Walaihi , if GEJ can make electricity stable, his name will be engraved in Gold because many Nigerians operating small scale businesses will jerk to life again. Electricity in no small ways will jump-start our economy and make a large number of the populace self employed. If GEJ should achieve stable electricity, I will not only vote for him in 2015, I will also voluntarily campaign for him.

Politics / Why Terrorism Is Trending In Nigeria & The Way Out - JIDE LEIGH by apala911: 10:24am On Aug 08, 2012
A society that hands gold medals and huge chunk of the highly coveted national cake to obvious law breakers for whatsoever reason, then say to the hard working and law abiding who has decided not to steal, throw bombs or kill to remain law abiding is obviously just spelling it out that crime pays, regardless of how much government budget or claim to spend on security.

I’m candidly quite fascinated with the way controversial but highly brilliant Mallam Nasir El-Rufai puts it when he said “the strategy of handing out wads of cash to people that have not earned the money through meaningful work; with a pre-existing sense of entitlement may ostensibly amount to rewarding insurgency which is referred to as “moral hazard” in economy terms.

The federal government according to The Financial Times has spent $1 billion on the amnesty program of the Niger delta ex-militants since inception. It has also offered to hold talks with the notorious northern Boko-Haram sect which would probably result into the FG cutting them a deal and eventually a share of the juicy national cake. Yeah it’s no longer news, yet it itches the ear that the federal Government spends an average of N1 billion Naira of our seemingly scarce resources daily on security, and I’m thinking the security of what? Lives and properties I could hear a baritone voice reply, whose live exactly? Certainly not mine or the lives of the sixteen worshipers who were killed in church in Okene few days back

In nations we tirelessly try to emulate, there are systems put in place to ensure that the citizenry are well catered for and also given a sense of belonging. It’s the kind of program that uses public funds to provide a degree of economic security for the public. This program caters for various classes of people; the aged, disabled, survivors and the unemployed. Facts have it that Nigeria is a nation with 33.4% of its population between 10- 24 and 47% are between 20–40 years of age.

The population of youths in Nigeria is 43% according to Population Reference Bureau. If you check closely that’s almost three times what world Giants like china can boast of (15.4%). It is heartbreaking to know that over 68million of them are unemployed. Any government having that much raw man power is considered lucky and should be maximizing it to the fullest by creating employment (directly and indirectly) and boosting away her GDP.

However, due to bad leadership and excessive looting of public funds or misappropriation as they often refer to it, the achievement of this feat has become as impossible as a voyage to the Bermuda triangle.

The government should emulate other nations and setup a scheme that would see to the welfare of the Nigerian youth, which would also be in charge of paying them a certain amount of money at an agreed interval. It is a common practice in countries like Australia which pays youth allowance within the range of A$91.60 to A$167.35 per week,  in Finland a basic amount of 25 Euros is paid daily, Greece 454 Euros per month, France 1111 Euros monthly. The standard payment in Ireland is €188 per week.  In New Zealand, $167.83 is paid to single person between 20–24 years without children, $288.47 for single parents and $335.66 for married couples. This is to mention but a few amidst countries like the United States of America and England

Over the last 10years, the crime and vices that have held the country to ransom, creating fear, terror and pandemonium can be attributed firstly to the fact that Nigerians are broke and idle, a terrible combination that is void of hope. Secondly the fact that there is no value whatsoever placed on the Nigerian life by government.

Talk of our roads, plying them make you wonder if our roads are means of population control. The standard of living is so abysmally bad that I question the huge disbursement of public funds on guns, vests, and ammunition to secure lives that would be eventually lost to one ghastly motor accident due to bad roads or avertible plane crash as a result of negligence in high places.

Judging from the N920 billion of the 2012 budget and the N66 billion recurrent expenditure from the amnesty programme to be spent on ex-militants, it becomes obvious that government is now interested in the security of its citizens. What they fail to realize is that peace is not won only with guns and handcuffs and giving money. Just give the youth a means of livelihood by creating jobs and terrorism would be out it.

As it seems, it won’t be long before other youths tow the line of violence. Believe me, Nigerians are not so dumb to figure that out, and the least the country needs now is the emergence of another version of the Boko whatever.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Politics / Kogi Church Attack: How We Escaped – Survivors by apala911: 8:34am On Aug 08, 2012
Twenty-four hours after the deadly attack on a Deeper Life Bible Church, in Otite, Okene Local Council, Kogi State, survivors yesterday recounted how they cheated death . The gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram, attacked the worshippers during the weekly Bible study, killing 16 people. The death toll rose to 20 by Press time.

The survivors said that the gunmen first blocked the church’s three entrances before spraying the occupants with bullets. The hoodlums, they noted, arrived at the premises in three unmarked Toyota buses, disarmed the policemen keeping watch outside the gate and blocked the three entrances before opening fire.

Narrating his ordeal to our reporter who visited the injured victims where they were hospitalized in Okene yesterday, one of the survivors who identified himself as Clement Okoro, said that he was lucky to have temporarily gone out of the church to ease himself when he suddenly heard sporadic gunshots. “When the gunshot subsided, a few of us ran to the church only to see the lifeless bodies of believers littering the ground with blood flowing like an abbatoir, I am only lucky that my wife and children were still in the shop when I left for the church, this is a most horrendous situation,” he lamented Another victim, said they were in the church for the weekly Bible study when all of a sudden they heard shooting.

He said all he could recall was that he found himself in the hospital with bullet wounds on the legs and arms. One of the pastors who refused to disclose his name, said he and his wife escaped by divine intervention. He described the episode as “most wicked because when they shot the worshippers , they began to spray bullets underneath the benches in the church so that no one could escape.

He said he immediately took cover within the neighbourhood as the shooting lasted for more than 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Governor Idris Wada and the head of the security agencies have vowed to arrest the suspects.

Wada, who was at the scene of the incident and hospitals where the survivors are currently receiving treatment in Okene yesterday, said that the state government and security agencies will fish out the culprits and bring them to book.

The governor pledged that the state government will pay all their medical bills. Wada also commiserated with the bereaved families and the church. At the Palace of Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alhaji Ado Ibrahim, an angry governor stated that first class traditional rulers have not done enough in the area of security in their various domains.

He charged them to live up their responsibility to arrest the situation. He told the monarch that he was not happy over what is happening in his domain, urging him to use his experience to check the ugly security situation.

The governor expressed dissatisfaction over the rate at which crime is being committed in the area which is very alarming, adding that the development could scare investors. The governor, however, commended the security agents in the state for quick intervention.

In his remarks,, the Ohinoyi said he was sad over the ugly situation in his domain, pledging that he will do everything possible to bring the situation under control. The medical director of one of the hospitals treating the injured (names withheld), told Gov. Wada that no death was recorded there and that the victims are responding, assuring that those treated will survive.

The zonal Coordinator of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Omotosho told journalists that he received a distress call from one of the pastors of the church when they were under attack, adding that when he got there, it was a gory scene, It a gory sight, as bodies of the worshippers littered everywhere in the church.

Politics / Boko Haram, Tool To Blackmail Jonathan – Asari Dokubo by apala911: 8:16am On Aug 08, 2012
The leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVC), Alhaji Asari Dokubo, has said that the activities Boko Haram sect are being promoted to blackmail President Goodluck Jonathan.

Asari, who spoke exclusively to LEADERSHIP yesterday, also warned that those anticipating the impeachment of President Jonathan were ‘playing with fire’.

He also warned that the North should not bother throwing up a candidate to contest against Jonathan in 2015, stressing that Jonathan will serve a second term in office.

He further called on Jonathan to revoke all oil blocs allocated to people that are not from oil bearing communities.

Fuming yesterday, Asari said, “For me, Boko Haram is the dumbest product the North can offer to the world for sale. It is so dumb. They are only making the country ungovernable because Jonathan wants to give them capital, to notice them.

“They had tacit support in the North initially when they started. When you go and attack innocent persons in their place of worship, that is cowardice. The prophet (SAW) did not attack innocent people in the church or synagogue, or idol worshippers. The terms of battle all the world that SAW fought was on self defence.

“To me Boko Haram is the dumbest product the North has produced and it is not in their interest as it will destroy the North.”

On the consequences of the activities of the sect leading to war, Asari said, “We will cut them off. It is a simple thing; everybody should know it. If there is a war they will be restricted, we will cut them off from the coast. The oil is not an issue. We are Ijaw people we make sure that the Republic of Benin, Togo and other places where goods will come to them are cut off. They will starve; that is the truth of the matter.”

Meanwhile, following the Asari-Dokubo’s comments on the northern region, the Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) yesterday told President Jonathan and other prominent Nigerians to call Asari-Dokubo to order before he sets the country on fire.

The youths said it was important to call him to order in the interest of peace and national development, declaring that “the north is not afraid of war.”

The youths in a statement by its national leader, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, also stated that “northerners are not war mongers and will never call for war within the polity of Nigeria.”

“Let it be known that the youths of the North under the umbrella of the AYF are peace loving people who believe in the peaceful co-existence of Nigeria,” he said.

Politics / First Ladies' Land Tussle: Ex Fct Minister Blames Turai, Aliero by apala911: 12:17pm On Aug 03, 2012
Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr. Aliyu Moddibo Umar, has cleared the air over the controversy surrounding the parcel of land between the former First Lady, Hajia Tura’i Yar’Adua and her predecessor, Dame Patience Jonathan. He said that he allocated the land to African First Ladies Peace Mission, AFLPM, in 2008.

Moddibo, who served as Minister of FCT between 2007 and 2008, explained that it was his successor, Alhaji Adamu Aliero, who changed the concept of the land and reallocated it to Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation, WAYEF, a non-governmental organization belonging to Turai, two years later.

The former minister made the clarifications in an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America yesterday. The report was monitored in Abuja.

Moddibo said that there was no controversy about it as the land was allocated to ALPM and a certificate of occupancy (C of 0) prepared for the mission.

He said: “When I became minister, I brought the idea for the building of the secretariat as a legacy the former First Lady would leave behind.

“I consulted the former President (the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua) and advised him on the project and after she became the leader of the African First Ladies Mission.

“I told him that the NGO needed a secretariat to build an edifice just like the Women Centre built by the late Maryam Babangida and the National Hospital built by Maryam Abacha.

“He (Yar’Adua) agreed and told me to look for a land. When I eventually found the land, I prepared a Certificate of Occupancy and the structural design of the proposed secretariat before I reported back to him.

“He appreciated the effort and directed me to meet her with the proposal.

“After a discussion, she accepted the idea and set up a committee which comprising the FCTA and Foreign Affairs officials as well as Maryam Abacha, the late Murtala Muhammad’s wife (Ajoke) and Patience.”

The former FCT minister said that the late President Yar’Adua warned him not to allocate any land to either his wife or children.

He clarified that he allocated the land to an NGO (AFLPM) and not an individual.

Efforts to get the response of Moddibo’s successor, Aliero, to explain why he allegedly reallocated the same land to Turai for her private NGO proved abortive as his two numbers were not

Politics / Power Supply’ll Improve This Year, Says Jonathan by apala911: 9:45am On Aug 03, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday promised improved  power supply before the end of the year.
The President gave the assurance during a meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Trinidad and Tobago, where he is on a state visit.
“There will be a significant improvement in the power sector before the end of 2012,” he said.
The President also promised Nigerians of his government' resolve to fight corruption.
He said Nigeria will honour the Air Services Agreement  between it and Trinidad and Tobago.
The President said the agreement, which covers direct flights between the two countries, will come into operation.
The Nigerian community called on the President to intervene in the $21,000 bond paid by Nigerians to the government of Trinidad and Tobago as a precondition for obtaining visa.
The request was brought before the President when Jonathan met with Nigerians living in the country.
Jonathan said he would ensure that an  agreement is reached on the issue.
This, he said, would form part of the bilateral talks,   between him and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
The President assured his audience that his administration would address all challenges and ensure that  relations between the two countries are strengthened.
The Nigerian High Commissioner, Musa Jon Jen, said over 30 Nigerian professors and 400 doctors and nurses work in the country.

Politics / N2b Cash Not Found In My Residence, Says Ex-perm Sec by apala911: 11:52am On Aug 02, 2012
A former Permanent Secretary in the office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Abubakar Atiku Kigo, has denied claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  found N2 billion cash in his home in the wake of the police pension scam.
A statement issued yesterday by his lawyer, Yakubu Musa Argungu, said it was unfortunate that many Nigerians had already believed the story.
Argungu, who was quoting Kigo’s lead counsel, Yahaya Mahmoud (SAN), said since the false and libelous story was first reported, Kigo had vehemently denied the purported discovery of N2 billion in his house, and had challenged anyone with proof to the contrary to come forward.
He said: “This denial is also contained in a submission Kigo made to the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, which investigated the pension scam currently rocking the media.
“It is noteworthy that neither the EFCC, the Nigerian Police nor any other security organization in the country has ever made such report of the alleged N2 billion found. There is also no mention of such recovery in all relevant documents before the court.”
The lawyer said Kigo left the police pension office about one and a half year ago, arguing that it was inconceivable that he (Kigo) had been keeping the alleged N2 billion in his house since then.
He said: “One even wonders the amount of space which N2 billion cash would occupy, particularly in a three-bedroom house that hardly has enough space to park a vehicle in the courtyard.
“Although, it is a fact that the continued peddling of this rumour will not, by any stretch of imagination, make Malam Kigo guilty of an offence he has not committed, yet it is capable of misleading the general public into believing a story that is false, baseless and unfounded.”

Politics / Budget Row: PDP Chairman Tukur’s Peace Moves Crash by apala911: 11:27am On Aug 02, 2012
Bamanga Tukur
House rejects request for talks

There is disquiet within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the budget implementation row between the Executive and the House of Representatives.
The deepening crisis has forced the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to write the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, for a meeting with the PDP Caucus.
But Tukur’s request could not be granted because the House is on recess.
Besides, some Presidency officials are urging members of the House to take it easy.
The House says the Executive must implement the budget fully by September or get set for impeachment proceedings against the President.
The Senate joined the row on Tuesday when it mandated its Committee on Appropriation and Finance to ensure that the Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, appears before Senators today.
According to a PDP source, Tukur’s  special meeting with the party’s caucus  would have  prevailed on members to allow dialogue. It was  also to “subtly divide” the members, it was learnt.
The party source said: “The leadership of the PDP has initiated moves to wade into the communication gap between the Executive and the House of Representatives.
“Our National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, personally wrote a letter to the Speaker of the House on how PDP caucus could assist the party to explore dialogue to resolve the matter.
“Our chairman is just interested in restoring peace; that is why the party is intervening.”
Asked of the outcome of the intervention, the source added: “The intervention started on July 23, but we have not gone far because the House replied that its members are on recess.
“The party would have loved to hold the session during this vacation but the House said most members had gone on vacation and could not be recalled for a meeting.
“It was also indicated in the reply that the Speaker of the House was abroad on vacation.”
A member of the House, who spoke with our correspondent, said: “We heard of the party’s request from some members of the National Working Committee of the PDP, but it is surprising that the party leadership was not aware that we are on vacation.
“We are ready for dialogue but we need to iron out issues already put in the public domain by the Minister of Finance, Dr.Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
“Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala accused members of the National Assembly of tinkering with the budget; we want her to lay the cards on the table. We are angry because the government has introduced blackmail into this budget row.
“By our records, constituency projects are about 2 -2.5per cent of the 2012 budget. Let the Minister of Finance come and justify how 2per cent is impeding the implementation of this year’s budget.”
Another lawmaker said Tukur’s request was suspect.
He said: “Even if we are not on recess, the budget crisis is beyond party line. A meeting with PDP Caucus implies an attempt to divide and rule the House. That is a wrong approach from the ruling party.
“On one hand, the Presidency is trying to open talks with the Speaker but on the other hand, PDP is wooing caucus members in the House to secure a comfortable majority to stave off impeachment threat.”
Following the inability of the PDP leadership to meet with the Caucus, it was gathered that the Presidency has initiated fresh lobbying of House members to give room for dialogue.
It was learnt that some top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, are involved in the lobbying.
A high-ranking House member said: “Those of us around, who are yet to travel out, are under tremendous pressure from government officials.
“They have been asking us why we are fighting the President. But some of us corrected the misrepresentation by these officers that the budget row is a confrontation.

Politics / Misused Security Vote by apala911: 12:37pm On Jul 31, 2012
The office of state Governors as enshrined in Nig constitution is a highly exalted position. A state Governor manages the affairs of his state, and is generally regarded as the chief security officer of the state. The federal govt in recognition of his role in the maintenance of peace and order, makes provision for security vote (money) for these GOvernors. This security vote runs into billions of naira. The money is primarily for them to have a smooth atmosphere, necessary for smooth administration. The question then is, what role have these Govs played in restoring peace, especially in the troubled north?

The Govs go home with this money, yet they do nothing. They are closer to the people, yet they tend to be helpless in the face of violence and terrorism. They control the LG Chairmen, who are much more closer to the grassroot yet, they can't help in the fight against terrorism. Is their silence a conspiracy against GEJ? Or are the terrorist more powerful than the Govs? Are the Govs not on ground? Should the Govt continue the payment of security vote to the Govs even when they cannot guarantee the safety of their people?
Politics / "Honourables" Corruption by apala911: 10:32am On Jul 31, 2012
Corruption is corruption, regardless of how it is dressed. However, there is "Honourable" corruption like the types Herman Hembe, Faroukgate and gbajagate which are fast downplaying the integrity scorecard of the house of representatives. These corruptible acts are honourably orchestrated in forms of bribe for a quick passage of bills, bribe for budget, as well as cash for clearance sleaze.

within the last seven months, the house of representative may not be getting it right following the spate of corruption levelled against some dis-Honourables which unfortunately has catapulted the 7th House into the eyes of the national corruption harrier show.Incidentally, the remarks that have emanated from the the house by some members of the public unfortunately point at the executive as responsible, and one begin to wonder, maybe it is the presidency that is acting the unseen robot which is directing the itchy palms and inordinate desires of some memebers to demand bribe.

As a matter of fact, we know that corruption is a human vice that is inordinate and overwhelms the human soul, hence if you are corrupt, you are corrupt. To this end, any member of the house found culpable of corruption should go through the full hog of investigation and prosecution if need be so as to make the house live above board until the remaining part of the tenure of the 7th house.
