paper for the unions to present to their members at the JAC meeting. The Senate chief whip, Olusola Adeyeye, has called for colleges of education and polytechnics in Nigeria to be scrapped. Mr. Adeyeye said this on Tuesday during a JAMB event in Abuja tagged, “Strategic planning on the conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation.” According to the senator, there is no serious future for a society that makes the weakest its teachers. He said this in reference to products from colleges of education and polytechnics. Adeyeye said “The educational structures that gave rise to the institutions such as ‘standard six, grade one, grade two and grade three had already been phased out. “During admission process, the best students go to the universities, second best students go to the polytechnics while others go to colleges of education and such students are expected to be teachers and teach best students. “I have my private fears. I don’t believe God will solve Nigeria’s problem, we are to make it work. If you want to see the future of any society, visit their schools. ”There is no serious future for a society that makes the weakest its teachers.” SOURCE: http://dailyschoolgist.com.ng/why-polytechnics-colleges-of-education-should-be-scrapped-sen-adeyeye/ |
There are so many reasons why you should not trust your course rep but we DailySchoolGist Will Tell you the popular ones. There is no work that has no gain/reward. Anyway, let's just go straight to the topic without wasting any of your time. 1. He Will Tell You That You Had "F" In A Particular Course While You Didn't: This is very rampant in almost all Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria especially state owned Institutions. The course rep does this in order to make the student pay for sorting, immediately you pay, the money goes into his pocket. Lol, it sounds funny right? Immediately he starts telling you to pay fast before your score is being submitted to your department, my brother, think twice, it's likely that he wants to defraud you. Be wise if you do not want to be a victim. It's only those that do not know whatsup that this could happen to. 2. He Will Tell You That You Had A Missing Script While You Did Not: Lol, my brother this is very rampant in state owned Tertiary institutions. This is also equivalent to No.1. This one is very heartbreaking. After writing an exam and your course rep will tell you that you had a missing script. Is that not funny, although it could be true sometimes but you should play wisely. 3. They Can Snatch Your Girl Friend : Lol, is this funny? Course reps can snatch your girlfriend if you are not careful. This is true. Do not doubt any course rep that tells you he can snatch your girlfriend within some weeks. Although it depends on the type of girlfriend you have. Lol, course reps have so many rights to some things. 4. They Might Tell You A Particular Textbook Is 4k While It's Not : This is almost in all schools but it depends on the type of course rep you have as some course reps have the fear of God. They are doing this in order to gain from their work. Although it's not everybody they can do it to because they know many students know whatsup. 5. They Do Get Some Shares And Pocket Money From Some Lecturers : Lol, this is very common in state owned institutions. After course reps finished selling textbooks for lecturers, some of them give them pocket money, not only that but they lecturers do patronize them incase if they fail any of their courses. Remember, some lecturers do not even care whether you fail or not, they don't do patriotism. Summarily, be nice, good, and friendly to your course reps as they can help you in so many cases. Love them but do not treat them like your God, they are all human beings like you. Wherever they do it wrong, correct them and trust me, one day you will be their best friend. Thanks. There are many reasons why candidates fail WAEC exams but am going to list and explain the major reasons. As we all know that WAEC has just released recently written WAEC G.C.E results. It was noted that out of the numbers of candidates that wrote the exam, only 26% of candidates passed English and Mathematic. This is too bad as it shows no form of improvement. Today, we are going to talk about the reasons why most students fail WAEC exams and how to avoid it. The following are the reasons why candidates fail waec exams; 1. LACK OF READING : Yes!, this is the most common factor why candidates fail both WAEC and NECO examinations. The male students are mostly under this category, they are addicted to it. Most of these students does not even care whether they have exams to write, they are always busy on the social medias mostly on facebook, twitter and whatsapp chatting, sending love messages to their girl friends and boy friends. These type of people finds it very hard to read their books, they are always looking for a place to have fun. If you find yourself under the above category, please change your ways, look back and re-think, make a reading timetable for yourself and make sure you follow it accordingly. Paste your reading timetable in your room so that you will not forget to read. Pray to God to let the hunger to read and understand catch you. 2. SHY TO ASK QUESTIONS IN THE CLASS Some students are too fond of this, they are always ashamed to ask questions in order not to be harrassed by the teacher and some of the students. Sometimes i blame some teachers, when a student ask a reasonable question, the teacher will rudely tell the student to sit down and some of the illiterates students in the class will start laughing at the student. When such happens, how would you expect such student and other related students to ask questions. Please teachers, students should be given maximum privilege to ask questions after teaching, you too should also ask them questions based on the topic. The class is like a political gathering whereby people come together to express themselves and achieve an aim. By so doing, i think the shy candidates would not remain dumb to ask questions in the class. 3. BEING IN A HURRY TO WRITE WHILE NOT TOLD TO DO SO Yes!, this is found in most candidates who think they know it all. Immediately answer sheets and question papers are shared, some students had already started writting without the consent of the supervisor/supervisors. What if the exam questions were not in the textbooks/notebooks you red? What would you do? Again, what if the supervisor sees you and decides to write exam malpractice on you? What would you do? Before writting any examination, the first thing that shoul come to your mind is prayer, it's very imporant.. 4. FEAR Another factor is fear, and it's for those who lacks reading. When looking at any student who falls under this category in the examination hall, he/she looks dumb. Before writting any examination, try your best to remove fear, comport yourself very well and pray to God and He shall see you through. 5. IGNORING THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE QUESTION PAPER AND ANSWER SHEET Most students lack the knowledge that instructions on the question paper and answer sheets are being taken serious by the markers. Following and obeying instructions helps increase your marks. Some candidates are very fond of doing what they want with their answer sheets papers. Keep your answer sheets clean. It's very unfortunate that you would see some candidates writting on the Margin of their answer sheets. According to waec, the instruction says "Do Not Write On Either Margin", that rule should be respected. The margin is very useful to the markers because it's the place where marks/scores of such candidate are being alotted. NOTE : some markers reduces the marks of any candidate who writes on the margin. 6. NOT SUBMITTING WHENEVER ASKED TO DO SO All candidates are fond of this, they would be wanting to write everything without even minding whether the supervisor is telling them to submit or not. Some forgot that the supervisor can write against them. Do not forget that whatever the supervisor writes against them would be taken by Waec Board. 7. CENTRES THAT HAS BAD RECORD ON WAEC LIST This is the factor that fails both the intelligent students. This is the situation that causes students to fail no matter what they write. The centre is being regarded as exam malpractice centre. PLEASE TAKE NOTE, before registering in any waec exam centre, try to make enquiry to know if it's a blacklisted centre before proceeding to register with them. Summarily, before writting waec exam, read harder, Remove fear, make enquiries, and lastly but not the list, pray to GOD for guidance. The Lagos State University (LASU) on Tuesday said it had closed admission of students for the 2017/2018 academic session following last week’s shortlisting of 3,500 successful candidates. Mr Adekoya Martins, the LASU Acting Head, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations of the institution, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. “The management hereby informs all candidates who chose LASU and were not shortlisted for admission that the admission process for the 2017/2018 academic session is closed,’’ he said . According to him, candidates, parents, guardians and the general public should be wary of `unscrupulous elements’ who may want to use the name of the institution to exploit unsuspecting candidates. “For emphasis, anybody who engages in transaction with any individual or group of individuals on behalf of the university does so at his or her own risk as LASU will not be liable for such transactions.” (NAN) SOURCE: http://www.dailyschoolgist.com.ng/lasu-we-have-closed-admission-for-20172018/ |
