Donald Trump was condemned on Friday for making the “revolting, enraging, disrespectful” claim that George Floyd, an African American man killed by police, is looking down from heaven and praising the US economy.

The president attempted to take a victory lap after a better-than-expected jobs report showed the national unemployment rate falling to 13.3% last month, with 2.5m jobs gained. But there was a slight uptick in African American joblessness.

In White House remarks that folded digressions within digressions, Trump declared: “Today is probably, if you think of it, the greatest comeback in American history.”

Speaking after the 10th night of mass anti-racism protests across the country, Trump suggested that Floyd, who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes, would be happy about the figures.

Hopefully George is looking down right now and saying this a great thing that’s happening for our country,” he said. “There’s a great day for him. It’s a great day for everybody. It’s a great day for everybody. There’s a great, great day in terms of equality.”

The comment earned swift opprobrium. Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, said: “George Floyd’s last words, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’ have echoed all across this nation and, quite frankly, around the world. For the president to try to put any other words in the mouth of George Floyd I frankly think is despicable.”

Michael Steele, who is African American, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, told the MSNBC network: “It’s not only tone deaf, it’s borderline blasphemous in light of what happened to Mr Floyd.

“I doubt George Floyd is in heaven looking down going, ‘Oh gee, great jobs report!’ Are you kidding me? Again, it speaks to just how out of step this man is with real life. This reality television presidency is incompatible with democracy, it’s incompatible with governing, it’s incompatible with everyday people trying to realise the American dream.”

Defenders of Trump argued that he was being willfully misconstrued. America First Action, a pro-Trump Super Political Action Committee, claimed in a tweet that his remark was taken “out of context”. Moments before referencing Floyd, Trump had said: “Equal justice under the law must mean that every American receives equal treatment in every encounter with law enforcement, regardless of race, color, gender or creed.”

The official White House Twitter account highlighted that comment in an apparent damage limitation exercise. But Democrats and other critics were unconvinced, noting that Trump had specifically tied Floyd’s imagined happiness to Friday, the day of the jobs report.

Brandon Gassaway, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said: “Trump’s claim is revolting, enraging, disrespectful – a slap in the face and a descent to the lowest possible level of discourse. Trump has no concern or regard for the feelings of anyone and will take every opportunity, even trampling on the memory of George Floyd, to commemorate a jobs report that shows fewer than half of black adults currently have a job and that fully 21 million Americans are unemployed.”

The surprise increase in jobs came after economists had predicted a rise in unemployment to 20% as America reels from the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide lockdowns. But the new rate of 13.3% is still far higher than previous peak unemployment, which was 10.8% in 1982.

Most of the 2.5m jobs gained over the month were in hospitality and leisure, an industry that lost 7.5m jobs in April as states went into quarantine. Analysts Capital Economics wrote that the report generated mixed feelings of “optimism, skepticism and anguish”.

They expect the economy to recoup about 60% of lost jobs by year-end with the unemployment rate dropping to 8-10%.

The president has been fiercely condemned for mishandling the pandemic and showing little empathy for minorities who suffered the worst of its health and economic effects, then for responding to nationwide protests by ordering law enforcement to “dominate” the streets and even threatening to deploy the military.

But Trump will hope the May report boosts his chance in November’s election against former vice-president Biden. In April, Jason Furman, a former economist in the Barack Obama administration, predicted: “We are about to see the best economic data we’ve seen in the history of this country” – a suggestion that reportedly alarmed Democratic strategists.

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, Trump struck a triumphal note, likening the economy to a healthy patient making a quick recovery. “This is outstanding, what’s happened today,” he said. “Now, they thought the number would be a loss of 9m jobs and it was a gain of almost 3m jobs.

“The numbers are great, and this leads us on to a long period of growth. We’ll go back to having the greatest economy anywhere in the world. Nothing close. And I think we’re going to have a very good upcoming few months.”

Some commentators have expressed hope that, having been put into an induced coma, the economy could make a “V-shaped” recovery. Trump again brushed aside warnings from public health experts and urged state governors to push ahead with economic reopenings.

“Now we’re opening, and we’re opening with a bang,” he said. “We’ve been talking about the V. This is better than a V. This is a rocket ship.”

Yamiche Alcindor, the White House correspondent of PBS News, asked Trump if he has a plan to address systemic racism. He replied: “It’s the greatest thing that can happen for race relations, for the African-American community, for the Asian American, for the Hispanic-American community, for women, for everything.

“Because our country is so strong, and that’s what my plan is. We’re going to have the strongest economy in the world. We almost are there now … And now we’re going to have an economy that’s even stronger.”

Although the unemployment rate for white people decreased from 14.2% to 12.4%, the rate for African Americans went up from 16.7% to 16.8%. When Alcindor challenged Trump on this point, he dismissed her with a wave and said: “You are something.”

Democrats dismissed Trump’s bombast and said he was out of touch with the pain and anguish felt by millions, particularly African Americans.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, said: “With nearly 20m people out of work and unemployment among African Americans increasing, now is not the time to be complacent or take a victory lap. Thirteen per cent unemployment number is not ‘joyous’ or ‘stupendous’ as President Trump has wrongly stated.”

Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Obama, tweeted: “Depression-era unemployment, 100,000+ dead, millions sick, massive protests, police riots, and Trump is giving a celebratory press conference. Not sure I’ve ever heard a president sound so divorced from the reality that most Americans are facing. Hilariously out of touch.”

A Department of Defense adviser has resigned, effective immediately, from the military's science board, citing what he believed to be a violation of conduct from Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

In his resignation letter to Esper, which was obtained by The Washington Post, James Miller Jr., who served as the US undersecretary of defense for policy from 2012 to 2014, recalled that he swore an oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" and "to bear true faith and allegiance to the same," similar to what the defense secretary had done before he took office.

"On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath," Miller wrote to Esper.

Miller's reasoning centered on President Donald Trump's visit Monday to St. John's Church in Washington, DC, where police cleared peaceful protesters with tear gas so that he could pose with a Bible for photographs.

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop, described the scene to CNN and The Washington Post as an "abuse of sacred symbols" amid "a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and everything that our churches stand for."

Budde told The Post that she "was not given even a courtesy call" that authorities would be clearing the area "with tear gas so they could use one of our churches as a prop."

Esper, along with US Army Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also present during the visit.

I have not been given drugs. I'll book an appointment with the Glaucoma specialist this Friday. And I'll show him the latest CVF test he'll compare it with the one I did last time. And if he tells me to go for the 40k test which you called OCT 2weeks ago. I'll do it too.

I don't know my IOP. The first test I did this year the eyes were dilated and I was asked to close the eye for 15 mins which I did. After the first 15mins they administer another drop. They did it 3ce and I was asked to sit before a machine and the opthalmologist pointed a yellow light into the eye one after the other and later said my disc is suspicious. She told me to do a CVF test which I did.

And I was referred to a glaucoma specialist who told me I would have to do the CVF test again in 3 months time and he said I'll still do one that costs 40k at a private university hospital. So I went for the 2nd CVF test today.

You might need to take the test from time to time to tell if there's is further worsening of visual field defect or if it's stable . your doctor might be asking for a repeat in 3 months time just to ensure the results re consistent or to tell if theres a worsening of visual field defect within this period. The other test costing about 40k should be OCT required sometimes to establish a diagnosis of glaucoma. you are likely having a large cup disc ratio which sometimes is associated with glaucoma hence the use of d term 'suspicious disc' and there is need for further investigation to tell if it's actually glaucoma or not requiring these tests you are asked to do . As regards your discomfort after use of system, do you use ur glasses while working on the system and yet experience same discomfort ? If yes, how long have you been using your current lens prescription ?

Yes i still experience discomfort while on system even with my glasses. I got a new prescription 2 months ago. At times i would feel like i have pepper sprayed into the eye at times it stings i experience itching too and it aches there by leading to headache and tiredness, all these happen when i work on computer or phone for sometime. I do experience dryness at night.

My opthamologist told me to stop staring at screen at nights cause of the glare these device emit. So i try my best to stop using my phone, system at night even i avoid watching TV at night too cause my eye is too sensitive to these devices at night.

I couldn't sleep the day i did the test. My life has changed ever since then,. I think about it everyday. Please what can i do to avoid eye pressure that damages the disc. Should i limit my computer use? And is that large cup disc ratio linked to any other eye issue aside glaucoma?

And at times i used to experience this feeling like there is an object in the eyes trying to force itself out. As if my eyeball wants to jump out or burst after looking at the screen for a long period of time or when i look at the ground.

if you get headaches only when you do not use your glasses , then your headaches can be attributed to uncorrected refractive error which the glasses is taking care of and there are no drugs to substitute glasses . You should ensure you use your glasses always. I'll like to know why u cannot use ur glasses always

I went for a dilated eye exam last february and the opthmologist said my disc is suspicious she told me to go and do CVF test. After doing it i was referred to a glaucoma specialist to read the CVF test after reading it the man said i'll have to do another CVF test in 3 months time. I was suprised to hear that because i was thinking he should be able to detect my Visual field with the one i did and each CVF test cost 5k here.

He told me i'll still have to do another eye test that costs N40k at a private university hospital here because the state hospital here does not have the machine. I'll do another CVF test next week and after that i'll be referred to a private hospital to do a test that costs 40k. I also have refractive error and i use glasses too. So what is the meaning of "suspicious eye disc"? Is it that i have glaucoma? And i work on digital devices a lot that is the reason why i have refractive error and is there any connection between working heavily on computer and glaucoma/eye pressure?

Due to your health condition (Eye), I believed calling would have been the best option solution for you in this situation.

To her action, I believed she is still in love with her ex. The Ex is a priority and you're just an option when things aren't going well with the priority, the option is remembered.

I do call her there was a time i asked for meeting outside church as you've said but she told me she is always busy during the week. I even suggested weekend she said she used to do house chores during weekends and write lesson note cause she teaches in a secondary school.

There's this girl in my church who loves greeting me. She was the first person to shake my hand and wished me happy new year during last year cross over. We started communicating and i got her number. She enjoys chatting with me even when I'm offline she would drop a note that i should beep her when I'm online. I have refractive error so my opthamologist told me to stop using phone/computer at night cause my eyes are too sensitive to glares but this lady would want me to come online at night to chat with her which i did every day. I would strain my problematic eyes at night just because i love her so much.

So i later told her how much i love her but she always laugh whenever i tell her this. There was a time she even told me to stop discussing love with her so i stopped asking her out. During the last valentine's day she didn't come online which was unusual of her i chatted her up the next day when i saw her online and i asked her why she was offline on feb 14. She told me her ex called her and settled things with her and now they are back together she said she wasn't expecting it. I asked her how she felt when he was settling things with her she said she was so happy and relaxed and i replied that's good.

Well, i withdrew immediately and stopped chatting with her, two weeks later she chatted me up and complained i have been ignoring her by not chatting or calling her. I told her i had been busy with some things. she later told me she wanted to discuss some things with me. She said her ex who settled things with her recently has been acting strange again and she does not understand him she told me to advice her i replied I'm not good at giving relationship advice i ended it by telling her to share it with her mum since her mum knows about their relationship.

This lady has been disturbing me since then. At times she would chat me up and tell me she has missed me so much. She really disturbed me last month with miss you so much this and that. I'm not just happy with the way she roused my feelings and ran back to her ex and i feel like someone's second choice which i don't like if her ex didn't act strange would she have come back to me.
