rogerdavid:
Visa approved today.
Here is my transcript :

vo: hi, good morning
me: good afternoon

vo: can i have your passport…and your i-20
me: ok, here they are
(vo types for few seconds)

vo: so, what are your studies plans?
me: i intend to go for my doctorate degree in physiology and neurobiology….this will expose me to in-depth research skills in liver physiology and research methodologies used in liver research like co-immunoprecipitation, polymerase chain reaction….so i will be joining prof.xxxx whom i met here in Nigeria last year, in his research…(cuts in gently)

vo; do you have a bachelors degree or masters..or you are going straight to phd?
me: I have a masters already

vo: where did you do your masters?
me: university of ibadan here in nigeria

vo: so, phd in physiology, right?
me: yes, physiology and….(cuts in)

Vo: what will this do for you?
me: it will expose me with strong research skills needed..by identifying important genes that determine susceptibility to hepatotoxicity.., i will be able to fulfil my career goals. and i have two major goals: to come back to Nigeria and take up a lecturing job in one of our public universities. secondly, i intend to, on the long run, collaborate with research institutes like the national biotechnology development agency…(gentle nods and cuts in gently)

vo: so, this prof you mentioned is prof…?
me: prof Bleep. I met him here in Nigeria during a conference..

vo: ok, prof Bleep (looking into his computer)

vo: can i have your..program..admission letter?
me: ok, here they are (and he studied intently for a while, flipping through the 3-paged attached documents- offer and 2 GAship letters)

me: (filled the ‘awkward’ silence) the revised GAship letter was sent to me upon the realization that i had a masters degree…so the only difference is just the figure of the amount

vo: ok…. you have a bachelors degree in ?
me: biochemistry

vo: so your biology must be very sound?
me; yes

vo: ok, what is mitosis?
me: it’s a biological occurrence that describes the division of cells. and the time taken for a complete cell cycle is 24 hrs…whereby a cell divides into 2 daughter cells and the multiplication goes on and on…

vo: what about meiosis?
me: just like mitosis, it describes the division of cells…(cuts in)

vo: alright. you know, not so many people know these things..i just wanted to be sure…

vo: how will you be paying for your studies?
me: i was awarded a graduate assistantship which covers full tuition waiver and offers a generous stipends. In addition, i am also in touch with my uncle who is willing to support.

vo: what does your uncle do?
me: he owns a business here in Nigeria and he imports and sells building construction materials. i have his statement here as proof

vo: alright. you will need this to pick up your visa. here is your i-20 and documents.
Me: Ok. Thanks

VO: From your i-20 (searched for the commencement date for about 5 seconds), you will not be permitted to enter the states before August since the start date is august 29.
Me: ok

Me; (elated that it was over) when will i pick up the visa?
vo: you will find the information on the sheet given to you.

me: ok. thank you
vo: alright. have a good day

Thanks to all everyone in the house for your immense contributions and counsel. You all made it happen.

And so, my tiny little advice for potential applicants: it's okay to be nervous but do your homework well and have a convincing reason for wanting to go to the US.

I tap into this in Jesus name. Amen
Congratulations

Good day great people, thanks to all the people in the house. I cant deny the fact that this thread has really been helpful to me, if though i have only posted maybe 2 or 3 times. My visa was approved at 11.03 at the Lagos embassy, today. Ultimate thanks to God.
Woke up around 2:30am in the morning, said my little prayer, and continued my week-long rehearsal. I kept pacing back and forth, moving from my room to d sitting room, charging myself up to try to gain confidence for the fateful few hours to come. Mehn it feels great putting one brain to rigorous thought, super brilliant response just flying in, then i'd just rephrase a little for simplicity.
Fast-forward to inside the room sha, where d v.o's dem dey, i pannicked for minutes, after which i try to instill courage again. These two moods just kept taking turns within my system. Finally it got to my turn, and the conversion goes thus...

V. O: Why are you going to the U.S
Me: To obtain my masters degree in Environmental sciences, specifically in Environmental policy at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

V. O: How many school did you apply to
Me: 3; Florida international university, Texas a&m university, and Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville

V. O: Why did you choose to go here
Me: Most importantly, the great level of interaction with the other areas of specialization, to ensure implementation of comprehensive environmental scientific finding.
The positive response i got on my areas of research from prof x, who i intend to work it when i get to school
Ranking of d school as it is among top 10 public masters level university in the mid-western region of the u.s

V.O: What will you do after graduation
Me: Will come back to Nigeria to work on challenges facing the environmental sector particularly in the areas of implementaion of new ideas

V. O: Did you write any standardized test
Me: Yes, i wrote the Test of English and Foreign Language

V.O: Who is paying
Me: My mum, that is my mum elder brother.

V.O: What does he do
Me: He is a director at the ministry of foreign affairs, and he also sells cars

Then she said, Congratz ur visa has been approved, and started talkin abt EduUSA..
Mehn, i just collect my white paper, leave d room sharpaly.
Though my voice was shaking abit, but i like the lady (window 2), she allowed me make my case.
Thanks to everyone that have contributed in one way or d other here, you guyz are really wonderful.
My profile wasnt even superb, na baba God just do am. I actually did write GRE but my score was low (288), A.R 2.5 so i didnt bother mentioning it to the V.O so as to not affect my chances if asked for my score, as it wasnt even required for for 3.0+ GPA in SIUE. Toefl: 88.
To those about getting their visa, i wish you all the best, and to those that have gotten, congtatz in ur future endeavours. God bless you all.

Yaay congrats.
I tap into this in Jesus name.

asssiantship will also boost your chance. If their decision can come before the end of May that would be fine, then you can wait. But I will advice you book your interview for early or mid-June, assistantship or none.

Thank you.
Will consider it.
You are really helpful

Try to have an idea about the GA position and what it entails as they would ask you. They might ask for your strength and weaknesses. If you can work alone without supervision and what experiences do you have as regards the position. In all it would be a general interview question.

Thank you
Will start working on it
Do you advise I get visa first or I get assistantship first?
