PORT HARCOURT – UNIVERSITY of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has declared seven days of mourning for three of its students killed by irate mobs at Omokere-Aluu community, Friday, last week. Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, who spoke to newsmen, yesterday, at the main campus of the university, described the killing of the students as a horrendous crime. Stressing that the university would not tolerate any act of jungle justice, he commiserated with the bereaved families. He said the university had to suspend its students’ union week, which was to have commenced yesterday, in honour of the deceased students and also declared seven days mourning period, which would end on Sunday. He said the three deceased persons confirmed to be students of the university were Biringa Lordson, a year two Theatre Arts student; Ugonna Obuzor, a year two Geology student and Mike Toku, a year two Civil Engineering student. He said the fourth person killed alongside the other three was Tekena Erikena, adding that efforts were still on to confirm if he was a student of the university. The Vice Chancellor said though the university had declared seven days mourning period for the deceased students, which took off yesterday, the university was still in session. He dismissed allegations in some quarters that students of the university were mobilizing to storm Omokere-Aluu community, where the killing took place on a reprisal attack. Prof Ajienka, who was flanked by other principal officers of the university, called on security operatives to fish out those behind the killings. When Vanguard visited the community yesterday, some residents were seen relocating to neighbouring areas. They told our correspondent that they were running from arrest by security operatives. Some of them who spoke on strict condition of anonymity, said they had been living at the mercy of armed robbers in the community within the last six months. |

Agbor – Retired Major General Frank Osokogu, father of late Cynthia Osokogu, has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary, saying that he was sure justice would be done in the case of his daughter’s death. The late Cynthia was found dead in a hotel room in Lagos on July 26, after she was declared missing by her family three days earlier. She was allegedly killed by her assailants on July 22. Four suspects, including two university undergraduates, were later arrested in connection with the incident and the case had been taken to court. The remains of the late Cynthia were committed to earth on Friday at Owa Ekei, Agbor, Delta. Speaking to newsmen at the occasion, the father of the deceased said that he was impressed with the way the investigation and court process of his late daughter were handled. He commended the police for what he described as “wonderful job so far’’, and urged the force to always rise to occasions that needed its professionalism in order to make the force a true friend of the public. He said that the death of Cynthia, who would have been 24 years in November, had created a big vacuum in his family but stated that the family had no choice than bear the loss. “Life must go on because what you cannot change, you will accept.’’ He commended the media for their support and appealed for demonstration of the same zeal in covering the court proceedings on the case. The remains of the late Cynthia, conveyed in a Volvo ambulance with registration number LY 616 EKY, arrived at her father’s compound at Agbor at 2.55 p.m. Her remains were interred in the compound at 3.55 p.m. after a brief Christian ceremony conducted by Rev. Fr. Leonard Biachi, the Parish Priest of Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church, Boji Boji, Owa. The first attempt to bury the late Cynthia on Sept. 7 was aborted when the police were said to have refused to release her body on grounds that they had not concluded autopsy on it. But a funeral mass scheduled for the day was conducted and persons who had arrived for the burial attended the mass and later commiserated with the family. Guests at the Sept. 7 aborted burial included Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Dr Festus Okubor, Chief of Staff, Government House, Asaba and top military personnel and traditional chiefs in the area. Until her death, Cynthia was a post- graduate student at the Nassarawa State University, Keffi, where she obtained her first degree. Six civil servants of the University of Ilorin who allegedly conspired and stole 12,400litres of diesel were yesterday arraigned before an Ilorin magistrate court. The accused, Oni Oloruntoye, David Abayomi, Komolafe Semiu, Benjamin Ojo, Saliu Kawu and Akinyemi Joshua, all of central power station, University of Ilorin appeared before the court on a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft. According to the police first information report (FIR), they conspired to steal the 12400 litre of diesel valued 2.8m Naira, between April 30 and 27 May, 2012 from the reservoir tank of the power station at the university without the consent of the university. The FIR also revealed that the accused had been using jerry cans to siphon diesel from the tank under the pretence that they were assigned to take them to the main campus for use. Preliminary investigation conducted at the police station revealed that all the accused belonged to a syndicate of staff that stole diesel from the institution reservoir tank where they work. The prosecutor, Corporal Sani Abdullahi, objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them at the federal prison pending the outcome of the on-going investigation into the matter. The defence, counsel Barrister Kemi Makinde and R. O Balogun, prayed the court to release the accused on bail and on a liberal term, submitting that they would not jump bail and that they were ready to provide reliable sureties to ensure that they stand their trial. Magistrate S. B. Olanipekun who presided over the matter yielded to the submission of the defence, as he ordered that each of the accused be released on bail at the sum of N50,000 and two sureties each. The court order also that each of the sureties should deposited 2 passport photographs. The matter will on 17 October, 2012 come up for further mention. SOURCE: www.ilorin.info/fullnews.php?id=7191 |
Underarm antiperspirants could be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, claims a scientist. Dr Philippa Darbre, a cancer researcher at the University of Reading, says the latest research suggests the ingredients found in many over-the-counter products could trigger the development of tumours. She believes compounds of aluminium and zirconium in the cosmetics could affect hormone levels, raising the risk of cancer. The substances help prevent sweating in roll- on and spray underarm antiperspirants. Though some simple deodorants, designed just to mask odour, do not contain them, most do. Antiperspirants prevent sweating, while deodorants are simply designed to make people smell more appealing. Manufacturers insist products are entirely safe. They declared themselves ' baffled' by Dr Darbre's conclusions, pointing out that several large studies have failed to find any link between cosmetics and cancer. In Britain, new cases of breast cancer have doubled from about 20,000 a year in the late 1970s to almost 40,000 a year now. Britain has one of the world's highest rates of the disease and every year about 13,000 British women die from it. Britons are also big users of deodorants and antiperspirants, spending £400m a year on them. Dr Darbre, a cancer researcher in the department of cell and molecular biology at Reading, has just published a comprehensive review of research on the issue, which she has been investigating for almost a decade. "The nature of the chemicals in these cosmetics and the lack of any advice about safe quantity or frequency of application, should be of concern," she says. Dr Darbre claims the strongest evidence for the theory is the 'disproportionately high incidence' of breast cancer in the upper outer quadrant of the breast where antiperspirants are applied. Her review, published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, points out that the rise of breast cancer in men parallels the increase in women, and has also doubled over the past three decades to about 300 cases a year. Most tumours in both sexes occur in the upper and outer section of the left breast, the proportion in that area having increased from 31 per cent in 1926 to 61 per cent in 1994. If the use of antiperspirants is to blame, this would be accounted for by the fact most people are right-handed and likely to apply more deodorant to their left armpit, Dr Darbre said. Formation of breast tumours, Dr Darbre says, is known to be linked to hormone levels. Laboratory experiments have indicated that chemical compounds derived from zirconium and aluminium may be linked to hormone disruption. However, scientists stress there is no evidence the small quantities of the chemicals found in antiperspirants may be dangerous. Dr Chris Flower, of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, said that under European and UK law cosmetic products undergo a full safety assessment. He pointed out that Dr Darbre had been claiming for many years that different substances in antiperspirants, called parabens, might be causing breast cancer. "She now seems to have shifted to aluminium and zirconium," he said. "I'm not quite sure what it is she doesn't like about deodorants, but one might almost feel that she had it in for them." Dr Tim Key, a Cancer Research UK scientist based at Oxford University, said breast cancer rates had gone up because British women were drinking more alcohol, were fatter and were having children later - all factors known to increase the risk. He added: "There is no need for concern about deodorants, in my view. "The way science works is that someone puts an idea forward and others follow it if they think it is worth doing so. "At the moment, not many people think this is a worthwhile line of investigation." One recent study of 1,500 women found no evidence to support the hypothesis that antiperspirant use increases the risk of developing breast cancer. The study was carried out after rumours of a causative link were circulated on the Internet. Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, Seattle, found there was no increased risk of breast cancer among women who used antiperspirant or deodorant. Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku have investigated the case of a 28-year-old lady, Ms Kemi Adeoye, who was arrested by policemen from Sanyo Division for stealing a baby in a church during a vigil service on Friday September 7, 2012. The lady, according to police sources, had attended a church service on the fateful day and had picked a baby where she had been laid while her mother was praying in front of the altar. After picking the baby, the lady had reportedly left for one of the chalets within the church premises and locked herself in, after she had put the baby on her back. The mother had raised an alarm when she got back to her seat and beheld an empty bed without her baby on it, a situation which caused members who were at the vigil to halt the service while they trooped out in search of the missing baby. Simultaneously, a drama had ensued at the chalet area where one of the church workers had noticed that there was an occupant in a chalet which he had not allocated to anyone. Curious to know the occupant and how he or she got the key, the workers was said to have knocked on the door. To his surprise, a voice from inside the room replied his enquiry on the identity of the occupant with another question, asking who the man was. The door was said to have been forced open and a woman with a baby on her back was discovered in the room. It was at that time that members of the church searching for the baby got to where the chalets were, only for the baby’s mother to see that it was her baby the woman was putting on her back. The suspect was said to have been taken to the police station where she told the police that she was sent by a woman to go and steal a baby. She also told them that she had once taken a child from a CAC church at Apete but could not say where she took the baby to. Here is a list of those important things you should know when getting to know someone, you might not get to ask them directly, but still find a way to know all the answers to the 10 points listed below: 1. Are you married / or do have a girlfriend/boyfriend? Any studdering, hesitation or giggling is a MAJOR red flag. “Are you single” is a very simple question that should have a very simple answer… i remember this man was trying to approach me, i asked him if he was single… first he giggled (nervous laughter) then he said “why you ask me that”? then he said “yes i’m single”, then he says “i have friends”, translation… “no i’m not single, i have a girl but i’m also a dog”. SMH!!! If a man/ woman is single he/she will answer that question with a simple “YES” (with no pause), anything other than that is suspect. 2. What are his/her morals & values? This one should be HIGH on everyone’s list. If your morals & values are not in alignment with each other, that could be a big problem. 3. How does he/she speak to you? I have learned that there is something to be said about a man/woman who constantly speaks with a foul mouth around a person they just started dating. It shows a lack of respect. I’m not saying a man/woman can’t ever curse… of course that’s not the case, but if he/she’s saying things to you like “wassup my nigga” or “wassup bitch” or Muthaf*cka this Muthaf*cka that”… he/she is not respecting you. 4. What is he saying about his / her ex? Is he speaking negative about them? It’s normal to some degree for a person to say certain things about their EX, however if the person you are interested in is ranting with anger and talking very negative about the person whom they were once in love with… that’s a sign they still have issues regarding that situation, and just like they talk bad about that EX, they will talk bad about you. 5. Does he/she want marriage and children? If you are early 20′s you don’t have to rush these type of questions, but if you are in your 30′s or 40′s you NEED to ask the tough questions early so you are not wasting your time with someone who doesn’t want the same things in life that you want or maybe they want it and you don’t… either way, marriage and children need to be discussed at some point, especially if that’s something you have your heart set on. 6. Do they have anger issues or a quick temper? I once was out with a guy who screamed at the top of his lungs at someone for getting his order wrong…. being annoyed would be normal, but to SCREAM bloody Mary in a public place is insane… needless to say that was one red flag that i should’ve took heed to. pay attention to Public behavior and quick temper signs, if they act psycho in public, what do you think they will be like behind closed doors? 7. What are their goals? This is a good question to ask to see if he/she may have a good head on his/ her shoulders. I met a man who lived at home with his mom, yet he spent several thousand dollars buying a new gold chain when he should’ve been getting his own place (SMH)! needless to say that was a major turnoff to me and a huge red flag that his priorities & goals were not in sync with mines. 8. Do they have kids, how many? how many mothers/fathers? If meet a man with 5 kids and 4 or 5 different mothers. Realistically speaking, if a man is spending time & money with his kids like he’s suppose to, how is it possible for him to have time or the finances to date or start a family with someone new? besides that, it could be a red flag that he has commitment issues if he hasn’t settled down with none of the mother of his kids. I don’t like to judge but… No Thanks!! 9. What type of people do they hang around? They say you are a reflection of the people you choose to hang around. If the man/woman you are interested in is hanging around with people who have no morals and bad character, you need to pay attention to that. 10. How do they treat their Mother/ Father? In most cases, If a person speaks to their Mom/Dad in a disrespectful manner… that’s a sign that they will probably speak to you the same way eventually. |
MRbrownJAY: lol, handed over to the police ke........ she must have sukced a few dikcs (if not worst) to get out of this one....... the vids will eventually surface someday.LMAO.... |

A female undergraduate, simply identified as Chisom from one of the tertiary institutions in Imo State was last weekend stripped naked for stealing a Blackberry phone in a very popular night club located in the city of Owerri. According to an eye witness account, Chisom had removed the phone from the bag of another fun seeker in the club, but luck ran out of her as she made frantic effort to switch it off. LEADERSHIP WEEKEND gathered that the owner of the phone put a call through her line using the phone of another friend after searching for hers, and heard it ringing inside chisom’s bag. The people in the club as LEADERSHIP WEEKEND was reliably informed wasted no time to descend on the suspect , beating her black and blue before stripping her skimpy clothe off her. According to our source, It took the efforts of the guard at the night club to save Chisom from being lynched to death, as she was taken into one of the rooms in the club to change her clothes. Altough it could not be ascertained as the time of this report if she was handed over to the police for further investigation as all efforts to reach the divisional police officer in that area proved abortive.
