Technology Market / Re: Does Upwork Really Work? by Arthurmillz(m): 11:12pm On Feb 28, 2020
Bloggingscope:
@arthurmills 2 proposals are too small to land any job as a newbie withoiut any badge or review cool

Be more strategic with your proposals and send more to job posts with little budget

Thanks for this. I try to go for the jobs with entry level experience knowing I wont yet get a chance on expert level without a job score etc. I noticed I need 'connects' to be able to send proposals. A little baffling I must say
Technology Market / Does Upwork Really Work? by Arthurmillz(m): 8:17pm On Feb 26, 2020
I am a Graphics/web designer and I would like to try out a freelancer platform. I feel Fiverr is too saturated. Has anyone worked with Upwork here? I'd like to know if you when you submit proposals you actually get responses? I have submitted two and I yet to even get a notification that my proposal has been seen.
Also is there any issue with the app or the desktop version better.
Lastly is there any better platform I can work jobs from faster?
Phones / Re: Airtel And Their Dubious Ways In Siphoning Our Money by Arthurmillz(m): 9:23pm On May 03, 2018
CaesarDon:
I have been an airtel subscriber for more than 10 years now and honestly I was satisfied with the service and call rates compared to their fellow network competitors, when mtn started sending this unsolicited alert dialog pop up messages with the aim of swindling customers, by just pressing ok, I was happy I didn't join the bandwagon of mtn subscribers, and I started preaching port to airtel to my friends and family that were subscribers of the mtn network, but with the turn of things with regards to using devious means to rob we customers of our hard-earned cash, I wish I was the one that ported.

I always excercise extreme caution when operating my phone, so I wouldn't fall victim of their dubious bunco antics, but they still device a way to fleece me of my hard earned cash even without subscribing.

Airtel were deducting 10 naira on a daily basis from my account for more than a year for nothing and I mean nothing, and this is no daily access charge, I didn't take note cos it was just 10 naira, but 10 naira times 20 million plus nigerians on a daily basis,u can picture the amount. I had to call their call center agent and he admitted I was on a service I didn't subscribe for, with no benefits.

The push came to shove the turn of this year when they started deducting money from my credit balance via their mobile connex, soccer15, sms chat services to mention a few, if I load credit before I close my eyes VOOM!! my credit is gone, without even subscribing for any service, I have called their call center agents which they made almost impossible to reach, consistently like 10 times in the past month and I just get apologies with no refund.

The beauty of their fraud scheme is that they make sure they siphon all your credit at once and can make u a subscriber of 10 services to rob me of my money and they subscription is like a endless loop as shown below they keep trying to subscribe u to that service and other services even after subscription which is evident below

If I even want to work on the premise that I unintentionally subscribed for a service how did it become 6 services as shown below, and the funny part is angry that I don't even receive the message for the so called services they subscribed me for, Airtel is a scam

I have been patient with their agents that give the most flimsy excuses, but the straw that broke the camels back was today when all the credit on my phone was siphoned when I wanted to call for someone for an emergency, if the person in question, dies trust me airtel lawyers would be hearing from me soonest, cos I'm cock sure I have not been the only victim of their scam
I honestly thought I was the only one going through this rubbish from airtel. It's the height of wickedness angry
Mine is always like 50 naira or 20 naira and up to 4 different subscriptions which I know nothing about. And immediately after I deactivate it's reactivated. And no I do not press ok on any popular like some people will say :|

This is also an option. But better you do a monthly maintenance. What if the uploads are few. Thinking 30k a month is not bad. She might price though.

Advice her to employ someone to do it as her business operation. She might say no. Bet she would realize there is a value to your extra time. Bill her like you were employed to do it. Also send her a project completion letter with your terms for future uploads. Letters are important. Print and deliver and acknowledge.
This makes sense. I appreciate

There should have been a product upload limit with the service you rendered or better still 'maintenance' for a period of time or you offer to teach her how to.

Okay sure but subsequently what is the best way to charge after the limit has been passed or how do I charge for maintenance including product upload

Romance / Re: Why I Left Her And Have No Intention Of Going Back by Arthurmillz(m): 11:57pm On Feb 21, 2018
ItzChinnex:
So I stopped replying her messages on WhatsApp because she was too over demanding.

I once met this Girl in the room of my guy when she came to charge her only God knows what, then I fell partially in love with her. I collected her number and I started courting her on WhatsApp which she consented.

In the space of 1weeks, she demanded for airtime which I innocently sent her an amount of N1500. I believed we where flowing not until she asked again in a space of 5days, not that I hadn't the cash to send but I was just trying to use my common sense by telling her I will send but not immediately.

It was during this time I had a rethought about this and stop replying her messages on WhatsApp. We didn't communicate for about 2 months not until yesterday, she called me and said that she was angry with me for not contacting her for a long time. She said I should come to her hostel to see her.

I decided going to the hostel because I had in mind that after I see her, I will go to my guy's lodge around that area.

Before i reached her hostel, i branched to a bank around my area but the crowd was enormous, I had to see her like that because I can't wait.
When I reached her hostel, i entered, she was on bum-short. She was like, where is my Valentine gift, I told her when I would be going home, we will branch to the bank, that I had no cash right there with me.
Her mood suddenly became gloomy but she didn't wanted making it oblivious.
She asked if I would eat, I said no, she started using indirect means to make sure i lavish on her. Our conversion was like

She: My phone is really bad
Me: oh, really?
She: yea.. It's a techno phone
Me: oh, nice phone.
She: but I can't use it because it's bad, I need a new phone
Me: No response*
She: you can get it for me as a Val gift.
Me: lol.. Yeah sure.
She: please let go to the bank now, Diamond bank is very close
Me: The line is to much, I can't stand under the sun
She: You will wait here, I will go for you
Me: C'mon I can't give you my Atm
She: OK, you have Mobile App right? Please transfer some money for me so I will buy the phone
Me: I don't have a Mobile App
She: OK.. What about your sim? I can transfer with your sim, hope you registered your acct with this sim?
Me: no, I didn't

I waiting for like 5min, and all she was talking was Money Money Money. I felt some uncomfortable And I told her to be ready That on Saturday, I will send her the money and even take her out. I Collected her account details and boom, off I go.
I think, today would be the very last day I would chat or even communicate her again.

My brother, I'll give you my honest advice.

No.1: No matter what you do, stay away from the east as much as you can. Ignore at your own peril.

No.2: My dad is an estate surveyor here in onitsha and he still regrets not moving over to lagos or abuja when he had the chance.

No.3: I'm a computer scientist so I think I can help u analyse this situation. As a graphic designer, your opportunities are endless. In the world of today, the digital way of doing things has taken over giving way to things like digital marketing etc.

If you use YouTube on a regular basis, you would've noticed that almost every video starts with an advert. These are adverts from companies willing to pay video animators and editors huge amounts of money to create very compelling and creative adverts for them.

My advise: Expand your knowledge, learn more about photography, video editing and animation. Be very excellent in these. You can even open up your own advert agency where you create very nice video ads for companies and get paid.

Pro tip: You can even align yourself to digital marketing agencies. They need people like these a lot and outsource them a great deal. Prove to them you're good at what you do and watch your business grow
I totally agree with this. I'm a freelance graphics designer currently developing myself in 2D animation with Adobe after effects even though I studied Geology. You just inspired me to put in more effort! It certainly feels more rewarding

Hello guys, my name is Fabian, a graduate of surveying and geoinformatics, now a graphic designer. I have worked with many companies here in Lagos. Companies i have worked with. i got through this forum. Thanks to Nairaland.

I want to switch back to what i studied but i am confused. Last month i went for an interview on the island, after the interview, the HR of the company told me that he would advise me to go back to the east and practice my profession because surveying is very lucrative there. On that note, he didnt give me the job haven passed the interview.

The HR said he too studied surveying and he is regretting why he didnt practise but advices people who studied same to go practise.

Because of this, I am now thinking if maybe i am wasting my time in what i do since what i studied as he said is lucrative.

Please i need advise on what to do.

Mr. Seun, please help me. I really need your advise and the advise of others.

Thank you.
Bro can you link me with any of the companies you worked as a Graphics designer? Will really appreciate

MRS FLORENCE SERKI MFR, Group MD/CEO, Omatek Ventures Plc, has used the Stock Exchange- Omatek is the first ICT company in Nigeria to be listed on the NSE, utilized joint venture opportunities, the Small and Medium Enterprises Equity Investment Scheme (SMEIS) and other creative options to fund her goal of accessing digital empowerment for Nigerians and Africans in general. Today, Omatek is rated as one of the fastest growing ICT companies in Africa and is actually a flagship that Nigeria is proud to flaunt. CACHE spoke with Mrs Florence Seriki at the 17th Convocation Lecture of Lagos StatePolytechnic (LASPOTECH) where she spoke on The Implications Of Global Economic Recession On Information Technology And Industrial Advancement In Nigeria. She also commissioned Omatek Resource Centre and Laboratory at LASPOTECH after her address.

Her simplicity is disarming. During our interaction with her, Mrs. Florence Seriki reduces the story of her success to a simple conversation on vision, focus and ethics. This piece is from a 2008 interview with the now late Mrs. Florence Seriki:

Investment / The Rmrdc Places Much Importance On Value Addition -dr. H. D. Ibrahim, Rmrdc by Arthurmillz(m): 10:35am On Nov 14, 2017
The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) is an agency under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology established to promote the development and utilization of Nigeria’s industrial raw materials; based on the recommendations of a workshop on industrial matters organised by the then Federal Ministry of Industry, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Nigeria Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) in July, 1983. It commenced operations five years later in 1988.

The results of the Agency’s work over the years have never been needed as they are today when dwindling oil revenue forces the nation to look inwards and develop her natural resources that had been ignored for a long time because of a dubious ease occasioned by Petro-Naira. Today, the need for diversification of the economy, import substitution, identification, processing and utilisation of locally available raw materials have made RMRDC a dependable repository which the nation consults for information on how to build her comparative advantages to competitive levels through value addition. CACHE interviewed the Director General and Chief Executive of the Agency, Dr. H. D. Ibrahim, after an auspicious event, the AGJES, which they co-sponsored with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and other organisations on their current priorities, achievements and prospects; and brings you these highlights:

Affordable mini refineries can be established to break the jinx of the giant mentality that has continued to stall the establishment of more refineries to serve the needs of Nigerians. It is hoped that readers who have the financial capacity to give this area a shot would not hesitate at making the most of the information in this package. The challenge of ensuring that more Nigerians participate in the development and distribution of her oil wealth is certainly a front burner issue today; especially as huge amounts of scarce resources are daily drained into fuel importation which saps the nation of valuable foreign exchange.

At the ebb of 2009, Nigerians faced excruciating transportation difficulties occasioned by an unprecedented scarcity of petroleum products. Since then, many have vociferously demanded for answers to why the nation’s refineries would not perform as expected to meet the needs of the people. Even Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in her recent ministerial screening in July 2011, expressed her perplexity before the Senate over the situation...http://www.cacheonline.com.ng/

The acceptance and use of plants and roots for cure and control of ailments has suffered a chequered fate- from the ancient times when they were the only remedies known to man, to the time when they were treated with suspicion and considered as fetish, to contemporary times when man is revisiting herbal remedies because some germs have developed strains that are resistant to modern antibiotics. Besides, the dangerous side effects of some orthodox drugs now cause doctors to question the benefits of prescribing them at all. This has created a window of opportunity for herbal medicinal packages to come gain acceptance in hitherto highly intolerant quarters.

Today, traditional medicine is universally accepted as an alternative source of Medicare. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognizes Traditional Medicine as ‘including diverse health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plants, animals and or mineral based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises applied singularly or in combination to maintain well-being, as well as to treat, diagnose or prevent illness’. A good case for indigenous medicines is that considering the prevalence of mosquitoes, if Africans did not have their own remedies for malaria before the advent of the white men, the first white people who came to Africa would not have met any living soul. NNMDA facts and figures have it that over 85% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa and about 80% of Nigerians patronise Traditional Medicine. For most of these people, it is the only known source of healthcare delivery; IT IS AVAILABLE, ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE. In many parts of Africa, the number of traditional health practitioners far outnumbers that of allopathic doctors. To buttress the reach of TMPs, statistics show that we may have a ratio of 1Medical Doctor per 20,000persons as opposed to 1: 200 for TMPs. The National Demographic and Health Survey Report (NDS, 1999) indicate that 63% of births in the country is handled by Traditional Practitioners.

According to TamunoOkujagu, Director General of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency, NNMDA, “Specific figures or percentage patronage and national spread of traditional bonesetters and traditional massage therapists are not available, but it is a known fact that they play key and increasing roles especially in view of high number of accidents and fractures occasioned by the increased use of motorcycles as a means of transportation. It is estimated that 70-85% of fractures and trauma injuries are managed by this category of traditional healers”. In 2008, the then chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Food and Drugs Administration and Control Agency, NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili frowned at the proliferation of herbal medicinal packages and their misuse of NAFDAC registration numbers. In her statements at the time, she said that the medicinal packages had only been certified safe for human use but were yet to pass tests for efficacy.

This represented another plus for the herbal formulations since the maximum control Agency had even come to recognise their existence and certify to the harmlessness of some of them. It was now left to the consumers to decide whether they were getting cured by those medicines or not.A survey I personally conducted at that time in Lagos amongst the educated class showed that they all believe in the efficacy of local herbs, especially for primary healthcare. Recently, the Minister of Health, Professor OnyebuchiChukwu, announced that the Federal Government is working on incorporating traditional medicine studies into medical school programmes in the country.

All these prove the acceptance of herbal medicines in the country. “We are documenting Medicinal plants in Nigeria in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) procedures. The documentation includes the scientific names, names in the local languages, medicinal uses in the local communities, conditions for cultivation, phytochemistry and other potentials. This is for teaching and learning for students of pharmacy, Botany and all those who wish to use plants for healthy living as well as for conservation and cultivation. It is also a key resource material for Traditional Medicine practitioners for use in their formulations and entrepreneurs who wish to go into herbal drug formulation”, says the NNMDA.

A good Percentage of Modern Drugs is Plant Derived and World Health Organization estimates that there are about 21000 plant species with Medicinal Value and a good percentage of these are believed to be available in Nigeria with our vast Biodiversity and Bio-resources. This is therefore an area of cache waiting to be unearthed by discerning entrepreneurs, especially because many Nigerians now spend huge sums on imported herbal brands from America, Europe and Asia. Interestingly, some of those formulations are prepared with herbs sourced from Nigeria!

Cultivation of local herbs as a deliberate and focused business venture is a viable foray. It is a specialised area of agriculture that would yield good returns not only for supply to local herbal medicine manufacturers, but also for export. This is one more area where entrepreneurs can tap into to create new wealth and generate employment. All the present-day herbal medicine manufacturer need do is to shed the old garb of mysticism, seek information, embrace contemporary best practice rules and adopt attractive packaging. These done and we too can sell our herbal preparations to the rest of the world. The market is brimming with potentials!
