A 28-year-old youth corps member on Tuesday asked for the dissolution of her one-year-old marriage, citing incompatibility with her estranged husband. The petitioner, Ngozi Ekeh, told an Ojo Customary Court in Lagos that she was always having frequent disagreements with Onyekachi Ekeh since they got married about one year ago, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. The petitioner told the court that she started cohabiting with Ekeh during her service year, until he paid her bride price. “Since I got married to my husband, we have never agreed on an issue as a couple, it has always been quarrels and fights. “In a nutshell, I think we are not compatible at all,” she said. She told the court that she was separated from her husband in 2011, adding that she had since lived with her parents. Ngozi, therefore, sought for the dissolution of the union, stressing that nothing could make her return to the marriage. The respondent was absent from court. The Acting Court President, Mr. S.B Giwa, ordered that a hearing notice be issued to the respondent to appear in court on the next adjourned date of October 16. Ogun State government has ordered Fulani herdsmen to stop their migration to the state as it aims to end clashes between farmers and the cattle-rearers. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Ayo Olubori, at a meeting of the stakeholders in Abeokuta on Wednesday, said the directive was to enable the state to address the factors responsible for the recurring clashes between farmers and herdsmen and also to set a minimum requirement for the nomads. “Fulani herdsmen who are bringing their cattle into the state for grazing should suspend their coming until proper arrangements have been made to ensure that the crises that usually occur between them and farmers do not happen again” he commissioner declared. He noted that “government is working to ensure that farmers and herdsmen can cohabit peacefully without a breakdown of law and order and we will not tolerate a recurrence of what was witnessed last year.” Prominent among those who attended the meeting were the representatives of the Ministry, security agents, the concerned council bosses, Seriki fulanis of the affected areas and Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Mr. Segun Dasaolu. A number of lives were lost in a recent tribal clash between some Hausa and Yoruba in Ibese, Yewa North Local Government of the state which claimed the lives of three persons and left no fewer than 30 vehicles burnt. Less than two weeks ago news hit the media about how the lower House in Senegal approved a law which seeks to scrap the Senate of that country. Then, questions were raised whether that kind of an issue could possibly be considered by Nigerian lawmakers, and if it was, if they could ever bring it to reality. Well, it seems something like that might just be considered – even if it is just to get our senators on their toes. The idea, interestingly, is coming from former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, himself a former senator whose wife is also a serving senator! Tinubu is now advocating for only one National Assembly, saying having two Assemblies is consuming the funds of the country. Tinubu particularly called for the cancellation of the Senate, stressing that they are only performing similar functions which the House of Representatives would have done successfully. He was speaking at the 2012 annual conference and awards ceremony of Leadership Newspapers Group in Abuja. According to him, “we have kept complaining about the cost of governance and the recurrent expenditure…but we have never examined the structural problems of even the constitution that we are operating… Why do we need two houses of National Assembly when House of Representatives represent smaller constituencies enough in the same number of population? Why not get rid of the Senate? To equip better and effective legislative activities, let us start examining that.” |

The story about the (now) 13 year old boy charged with murdering his two year old brother has been bothering me since I read it. Huffington Post: A decade before he was charged with murder, a 2-year-old Cristian Fernandez was found naked and dirty, wandering a South Florida street. The grandmother taking care of him had holed up with cocaine in a messy motel room, while his 14-year-old mother was nowhere to be found. His life had been punctuated with violence since he was conceived, an act that resulted in a sexual assault conviction against his father. Fernandez’ life got worse from there: He was sexually assaulted by a cousin and beaten by his stepfather, who committed suicide before police investigating the beating arrived. Now 13, Fernandez is accused of two heinous crimes himself: first-degree murder in the 2011 beating death of his 2-year-old half-brother and the sexual abuse of his 5- year-old half-brother. Fernandez was born in Miami in 1999 to Biannela Susana, who was 12. The 25-year- old father received 10 years’ probation for sexually assaulting her. Two years later, both mother and son went to foster care after authorities in South Florida found the toddler, filthy and naked, walking in the street at 4 a.m. near the motel where his grandmother did drugs. In 2007, when Fernandez was 8, the Department of Children and Families investigated a report that he was sexually molested by an older cousin. Officials said other troubling incidents were reported, including claims that he killed a kitten, simulated sex with classmates and masturbated at school. In October 2010, Fernandez and his mother were living in Hialeah, a Miami suburb, with his mother’s new husband. Fernandez suffered an eye injury so bad that school officials sent him to the hospital where he was examined for retinal damage. Fernandez told officers that his stepfather had punched him. When officers went to the family’s apartment, they found the stepfather dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s beyond horrific and disturbing that so young a young child can have experienced such trauma in his short life and be forced to do the un-thinkable like Alicia keys would sing! |
