https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDvoar90SnY President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the prudence and accountability employed by his administration in managing the Nation’s affairs are creating the impression of prosperity whereas reverse was the case. The president stated that Nigeria was a poor nation and was in severe shortage of resources. But he said that the commitment to transparency and accountability were paying off. The President spoke Thursday at State House, Abuja, while receiving the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director and Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin. President Muhammadu Buhari chats with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director and Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Dr Babatunde Osotimehin during a meeting with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) team at the State House in Abuja. “It has been a very difficult year for Nigeria. Before we came to office, petroleum sold for about $100 per barrel. Then it crashed to $37, and now oscillates between $40 and $45 per barrel. Suddenly, we’re a poor country, but commitment to transparency and accountability is not making people know that there is severe shortage,”he said. Asking UNFPA to bear with Nigeria in whichever area the country could not live up to its responsibilities for now, President Buhari said exploding population and different cultural practices in the country provide fertile ground for research to organizations like UNFPA. The President however thanked the UN agency for its commitment to saving lives in Nigeria, particularly of women and children. On food security, President Buhari said reports from the North-East of the country were encouraging, as people were returning to their farmlands, with the guarantee of relative security. A statement by his media aide, Mr. Femi Adesina stated that Professor Osotimehin who was also a former Minister of Health in Nigeria, said UNFPA was determined to promote health care facilities across the country, noting that reduction of maternal mortality was doable, if the country paid more attention to access to health facilities, and human resources to run them. He also encouraged Nigeria to commit to providing resources for health care, on a rollover basis, pledging that the UN would work with the country to provide humanitarian assistance not only in the North-East, “but even extended to the Lake Chad basin.” Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/nigeria-poor-country-accountability-not-making-people-know-severe-shortage-buhari/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meSXVuivelM The Chief Whip of the House Of Representatives finally responds to the allegation of budget padding against him and the other principal officers of the green chambers. During an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, Mr Alhassan Doguwa described the allegations as being frivolous and baseless. The former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin, had filed a complaint that four principal officers of the House of Representatives – Speaker Yakubu Dogara, his Deputy, Suleiman Lasun, the Chief Whip Alhassan Ado Doguwa and the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor were involved in the padded the 2016 budget. “Legitimate Responsibility” It is now a week since Honourable Jibrin spoke exclusively to Channels Television on the allegation that the Speaker of the House of Representatives has dismissed, saying padding was not an offence. On Sunday, however, Honourable Doguwa insisted that no matter what the lawmakers did on the budget, none of it could be regarded as a crime. “When you expect a legislator to work on a bill, certainly he has the constitution and supreme right to deal with that bill at any level, whether in first reading second reading or general reading. “At whatever level the legislator engages a budget, he is doing nothing but his legitimate responsibility,” he explained. “Enemy To The Institution” The lawmaker said padding was strange in context of the 2016 budget and that all the allegations made by hon. Jibrin were frivolous “That is a strange word to me. “It is a crime for you guys to be calling legislators ‘paddlers’. It is a speculation. Baseless speculation,” he said. The Chief Whip further referred Hon. Jibrin as a cancer in the legislative system of Nigeria’s National Assembly, insisting that that was why he was removed as the chairman of the p propriation Committee. “He is an enemy to this institution, an enemy to the system of democracy in Nigeria and our own great party, the APC Mr Doguwa , however, assured Nigerians that there would be a perfect budget in 2017. |
