WHILE YOU ANTICIPATE its arrival, you can cut your sim. it is best you make use of the specialized sim cutter. most network offices have it.
secondly, when you get it,you can put it on to test it and do some little settings. but make sure you charge it to 100% and leave it for an extra hour or two on the charger if possible while the green light stays on. switch it off while charging too. this is what i did with mine and some of my friends that did the same have found that the battery is actually not as bad as painted. Avoid using when charging. After your 1st full charge, make sure you drain the battery to less than 10% before you plug it again. Try as much as possible not to charge at random times and little intervals when you start using it too. this prolongs the battery life.

Get a pouch for it once it is available and ensure you handle it with utmost care to avoid stories.

I really didn't do all that but I've not really had major problems with the battery so far. At least I get up to five hours non stop gaming (GTA Sa) other apps in the background and 3G on.

The battery is relatively stable. My only issue is that HD games may lag for a few seconds after continuous gaming for about 3 hours though it usually recovers.

N/B. It does not restart after successfully rooting. Just download any root checker to confirm root.
