Islam for Muslims / Trump Hosts First Iftar, Recognizes Islam As 'one Of The World's Great Religion' by ArewaWatch: 12:25pm On Jun 08, 2018

Wishing Muslims around the world a “Ramadan Mubarak” — a blessed holiday — President Donald Trump on Wednesday hosted his first White House dinner for Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, an overture that surprised many in the Muslim community after he skipped hosting such a meal last year.

Speaking at an iftar dinner, which breaks the daylong fast, Trump offered a message of unity, recognizing members of the Muslim community at home and abroad.

“In gathering together this evening, we honor a sacred tradition of one of the world’s great religions,” he told an intimate audience that included Cabinet members and ambassadors from many Muslim-majority nations including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

It was a dramatic departure from the inflammatory rhetoric Trump used during his campaign, when he called for a “complete and total shutdown” of Muslims entering the country.

Instead, Trump spoke of “the renewed bonds of friendship and cooperation” forged with “valued partners” from across the Middle East and said Iftars “mark the coming together of families and friends to celebrate a timeless message of peace, clarity and love. There is great love.”

“Only by working together can we achieve a future of security and prosperity for all,” he said.

Islam for Muslims / Characteristics Of An Ideal Leader by ArewaWatch: 12:20pm On Jun 08, 2018
Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the society in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.

Leadership is a great quality and every great societal success besides other factors owes its credit to the leader who led it to glory.

This comprises small groups, families, organizations, states, empires and even the world at large need good leaders who can lead their respective followers and societies to success.

Every human endeavour needs a unifying and driving force for success and that driving force is ultimately traced to good leadership. It is also worth noting that every one of us in some capacity, sometimes, or somewhere is a leader.

Leadership should not be confused with the role of only those who make headlines but in essence almost everyone have sometimes somewhere, somehow played a leading role.

Leader's Characteristics

The characteristics of an Islamic leader affect how he behaves, and are congruent with the characteristics of effective leader in the Islamic point of view.

Honesty

Leaders are considered honest to the extent that there is “consistency between word and deed.” They do what they say they are going to do. In the Qur'an, the Prophet Musa (AS) is himself labelled as “strong and trustworthy” by one of the damsels (as in Qur'an 28:26) and the Prophet Yusuf (AS) is described as one who is truthful. (Qur'an 12:46)

Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) used to be called Sadiq (the truthful) and Amin (the trustworthy) during his youth.

Honesty and integrity are so important with respect to leaders. Leadership is more than an assignment or a job; it is a trust.

Justice

The Qur'an says: “Allah commands justice, the doing of good and giving (help) to kith and kin and He forbids all shameful deeds and oppression: He instructs you that you may receive admonition.” (Qur'an 16:90)

However, in another Surah Allah says: “We sent Our Messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Measure in order to establish justice among the people…” (Qur'an 57:25). And the Qur'an also says: “O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah as witnesses to fair dealing and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice...” (Qur'an 5:cool

The scholars of the Qur'an have concluded that these rulings apply to all nations, followers of all faiths, as a matter of fact to all humanity.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said: “There are seven categories of people whom Allah will shelter under His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His. (One is) the just leader.” (Imam Muslim). Allah spoke to His Messenger in this manner: “O My slaves, I have forbidden injustice for Myself and forbade it also for you. So avoid being unjust to one another." (Imam Muslim)

Competence

People are more likely to follow a leader's directives if they believe that this person knows what he is doing. If followers doubt the capabilities of their leader, they will be less enthusiastic in accepting directives from him.

Inspiration

Followers expect their leaders to remain positive about the future no matter how bad the situation may be. The leader must never give up or lose hope.

An example of how a leader inspires his followers comes from Caliph Abu Bakr. After the death of the Prophet (S.A.W), Muslims were in shock. Caliph Umar (RA) was especially distraught. Caliph Abu Bakr (RA) calmed him down, and then delivered the following address: “O People, if you have been worshipping Muhammad, then know that Muhammad is dead. But if you have been worshipping Allah, then know that Allah is Living and He never dies.”

Patience

In the Qur'an, Allah explicitly identifies patience as one of defining characteristics of Islamic leadership: “And We appointed from among them leaders giving guidance under Our command so long as they persevered with patience and continued to have faith in Our Signs.” (Qur'an 32: 24)

Indeed, like all other believers, a leader can expect to be tested, and he will need to endure. The example of the Prophet (S.A.W) and early converts to Islam during the boycott of the Muslims in Makkah illustrates the need for patience.

Humility

A Muslim leader is to be humble, and must never let his ego get the better of him. Caliph Umar (RA), the second Caliph, lived in a simple house. He had no bodyguards for his personal security, and walked the streets of Madinah without any escort. Caliph Ali (RA), in his letter to Malik Al-Ashtar An-Nukhai, strongly encourages him to remain humble in his new position as Governor of Egypt, and explains to him why pride and arrogance are to be avoided: “Never say to yourself, 'I am their lord, their ruler, and I must be obeyed submissively and humbly.' Such a thought will unbalance your mind, will make you vain and arrogant, will weaken your Faith in religion and will make you seek the support of any power other than that of Allah.”

The following story demonstrates how the Prophet exhibited patience and humility when others imposed a ban on the Muslims: “When we complained to Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) of hunger and raised our clothes to show we were each carrying a stone over the belly, Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) raised his clothes and showed that he had two stones on his belly.” (Imam At-Tirmidhi)

Willingness To Seek Consultation

Islam stresses consultation in all affairs. Through the Qur'anic phrase “amruhum shura baynahum.” (Who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation), and the Prophet's habit of seeking and accepting advice. The limits on the exercise of power have been set both by the Qur'an and the Prophet (S.A.W).

Shura (consultation) plays a critical role in administration and management, specifically with respect to decision-making; it provides a restraint on a leader's administrative power and authority.

Failure in any one of the aspects will be a total leadership and followership tragedy and both the leader as well as the followers will be held responsible and answerable. Meeting these duties will not only earn one the blessings of Allah the Almighty, but will also fulfil his duty towards his fellow beings, be they leaders or followers.

To meet the leadership challenge both to one's Creator as well as to fellow human beings with sincerity there are certain parameters which must be followed.

(An extraction from one of my books)

This is what Islam offers as a guideline for leadership, therefore, every politician that aspire for dynamic followership must imbibe it to success. May our politicians look to it and emulate it, ameen

It was gathered that a hunter who was assisting the troops was killed during exchange of gunfire.

Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, said in two separate statements he issued yesterday that troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole on Friday neutralised suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Bakin-Dutse area of Adamawa State, following a distress call from hunters.

“The terrorists on sighting the troops opened fire which resulted in an exchange. Five Boko Haram terrorists were neutralized while some escaped into nearby caves. Also, one hunter lost his life during the operation,” he said, adding that troops were on the trail of the fleeing terrorists.

Chukwu further stated that five AK-47 rifles and five magazines loaded with 22-rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition were recovered.

“The public is therefore advised to report any suspicious movements in their area to security agencies for prompt action. Also on Thursday, troops arrested one Saidu Hamidu Jenga, 33, along Maiduguri bypass, Bauchi, in connection with Boko Haram activities.

Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State, on Wednesday, inaugurated Blue Camel Renewable Solar Power Assembly Plant and Renewable Energy Training Academy in Kaduna.

The governor said at the launch in Kaduna that the plant was important to the Kaduna State Government “because we believe that renewable energy and solar energy were the future of the developing world.

“The world today has become mobile, personal, decentralised and aggregated with the rapid drop in components required to make solar energy.”

The governor said that with the present development, every home could generate it’s own electricity, adding that it was one of the reasons why solar project was important to the state and to Nigeria as a whole.

He explained that “today, we laid the foundation for the democratisation of electric energy to every home and every school in Kaduna State.”

According to him, solar energy is the future of electricity supply, it is cost effective and easier to ensure that every home gets supply.

“It is possible and we are going to show that it is possible in Kaduna State because Blue Camel will not only energise street lights but also schools and primary health centres,” he added.

The Managing Director and Founder of Blue Camel, Yusuf Suleiman, said the power assembly plant and training academy was initiated and completed within eight months.

Mr. Suleiman said the rapid completion of the project was achieved due to support of the Kaduna State Government, which provided the company with land within 24 hours of request.

According to him, the project has the capacity to assemble over 10,000 units of different solar products in a year and train over 3,000 youths in different renewable energy entrepreneurship skills.

He said that the company was ready to lead in solving energy related problems across different sectors of the economy.

He, however, revealed that so far, the company had invested over one million dollars and would be investing another five million dollars within 24 months to ensure the delivery of solar generated power to factories.

He added that the development of the projects would help and also impact on Federal Government’s economic recovery and growth, especially in areas of skills and capacity development technology transfer, entrepreneurship and job creation.

The managing director said the project was proof that the private sector was willing to invest if given enough support by government.

He called on agencies and the Ministry of Power to match its drive of incremental power with policies that would encourage local content investment. (NAN)

Politics / I Am Only Interested In The Office Of The President Of Nigeria - Adamu Garba II by ArewaWatch: 1:56pm On Mar 31, 2018

The only office I'm interested in is that of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and nothing less. I prepared for this office for the past 12 years, in the interest of the greater good of this country. The principal stand I'll always maintain till we succeed come 2019.

Many may disagree with some of the policies of the govt, as I did too on many occasions, however, the only difference between us is, while some choose to simply sit back and hate-monger, I stood up to challenge the status quo in the interest of the greater good of all of us. I express on many occasions that I don't believe venting anger or frustration or hatred is what we need in Nigeria, neither is it the solution to our challenges.

As someone contesting to be the President for all, I should do everything to represent the whole and not the part of Nigeria. I'm not altogether in this contest to seek political power but to deliver greater good for my country. I'll thus, never hate or condemn any Nigerian just for the sole interest of winning an election.

I love & will represent all Nigerians regardless of their shortcomings. I have not ever compromise on the principle of the greater good for common humanity, I'm free with my conscience in this contest.

My real & only interest is the greatness of my country Nigeria. With this, I always act in such interest & will continue to do so till we achieve that. If you can trust some of my methods thus far, on the programs to fix this country, you should know that my decision to join the All Progressive (APC) was born out of critical research and credible intelligence that APC is the way for all of us. It is the party we should belong to.

APC is the only truly democratic party that if we come together, join the party, we'll be guaranteed of a credible primary election. I know most of you maybe afraid of loosing, I am not, because I know fear itself is the lost. Just trust and follow me, I'll win for us.

As I mentioned, as responsible young Nigerians we cant disown our elders for who they are, we should seek to be better than them. This is a sign of any progressive society. I choose to march forward for progress with APC to the primaries.

Politics / Why I Choose To Contest Under A.p.c - Nigeria's Youngest Presidential Aspirant by ArewaWatch: 12:59pm On Mar 30, 2018

"It may surprise alot of people that am contesting for Nigeria's presidency under #APC Political platform. But if you want to fix the country (Nigeria), if you want to address the issues that we have, the identity crisis, the supply line challenges, joblessness and all other things. We need to preserve our precious institutions, part of our precious institutions is our Democratic Institution.

If you check from the first republic of Nigeria, the same political parties are the same parties that metamorphose into what gave rise to the second republic, the same political parties metamorphosed into Third Republic, and now we have the republic that we are in, which is the Fourth republic they are the same political parties.

So, I don't believe that the entire political parties structure is bad in Nigeria. What I believe is, the people inside the political party are making it look bad.

So, if we truly want to win election, we have to associate with the platforms that are actually carrying out the institutional history of our Democracy.

Which I believe the APC and PDP have these relevant histories. So, we cannot altogether see APC or PDP, because these guys are bad because they have stole, they do this, they do that and then we stay from the pathway and start pointing fingers and then say they are bad, and then we need to go to another party, we are not doing the right thing for the country's history.

We need to preserve our precious monument by putting the right people inside those platforms. So if you truly want to make change, you start from a political party.
And the second thing is that, my own candidacy for the Presidency is not on the premise of becoming the president for the young people and all those young ideas because I have a superior manifesto.

And I believe if APC adapt that manifesto its going to transform the entire country especially under my leadership. And that is why our contesting is not for the young but for everybody.

I don't want to confront, and am not confronting our elders, I believe there are serious responsible people among them.
I believe that we can disagree in the same parlour as a common people than when I stay from outside the window and start pointing fingers to the face of my elders....."

Politics / 2019: Why I Want To Be Nigeria’s President – Sule Lamido by ArewaWatch: 9:18am On Mar 23, 2018

A former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, on Thursday said his presidential ambition was not out of desperation for power, but for genuine service to the people of Nigeria.

Mr. Lamido made the statement in Lagos during a meeting with members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

He said his decision to contest for the number one seat in the country was out of commitment to fix the country and reposition it for greatness.

The former governor said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had not done well in government, and so must be flushed out in the next election.

Mr. Lamido said the country had not fared better in security, economy and anti -graft war, on which they anchored their manifesto.

He cited the herdsmen killings and the resurgence of Boko Haram atrocities as some of the failings of the present government.

Mr. Lamido said the abduction of Dapchi schoolgirls, who were eventually returned, reflected the lack of capacity of the present government government to ensure security.

He urged the PDP to put its acts together to defeat the APC in 2019.

“We in the PDP should put our acts together and ensure we flush APC out in 2019.

“God would judge us if we allow the APC to return to power,” the ex-governor who is being prosecuted for corruption, said.

Mr. Lamido urged the would-be delegates to the PDP national convention to look out for merit, consistency and loyalty to the party in choosing the party’s presidential candidate.

He said he was eminently qualified to pick the party ‘s ticket as he was consistent, committed and an avowed member of the PDP.

Mr. Lamido thanked members of the Lagos PDP for the warm reception accorded him and thanked the party chairman in the state for facilitating his coming to Lagos.

He said he once worked in Lagos and felt at home being with the PDP family in the state.

In his comments, the state party chairman, Moshood Salvador, said members were delighted to have Lamido in their midst.

He said the high turnout at the reception showed how much members loved him.

Mr. Salvador dismissed the insinuations in some quarters that PDP was divided in the state.

He said the fact that party executives across the state were at the reception meant that PDP in the state was one.

“PDP is not divided in the state. All the council excos are here. Everybody is here. The party is not divided.

“Whatever bad people are saying about the party in the state is nothing but all lies,” he said.

Mr. Salvador said he had done a lot to reposition the party since he was elected, and the spirit in the party was very high.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Lamido was accompanied on the visit by former Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onomalemen, among others.

Politics / ICPC To Declare Jang Wanted Over Alleged N5.6bn Fraud by ArewaWatch: 9:12am On Mar 23, 2018

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it may declare former Governor of Plateau, Sen. Jonah Jang, wanted for refusing to honour its invitations.

Indication to this was given by Spokesperson of the commission, Mrs Rasheedat Okoduwa, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. She said that Jang was being investigated over alleged fraud involving about N5.6 billion, but that he had continued to evade invitations to appear before the investigating team.

According to Okoduwa, the Commission has been on the trail of the former governor, now a senator, since October, 2017, when it opened investigation into alleged corruption-related activities during his tenure. “Evidence before the ICPC so far indicates that Sen. Jang allegedly committed the offences in March, 2015. “He allegedly received N2 billion in cash illegally out of the money which was allocated to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), under the pretext of a loan to be spent on ‘classified expenditure’.’’

She alleged that the former governor also illegally received N400 million of funds meant for Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). She added that Jang also allegedly caused a former Commissioner for Finance in the state to illegally transfer N3.2 billion of SUBEB funds to the project account of the Ministry of Finance.

“ICPC has sent several invitations to Jang through both the Senate President and the Clerk of the National Assembly to come and clear his name but he has refused to honour the invitations. “Also, efforts to procure an arrest warrant from two different Magistrates’ Courts in the Federal Capital Territory have been futile.

“The magistrates declined to sign them even after the requisite sworn affidavit had been presented by the Commission. “In the light of the foregoing, the Commission may have no other option than to declare the former governor wanted,’’ Okoduwa said.

I have this questions for my muslims brothers and sisters. I do not see christians at the grave yard of senator wakii.

I can only see muslims politicians. where are the christian politicians at the grave yard?

does this mean that christian are not allowed or permitted to attend the burial of a muslims?

If you are a muslims please throw more light on this aspect.

We are all here to learn.

Anyone can attend the funeral of a muslim. As far as Islam is concerned, when it comes to funeral, there are absolutely no religion boundaries as long as the ones attending will adhere to the burial ceremony code of conduct i.e. Maintaining silence throughout the whole ritual.

Look closely, you will see Yakubu Dogara in the pic, he is a christian. I am sure there are many more non-muslims in attendance.

Politics / Our Industrialization Policy - Adamu Garba, Nigeria's 2019 Youngest Presidential by ArewaWatch: 9:53am On Mar 11, 2018

We used to have what was Africa’s fastest growing economy but today we struggle to sustain the economy. Recently, Nigeria experienced an economic recession which caused lots of damages, lots of jobs were lost and till date many Nigerians have been unable to recover from the losses incurred.

We recognize that this is a problem that can re-emerge in the future and our plan is to implement industrial policies that can prevent this.

In Abuja today, we have people in government parastatals enjoying the dividends of others who are working in other states. We plan to have a system that has all hands on deck. We’ll be discontinuing the “Geo-political zones” we have today and we’ll implement “Geoeconomic” zones. We will employ a strategy whereby, 9 states will be urbanized, especially the states across our shoreline. States like Cross River, Bayelsa, AkwaIbom, Rivers and Lagos will be urbanized and these states will also serve as our shoreline energy production zone. The purpose of this is to economize our shoreline effectively, this way the Lagos ports becomes less rowdy and operations can run smoothly through other shoreline states.

Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, Borno and some parts of Kano and Jigawa will become our inland energy production zone.

Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Osun, and Ekiti states are agricultural zones. We are going to tap into the agricultural resources we have in these zones and make the most of it, we are not going to embark on small scale agricultural projects but major projects that can yield returns enough to boost our economy by a wide margin.

Our plan is to implement an agricultural policy that will facilitate large scale agriculture for industrial purpose.

We recognize that the creative industry is a multi- billion dollar industry in today’s world and we know that we have many creative Nigerians from musicians to actors, writers and other forms of entertainment and this sector won’t be left out of our industrial policies. Piracy is the biggest problem faced by the Nigerian entertainment industry and we plan to put a complete stop to this criminal act. We plan to implement strong copyright rules and establish an effective task force to bring pirates to book.

By means of this, content produced by Nigerians will be protected and the actors will get the right dividends for their investments. A structured entertainment industry will also attract foreign investors and this will put our entertainers in the forefront of marketing their indigenous content to the world.

It is not new in Nigeria to see old and retiring entertainers begging to be crowd funded to cater to their health needs, we plan to put implement an effective health scheme that can cater to our entertainers after they retire or grow old.

Politics / N13.5M Monthly Illegal Allowance: Lawmakers Angry, Plot Against Whistle-blower by ArewaWatch: 9:23am On Mar 11, 2018
The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has angered a number of his colleagues for lifting the veil on the N13.5million illegal allowances members of the upper legislative chambers receive each month in addition to their legitimate salaries and allowances.

Some lawmakers who spoke to the press but asked not to be named said the revelation by Mr. Sani has damaged the reputation of the federal legislature while possibly pitting constituents against their representatives.

The aggrieved senators and members of the House of Representatives said some of their colleagues were already discreetly working out modalities to deal with the Kaduna lawmaker.

Mr. Sani had in an interview with TheNews revealed that he and his colleagues receive N13.5 million monthly as “running cost”, aside a N700,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances which they also receive.

Mr. Sani’s revelation is the first by a lawmaker from the Senate since the clamour by Nigerians for a full disclosure of lawmakers’ earnings.

The revelation has sparked widespread anger among Nigerians who had always criticised the lawmakers for arbitrarily allocating jumbo pay to themselves at a time the country remained in dire need of funds for developmental projects.

Ironically, Mr. Sani’s colleagues are criticising him for coming clean on the secret allowances lawmakers receive while majority of Nigerians wallow in poverty and disease.

Some of the lawmakers said the revelation has the tendency of turning their constituents against them.

They said the revelation might instigate their constituents to make more financial demands from them

The lawmakers vowed to take necessary steps to make the next one year difficult for the Kaduna senator.

“He has brought his useless activism to the chamber creating the impression that we are all thieves without telling Nigerians details of what the money is used for ,” one lawmaker said. “There are are always ways of dealing with characters like that. Just wait and see.”

Part of the punishment the angry lawmakers are considering is to pressure the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to exclude Mr. Sani from subsequent ‘secret meetings’ of the senate.

They plan to prevail on Mr. Saraki to stop inviting him for such meetings, especially those where finances might be discussed.

The lawmakers are also weighing the option of recommending a probe of the whistle-blower to Mr. Saraki.

For them, Mr. Sani would have to explain why he turned himself to the senate spokesperson, speaking on behalf of others

If adopted, Mr. Sani would be investigated by the senate’s ethics committee which shall recommend a punishment.

But some lawmakers are cautioning against any open rebuke of the senator, saying that might generate even more public anger against the Senate and its members.

Many Nigerians, including civil society organisations have commended Mr. Sani’s action.
However, if eventually probed and found guilty by the ethics committee, Mr. Sani faces up to six to 12 months suspension.

In March 2017, when the former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume asked for investigation of allegations of importing a bullet proof range rover with fake documents involving Senate President Bukola Saraki and that of perjury involving Dino Melaye, the committee recommended 12 months suspension.

The suspension was later reduced to six months by the lawmakers.

Similarly, in the House of Representatives, a lawmaker from Kano, Abdulmumin Jibrin, was suspended for 180 days for revealing what is today known as budget padding.

His suspension was recommended by the House Ethics Committee which also prescribed that Mr. Jibrin will also not be able to hold any position of responsibility for the span of the current National Assembly.

Contacted on Saturday, Mr. Sani said he preferred not to comment on his colleagues’ moves. He promised to make comments if the need arises in future.

Politics / Our Energy Policy - Adamu Garba, Nigeria's 2019 Youngest Presidential Aspirant by ArewaWatch: 12:17pm On Mar 10, 2018
Every progressive economy relies heavily on a powerful and sustainable system of power generation. This is a major determinant of a country’s level of productivity, such that poor generation automatically results in poor productivity levels.

As a country, Nigeria is richly blessed with energy resources, with about 5.284 Trillion Cu M of proven Gas reserve, abundant solar energy in our northern savannah and over 2 Billion Metric Tons of coal in sites deposited in Enugu, Delta, Anambra, Kogi, Gombe and Benue States. It is inexcusable that these resources are untapped while we focus on crude means of power generation.

Ideally, the means of power generation we rely on today known as Hydro power was intended for short term service, currently with the continuous increase in population and industrialization we ought to have advanced to better sources of power generation that meets/exceed our current demand.

Our policy aims at improving power supply by leveraging natural resources such as gas, coal, solar and wind. We intend to build a heavy pipeline across the country to leverage upon our abundant deposit of gas. We also propose to make use of the coal in Enugu to improve our supply of power. Up north, we are going to leverage solar energy and wind power.

Over the years, billions of USD have been invested into power generation and it is a shame that we are yet to boast of 6000MW supply.

We’ve carried out proper survey which forecasts that with Hydro and Thermal Stations to be deployed, the energy policy we propose can produce over 50,000 MW of electricity in 5 years and our strategy is to urbanize about 9 states in Nigeria especially the states across our shoreline. States like Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa and Lagos will become our shoreline energy production zones. Up north, we’ll have our inland energy production zones supporting the shoreline zones.

Politics / Women’s Day : Going Beyond The Norm To #pressforprogress - Atiku Abubakar by ArewaWatch: 3:22pm On Mar 08, 2018

On this special day, I join everyone around the world to celebrate women. In a place like Nigeria, the efforts of women are usually most acknowledged in the household—and, indeed, we must never take their efforts on the home front for granted. However, the International Women’s Day offers us a great opportunity to go beyond the home front and celebrate women everywhere: in the household, at the workplace, or in the field.

I celebrate women like Dr. Ola Orekunrin, a medical doctor, helicopter pilot and healthcare entrepreneur, who founded Flying Doctors Nigeria, West Africa’s first Air Ambulance Service that is breaking new grounds in bringing trauma care to the remotest parts of Nigeria and the sub-region.

I celebrate Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, who contested as a member of the House of Representatives when she was just 35 and with a new baby. Today, she is one of the longest-serving legislators. I celebrate the all-female team of athletes who represented Nigeria in the just-concluded Winter Olympics in South Korea, making history and breaking barriers.

I celebrate women like renowned artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of the popular Nike Art gallery in Lagos; Rabia Salihu Sa’id, a physicist, professor of atmospheric and space-weather physics, and a researcher at the Bayero University, Kano; Mrs. Itoro Eze-Anaba, anti-rape activist and founder of Mirabel Centre, Nigeria’s first sexual assault referral centre.

Of course, it would be impossible for me to mention all the women shining as stars in the spheres of business, government, arts and science. Space will also not permit me to include in this short piece, women making a mark in other spheres of influence beyond these. This is just a taster, to remind us Nigerians what is possible when women have opportunity and support.
But the question is always asked, why do we celebrate Women’s Day?

For over 70 years, since the late 19th century, almost every established secondary school was exclusively for boys, with the exception of the Methodist Girls High School, Lagos. Schools like CMS Grammar School, Hope Waddell Calabar, Bayero College, Ibadan Government School and King’s College. For decades, the only opportunities for education and advancement were only available to men, meaning women had next to zero opportunity.

While it seems opportunities are available for everyone in present-day Nigeria to aspire in career, business, and politics, the fact that men had over half a century of advantage still shuts women out, because the meetings where deals are sealed in business and politics are to a great extent skewed disproportionately to the disadvantage of women.

This is why we must make it a point of ensuring women get the opportunity to catch up. For as long as women don’t catch up, nearly 40% of our productive population will not be able to make a significant input in the economy.

Up till this day, women are the biggest sufferers when war strikes. The North East is an example. When men go to war, its women who suffer the brunt. Women also bear the worst effects of negative cultural practices, whether it is early/forced marriages, or being shut out of an inheritance.

My first daughter, Fatima, is a doctor. My wife and I stood against pressure from family and friends to insist she must finish her degree – today, she is a celebrated doctor and humanitarian, providing help to families at the grassroots around Adamawa and the North East. If we all support our daughters, wives and sisters, who knows what great accomplishments could come out of it?

Despite the immense hurdles women face from culture and prejudice, look at what they have achieved. Imagine if we allowed all our women to flourish and to thrive, without restricting their dreams and opportunities with man-made shackles. Imagine how much more women will accomplish for Nigeria and for each and every one of us.

Nigerian women have been longtime achievers. There are many established names that have beaten the threshold in areas women were once relegated to the back seat. But the real heroes are those unsung mothers, sisters and daughters who go the extra-mile in dignity to make things work in the household. Theirs are examples that there are no barriers to how high any woman can go with determination.

On this women’s day, I ask all men, fathers, religious and political leaders to join together and act as humans to improve the lives of women.

Politics / How Gov Wins Kaduna Teachers’ Hearts by ArewaWatch: 3:08pm On Mar 08, 2018

The Kaduna State Government recently announced salary increment for public primary and secondary school teachers to perk up their attitude to work and awaken their interest in student discipline and control; particularly in the classroom. The government also upgraded ageing classrooms and pledged to make available supportive resources and facilities for teaching and optimal learning.

In the new arrangement, teachers in the rural communities where truancy is said to be on the rise will earn higher compared to their urban counterparts to avoid teachers skipping school.

Prior to the increment, teachers grumbled about government’s resolution to push out thousands of their colleagues found to be incompetent.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, said teachers’ salary had been increased by 32.5 per cent; explaining that 27.5 per cent would be added to all teachers’ salary while the other five per cent would serve as incentive for teachers posted to rural areas.

Sani also announced the provision of accommodation and motorcycle loans to teachers in the rural areas.

He said, “While head teachers would be given three-bedroom flats each, other teachers would get two-bedroom flats each with motorcycle loans to ease their transportation.”

While the state government, through the Ministry of Finance and the Budget and Planning Commission are still working on the modalities of the pay rise for teachers, Sani again, last week, announced tax waiver for all teachers in the public service.

He said Gov. Nasir el-Rufai has approved that effective from March 2018; all teachers in the state would no longer pay the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax.

“The tax has been waved so that it will have an impact on the increment of the net pay or take home pay of the teachers. Our teachers will experience increase in their salaries from the month of March because the PAYE element will not be deducted by the accountant general. This is just an interim measure until the new salary structure is out; then they will commence the payment of the tax,” he said.

“Government is really committed to improving the welfare of teachers employed under the state just as the newly recruited teachers will come on board with significantly higher salary than they would have received if PAYE was not waved,” he concluded.

Teachers in the state serving in public schools have happily embraced the development but like the doubting Thomas, some of them contacted seem unconvinced and declined to comment until the promise have been implemented. While they acknowledge the development as an incentive to motivate teachers to perform better, they prayed the government to ensure quick implementation.

A secondary school teacher said, “It is a nice development; we are happy because we will have better take home, but we want to see it implemented,” noting that many people were leaving the teaching profession because of poor pay and the fact that teachers were not being appreciated.

Another teacher in Kaduna North Local Government Area, who also pleaded anonymity, said the salary increment and tax waiver remained a political statement until they were implemented and sustained.

He, however, urged the state government to ensure payment of arrears owed some teachers, as well as leave grant.

He said, “It is good news and a welcome development; it is one thing to increase salary and it is another thing to be consistent in paying it. We also want the state government to provide teaching materials and a conducive environment for learning so that we can have a complete transformation.”

Governor El-Rufai, recently in a meeting at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), assured the teachers their pride would be restored, noting that under the new reform, teachers could now progress up to Grade Level 17.

Gov. El-Rufai said, “We have just waved the PAYE for teachers because we desire to pay them higher than other civil servants. We will also make teachers in the rural areas comfortable by providing accommodation and ease transportation for them. All of these policies put in place will be of no use without quality teachers,” he said.

2. Deinstitutionalize religion and ensure its continue the tradition as cultural private affair not influencing political decisions and divisions.

3. We will, if elected, remove all religious houses from Aso Rock Villa and ensure religion of the presidents is not issue of national discourse.

4. As president if elected, I will ensure to never appear publicly in any gathering or groupings that have religious coloration or with any particular religious leader.

5. In our foreign alliances, we will ensure TRADE and only TRADE form bases of our negotiations and not the easts or the wests or Israel or Palestine.

The journey to our national reawakening is in progress. We all have a role to play. With ALL OF US, we still have a dream.

Crime / Kasuwan Magani, Kaduna Clash: Police Arrest 18 As Death Toll Rises To 12 by ArewaWatch: 12:09pm On Feb 28, 2018
The death toll in Monday’s communal clash at Kasuwan Magani in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State has risen to 12, while 18 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

A team from the Kaduna State Security Council, which visited Kasuwan Magani, confirmed the cessation of hostilities.

The team, led by the General Officer Commanding, I Division Nigerian Army, Major General Mohammed Mohammed, included Commissioner of Police Austin Iwar; State Director of Department of State Services Mohammed Wakil; Commander Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, AM Bunu; Special Adviser on Internal Security, Col. Yakubu Yusuf (rtd) and Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the Kaduna Governor, Samuel Aruwan,

The GOC, while speaking to leaders of the community, tasked religious and traditional leaders to deepen the message of peace and integration, and warned residents against undermining and destroying the four decades of togetherness and peaceful coexistence in the area.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Iwar, who also briefed journalists, confirmed the arrest of 18 persons, adding that they were undergoing interrogation while security presence is being strengthened in the area.

Iwar said 11 victims of the crisis were “buried around 12 midnight” while one person who sustained injuries later died at the hospital on Tuesday.

Our correspondent, who was in Kajuru, noticed that the centre of the town, which has the market and business places, has been deserted with only burnt structures littering the area.

There were also several burnt vehicles left by the road side.

Iwar said no stone will be left unturned in unravelling the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.

The commissioner said the police were aware of “skirmishes” in the area two weeks ago and had made some arrests “but we did not know that there was a grand design to carry out massive destruction as it happened”.

The police on Monday said seven people lost their lives in the fracas while 15 others were injured.

NYSC / Corps Member Donates Borehole Hotoro Community by ArewaWatch: 12:03pm On Feb 28, 2018
A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mercy Okoduwa has donated a hand pump borehole to Hotoro Mahauta Community in Nassarawa local government area of Kano state.

Speaking at the commissioning of the borehole, Mercy said she was initially planned to drill the borehole at Nassarawa local government’s coppers lodge in Gwagwarwa quarters.

She said, “I have made four attempts to construct the borehole but I could not actualize my dream for some reasons. One of the reasons was that feasibility survey indicated that there is no adequate water in the area. Some NYSC officials advised me not to give up and therefore I started looking for another community in need of water and in the process, I discovered that Mahauta community is one of them.”

On his part, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Baba Ladan represented by Director of Community Development Service (CDS), Mrs Sarah Kure, commended Mercy for the gesture, saying the project was significant because “water is life”.

Ladan explained that the corps member had enhanced the health status of the community by providing them with a source of portable drinking water.

“The management of NYSC also thanked all those that supported Mercy in executing this project because without their support she could not achieve her goal. The NYSC in Kano is willing to support any corps member that wants to execute a project that would impact on the lives of people,” she said.

The coordinator urged members of the benefiting community to ensure maintenance of the facility and appealed to other corps members to emulate Mercy by making impact on the lives of the community they were serving.

He also called on the people of Kano state to render financial and moral supports to any corps member that was willing to carry out humanitarian projects in the state.

Politics / How To Reduce Religious Violence In Nigeria – CAN President by ArewaWatch: 11:56am On Feb 28, 2018
The Federal Government should introduce inter-religious education at all levels of education to reduce religious violence in the country, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said.

According to a press statement it issued, this call was made Tuesday by the president of CAN, Samson Ayokunle, in his paper ”Interreligious education and common citizenship values” delivered in Vienna, Austria at an Interfaith Seminar organised by KAICIID.

Mr. Ayokunle who traced the incessant religious riots in Nigeria to the absence of History, Civics and Inter-religious Education in schools, called on all religious groups and the government to wake up to their responsibilities in this regard if ”religious violence will become history.”

“In those days in Nigeria when we used to study history and civics in primary and secondary schools, basic knowledge of at least Christianity and Islam were taught, but today, when history is no longer taught, Inter-religious education has become more difficult,” he said.

“This to an extent may be responsible for a surge in religious violence more rampart now in Nigeria. All religious groups in Nigeria in particular and the globe in general must make concerted effort towards government’s inclusion of Inter-religious Education in the schools curricula.”

According to him, “All over the world, the current trend is that educational institutions – colleges, universities (many are not religiously affiliated!) and even certain seminaries – are actively looking for ways to respond to the issues of education in a religiously multi-faceted world.

“They seek to entrench a transformational process through which students could be educated to become global citizens with an understanding of the diversity of religious traditions and with strategies of pluralism that engage diversity in creative and productive ways. Obviously, inter-religious education is increasingly essential for equipping people to be citizens of the world.

“Therefore, from a societal as well as pedagogical points of view, all academic institutions irrespective of their theological affiliation or inclination should be obliged to foster a religious dimension to citizenship.”

Mr. Ayokunle, who is also the president, Nigerian Baptist Convention, said Interreligious education contributes effectively in the formation of ”people’s and societies’ religious identities, as well as in shaping perceptions about the other.”

”It douses the tension of stereotype or resentment against other peoples’ religion which causes distance in relationships. It increases beneficial inter-relationships and widens the student’s family network. Religiously bi-literate or educated people who know the history and theology of other religions are likely to have better grasp or understanding of world politics, history, culture and literature.

”Inter-religious Education gives students or people ample opportunities to make informed decision in adulthood of the religion they have the conviction to practice in life. Inter-religious education reduces religious conflicts and promotes mutual co-existence. Inter-religious education gives in the opportunity to see the world from more than one religious perspective and make better informed decisions,” he said amongst other factors he listed in the paper.

Politics / Boko Haram Leader Shekau On The Run, Dressed In Hijab, Says Army by ArewaWatch: 6:38pm On Feb 13, 2018
The Nigerian Army says factional Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, ‎is now on the run, dressed as a woman wearing either a black or blue hijab.

He is said to alternate between blue and black coloured hijab to avoid detection, the army said.

He was last seen in a black hijab, according to information gathered, said director of the Army public relations Brig-Gen Sani Usman‎ in a statement.

“While concerted efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fugitive terrorist leader, we implore also members of the public, especially the residents of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States to be more vigilant, security conscious and be on the lookout of Abubakar Shekau and other terrorists that might disguise as women to escape.

The army says Shekau on the run is the result of concerted of troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on the ongoing clearance of the Boko Haram terrorists through Operation DEEP PUNCH II.

According to him the exercise was yielding tremendous results as the troops have successfully been clearing Boko Haram camps in Sambisa forest including Camp Zairo.

‎He also called on the remaining Boko Haram terrorists to know that they are following a coward moving about in hijab disguised as a woman.

He then urged all the remaining Boko Haram members to come out from hiding and lay down their arms so that they may be treated humanely.

Speaking about Shekau, the army said, “He is desperately trying to escape the theatre disguised as a woman dressed in Hijab. We reliably gathered that to avoid detection Abubakar Shekau alternates between blue and black coloured hijabs. He was last seen in a black hijab.

In another development the troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE have continued their clearance operation against all known hideouts of Boko Haram terrorists within the large expanse of Sambisa forest as part of the ongoing Operation DEEP PUNCH II.

According to a statement signed by Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, the‎ deputy Director Public Relations of Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE, the troops ‎ dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from one of their highly fortified hide outs at around S-Shape part of the Sambisa forest.

He explained that the location was also believed to be one of their prized location.

He added that during a fierce offensive which was supported by Nigerian Air Force, against the terrorists on Monday 12th February 2018, the resilient troops neutralized quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists and captured major armaments, including 2 Spartan Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 1 Canter truck and 1 Laptop computer belonging to the insurgents.

The gallant troops also destroyed 8 Gun trucks, several makeshift accommodation and tents. Similarly, the troops rescued 19 women and 27 children from the erstwhile terrorists enclave. The highly motivated troops remain dauntless as the operation continues.

Politics / Buhari Won't Save You In 2019, PDP Tells APC Governors by ArewaWatch: 6:58pm On Jan 14, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said President Muhammadu Buhari would not save the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors from crushing defeat at the 2019 general polls.

The opposition party said APC governors have been rushing to Abuja to meet Buh‎ari in order to have soft landing because of their poor performance, adding that Buhari himself would be "inevitably" defeated.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan also challenged the APC to immediately test its popularity among Nigerians by conducting free, fair and credible local council elections in states under its contro‎l.

The party said Nigerians have re-connected with it because of the inability of the APC-led government to deliver good governance.

"Instead of facing the people, APC governors who are now scared stiff of the looming disgrace awaiting them, are busy running to Abuja for help, forgetting that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Presidency will also face an inevitable crushing defeat in 2019.

"The APC knows it cannot face the more than 8 million Nigerians it has rendered jobless with its reckless policies. They know that judgment awaits them from thousands of workers who were unjustly sacked in the states where APC governors rule, particularly Kogi and Kaduna.

"The APC cannot also return to the states where countless helpless families' breadwinners painfully paid the supreme price due to untold hardship under their misrule.

"The party also knows it cannot return to the families of those slaughtered in Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Borno and other parts of the country by marauders encouraged and emboldened by the indifference of the federal government and the unguarded comments from unpatriotic Presidential aides.

"We all know that the APC is mortally afraid of going into any election, particularly at the grassroots, as Nigerians across board are bitter with them for their deceit and the wrecking of our once robust economy.

"Nigerians are also at pains over the poor welfare direction of the ruling party which has resulted in the penetrating hardship now being suffered under the APC controlled federal government.

"The APC is petrified because Nigerians have renewed their interest in the PDP as the only genuine people-oriented party. This new thinking among Nigerians has been clearly demonstrated with ‎PDP’s sweeping victory in Osun senatorial bye election as well as the recent local council polls in Ekiti and Delta states.

"Today, the APC knows it cannot go back to the same electorate it scammed in 2015 with lies and empty promises; promises of bogus jobs, monthly stipends, free meals, free houses, reduction of fuel price, bringing the dollar to the same value with the naira and other phantom promises," the PDP said.

Politics / For The Love Of Nigeria - Atiku Abubakar by ArewaWatch: 6:30pm On Jan 14, 2018
Once again, it is that time of year set aside for us Nigerians to honour members of our country’s Armed Forces who fought in the first and second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War and those who served or are still serving in different theatres of war, notably the Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria.

While many of us took time off from work and other preoccupations to be with our families over the Christmas and New Year holidays, many Nigerian soldiers and members of other security agencies were in the front lines, ensuring that we were safe, protecting our lives and property, especially in the light of the security alerts over the threat of terrorist bombing during the celebrations. While we ate and drank, they were lying in the trenches, watching out for and poised to quench any sign of trouble. Some have been away from their families, not just during the holidays but for months on end. Some have yet to set eyes on their newborn children.

In addition to these are those security personnel missing from the dining tables and warm embraces of families and loved ones, not because they were in the frontline but because they have fallen in battle. They made the ultimate sacrifice: giving their lives that the rest of us may live in peace and safety. They died that we might live.

Unfortunately, the frequent headlines about Boko Haram and other violent attacks in the northeast and other parts of Nigeria can submerge the gallantry of our security personnel. As we all know, good news is hardly regarded as news. Little is heard or read about the exact numbers of soldiers who die in the defence of our country. Hardly anything is told of their acts of bravery and their moments of exceptional valour.

I recently was informed that on Wednesday, January 10, our gallant Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole deployed around Gamboru Ngala successfully averted what would have been a major devastating suicide attack to be carried out by three female Boko Haram terrorists against innocent citizens in Gamboru town in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State in the early hours of Tuesday.

I admire the bravery of members of our armed forces, and celebrate their hard efforts to keep us safe. My prayer on this day is to see a time soon when the guns and the armoured tanks lie idle because we have no more battles left to fight.

My hope for our country is to see a time when neighbours of different tribes and tongues saw one another as brother and sister, when Christians and Muslims regarded each other as one under God who created all, when citizens could express opinions and grievances freely, then there would be no need for insurgency or uprising. We would all live together in peace and harmony. And, yes, our armed forces would have little to do!

We must never take for granted the great sacrifice that these brave men and women have made or are making. We must never forget them or their loved ones. On this Armed Forces Remembrance Day, I call on Nigerians all over the world to show respect and love to our security personnel by showing respect and love to one another. When we all live in peace and unity and love, we not only enable steady development and progress in our great country, Nigeria, but we minimise the unnecessary pain, grief and loss of life among our beloved armed forces, who have bravely signed up to keep us all safe and secure. Our fallen heroes and their families are not the only ones who suffer. We all are victims of those who do not want our progress and development and perpetually pit one ethnic or religious group against the other. It is time for Nigerians to remember to say no to divisions and acrimony caused by people with only their selfish interests at heart.
