I feel the gurus should share their experience in Norway. Let's hear their tales and deduce from it. I know everyone's kinda busy doing one or two but a summarized anecdote would help us especially we the prospectives for 2021, the incoming students of 2020 and the future applicants.

Thanks in anticipation!

Good evening Arinze.

pls I want to know whether PhD students are mandated to present IELTS ?
Secondly, how's PhD program generally in Norway?
Thanks
Hei!

From the best of my knowledge, it depends on the individual institution. Some does ask and some doesn't. Moreover, I'm not in Norway, I'm just a prospective student. All I know about their PhD program is that PhD students are paid cos they're regarded as an employee and it makes one qualify for a PR after your PhD program(because you've paid tax to the govt). Also, you've 5yrs min post secondary education upon applying for a PhD programme( that's 3yrs bsc and 2yrs MSC). There are some conditions you've to fulfill to get your PR which is the language proficiency (Norwegian).

Moreso, I believe you need to research on the programs that has a PHD pathway and your research statement/plans aligns with ur prospective supervisor . Their contacts and gmail account are readily available on each school's website..It's up to you to research more.

Additionally, I shared a link in the previous thread for PhD and post doctoral openings.

Best of luck!

The schools are
NTNU and University of Oslo,
I am thinking that as black students, it will be better I focus on the capital city of Oslo for ease of integration and students job
What is your school choice and what was your reason for the selection?
Lol nice thought BTW. I chose UiS, Nord and NMBU. Stavanger is a cosmopolitan state likewise Oslo, touted as the oil capital of Norway -and I definitely love where it's situated (south western) and trucks of tourist sites to catch fun and down stress. I kinda love UiS programme syllabus for my preferred course,It aligns with my ephemeral and long term goals.

Ultimately, I pray we find favour and grace. All on God!

No problems! I got your back and other prospectives too! If I may ask, which schools did you pick?

Also I have been seiving through program that has partway to PhD.
I don't know if it is proper to send mails to schools for further information on this or do independent search on my own
You can do a further research which broadens and broadens your knowledge and you could also send a mail to the stated school to get a first-hand information. They're in the best position to guide you.

Additionally, on PhD pathway, if it was stated that there's a further study option, then there's a further study option. No worries Man!

Cheers!!

My reasons for leaving are personal. All I can say is that Canada is a much better place for me.

Norway is a very beautiful country, not as cold as Canada during the winter, but a very boring place to live in because Norwegians are naturally boring people. Language barrier is a problem as well.

No rules per se, just do what is right irrespective of who's watching so we don't give the country a bad name.

When you get to Norway, you'll meet Nigerians and get to adapt quickly.
Talk with Nigerians a lot because that'll be your easiest route to finding student jobs and getting to know your options during and after school.
Roger that!! Thanks for the hint.. We all shall engrave it in our hearts...

God bless!

Nice to know that my contributions have been and are still helping people on the thread.

Yeah, I still generally check stuff on Nairaland and it doesn't cost me anything to pop in here occasionally if there are new issues I can help answer.

For your question, I mind just a little bit but no problem.
Basically, I worked in Norway for a while before moving to Canada where I live now.
Yeah,we appreciate your input way back 2013 or 2014 perhaps which has been(and still) stupendously instrumental to all and sundry. You said you worked in Norway briefly and then migrated to Canada. I know these questions are kinda subjective but give us tips:
1) why did u have to leave Norway for Canada, was it 'cause of the lingua franca spoken at work places? Pls give a reason(s)
2)how was Norway generally? Your experiences with Norwegians and in Norway at large. Was the experience worth it? Pls could you shed more light cos we all are naive
3)what advise will u give to intending students like us from a Nigerian perspective. The Dos and Don'ts. What we should take note of and what to expect?

Thanks in anticipation!

So I've made my research as regards cgpa grading system in Norway

I realised that Norway has C+, C, and C-

however I can't tell if the C's I see as a requirement is the neutral C

Or it is for C+, C and C- collectively

I tried to convert Nigerian cgpa to Norway but I didn't get any clue so I had to quickly searvh for Norway cgpa vs American cgpa scale

Perharps it will be easier to get Nigeria vs America

So what I did was to convert my Nigerian cgpa to America then compare it in the American scale to the Norway equivalence

The following screenshots will help
This is stupendous! Nice Nice

Can one get a visa just for the preparatory course ? I dont mind following that route to start over again
From the best of my knowledge, I think a preparatory course is the course/study one takes to fulfill a certain requirement before commencing the main course or programme. If I'm right, residence permit is given to a student staying More than 6mths and if yours falls under that category. I think you're eligible for a visa. You're Green to go!

skål!!!!

Thank you bro , i tried checking the link above ,but i didnt see anything relating to international law , i was planning on doing master in internatonal commercial law, which i can use to apply for PHD on something like that still there since i heard its easier to get than to get a proper job as i can't practice with my foreign law degree there , advice a brother bro..
Foremost, I think you should check if there's a PhD pathway for MSC in International and Commercial law. If there's a further study, then go with your MSC International and commercial law. The advise to you is let your research plan tailor/align with a professor's or a post doctoral area of specialization/research. That makes them willing to work with you cos they're interested in new findings to their research.

My platinum advise to everyone that wants to further his/her studies after MSC is simple. The easiest/flexible way is to ensure that your MSC degree has a PhD pathway or further study options. Hence it makes it easier and swift for you. The lecturer knows you already and your capability.

Best of Luck!

Hello all i want to take a one year preparatory course in university of bergen then after the course i will study law but the medium of instruction is norwageian, please is the language hard to learn?
and is it easy to get a job in norway?
and please concerning visa with all the requirement how possible is it to get a visa
If you're tenacious, it shouldn't be difficult learning though it's not easy learning. I opined you enroll for their Norwegian language classes. Universities offers Norwegian language classes and it's kinda rebated for students. When you enroll and see foreign students like you enthusiastic to learning the language,it will facilitate your learning process.

For jobs, hope and trust in God! We all have different destinies. Their employment statistics and job market is appealing but remember it depends on the person,A might go there and burgeon and B might go there and not. It's all on God!

On visa, when you tender all demanded, you ought to get the residence permit. Make sure you provide all that were asked on the checklist and all are authentic.

Best of Luck!!

As a PhD student in Norway and other Nordic countries, you're paid for being a PhD student.. You're somewhat regraded as an employee of the institution. There are T&Cs for you to sign before it..

Regards to easy admission, you can't juxtapose it with MSC admission process and besides their MSC application is not really easy.. I recently saw some openings for prospective PhD students which I'll share here :You can go through it and perhaps check Norwegian universities websites respectively and focus on their PhD programmes.

That's redenominating. They removed 4 zeros from their digits to make it flexible for them. Prof Soludo tried replicating that policy whilst he was still the CBN governor but it was rejected by our law-makers..

[quote author=Dumebi213 post=92525012]Go through the thread, you'd see reasons why borrowing the money is not ideal

Norway has a highstandard of living and things are expensive especially when you start doing what every Nigerian does abroad "Converting to naira", it may take weeks to months to get a job, someone on this thread said he didn't get a job until after 6 months

What do you do during that period?

Swears! Can't advise anyone to do that. It's disastrous.

Hello gurus in the house,

Pls help examine this scenario, If someone borrowed the money, deposit the money in the account, gotten student visa, arrived Norway and completed the account opening process. After some time, since u have access to the funds, is it possible to send the money back to the lender in naija probably within a few months of staying in Norway
Someone said you'll be given all the money once you've opened a bank account over there.
TravelRe: Nigerians In Oslo, Norway by Arinze01(m):
After amortizing the loan in one instalment, what happens to you over there. You become a burden over there or voila! You get a self-sustaining student's job immediately you get there or within those few months you mentioned. You better re-strategize carefully.

From the best of my knowledge though I'm not in the country yet but some institutions pay you the allowances monthly and some does otherwise. Deductions would be made for students dues/literature and also accommodation therein.

My advise to you if you're going to study, maximize on it. Don't be in a hurry to hustle when you get over there, concentrate most on your studies and networking. Prolly, after you've done excellently well in your 1st semester and achieved a wonderful GP, you can go-ahead and hustle. Mind you learn the basics of the language.

Lol you intend traveling to Norway for studies and you don't know if it's tuition free..it's saddening tho... www.studyinnorway.com is the website to use to check for ur desired programs and respective requirements

Nonetheless ,it's tuition free ,no scholarship except Erasmus for social works or governmental scholarship sponsored by your govt. Prolly read from thread 80-100,you'll understand better and ask entertaining questions.

Good Morning everyone!

I literally admire our zeal, commitment and spirit. It's second to none. We haven't even applied for enrollment/admission nor have we even gotten admission and arriving at Norway already.. We have all skipped those processes and here we're discussing about their language. I like the feeling/vibe. I feel we're kinda united and going as a Big FAMILY. It shows we're tenacious and pragmatic. That's awesome!! I hail una.. By this time next year, we, Norwegian hopefuls shall all be in Norway discussing how we started lol,Amen!!

Anyone that has questions to ask,or confused in any point vis-a-vis Norwegian university application process or requirements, can freely ask me questions, I would gladly help to the maximum of my knowledge. I feel we should assist each other during the application process-and hopefully Nigerians' acceptance rate this coming admission period would be higher. Newbies, feel free to ask us questions.

Have a peachy day ahead!
