Facts have emerged showing why Senate President Bukola Saraki led a delegation of Senators to meet former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his hilltop mansion, Abeokuta, Ogun state on Friday. A source close to the meeting told PREMIUM TIMES that the Senate President was in Abeokuta to beg Mr. Obasanjo to reconcile him with President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC. Mr. Saraki emerged as the president of the Senate against the decision of APC leaders. He was also elected when most Senators from the APC were at the International Conference Centre waiting to hold a meeting with Mr. Buhari to discuss the election of the Senate president and Speaker of the House of Representatives. Our sources said Mr. Saraki lamented to Mr. Obasanjo that although the party leaders have stated that they have accepted his emergence, there was “complete communication breakdown between him, the president and the party”. The national chairman of the APC, John Oyegun, had abruptly cancelled a scheduled meeting with Mr. Saraki last week without giving another appointment. Likewise, we also gathered that Mr. Saraki had tried severally to meet with Mr. Buhari after his emergence, but was always denied audience. Another source in the presidency informed us that the President was angry with Mr. Saraki and the management of the national assembly for going ahead with their election despite adequate knowledge of an invitation for a meeting with Mr. Saraki and his colleagues. “The president considered it as a mark of disrespect for his office for Saraki to ignore an invitation to meet with him and his colleagues,” our source said. In his response to the Senate President’s lamentation, Mr. Obasanjo reportedly promised to do his best to “ensure communication between all parties”. However, the spokesperson for the president, Garba Shehu, said the Senate president has never sought a meeting meeting with Mr. Buhari since his election. “I am not aware of any request for a meeting, the president would have seen him, he represents a key institution in our democracy,” he said. Calls to Mr. Saraki and his aide, Bamikole Omishore, were not answered. Our source said the former president, in his usual jocular self, also joked with the delegation, saying “ you children of nowadays only run to elders when you have finished making the damage”. Mr. Saraki and his entourage laughed. A presidency official told PREMIUM TIMES President Buhari was aware of the the senate president’s visit to Mr. Obasanjo’s home. The official said Messrs Buhari and Obasanjo are constantly in touch and regularly have telephone conversations. The official said in one of their recent conversations, Mr. Obasanjo informed Mr. Buhari that Mr. Saraki was leading a delegation of Senators to his Abeokuta home. “I overheard President Buhari laughing and saying to Mr. Obasanjo, “you have to see them, are they not all your boys?”, our presidency source said. Among Mr. Saraki’s delegation include former governor of Gombe state, Danjuma Goje, Senator Andy Uba, former Zamfara governor, Ahmed Sani, and former Osun governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Mr. Saraki and most members of his delegation are largely Mr. Obasanjo’s “boys”, a term loosely used in describing the former president’s staunch loyalists. http://www.bookofy.com/how-to-make-money-online/ |

This was addressed at the National Secretariat in Abuja today. He further made comments that Nigerians would find it easier to re-elect Goodluck Jonathan to be president again. |

IG cautions Nigerians on Xmas gifts The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has cautioned Nigerians to be vigilant while receiving gifts from unknown persons that may pose as friends during the Yuletide season, to avoid explosive-laden hampers as gifts. The IG also warned against the use of fireworks and other explosives during the celebration, noting that they could cause distraction that may further heighten fear of insecurity. According to a statement, on Wednesday in Abuja, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the police boss enjoined citizens to shun all forms of violence and unlawful acts. He also advised them to eschew bitterness and rancour and urged them to go about their legitimate duties without fear of intimidation during and after the festive season. Meanwhile, the IG has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Command Commissioners of Police, to take all necessary measures in ensuring the provision of adequate security for worshippers, travellers, picnickers and all citizens across the country before, during, and after the festivity. “Command Commissioners of Police are to personally ensure that all key and vulnerable points within their jurisdictions, including places of worship, recreation centres, motor parks, highways, financial institutions and all places of public resort are adequately and effectively protected,” the statement added. The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has revealed that the Federal Government may review the current JAMB admission policy. According to him, this is to ensure that more number of candidates are admitted into Colleges of Education as the nation needs more teachers. “Only the dregs of candidates who sit for UTME annually and fail to gain admission into universities are left for the Colleges.” “It is hoped that a policy will be developed to guarantee the Colleges enough students to be admitted, “he said. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again torn at President Goodluck Jonathan, saying Nigerian democracy remained at risk due to the action of the present administration. Speaking at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Mustapha Akanbi, in Abuja, Mr. Obasanjo, who is the Chairman of the occasion, said the president should stop encouraging ‘verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence’. Mr. Obasanjo said the greatest indictment against any administration is to be seen trying to destroy opposition of all sorts which invariably mean destroying democracy. “Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” the former President said. “As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.” The former president also spoke at lenght on the President’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, corruption, the economy and youth unemployment. On insecurity, Mr. Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to “frustrate anyone’s political efforts” and lamented that it took Mr. Jonathan the years to fully understand the menace. On corruption, Mr. Obasanjo said, “when the head is rotten, the whole body is useless” On the economy, he said Nigeria would continue to sink deeper and that what Nigerians are told about the state of the economy “is not truly what the economy is”. “The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he said. Mr. Obasanjo’s latest attack on the President is coming seven days after he rated Mr. Jonathan’s performance as below average. The former president had spoken last weekend in Abeokuta while addressing book writers as part of activities marking the Ake Arts and Book Festival. “I rate this current administration below average,” Mr. Obasanjo said in response to a question about Mr. Jonathan’s performance. The former president also said he deserved credit for helping an individual from a minority tribe become Nigeria’s President. “Rather than take blame for bringing Jonathan to power, I should be taking credit,” he added. The Nigerian presidency responded Sunday, slamming Mr. Obasanjo and describing his rating as untrue and misleading. In a statement in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said Mr. Obasanjo’s rating was at variance “with the facts on the ground”. Mr. Okupe said President Jonathan had performed so well that “in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan”.
