Use Mysql if the site already has an existing Msql database (currently running), but if not u can kick off with any. They will all serve u well. But Mysql has been really good in handling data for large scale projects.
Don't be carried away by all this Firebase matter if u don't know how to work with it well.

Start learning new backend languages. You need it to solve problems. Website is beyond login, logout, user, admin. There are website related projects that need you to bring in a new backend language. That is why most versed developers hate PHP.

Bro! U can make it wherever u find yourself, the fact u already have a land already fenced and ready for construction purpose shows u have gone far but why try live everything to go somewhere else and start at 0 with the aim to reach 100 when u are already 20 in where u find yourself.
I won't say much but when u live I want you to know that;
A man u saw in a 1 room apartment before u live might own a house of his own before u are back/u eventually come to check things out here,

Some people knw php but can not use the language to build application.

If those who know only python or Ruby or any other languages out there will follow your saying they will be super good in their field.

Why do some developers look down on other developers who know just PHP, Jquery and Ajax after learning languages such as Python and other frameworks such as Vue and React and so on?
And this developers who know just PHP, Jquery and Ajax have built projects that is running and gives them some income, projects that look beautiful. But when u look at some projects been built by these other developers who know Python or Vue or React u tend to see their projects lacking a good and user friendly UI or systems that lack a user friendly validation in their forms and so on...

Why?

The fact u learnt something new doesn't mean u are very creative with it.
Sometime last year I was reading an article online about something like this and a user said

"If you have a 6 years experience with PHP and you want to build a project with it there's a tendency u won't spend more than a year building it, but making the decision to learn a new programming language like Python or any other language to build this project of yours will make u spend more time on your projects and this may take u more years before knowing Python like PHP".

This doesn't mean your project won't work nor does this mean your project can't be hacked nor secured.
There are developers who have built projects with the little they know and have made a lot of money not because of the language they used but because of their IDEA.

If Facebook was built with Python or Ruby it will still be what it is today because of the IDEA!
If Twitter was built with Django or Flask Web Framework it will still be what it is today because of the IDEA!
And so on...

To me, as far as am concerned, programming is all about your IDEA and not the language you use.
So the fact you just learn Python, PHP, Ruby, Vue, React or any framework doesn't give you the right to tell any developer that he/she is wasting his/her time on bla bla bla bla...
Not all developers want to be an employee, some want to achieve their dreams buy building something great because they have an IDEA.

So to all developers who are working on something great, keep on moving forward till you achieve your goal.

I think we need to understand something here. Nairaland is an idea, to me it doesn't matter what your project was built with but what the IDEA is all about.
As far as am concerned, more programming languages will rise and if we as developers are unable to build something innovative with what we have learnt we will keep on been the consumers...

So the fact anyone has learnt Vue, React, Python or any language out there doesn't mean he/she can...

Cloud is cheaper than dedicated... you pay for dedicated server whether you use or not. But cloud server is pay as you go. If your site is not experiencing traffic, you don't pay... Do more research online tho

first your traffic will determine the type of hosting you will go for else you will be wasting money on unused resources.

cloud hosting should be an option if your site has heavy traffic.

normal vps can serve you for a start. there are some cheaper vps server that can serve you until the site started gaining momentum.
