President Buhari who is currently on a state visit to China, visited the Former Chinese Imperial Palace otherwise known as China's Forbidden city today April 12th. Read a brief history of the forbidden city as written by Special Adviser to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, after the cut. The city was built from 1406 to 1420 in the reign of the Ming Dynasty Yongle Emperor. It served as the seat of power for 24 emperors, over the course of 491 years. And why is it called the Forbidden City? Because it was not just for anybody. Not for the hoi polloi, nor the flotsam and jetsam of society. Not for the proleteriat, but only the privileged and dignified. The poor enter at their own peril. It was off limits to them. But then, the Hausa say "Seriki goma, zamani goma" (Ten kings for ten epochs) and then times and seasons would change. The Forbidden City, located over vast hectares of land, with over 8,000 buildings and 1,800,000 sets of artifacts, fell to the 1911 Revolution led by Dr Sun Zhongshan. Yes, the good does not last forever, neither does the evil last forever. The Qing Dynasty (which was ruling then) came to an end, and the city was turned to a museum. Millions of tourists throng the place today from differnt parts of the world. A place that was once forbidden to commoners is now host to anybody and everbody. That is why it is good to belong to everybody, rather than to a privileged few. A tour guide took us round the Forbidden City, with its galleries of ceramics, clocks and watches, and other treasures, most in pure gold. Members of the dynasty really lived it up, drawing the wine of life to the full, and "the mere lees is left the vault to brag of." (William Shakespeare). The palace museum is believed to be the largest surviving wooden palace structure in the world. Most of the treasures, in gold, silver, jade, pearls and other precious materials, represent the highest artistic level of their time, and the splendour of the imperial family. Those of them who had died before the Forbidden City became a public place, would turn in their graves, if they know what has become of their much vaunted royal abode. The good does not last forever, neither does the evil last forever. Seriki goma, zamani goma. The pauper can become a prince, while the prince can become a pauper. Time and chance pertains to them all.

Press statement from the presidency below... PresidentT Muhammadu Buhari says that a committee to rehabilitate infrastructure and resettle Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in the North-East sub-region is soon to be formally inaugurated. The committee, to be led by a frontline statesman, Lt.-Gen Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd) will also include Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, GCON. Speaking at the State House, Abuja in response to a goodwill message delivered to him by a group, Women In Politics Forum (WIPF), President Buhari announced that all forms of assistance and aid in this respect generated locally and from foreign countries as promised by the Group of Seven of Industrialized Countries,G7 will be channeled through the committee when it is inaugurated. He said that he had compiled a list of damaged infrastructure, including schools and bridges and handed it to the leaders of the G7 and the United States, adding that "I didn't ask for a Kobo (in cash). It is up to them to choose what they will undertake. Already, some of them have sent teams to verify our assertions." President Buhari decried the impact of the Boko Haram violence on women and children declaring that they are its worst victims. "In the North-East, what I saw for myself and on those clips is a source of concern for people with conscience. They are mostly women, and children who are orphaned. Some of them don't even know where they come from. This is the pathetic situation in which the country has found itself." He said that the fight for the return of the Chibok girls is ongoing and "continues to be a most worrying issue" to his government, emphasizing that the administration will do all within its powers in making the best efforts to secure their freedom. The President acknowledged the case made by the WIPF for better representation of women in his government and assured that women would fare well in the composition of parastatals and their boards in the first quarter of this year. He also defended the records of the administration in response to criticism that it is slow, arguing that steps must taken with caution to avoid mistakes. "People say we are slow. We are trying to change structures put in place by our predecessors in office for 16 years. If we hurry it, we will make mistakes. That will be a disaster." President Buhari assured that the country has a budget proposal for the new year that is good for employment and manufacturing. "By the end of the second quarter, the full impact of these positive measures will be felt," he told the visiting women. The WIPF, made up of women leaders from 26 registered political parties led by Barrister Ebere Ifendu of the Labour Party expressed their full support for the government's war on corruption and insecurity. They asked the administration to usher in laws to promote gender equity as well as action towards the implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act. The Women's group made the record of being the first organization to be received by the President in the New Year. Garba Shehu SSAP (Media and Publicity), State House, Abuja. lalaaticlala

Governor Ibikunke Amosun of Ogun State will any- time from now dissolve his cabinet in preparation for the inauguration of his second term in office. Amosun who was declared winner of governorship election held April 11 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was reportedly in dilemma over the choice of new members of his cabinet to help him govern the state. A reliable source informed Vanguard that the governor had ordered all the members of his cabinet to resubmit their Curriculum Vitae ahead of his second term inauguration. In his first term, Amosun had made use of technocrats to the detriment of party members who worked for his emergence. This gesture had pitched him against some members and leaders of the party. His insistence to use technocrats instead of politicians who had worked for his emergence prompted many of the party stalwarts including former governor of the state, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and his loyalists to dump the party for the Social Democratic Party, SDP. The exit of Osoba and his loyalists which included three senators and five members of House of Representatives, as well as four members of the state House of assembly gave Amosun free hands to operate without being challenged by anyone. The governor who had a field day in choosing who worked with him during his first time ignored a list of commissioner-nominees submitted by Osoba who was then, the party leader. Now that, no one could claim to be the party leader with Osoba’s status, Amosun expectedly should have more independence to choose who works with him in his second term as cabinet members. Amosun’s Dilemma Ahead of his second term emergence as governor, Amosun had reportedly entered into some accord with some political bigwigs in the state with a view to accommodating them by proxy in his cabinet. Those whom Amosun had reportedly sought political help from include; former President Olusegun Obasanjo who directed his ‘boys’ to work for the governor success at the poll. Obasanjo, according to the findings, did not only throw his weight behind Amosun by taking campaign to market places, he also reportedly provided logistics for the governor’s success at the poll. Amosun is perhaps indebted to Obasanjo and his boys and must honour his pledge. Apart from the Obasanjo factor, other factors that put the governor in a fix include, the slots for those who financed his elections covertly and overtly. The slots for Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo and the Awujale of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Adetona. Other people who may have slots in Amosun’s cabinet include the party; his political associates, loyalists and family members. A source hinted Vanguard that, the governor had instructed party leaders to submit 20 names each from the local governments. According to the findings, five of the names would be nominees for Federal government appointments, five for state appointments and the remaining ten would be for local governments appointments. It was further gathered that, the governor was said to have assured the party leaders that he would pick his nominees from the names they submitted. The governor was also quoted to have pledged to ensure that he creates some boards appointments so as to create avenues for his people to benefit as a mark of compensation. Further findings have shown that, the plan by the governor to create 32 additional Local Council Development Areas to complement the 20 local governments in the state was a way to expand the chance of compensating his numerous people. However, the governor was said to have decided to retain few commissioners among his 20 commissioners that served in his first term administration. A check by Vanguard showed that, commissioners for Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Works and infrastructure; Lekan Adegbite, Information, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muyiwa Oladipo and Forestry, Ayo Olubori were being favourably considered for retention. According to the information gathered, some commissioners are not coming back because of their poor performance while some will not be retained because of the greater appointments awaiting them. The governor was however, said to be angry with some political office holders especially in Ogun East and West where the party did not perform well. According to the source, some of them had collected huge money from the governor for campaign and motivation during the election, but refused to spend it. The gesture, reportedly infuriated the governor who vowed to ensure they are not returned. The governor, though, had free hand to nominate the people that would work with him, he still has challenges on who and how to choose next set of people to work with in his second term. This time around, it was reliably gathered that, the governor would use more politicians than technocrats in his second term administration.

The White House was briefly put on lockdown Thursday as the Secret Service detained an individual for flying a small drone in an adjacent park. President Barack Obama was not in the residence at the time. In a statement, the Secret Service said the individual was seen flying the Parrot Bebop device in Lafayette Park at an altitude of about 100 feet (35 meters). He was detained by uniformed Secret Service officers as the park — filled at lunch hour on a sunny spring day — was swiftly evacuated and the White House was briefly put on lockdown. “As a precaution, the small UAV was swept and declared safe,” said the Secret Service, which released a photo of the red quadracopter — a popular consumer model with a video camera built in. The operator was later identified by the United States Park Police as Ryan MacDonald, 39, of Vacaville, California. That police agency said in a statement that the man was arrested “for violating federal law.” It did not elaborate other than to say MacDonald was cited and it is to appear in court. Obama was meeting Gulf leaders at his rural Camp David retreat in Maryland at the time of the incident. Flying drones of any size is prohibited within the US capital — a point that the Federal Aviation Administration is underscoring in a “no-drone zone” publicity campaign it launched earlier this week. In January, a DJI Phantom drone — another consumer model — crashed onto the White House grounds after it slipped out of the control of the federal employee who was flying it in the early hours of the morning. The incident was deemed to be an accident and no charges were filed. A similar Parrot Bebop, weighing about one pound (500 grams), was flown indoors in January at the Capitol during a House of Representatives committee hearing on unmanned aircraft technology. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/small-drone-puts-white-house-on-lockdown/ lalasticlala ishilove |

Aggrieved members in PDP in Adamawa state who failed to secure their party's ticket in the last general elections have demanded a return of the money they paid for the party's nomination forms. Addressing newsmen in Yola, the Adamawa state capital today May 14th, the leader of the aggrieved politicians who gathered under the aegis of PDP Aggrieved Aspirants Forum, Liazaru Aliada-Gugu, threatened to drag the party to court if their money is not returned. “We the aggrieved PDP aspirants bought forms to contest the primary election and since they did not conduct any primary election, it is only natural for them to return our money. We have made our request known to the leadership of our party both at the state and national level. They have promised to address the issue but up till now they have not done anything. When we met the national leader of the party and the national chairman of the party, they agreed to do something about us and we were satisfied with that meeting. But after several weeks of waiting without response we are left with no other option than to take our case to court.”he said lindaikeji..in/2015/05/lol-aggrieved-pdp-aspirants-demand.html?m=1 lalasticlala ishilove

20-year old Joberi Pyagbara, a Rivers state based cult member, (pictured below) says he killed and buried a rival cult member in a community close to his own after a rival cult group known as Dewua stormed his community and killed his friends who belonged to his own cult group known as Dewell. Speaking with Punch , Joberi said he joined the cult in 2006 after working as a conductor for some years. He said after dropping his arms as a militant for the federal governments amnesty programme, he decided to pick up arms again after the killing of his friends. "I was arrested by the police because of cultism. It was during a community fight. Members of a cult group killed some of my friends and we decided to avenge and killed two. When the other cult group (Demua) came, they scattered the community. Many people ran away while they killed our friends. I belong to Dewell. We don’t kill, but when anybody offends us, we go after him. They (other cult group) started it all by killing our members and we had to fight back. It is true that I killed one person and buried him in my community, Eken in Khana Local Government Area. I dug a small grave and did it (buried him). As a cultist, I felt satisfied when I killed those who killed my friends. Though we surrendered our weapons when the amnesty programme came, when we noticed that a rival cult group was attacking us and killing some of our friends, we had to look for arms and decided to revenge. I am 20 years old. I am part of the amnesty programme; I have never involved myself in crime after the amnesty, but the killings of my friends took me back to cultism. Those cult people cut our friends’ head and then we agreed that we must avenge. I joined cultism in 2006. We always hustle to get money to finance the group. I work as a conductor or collect money from commercial drivers at bus-stops. If I am freed, I will be a good person and will not join cultism again. I regret all my actions, especially the killings” he said lalasticlala

A Miami man, Daniel Sion Palmer, 26, man was recently arrested after authorities say he robbed a man at gunpoint, took off running and returned moments later to complain that the stolen goods were fake. The incident happened about 3 a.m. when Palmer allegedly pointed a gun at a man from New York, grabbed his gold chain and then took off. Police say Palmer apparently was not satisfied with his freshly stolen jewelry, and so he approached the victim again a block away, just so he could tell him the jewelry was fake. "That was a brazen move and because of that he was able to be apprehended," Det. Ernesto Rodriguez said. The victim was able to flag police down and point out Palmer, who was now driving a Mercedes. Investigators say he sped disregarding the police officers who had turned on their lights and sirens, he was eventually apprehended and arrested. He has since been charged with armed robbery, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and possession of a suspended license, police said. cc.lalasticlala
