TV/Movies / Silent Night: Chico Ejiro, Nevade Bridge TV To Remake Movie by ApplesBiteMag: 4:45pm On Oct 14, 2020
Remember Nollywood Classic, Silent Night the 1996 blockbuster where veteran actor Segun Arinze earned his byname till date as Black Arrow, that story is about to be retold with an even more compelling storyline, and a 21st century feel Producer and Director Chico Ejiro has hinted.
For the remake, Ejiro revealed during a conversation with this platform that he will be teaming up with Neville Sajere and Nevile Bridge Productions.

For those who would share the sentiment, the movie first released nearly 25 years ago constituted one of the defining moments for Nollywood.

This was so, because, in addition to its stellar cast and brilliant performance from actors like Ramsey Noah, Kate Henshaw, Segun Arinze, Joke Silva, Alex Usifo, Okey Bakassi, Ejike Asiegbu and others, the romantic thriller also came with a refreshingly creative storyline and a rear theme at the time...

Health / Douching: Is It Safe For Vaginal Hygiene? by ApplesBiteMag: 7:08pm On Sep 04, 2020
Over a decade ago, I was a victim of bouts of vaginal infection. This was really distressing. Really, I’m this kinda person that’s obsessed with keeping my vagina very clean, fresh and healthy.
I practically scrub it every morning and night. Anything and everything to prevent having a vaginal infection, I did.
From wearing clean underwears, spreading under wears in sun, very frequent change in sanitary towels, avoiding public rest rooms to keeping my personal restroom sparkling at all times.

Your guess is as good as mine, it did not work!I still had 1-3 episode per year. For someone who wasn’t sexually active, I didn’t know why I had to suffer these horrible experiences. All these happened during pre-clinical years.

For me, it starts with vaginal itching, burning sensation while voidin urine and to crown it all, an offensive odour. Imagine a young pretty lady smelling like rotten fish. That can be disgusting.

Several years into my practice, I still meet clients both young and old with similar complaints with a lot of them frustrated about its recurrence After taking proper history and carrying out investigations, majority of them have an otherwise clean bill of health excluding this complaints. Infact, a lot of my clients already know what medications to use and they start experiencing this symptoms.

The reason behind their clinic visit is to find out why it re-occurs despite their excellent hygiene practices.

Douching is a method of washing out the vagina with water and antiseptics, fragrances, vinegar or other chemical substances.

In simple words, washing your vaginal with any thing other than water. Most people including me do that to keep the vagina clean, healthy and pleasant smelling.

We all have vagina flora (normal bacteria in the vagina) that helps to maintain the pH of the vagina which is acidic.

This acidity helps to prevent growth of yeast and other unwanted organism thereby keeping the vagina safe from infections.

During douching, a lot of these normal flora are washed off or killed by the antiseptics. Thus, messes up the pH of the vagina.

This exposes the vagina to a lot of infections with bacteria vaginosis topping the list. That was the puzzle I couldn’t figure for years.

Other complications of douching include: increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, increased risk of cervical cancer and so on.

I usually will advise to wash up with just clean water only. Taking that advice might be difficult especially for people, I inclusivie, who are obsessed with scrubing it all off.

In that case, feminine wash is an alternative. They are specifically designed to maintain the pH of the vagina.

They make you feel clean with added advantage of moisturizing and soothing the skin.

However, some medical experts have argued against its use with claims that these products still contain chemicals which are not safe.

I clean with just water now, I mean, it`s safe, cheap and free of controversy.

Most of my clients still visit but usually for other complaints.

Occasionally my obsession returns, then I use the feminine wash. My advice, do not douche, clean with just water or use a feminine wash.

Politics / Just In: Mali President, Ibrahim Keita Resigns After Mutiny by ApplesBiteMag: 8:44am On Aug 19, 2020
Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta has resigned, after being detained by soldiers on Tuesday, state TV reports.
In a televised address, Mr Keïta said he was also dissolving the government and parliament.

“I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power,” he added.

It comes hours after he and Prime Minister Boubou Cissé were taken to a military camp near the capital Bamako, drawing condemnation from regional powers and France.

“If today, certain elements of our armed forces want this to end through their intervention, do I really have a choice?” said Mr Keïta.

“I hold no hatred towards anyone, my love of my country does not allow me to,” he added. “May God save us.”

Earlier, the mutinying soldiers took control of the Kati camp.

There has been anger among troops about pay and over a continuing conflict with jihadists – as well as widespread discontent with the former president.

Mr Keïta won a second term in elections in 2018, but there has been anger over corruption, the mismanagement of the economy and a dispute over legislative elections...

Education / COVID-19 Scare: Teachers, Parent Disagree With Government As WASSCE Begins Today by ApplesBiteMag: 12:39pm On Aug 17, 2020
Parents lament additional financial burden, coronavirus charges
Provide PPE for yourselves if government fails, NUT tells teachers
Grace Edema, Olaide Oyelude, Chima Azubuike, Adeniyi Olugbemi, Raphael Ede, John Charles Patrick Odey and Dennis Naku.

Claims by state governments that they had made adequate preparations for students taking the West African Senior School Examinations, which would start on Monday (today), attracted mixed reactions from parents and teachers on Sunday.

State governments told The PUNCH that they had fulfilled all the guidelines released by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to prevent a further spread of COVID-19 during WASSCE.

While some parents expressed satisfaction with the preparations, others said state governments were making claims that did not exist.

Some parents, in separate interviews with our correspondents, lamented that COVID-19 had become a tool by schools, particularly private ones, for exploiting students.

Parents said the need to provide face masks, personal protective equipment and other non-pharmaceutical items had increased their financial burden.

In Ogun State, the Special Adviser to the state Governor on Primary and Tertiary Education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, said apart from teachers in senior schools, all teachers in junior schools were mobilised for the two-week revision for students.

Soyombo, in a chat with The PUNCH, said all students were given two face masks, adding that each school had thermometers, running water and buckets.

But some teachers, who confided in one of our correspondents, lamented that as of Friday, the personal protective equipment had yet to be made available in schools.

While some teachers said they had yet to make provision for social distancing, others said the classrooms had been arranged for the exams.

A teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “As of Friday, there was no provision for the PPE for both teachers and students. Some schools were given facemasks, sanitisers, soaps, infrared thermometer with buckets. Certain schools were given tanks.”

A parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “ The school of my children has mandated us to get them at least three face masks, tissue paper, sanitizers and face towels. All these would be shown at the school entrance and if students do not have them, the school won’t allow them in. All these will constitute a financial burden for poor parents.”

In Katsina, the Katsina State capital, Alhaji Abdullahi Moshood, expressed fear about the performance of the students.

Private schools introduce sundry fees

He lamented after resumption, schools, particularly private institutions, introduced sundry fees.

We paid COVID-19 charges – Parent

He said, “The school, which my boys attend, insisted that we must pay N25,000 as third term school fees and also N3,000 per student as COVID-19 charges. Of course, we paid as those were the criteria the schools insisted that we must meet before the children could be allowed to take the examinations.”

But another parent, Mallam Abdulmumin Kusada, whose daughter attends Hassan Iro Inko Girls College, Katsina, lauded the state government for its commitment to the education sector....

Politics / Have The Igbo Ever Asked For Power A La Carte? By Olawale Olaleye by ApplesBiteMag: 4:25pm On Aug 08, 2020
Nigeria has continued to wobble through her multi-faceted challenges, and one of the issues her leadership as well as the political actors are unable to pretend about is the place of the 2023 presidential election, which expectedly, is at the heart of all other things, currently.

I’m unpretentiously Yoruba – a proud one at that – and if anything, I’d gladly want to see a Yoruba president, emerge over and over again as the President of Nigeria.

It’s in human nature to feel so selfish. But, ask me honestly, to choose between being Yoruba and Nigerian, and I’d first pick my nationality. I love Nigeria. I can’t live elsewhere. Therefore, I’d be willing to concede anything to make it work.

It may be safe to say the country is presently a shadow of itself. Even as a child, I experienced glimpses of a beautiful Nigeria in the mid and late-80s, although her beauty and allure had begun to deteriorate. The Nigeria, whose other parts we wanted to visit as children, especially having read about them in our books back in school, was colourful; boasted unity, love and abundant resources. It seemed indivisible.

From Warri to Calabar, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, and the swamps of the Niger Delta, the breezy knowledge of what the country looked like on the side was even the more an inspiration for the national youth service exercise, which many always looked forward to.

All that is gone now. Everyone would rather stick to the regional or ethnic nomenclatures, while pretending to be part of the national façade. The love has paled into evident hate. The line is thin ab initio. There’s an increasing oppression and suppression of the minority, such that an average Nigerian would rather they went their ways.

But, hey, how about we handle with some whiffs of hope? How about a sincere and patriotic opportunity at reviewing the principles of the current near failed-state and ponder options that could usher the way forward? I have an idea. How about we start with an Igbo presidency in 2023?

The current strife is majorly about the imbalances in terms of the sense of belonging nursed by other stakeholders in the project Nigeria, a situation that’s necessitated the allegation for marginalisation and the call for restructuring. But we can cut short the trouble, since starting afresh is almost impossible.

The Igbo have been short-changed over the years on account of the prism that power is not served a la carte. But I make bold to say the assertion itself is false, fraudulent and not true with the Igbo, especially.

One, the Igbo have never asked to be given power a la carte and two, you don’t ask someone to go compete for something in a place you clearly told him he stood no chance. You ask them to show strength in one breath, and in another, you say you don’t trust them. Meaning? Which of your trusts have they abused?

First, to address the lack of substance in the claim that power isn’t served a la carte, I want to ask: at what point did those who gained access today do without people clearing the path for them to ascend into office or power literally placed on their lapse? None!

Olusegun Obasanjo was in prison, when they brought him out to run in 1999. Was power not served him a la carte? Even his re-election followed a charade in Ota, Ogun State, when people allegedly went to beg him to come back. Didn’t he get it a la carte?

His successor, the late Umar Musa Yar’Adua was not even keen, when Obasanjo drafted him into the race. Worse still, his then running mate, Goodluck Jonathan pleaded to be left in Bayelsa as governor, but Baba Iyabo dragged them both into the race. How was power not served them a la carte?

Muhammadu Buhari had tried multiple times and failed, because power was not served him a la carte. But he became president, when power was placed on his lapse by a coalition. He didn’t even have his own money to either buy a nomination form or run any campaign, yet, he is running the second half of eight years and you say to the Igbo that power is not served a la carte, how?

Go to the states and see how inter-play of interests and horse-trading made it possible for governors to emerge, many of whom that could not raise N100 kobo for their campaign kick-offs. And you say to the Igbo, go and join a party, form alliances and win. Really? Aren’t they scattered across political parties already? That’s unfair. That’s an anti-Nigerian spirit.

I have come to this realisation and it’s a statement of fact: democracy actually serves power a la carte, because it is usually an arrangement and networking for power to be given to whomever. Only the military struggles and takes power by force. Therefore, we have opted for democracy and should embrace some of its altruistic ethoes without discrimination.

The Igbo are a critical part of this country and deserve to be treated as such. In fact, a critical ethnic nationality of the three key ones cannot be treated as though it is a Second Class citizen. They are not. With the Igbo, the nation holds a lot of promises to the awe of the world. Thus, the irrationality of one or two irredentists among them cannot be used to mischaracterise an entire race. The Yoruba and the Hausa have those too.

This is why we have to rethink 2023 with respect to an Igbo presidency and the future of Nigeria. Fair is fair. They are not asking for power to be thrown at them, but pleading with the rest of the country to support their presidential dream the way they had supported others, including brokering the kind of negotiations that made Goodluck Jonathan come back in 2011 despite being from the minority.

The Igbo man is not lazy. He believes in hard work and is always eager to showcase his industrious nature. He is never afraid to tread, where someone else had failed but challenged to take his chances. He is adventurous and takes calculated risks. He is educated. He is tolerant, generous and compassionate.

He is first a Nigerian. No one, who does not believe in the Nigerian project would ever invest in the remotest parts of this country, despite the prevailing difficulties and not minding potential losses that stare them in the face and that’s the Igbo man. Cut him some slacks, please.

And, of course, the other thing that must be done in the journey to 2023, which would probably be one major thing that many might remember President Buhari for is the enactment of a new and workable electoral law, which would take into account, the defects of the current electoral process and encourage e-voting.

Just maybe, we might be seeing glimpses of the old beautiful Nigeria coming back. I support the Igbo dream so that Nigeria may live yet again.

Politics / July/august Security Operations Update Across Nigeria – Army by ApplesBiteMag: 3:07pm On Aug 07, 2020
In line with our resolve to keep the general public duly informed of the operations of the Nigerian military and other security agencies, I will be briefing you this afternoon accordingly. It will cover 24 July to 6 August 2020.

NORTH-WEST ZONE

The Armed Forces of Nigeria have continued the aggressive clearance operations in the entire North-West zone of the country. Within the period under review, troops in the Joint Operations Area scaled-up kinetic and non-kinetic operations in the general areas of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and adjoining states leading to gradual restoration of overall human activities in the zone. Recall that the activities of armed bandits, cattle rustlers and kidnappers and other sundry crimes hitherto made life unbearable for locals in the afore-mentioned areas. However, through the concerted efforts of Operations HADARIN DAJI, KATSINA, ACCORD and SAHEL SANITY, farmers have returned to their farms while other economic activities are gradually picking up across the zone.

Additionally, within the period under review, troops continued to dominate the general area with clearance patrols, aggressive fighting patrols, raids, ambushes and confidence-building patrols. This is additional to several air bombardments of identified bandits’ locations and hideouts, which has made it possible for the conduct of farming and other activities in the zone. These operations also resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of rustled livestock, arrest of suspected armed bandits informants and collaborators in addition to the recoveries of large cache of arms and ammunition, among others within the period.

SOUTH-SOUTH ZONE

Troops of Operation DELTA SAFE have intensified the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and illegal oil bunkering in the region with attendant successes. Within the period under review, Operation DELTA SAFE discovered and deactivated 25 illegal refining sites in Rivers, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom States. activities amongst others.

As part of non kinetic activities, Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA led a peace and reconciliation meeting with the stakeholders of Gbaramatu Kingdom of Warri South LGA of Delta State. The peace meeting was held following recent threats to disrupt oil and gas infrastructure by the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom. Accordingly, the Naval Base summoned a meeting with the key actors in the agitation. The activists thanked the military for the timely intervention and promised to tow the path of peace. The meeting was fruitful as they promised to do all within their reach to forestall violence in the area. They also solicited for the cooperation of the military in providing security to the general area.

NORTH EAST ZONE

Armed Forces of Nigeria have continued to sustain the tempo in the fight against terrorism in the North East region of the Country. Between 23 July and 5 August 2020, own troops executed various kinetic operations, including clearance operations, aggressive patrols and Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance missions, sustained air offensive operations as well as artillery and aerial bombardments on BHT/ISWAP enclaves. As we engage in our kinetic operations, we also consider non-kinetic engagements in various quarters of the North East. Some of our non-kinetic operations involve humanitarian operations, which Operation SAFE CORRIDOR stands for.

Operation SAFE CORRIDOR is a Defence Headquarters led non-kinetic multi-agency humanitarian operation established by the presidency, designed to De-radicalize, Rehabilitate and Reintegrated willingly surrendered and repentant Boko Haram combatants. In addition to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other Law Enforcement and Security Agencies, 12 other Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies including NEDC as well as local and international NGOs collaborate and support the Operation. The Operation is guided by extant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended) and International Humanitarian and Human Right Laws. It may be recalled that, in one of our weekly press briefings, in which members of the Advisory Committee of the Operation were present, we briefed on the purpose and aim for which Operation SAFE CORRIDOR was established. We also explained the processes involved in the De-radicalization, Rehabilitation and Re-integration (DRR) programme.

It is highly desirable at this moment, to further explain some key points about De-radicalization, Rehabilitation and Re-integration (DRR) programme in order to allay the fears of some members of the general public and reassure that, these individuals were duly profiled and confirmed to be; low risk and not low risk repentants, who were ascertained to be innocent and forcefully conscripted to join the sects and are categorized as victims. Additionally, monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to monitor their activities in the society.

NORTH-CENTRAL ZONE

In the North-Central zone, troops conducted Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities in addition to concerted Reconciliation and Conciliation efforts in the form of stakeholders’ meetings amongst the various ethnic groups in the zone. These non-kinetic efforts were supported by ongoing kinetic operations in the form of ambushes, raids, and clearance patrols at various locations which resulted in appreciable successes within the period under review. Notably, between 30 July and 1 August 2020, Headquarters Operation SAFE HAVEN commenced the survey for the drilling of boreholes at Shimlang community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau state and equally commissioned 2 other solar powered boreholes at Messiah College and Gana Ropp communities in Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State.

Furthermore, between 1 and 4 August 2020, Headquarters of Operation SAFE HAVEN, as part of Reconciliation and Conciliation efforts, fostered several stakeholders meeting within the period under review. Areas covered in this regard include communities in Sanga and Jama’a Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, Barkin Ladi and Bassa Local Government Areas of Plateau State. Meetings were also held at Headquarters of Sectors 3 and 4 of Operation SAFE HAVEN. All meetings were held with the leaders of the various ethnic groups including Hausa, Fulani and Berom amongst others. Issues discussed centred on habitual and peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic groups. Similarly, Headquarters Operation WHIRL STROKE held peace-meetings in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State between the Ardo of the Fulani community and the Tiv leaders in the general area. Discussions centred on peaceful coexistence among them.

Relatedly for the period, troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN also conducted a drug raid operation on 4 August 2020. Accordingly, troops in conjunction with police operatives and vigilante conducted drug raid to Unguwar Mata and New Market General Area in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State following credible intelligence on the activities of drug peddlers in the general area. Troops arrested 7 suspects at the scene and recovered large quantity of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa and other illicit drugs. The suspects were subsequently handed over to police for further action.

The Military High Command commends all the gallant troops of the Armed Forces and personnel of other security agencies involved in various operations across the country for their commitment and professionalism. Troops are further encouraged to remain resolute and decisive in curtailing the activities of terrorists, armed bandits and other criminals. The High Command of the Armed Forces also reassures the general public of its commitment to securing the country for all human activities to strive. Members of the general public are, as always, enjoined to continue providing timely information on the activities of criminals in their various localities to the nearest military and other security agencies location for prompt and effective action. Thank you...

Technology Market / Just In: Suspected Killer Of Gokada CEO Saleh Arrested By New York Police by ApplesBiteMag: 4:02pm On Jul 17, 2020
The personal assistant of Gokada founder Fahim Saleh, has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of the 33-year-old tech entrepreneur.
Saleh's decapitated and dismembered body was found in an apartment in a luxury $2.25 million condominium on Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Tuesday, July 14.

Saleh’s personal assistant, Tyrese Devon Haspil, 21, is expected to be charged in a criminal complaint with second degree murder and other crimes, the New York Times reports.

Detectives believe that Haspil’s motive for allegedly killing Saleh stems from the fact that the Gokada CEO discovered that the assistant had stolen tens of thousands of dollars from him.

Saleh did not report the Haspil to the authorities but set up what amounted to a repayment plan for him to return the money, one of the officials briefed on the matter told NYT.

The police are expected to announce the arrest at a news conference soon.

Investigators have also concluded that Saleh was killed on Monday, July 13, the day before his body was found, and that the killer returned the next day to the apartment on East Houston Street to dismember the body and clean up the crime scene.

As a content creator, student and blogger, sometimes it's difficult to keep up with all the many activities that you have mapped out and trying to handle. It can get so bad that at the end of a very busy week, you feel like you haven't accomplished anything.

Usually, Mondays are great for starting afresh but what happens when the day ends and you can't account for where the time went and what you could have possibly accomplished.

So far, these are my favourite apps for productivity that you probably didn't know about. If you are a workaholic, a budget junkie, a productivity person and live in Nigeria, these apps are perfect for you.

Productivity App #1 Grammarly

The first app that you need is a tool called Grammarly. This app helps to correct grammatical errors on the go from texting to long blog posts like this. Never ever get caught sending error-ladened proposals to your boss or your client or even your crush. What's more? You can even include a plug-in on your browser and use it on your laptop any day. any time. I introduced this app to my former boss and she loves it. Try it today and thank me later!

#2: Forest

The next App you should be using in this time and age when social media is an intense distraction is the Forest App. Every you go, something must pop up on your phone, a notification from Facebook and even a new connection from a stranger on LinkedIn. Even if you are not the social media type, the possibility of you picking your phone when you have a task to do is 90%. A call from your long lost relative might come in, name it. The forest App allows you to set a timer on your phone when you are doing an assigned task. During this time, you cannot use your phone for any other activity. I call it a phone blocker.

Productivity App #3: Blinkist
There are a lot of people who want to read books especially those ones that talk about the history of people and cannot just bring themselves to spend that extra money or even time to read through those hard textbooks. Trust me, I know it's annoying. The Blinkist App allows you to listen to the entire summary of a book in 10 to 14 points or blinks as they are called. Read more whilst on the go and get more productive.

Productivity App #4: Evernote
This app is a total lifesaver. It helps you to keep all your notes organized in one place. You can even create folders for every meeting and it makes for an easy search for all your important meetings. I use it as a journal, church notes and lots more. It can also serve as an Ideas collection portfolio. What's more? You can link it across different devices. Don't sleep on this app at all.

Productivity App #5: Toggl
I recently came in contact with this app. What it basically does is help you focus on one task at a time. Do you know that thing of not knowing where you are spending all your time? This App helps you to time-track. All you need to do is type in the activity you are currently embarking on and let it runs its course till you are done. After a week or two, you can check your analytics and confirm if you spend more time watching TV, on the internet or even making a phone call.

Productivity App #6: Mobillis
This app is for my budget junkies. You need to know where your money is adding more value and how often it comes in. The Mobillis App is a financial tracking app. It enables you to take stock of all the expenses and income that is available to you. Not everyone is able to account for the lowest naira denomination and this app can help you solve that. It also has a budget creation set up that can warn you if you are going over an initial budget you had planned.

Productivity App #7: Datally
Not enough data is something I have struggled with on the go and this app monitor what apps in your mobile phone is draining your data. With the current COVID-19 imbued economical problems we have in the country, data has become expensive and so we must manage the Gigabytes we have. The service providers are busy smiling to the bank with our money whilst providing shoddy network strength. Let's save our data. Use Datally and thank me later.

Productivity App #8: Todoist
Todoist allows you to list out all the activities you want to do and set reminders for them. This app is a monitoring spirit. It doesn't stop reminding you about a task until you click done. So you better be on your toes with those projects. I have mentioned a list of productivity and tracking apps that I use to take my productivity to the next level. And, I hope that you found it helpful as always. Let me know if you found this post helpful. And if you haven’t already, make sure you check out my channel for the full video where I share the tips.

Celebrities / D’banj Seyitan Rape Saga: Former Manager Speaks by ApplesBiteMag: 4:41am On Jul 06, 2020
Renowned artiste management executive and former manager of music star, D’Banj, Mr. Franklin Amudo has come out to clear air on what he knew about the controversial rape allegation involving the Afro-pop singer and a lady called Seyitan Babatayo.
In a lengthy narrative released Sunday and spotted by Apple's Bite International Magazine correspondent, Franklin explained his relationship with the lady in question and his role in the entire saga.

His full statement reads: “I have read and observed the events of the past few weeks concerning the rape allegation made by Miss Seyitan against D’banj, who I used to work with as an artiste manager. For the record, I worked with D’banj for three years and I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and his craft.

“I chose to be silent on the matter initially as I try as much as possible to avoid meddling in issues in the public domain. More so, I deliberately refrained from making any statement or joining issues with anyone because the narration of my involvement as contained in Miss Seyitan’s petition was as far as I was involved.

“I am, however, shocked when I was alleged to have colluded with Miss Seyitan to blackmail D’banj with the rape accusation, especially with the consequent defamation of my reputation and character by a phantom investigative journalist and other social media proxies. It has become imperative to narrate my own side of the story on the event that occurred 30th of December, 2018, at Glee Hotel, Lagos.

“On that fateful day, I invited Seyitan amongst other people to an All-White-Event at Eko Atlantic Hotel. Seyitan and I were seated in a table at this event with Ajia Mohammed and Oyinda, who are friends of D’banj.

“D’banj was billed to perform at the event and he had an accommodation for the night at Eko Atlantic Towers, the venue of the event. I had my hotel...

Politics / Celebrating Sanwo-olu At 55 by ApplesBiteMag: 10:01am On Jun 25, 2020
Proverbs 22:29 states “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” This biblical verse is the true reflection of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who clocks 55 today.
Without any iota of doubt, the 55th birthday of Governor Sanwo-Olu is worth celebrating considering how he has made meaningful impacts in private and public sectors, especially in the last one year of his administration as number one citizen in the Centre of Excellence.

Mr. Governor believes that an occasion of one’s birthday, especially a milestone such as the age of 55, should be a day to reflect on one’s purpose of existence in life and, this according to him, is “to serve the humanity”. Therefore the governor in his charismatic leadership and passion for the vulnerable people decided not to have an elaborate feast for families, friends, political associates and professional colleagues. Rather he has chosen the path of honour and genuine love for the needy in the society by asking people to channel the resources they intend to use for congratulatory advertisements in celebration of his birthday to taking care of the vulnerable people in the society. The governor, based on his passion for the state has also declared his intention to spend the better part of today to attend to many important State matters.

Sanwo-Olu’s gesture is going to bring relief to thousands of Lagosians, especially the vulnerable, whose lives are expected to be touched directly or indirectly by the millions of naira that could have been used for birthday messages for the governor. Sanwo-Olu’s decision is a reflection of his conviction that “the best birthday gift anyone would give him at this period is to identify those at the bottom of the pyramid wherever they reside, lift them up by putting smiles on their faces-that way, they would have lifted his heart too.”

Politics / A Close Shave With Death: An Account Of Prince Segun Akanni Ex Cos To Aare Gani by ApplesBiteMag: 2:26am On Jun 23, 2020
He once walked through the valley of the shadow of death but came out unscathed. Prince Segun Akanni ex- Personal Assistant and later Chief of Staff to Aare Gani Adams, who is the National Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC) and now the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, says he has everything to be grateful to His creator.
In December 2018, he was ‘sacked’ by his former boss Aare Adams, on allegation of ‘dining with his boss’ enemy (Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu)’. Six months later, precisely June 5, 2019, Akanni was attacked in Gbagada, Lagos by a mob whom he suspected were sent by his former boss to eliminate him. Adams has since denied the allegation and has even gone further to institute a legal battle with his erstwhile godson.

It’s exactly a year when Akanni escaped from his attackers, albeit by hair’s breath. To celebrate the first anniversary of the horrid experience, Akanni, The Publisher of The Drum Online Media who has since relocated to Canada to join his family for fear of being attacked again, maintains that his former boss orchestrated the attack and he is still after his life.

In this interview, Akanni who claims he has put 21 years of his lifetime in OPC and 17 as Adams’ Man Friday, bears it all. It is simply as explosive as irresistible!

Excerpts:

How did you feel exactly a year after that attempted assassination?

Sincerely, I don’t know how to thank God for sparing my life over series of attacks against me, most especially that of June 5, 2019, which I will describe as a ‘miraculous escape’. I return all the glory and honor to Almighty God because I would have been dead but for his grace. Every June 5 will forever remain a memorable day in my life. A lot have gone through a similar incident.

You were in Nigeria when this happened. Did you ever see it coming?

Before the attack of June 5, my house in Magboro, Ogun State had been attacked and ransacked twice. I reported the incidents at Ibafo Police Station. The records are still there till tomorrow but the police couldn’t do anything. The good thing was that neither me, nor any of my brothers were at home on the two occasions.

When those two attempts failed, I started contacting some monarchs and personalities who are close to my former boss Aare Gani Adams to talk to him because I knew where the attacks were coming from. I did not get any feedback from them, so I resorted to hiding here and there.

Did you have a premonition?

Of course!

A month before the attack, I got a tip off that Aare Gani Adams was accusing some OPC (Oodua Peoples Congress, a Yoruba socio-cultural organisation which Adams remains a National Coordinator till date) members of allowing me to walk freely, that if it was when OPC was still OPC, Segun Akanni would have been a dead man. I never believed such statement could come from someone I diligently served wholeheartedly for almost 17 years as well as followed blindly for about 22 years with all my life being put at risk.

I called a prominent royal father and told him of the statements he (Aare Adams) uttered. He promised to reach out to him which I believed he did. In the evening of that day, I was attacked in Gbagada, immediately called the same royal father and narrated everything to him, he was speechless. The only comments he made was: “Ahhhhhh, Segun!!! You said there was a plan to attack, now I believe you. Where are you now?” I told him I was still hiding somewhere before going to the hospital....

Health / Waka Medicine by ApplesBiteMag: 3:49am On Jun 20, 2020
"Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being,
while movement and methodical physical activity save and preserve it" - Plato

In Nigeria, the term ‘Waka’ in the pidgin vocabulary means walking or moving. In fact, when you have really “waka’, you are adjudged to have really burnt some calories. Unfortunately, due to urbanization people are no longer ‘wakaing’ globally.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth largest cause of mortality (death) worldwide and it is estimated that obesity will overtake smoking as the largest preventable cause of cancer in the United Kingdom in few years time.

Therefore, the urgent need to tackle the pandemic of physical inactivity.

Consequently, there has been much advocacy for doctors and other health professionals to include exercise counseling as part of routine clinical practice.

In fact, in some countries such as the United Kingdom and the United State of America, doctors are beginning to prescribe exercise for the management of conditions ranging from mental illnesses to cancer.

While it is often assumed that physical inactivity-related illnesses may not be too much of an issue in low to middle-income nations like Nigeria, this may not be founded on evidence.

In fact, due to rapid urbanization, we are beginning to see more people in these nations being diagnosed with obesity-related illnesses such as stroke, diabetes etc.

Often times, what I hear from my colleagues particularly in Nigeria is the assumption that average Nigeria is physically active because of the day to day hustle and bustle in a city like Lagos. While this may sound logical, it is far from being scientific and thus may be misleading. Therefore, there is an urgent need to begin to address lifestyle issues such a sedentary living if we truly want to prevent and manage non-communicable diseases.

In 2017, I was part of a team of medics that conducted a work based health check for a multinational company in Lagos. In the course of the two days health screening, I noticed that most of the workers in that company were obese and had either a borderline type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) or recently diagnosed type (DM).

During my consultation, I discovered that most of them were so eager to get a drug prescription for their conditions; unfortunately, they met the ‘wrong doctor’ this time. I noticed that most of them at diagnosis of DM were not told about lifestyle modification such as being physically active which could have been beneficial in normalizing their blood sugars.

So, my consultation was largely behavioral counseling about the immense benefits of being physically active and also telling them how they can go about it.

Furthermore, the other issue is a misconception of what exercise and physical activity are. Basically, physical activity is defined as any bodily movement that involves the contraction of your muscles.

It entails any activity you carry out in the course of the day that will involve movement (walking, gardening, climbing the stairs etc). On the other hand, exercise is a specific form of physical activity which is planned, repetitive and carried out for specific intents such as developing more strength or flexibility.

To achieve the later, the individual may have to register in a gym or have access to sporting equipment. However, how many people can afford to go to the gym?

Though physical activity and exercise have got immense health benefits, emphasis on being physically active from a perspective of swimming, using a treadmill or lifting dumbbells may discourage people particularly those who don’t have the means to access such facilities...

The initiative which will roll out in the Nigerian cities where Bolt operates will offer emergency escape rides to individuals seeking crisis support who contact either the Mirabel Center or the S.T.E.R Initiative.

Police departments across Nigeria have reported increases in the number of sexual abuse and domestic violence cases since the Coronavirus pandemic led to a nationwide lockdown. Multiple cases of rape and abuse have also gained public consciousness, reopening important conversations about sexual abuse and the need to better safeguard women.

Speaking on the partnership, the Country Manager for Bolt in Nigeria, Femi Akin-Laguda stated that “We want to provide support to the most vulnerable members of our community and hope to bring about positive change by providing support to at-risk women who require transportation from unsafe places.”

“We recognise that there are organisations that are already in the frontlines, educating the public, fighting for justice for our women and providing safe spaces for them. We urge the public to join us in taking a stand against these abhorrent crimes and offering support however possible to these organisations,” he added.

“For us at Stand To End Rape initiative, this is an important partnership because it not only addresses immediate response for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, it’s also a prevention mechanism because women or girls who are in desperate need for help can immediately contact us and get a ride to take them out of dangerous and unsafe spaces. We are very excited about this partnership and we are also excited to be working with Bolt to train their drivers on sexual harassment protocols and how to prevent and respond to reports of sexual harassment”, said Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, Executive Director, Stand to End Rape Initiative (S.T.E.R).

Since 2013, Mirabel Center has treated and supported more than 1,100 survivors of rape and sexual assault in Nigeria whilst helping victims seek justice. Similarly, the S.T.E.R Initiative is a youth-led non-profit that is wholly committed to creating a society that is rid of rape and sexual violence.

My Advice,

If you must go out, see everyone as that COVID-19 itself and wash your hands for 40secs at the least.
Meanwhile, if you insist that Covid-19 is not real, Covid-19 is not in Nigeria or Africa, haaaaaaaaaa well; don’t be shy to ask me questions.

Please kindly say a word of prayer for @lagosstategovt
