MIDDLE BELT BEFORE OCTOBER 1 – GROUP TO FULANI HERDSMEN There Will Be Total War If You Don’t Vacate Middle Belt Before October 1 – Group To Fulani Herdsmen A coalition of middle belt youths under the umbrella of Middle Belt Renaissance Forum has ordered all herdsmen to vacate their region before October 1, 2017 or face total war. The youths also distanced themselves from the quit notice issued by northern youths mandating Igbos to vacate the northern region by October 1, Leadership reports. The coalition made their position known following the outcome of a meeting in Abuja which held over the weekend. The meeting which was attended by representatives of youth groups from all the states making up the middle belt region discussed extensively topical issues confronting the area. The forum in a communique issued by its convener, Comrade Jones Simon Alfa, called on governors from the region to sit up to their responsibility of governing and desist from harassing media practitioners. The communique in part read: “The Middle Belt Governors should sit up to their responsibility of governing the people who voted them to power instead of the sudden primitive accumulation of wealth at the detriment of the suffering voters. “The Middle Belt Youths will no longer take the recklessness of the Governors in arresting Media Practitioners, Bloggers and Social Media Crusaders e.g Kaduna Governor and that of Kogi who are clear examples.” “The Middle Belt is not in any way part of the Northern agitation for the Igbo’s to vacate by 1st October. We have been living with the Igbo’s peacefully in our localities and will not join in the call for secession. “All herdsmen should vacate the Middle Belt Region before 1st October, 2017 or there will be total war if they are not ready to live in peace.” The group called on the core north to stop using the middle belt people in achieving what it said was selfish political, economic aims and objectives. The youths stated that the middle belt people are not northerners. |

Five friends, all students of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, and a barber are in trouble after they allegedly raped a female student and recorded the criminal activity to blackmail their victim into silence and serial sex with her. The barber, said to be a friend of the victim’s boyfriend, Solomon Timilehin, described as the prime suspect in the case, allegedly made his room available for the alleged rape. The other suspected rapists are Olagbaju Tobi, Adetuyi Olakunle, Adeyemi Adebisi and Eric Nwage. A source told Sunday Vanguard that the suspects had used the video recording to blackmail their victim into having sex twice after the initial rape before she opened up. Police report had it that “after they raped her, they released her with a threat that they will use charm on her if she revealed the incident to anyone”. According to the source, the boyfriend, Timilehin, who had been having misunderstanding with the victim for allegedly dumping him for another lover, decided to teach her the lesson of her life. The two lovers were alleged to have been dating for over six months but the girl refused to yield to the boyfriend’s sexual advances. Timilehin was said to have been infuriated when he saw the name of another lover registered on the victim’s telephone and reported to his friends who promised to help him to teach the “cheat” the lesson of her life. The friends, it was alleged, later agreed that the treatment the victim deserved was for the five of them to rape her. One of them, according to the source, suggested that he would pretend as a peacemaker wanting to settle the misunderstanding between the two estranged lovers by inviting her to a venue outside the campus. The victim walked into the trap and they took turns to rape her at Road 17, Funbi Fagun Housing Estate, Ondo. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the suspects, while raping the victim, threatened to stab her to death with a knife if she raised the alarm to attract neighbours’ attention. After the alleged rape, the five suspects chased their victim out of the room with a warning that it would be in her interest to keep her mouth shout or she would live to regret if she reported to the school authorities or the police. And out of the fear that the suspects may release the rape video or harm her as threatened, the victim kept the incident to herself. It was gathered that she confided in one of her friends when the suspects asked her to make herself available for the third round of sex after the rape. The friend, it was gathered hinted the Dean of the Student Affairs of the Adeyemi College who in turn notified the institution’s security guards. An ambush was laid for the suspects who were picked one after the other. The lover boy was the first to be picked and he subsequently fingered his alleged accomplices. They were later taken to the Ondo Divisional Police Station and thereafter transferred to the state police headquarters in Akure. Speaking with Sunday Vanguard when Ondo State Police Command paraded the suspected rapists alongside 15 other suspected cultists, the suspects, except the victim’s boyfriend, denied that she was raped, saying she consented to their demand for sex for a fee. One of the suspects, Adetuyi Olakunle, who confessed to using his mobile telephone to record the alleged gang-rape, said they decided to do so “to make sure the incident was not reported to the school authorities or law enforcement agencies”. Olakunle said: “I recorded the video so that the girl will not be able to tell anyone. I was afraid that she might report to the school authorities if the scene was not recorded.” The victim’s boyfriend, Timilehim, a 200-level sociology student, said he only invited “her to my friend’s house so that they could help us settle our misunderstanding” “She called me when I was in class to say she wanted to see me; I had not seen her for a while. I took her to the house of one of my friends so that we could settle our differences. |
‘There Shouldn’t Be Age Limit For Presidential Candidates’ – Obasanjo Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has diagreed with the stipulation on the minimum age for a presidential candidate as he said that age should not be a barrier for anyone to lead the country. He argued that it was not right to stipulate minimum age for a presidential candidate without also specifying the maximum age beyond which one would no longer be able to contest. According to him, capability and competence rather than age should be qualifications for leadership, recalling that Gen. Yakubu Gowon became military Head of State at the age of 33. Obasanjo said this while commenting on the proposition by the Senate to reduce the age of presidential candidates from 40 to 35. The former President featured on Sunday as the guest speaker at an exposition series tagged, “God in my life,” organised by the Touchbearer Society of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos. Senate Agrees To 35-Years As Minimum Age For President “Quite frankly, if we put minimum age, why are we not putting maximum age? If they put minimum age and then say that even if you are 90, you can be President, because there is no maximum age limit to being President. To me, there should be no age limit. Gen. Gowon became the Head of State at the age of 33, I became the Head of State at 39…I believe there should be no age limit; let the people decide,” Obasanjo said. |
Every relationship is a function of how the partners see it. Its always interesting to see that one of the most common presenting issues in couples counselling is either communication or conflict management. Equally interesting is the fact that, when asked what the couples want to talk about or what brought them to counseling, it is usually one party who is doing the talking. They vocal party most often than not is setting his/her own counselling agenda while the other party demonstrates something of a superficial compliance. *Sun, 13 Nov, 2016* *The Watchful Soldier* *TEXT*: 2 TIMOTHY 2:1-13 *Key Verse*: "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier" (2 Timothy 2:4). In practical terms, a genuine Christian is a soldier at war all his life. The difference between him and the conventional soldier is that whereas the latter has peace-time, moments of respite when he is not at the war front, the former is always waging war. The fervent Christian is at a spiritual war front at all times, the strife or struggle of which is without border or timing. The adversary Satan is on the watch to strike where he considers the most vulnerable point and moment (1 Peter 5: .A Christian in a state of spiritual watchfulness do not dabble in the affairs of life. "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier." Apostle Paul advises all Christians, through his inspired epistle to young Timothy, that they should go through life by travelling light. That means they must be careful in earmarking wealth to themselves at the expense of their divine treasure in heaven. What then should one carry light? Christ recommends in Matthew 11:28-30, thus: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light". A faithful soldier of Christ should have his mind fixed on heaven as he marches on the narrow path. He must discipline himself against acquisitive tendencies common with worldly soldiers who are won't to loot the territories they conquer. He must remember that in heaven, he has *better and enduring substance* of *many mansions* and eternal life provided by Jesus Christ. When this is settled in his heart, he would *endure hardness* and look forward to his place in heaven. *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY*: Live in the world, but never allow the world to live in you. *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR*: EZEKIEL 6-8 |
