Peter Obi had two deputies during his time as governor of Anambra State:

1. Virginia Ngozi Etiaba – Deputy Governor from 17 March 2006 to 2 November 2006 during Obi’s first tenure. When Obi was impeached in Nov 2006, she became Governor of Anambra State, the first woman to hold that office in Nigeria.

2. Emeka Sibeudu – Deputy Governor from [b][/b]2010 to 2014 [b][/b]during Obi’s second term. Obi picked Sibeudu as his running mate for the 2010 election.

So Etiaba served in his first term, and Sibeudu served in his second term.



That document up there was for the deputy governor as at then, Mrs Etiaba.

You may have probably heard Peter Obi say that the office of first lady is illegal and that he will scrap it if he wins and takes office. Well, evidence shows that when Peter Obi was Anambra governor, he maintained that office and funded his wife's lavish lifestyle with state funds. Talk about hypocrisy.

Note that Obi was governor from 2006 to 2014.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says the party is not a personality cult or a special purpose vehicle that can be “used and discarded”.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Osa Director, NDC national publicity secretary, said the national executive committee (NEC) at a meeting in Abuja, reaffirmed that the “party is supreme, and programmes, policies, and appointments by governments elected on its platform must be made in consultation with the party.”

He said party members are expected to align their personal interests with those of the party.


“All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure,” Director said.

“A comprehensive Code of Conduct shall be established for all party officials and candidates. To this end, a committee has been constituted under the leadership of the National Legal Adviser to develop the framework and guidelines.”

Director said the party has inaugurated a national reconciliation committee to reconcile aggrieved members.


Some aspirants had accused the NDC of imposing candidates for various elective positions during the party’s nationwide primaries.

The NDC spokesperson said the party is “being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded”.


“Members are encouraged to remain committed to the party and contribute to its growth and sustainability for generations to come,” he said.

The NDC national publicity secretary said the party would enforce transparency in all funds received, noting that candidates at all levels are required to fully disclose the funds they source and the contributions made to their campaign accounts.

“On financial probity, the party will enforce strict accountability in the management of party resources by all officers, and party funds must be used strictly for party business,” he said.


Director added that all campaign funds must be channelled through designated party accounts, including those for presidential and gubernatorial campaigns, where applicable.

Delta Emerges Among Nigeria’s Best Governed States Under Oborevwori

Delta State has been ranked as the second-best governed state in Nigeria under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, according to the 2025 Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) Governance Performance Index (CGPI).

The latest governance ranking placed Delta State second nationwide with a score of 70 per cent, closely following Kaduna State, which topped the index with 73 per cent.


The ranking highlights the growing recognition of Governor Oborevwori’s administration for its performance in governance, infrastructure development, public service delivery and overall management of state affairs.

The CIAPS Governance Performance Index assessed the performance of governors across Nigeria’s 36 states, measuring governance outcomes and the effectiveness of public administration.

Governor Oborevwori’s second-place ranking places Delta ahead of 34 out of the 36 states in Nigeria, including Anambra, Niger, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Oyo, Enugu and Borno, which completed the top ten positions.

According to the report, Kaduna State, under Governor Uba Sani, emerged first with 73 per cent, while Delta State followed closely with 70 per cent.


Anambra State, led by Governor Charles Soludo, ranked third with 65.5 per cent, while Niger State under Governor Mohammed Umar Bago placed fourth with 65.1 per cent.


Ekiti State, governed by Biodun Oyebanji, came fifth with 64.5 per cent, while Akwa Ibom and Lagos States, led by Governors Umo Eno and Babajide Sanwo-Olu respectively, each scored 64 per cent to occupy the sixth and seventh positions.

Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde secured eighth place with 61 per cent, followed by Enugu State under Governor Peter Mbah with 56.5 per cent. Borno State, led by Governor Babagana Zulum, completed the top ten with 54 per cent.

In the middle-tier category, Kwara, Abia, Ondo, Nasarawa, Osun, Ogun, Kano, Kogi, Edo and Jigawa occupied positions 11 to 20.

The report also identified the lowest-performing states, with Taraba State ranking last among the 36 states with a governance score of 20 per cent. Yobe, Benue, Rivers, Plateau and Kebbi were also among the bottom performers.


The strong showing by Delta State is expected to reinforce growing public confidence in the Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda, which has driven extensive investments in roads, bridges, healthcare, education and other critical sectors across the state.

The ranking further reflects the impact of ongoing development projects and governance reforms being implemented by the administration, positioning Delta among the leading states in Nigeria in terms of governance performance and service delivery.

The Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies noted that the Governance Performance Index serves as a benchmark for evaluating the effectiveness of state governments and promoting accountability, transparency and sustainable development across the federation.

As an Igbo man, I have endured stereotypes, judgment, and labelling solely based on my ethnic origins. This is not an isolated Igbo experience. Most Nigerians have, at some point, been reduced to their ethnicity rather than recognised for their true character.

I understand the pain of the ordinary Fulani man today, often unfairly judged by the actions of criminals he does not support, has never met, and who are not representative of his people.

Even in America, such unjust labelling fueled the civil rights movement and prompted Martin Luther King Jr. to declare that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the colour of their skin.

Every Nigerian ethnic group is known for its unique traditions, occupations, skills, and strengths. Crime, however, has no ethnicity. A thief is a thief. A terrorist is a terrorist. A kidnapper is a kidnapper. They are bad actors, not representatives of any people. They must be identified, arrested, and punished according to the law.

We must decisively abandon the dangerous practice of blaming entire ethnic groups for the actions of a few criminals. It is unjust, it breeds hatred, and it damages our national unity.

Let us proudly celebrate our diverse cultures, talents, and contributions, rather than falling prey to stereotypes and prejudices that politicians and divisive interests exploit for their gain.

A new Nigeria must emerge—one where no citizen is condemned because of tribe, religion, or birthplace. We can cherish our cultural roots while standing united by justice, mutual respect, and hope for a better future. We are capable of this.

What is your opinion of this awkward set up?

It is northerners who will decide that, not you my kinsman from Anambra state.

This section of the road is in Anambra state designed to link the second niger bridge to the Onitsha -Enugu expressway and bypass Onitsha city. The work is in full blast as the contractors race to meet deadlines.

The road is constructed on rigid pavement(concrete) which means it is guaranteed to last 100 years.

For the locals to choose him, he must have been only Igbo by name. He speaks Yoruba fluently and very little Igbo like most Igbo born and brought up in the south west.

*Affirms states’ control over adjoining lands for non-navigational purposes

The Supreme Court has delivered a landmark constitutional judgement limiting the federal government’s powers over lands adjoining inland waterways across the country, declaring portions of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Act unconstitutional.

In a major victory for Lagos State in Suit No. SC/CV/541/2025, the apex court held that Sections 12 and 13 of the NIWA Act are invalid to the extent that they empower the Federal Government to regulate and control lands adjoining waterways for purposes unrelated to navigation, maritime activities and fishing.

In addition to Lagos, other states that joined the suit against the fedyeral Government were Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Cross River, Kaduna, Enugu, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Benue, Rivers, Osun, Oyo and Anambra. Lagos State’s legal team was led by the State’s former Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, alongside Olasupo Shasore SAN, and Muiz Banire SAN, while the Federal Government was represented by Akin Olujinmi SAN.

The court affirmed that state governments retain constitutional authority over adjoining lands used for non-navigational purposes, thereby restricting the federal government and the NIWA from exercising sweeping control over such areas.

The seven-member panel of the court, led by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, also issued a perpetual injunction restraining the Federal Government from dealing with lands adjoining waterways within Lagos State and other states of the federation for non-navigational purposes.

The matter was determined by a panel comprising Justices Garba, Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Haruna Simon Tsammani, Stephen Jonah Adah, Abubakar Sadiq Umar and Mohammed Baba Idris. Justice Umar, read the lead judgment.

Although the court was unanimous on most issues, the decision recorded a 5-2 split on the constitutionality of Sections 10 and 11 of the NIWA Act.

Justices Agim and Idris dissented on some aspects of the decision, maintaining that Lagos State ought to have succeeded on additional reliefs relating to Federal control over waterways.

Lagos State had approached the Supreme Court under its original jurisdiction, challenging the constitutional validity of several provisions of the NIWA Act.
The state argued that the National Assembly exceeded its constitutional authority by enacting provisions empowering the Federal Government and NIWA to exercise control over lands adjoining waterways within states.
Specifically, Lagos contended that Sections 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the NIWA Act conflicted with Sections 4 and 315 of the Constitution, the Land Use Act, and Items 36 and 64 of the Exclusive Legislative List.

The state further argued that the Federal Government could not validly exercise powers over inland waterways that had not been designated as international or interstate waterways by the National Assembly.
Lagos also maintained that the federal government lacked constitutional authority to regulate lands adjoining waterways for purposes unrelated to navigation.

The state sought multiple declarations and orders nullifying the disputed provisions and restraining federal authorities from exercising control over adjoining lands within its territory.
Before delving into the substantive issues, the Supreme Court first considered preliminary objections filed by the Federal Government and other defendants challenging the jurisdiction of the court. The objections were dismissed for lacking merit.

The court subsequently proceeded to determine the constitutional questions raised in the suit.

One of the key issues addressed by the court was whether the case had already been settled in the earlier dispute between NIWA and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LSWA). The defendants had argued that the doctrine of res judicata applied because the issues had been determined in the earlier NIWA v. LSWA decision.

However, the Supreme Court rejected the argument, holding that the present suit was distinguishable from the earlier case and therefore not barred.
That finding cleared the way for the court to fully examine the constitutional validity of the disputed provisions of the NIWA Act.
In its substantive findings, the court held that Sections 12 and 13 of the NIWA Act went beyond the constitutional powers granted to the National Assembly.
The apex court ruled that while the Federal Government possesses authority over navigation, maritime activities, fishing and international waterways, those powers do not extend to general control over lands adjoining waterways within states.
The court held that the National Assembly acted ultra vires by attempting to regulate adjoining lands for purposes outside navigation-related activities.

Accordingly, the court declared Sections 12 and 13 unconstitutional to the extent of their inconsistency with the Constitution.
The court specifically held that the federal government cannot rely on those provisions to deal with lands adjoining waterways for non-navigational purposes.

The judgment is expected to have far-reaching implications for waterfront development, land reclamation, urban planning, environmental regulation and revenue generation in Lagos and other coastal states.

Despite Lagos State’s partial victory, the Supreme Court declined to invalidate Sections 10 and 11 of the NIWA Act.
The court reaffirmed its earlier position in NIWA v. LSWA, holding that the Federal Government retains constitutional authority over matters relating to navigation and declared federal waterways.
Consequently, the court refused Lagos State’s requests for declarations that the National Assembly lacked legislative competence over waterways not specifically designated as international or inter-state waterways.
The Apex Court also rejected the argument that federal authority over inland waterways exists only where express declarations have been made by the National Assembly.

The refusal of those reliefs resulted in the 5-2 split among the justices.
One of the most consequential aspects of the judgment was the perpetual injunction granted by the court restraining the Federal Government from dealing “in any manner whatsoever” with lands adjoining waterways within Lagos State and other states for non-navigational purposes.
By limiting Federal powers over adjoining lands while preserving federal authority over navigation and waterways, the court drew a constitutional boundary between federal legislative competence and state territorial control.

The decision further reinforces the relevance of the Land Use Act and the constitutional recognition of state territories under Section 3 and the First Schedule to the Constitution.

The Supreme Court granted Lagos State’s reliefs seeking declarations that Sections 12 and 13 of the NIWA Act are unconstitutional and void to the extent of their inconsistency with the constitution.

The court also granted an order restraining the federal government from dealing with adjoining lands for non-navigational purposes.

However, it refused reliefs seeking declarations that the National Assembly lacks legislative competence over inland waterways not designated as international or inter-state waterways.

The court held that those claims had already been substantially addressed in the earlier NIWA v. LSWA decision.

The judgement is expected to shape future constitutional litigation on waterways, land administration, federalism, and resource control across Nigeria.
