OTUNBACODED: It is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth but of God that sheweth mercy (Romans 9:16). Today for 11am appointment in Lagos my visa was approved.
vo: good morning me: good morning ma and how do u do? vo: let me have your passport me: here they are ma, I handed her my passport , I-20 and sevis receipt vo: tell me about your study plan me: I am going to south dakota school of Mines and technology for Msc Mining Engineering & Management and I will be taking courses such as *************, this courses will help me with updating myself in the area of mining and also open me to new mining techniques. d Nigerian government is now working on making mining a major source of revenue generation as the crash in oil price as affected the economy negatively hence more qualified hands will be needed in the mining sector and this degree will give me an edge. (VO was just nodding) vo: who will be funding your study me: my elder brother, he works as *** with *** & I also have some personal savings to support myself since I currently work. (vo continued typing for like 2 minutes) vo: your visa has been approved.
It was just God's grace, favour & mercy as i did not write any test though it was not required from my school as my undegraduate was in same field.
Thanks to everybody that posted their transcript as i have learnt alot from here. Special thanks to Ojap , DareFadi & Warriboy21 Congratulations More of God's favour in Jesus name |

Pasadena009: I have been wanting to share my experience; never shared it publicly, perhaps this will be a great avenue to do so. Got my visa in 2007 at the US Lagos Consulate office. All ten people that went before me were denied. Back then when they had speaker microphone...every hears what the conversation was. Lol. One guy threw tantrums after his 3rd denial in anger. They called the security on him; I bet that would be his last US visa adventurism. Lol! I'll do my best to paraphrase the exact VO response.
I arrived at approximately 8am, my interview was at 9am. I was barely 18 yrs old...a month shy
Interview VO: Good morning young man Me: Good morning ma'am VO: What's your full name? ME: Answered...stammer on my first name like I usually do; took 8 seconds to get it out. I realized she was patiently looking at me as I blocked & stammered with the pain of a mother. VO: Appears that you have a stammer Me: Yes I do VO: My son has it too. Take your time and I'll be patient with you Me: Very appreciative ma'am. VO: What's your date of birth. Me: Told her xxxxxx VO: What university are you going to? Me: California Institute of Technology VO: She paused, look at me and said...that's the best engineering school in the country and probably also in the world. Me: I very much aware that VO: You must be an ingenious since only the likes of Albert Einstein go there Me: Smiled. I guess I must be as smart as Einstein. VO: Grinned. What course are going to be studying? Me: Mechanical engineering as major and minor in Aerospace engineering. VO: Who is your sponsor? Me: I have my Dad's bank statement however I'm under full scholarship for both undergraduate and graduate programs by CALTECH. VO: Can I see your bank statement and proof of scholarship Me: Sure VO: Very unusual to have a student born with a silver spoon riding on a full academic college scholarship to a prestigious school. Me: Smiled. VO: Can I see your tests and scores Me: Gave her my Waec, SAT and Toefl VO: Looked at me again, VO: Talked to her next officer, they both looked at me again. Me: Now I'm wondering...hope all is well VO: I see you have all distinctions, overall best in your class and also have the highest SAT score we have seen here. Me: Thank you ma'am VO: Why did you choose CALTECH? Me: Actually I had applied and accepted on full scholarship to MIT, Georgia Tech and CALTECH. VO: I see but you didn't answer my question Me: Oh, I chose CALTECH simply because I wanted to be close to water/beach, cool weather as I don't like snow and high humidity with respect to Massachusetts and Georgia respectively. VO: Smiled VO: Congratulations, come back at noon to pick up your visa. Wish you all the best! Me: Thank you ma'am
That was how I left the country! My advice is...be yourself. One thing I observed with every of my secondary school classmates that left for US was they were all going for engineering. The ones that were going for art, humanities or pure science majors, most were denied. Age is also a factor too...under 25 seem reasonable for undergraduate. Above 25, I would advise you go the graduate route.
Another big secret, apply to schools in small towns. This people have in-house algorithm that distributes international students evenly around the schools in US...otherwise you will have 20 people going to Los Angeles or Houston but none to Albuquerque or Provo. I swear if you apply to Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico...I swear, you must get visa. This is a powerful secret I'm giving out here. The reason is that this people want international students in those small towns since most people generally would prefer big cities with prospects. A former consulate officer told me this. Nice piece...thanks for sharing! |

Mekurexx: Just create a new Skype Account & pls Dont use a funky username. Also get a really good internet plus laptop and let the room lighting be great plus it should be quiet. I did a GA interview recently on a position to provide services with students with academic disabilities (I didnt get the position but I did great)be sure to check what responsibiities you will oerform as a TA. I was mostly talking about my work with people with disabiltiies ina hospital setting and not people with academic disabilities. I did great as per their reply email but cuz it was so so competitive, tthe way they picked the final person was excruciating. Make sure you highlight your academic and teaching abilities since its a TA. Dont dwell toomuch on work skills cuz its not an administrative position. You should sell yourself as an excellent student maybe in courses you scored A in your undergrad (highlight those well),talk about something e.g cell as a biology student, use terms and words affiliated to your field. And um, be sure to also highlight your communication skills, talk audibly, dont fake accent but speak so they can hear you, highlight your work-rate and energy and organizational skills (that you can combine and prioritize the TA and your studies). Dont put pressure on yourself but put up a performance that once you drop the call, you are confident you are the candidate they are looking for. You might not be the only one your grad-crod will interview and you dont know if its one position. And lastly, I read this tip on Quora, if you can make a professional laugh during an interview, that will be great. And dont be too deceived by body-language (nodding of head), I'm talking based on my interview (visa &GA), you can be talking off point and they will still be nodding, make sure you are making sense. Remember sometimes, second place gets you nothing, so prepare well and show yourself approved. Goodluck! You've said it all, was too lazy to type a long story about my experience. But this is enough and sufficient information. Wish you the best. Will add this :Be yourself, relate all your answers to your experience, be clear, be professional, it's like a job interview, it's okay to be nervous, but you will pick up confidence as it goes, pray also; it's God's favour. Best of luck |
