PoliticsOrigin Of The Dance Troupe At The Back Of N5 Bill- PICTURES by AuntLaVIV(op):

The magical Mkpokiti Dance of our people has bagged the United Nations Gold Medal of Culture and Exhibitions.the best Igbo traditional dance steps

Mkpokiti dance was founded in 1959 by late Chief Festus Okoli Nwankwo of Ugwunano village of Umunze in Orumba local government of Anambra state. Chief Festus created the dance and patented it with Registration No: FGN/TI/614314.

In 1970, all the states of the Nigerian federation were summoned in Lagos to celebrate the end of the civil war. Among the programmes lined up for the celebrations was the cultural dance competition from all the states. A cash prize of 3,000 British Pounds and a gold gong were prizes for the first place in cultural dances. The competition started from villages to the divisions and to the states. From village level to the national stage, Mkpokiti secured first position and won the coveted gold gong and cash prize in Lagos.

This stimulated other dance groups in the country with the result that in 1971, many dance groups registered for the competition. The final competition for the year took place in Ibadan and Mkpokiti maintained the lead.

In 1972 – 1973 in Kaduna, the case was the same. Since inception, the Mkpokiti dance group has never obtained a second position in any competition. Formerly, Anambra state government chose Mkpokiti as its state dance but after the continuous clinching of first position in national competitions, the federal government adopted Mkpokiti as a national dance. Mkpokiti represented the federal government in FESTAC ’77 at Lagos. In New York, Washington, Jamaica, Barbados, Brazil, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Port of Spain, and England, Mkpokiti dance has been exhibited as the greatest cultural dance in Africa.

The Satinsheen Company under the management of Miss Franca Afebua took Mkpokiti dance to a global competition in Wembley, England. All the groups competed in Oxford University, England. As expected, Mkpokiti dance secured the1st prize there and carried the World Cup back to Nigeria.

The federal government has taken Mkpokiti dance group to ALL THE PARTS OF THE WORLD except Australia. The achievements made in these travels including winning the World Cup multiple times even in New York, Algeria and North Korea a few years ago rightly crowned the legendary Mkpokiti dance of Igbo people the greatest cultural dance in the world.

NBS Publishes Additional 11 States Nominal GDP From 2013 to 2017

GDP of an economy, including at State level, is a measure in monetary terms of production of all goods and services during a period. Like the compilation at the national level, State accounts statistics are based on the guidelines and recommendations set out in the System of National Accounts 2008 (SNA 2008). The System of National Accounts provides an internationally-recognised framework and a comprehensive set of concepts, definitions and classifications for national accounting. Additionally, other relevant guidelines adopted are the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC) as well as the Central Product Classification (CPC) system.

States GDP compilation is important and useful for various purposes. First, it provides important information to support evidence-based policymaking. It also helps to identify key drivers of economic growth in each state and assess the performance of the state economy. Further, by revealing the structure of the state economy, the contribution of each state to the national output can be determined.

Methodologically, National/State accounts describe all flows within a period between the economic units constituting the national /state economy and their stocks. As such, the States accounts can follow national accounts as long as one can clearly define and delineate a state, and its resident units in terms of institutional units, production units, consumer units within it. In short, SGDP is the sum of gross value added of all resident producer units (industries) within the economic borders of the state during a given period of time including taxes, less subsidies, on products.

The institutional units / sectors in the States include: Non-financial corporations (Flour Mills, Nestle, etc), Financial corporations (Banks, Insurance etc), State governments, Non-profit institutions serving households (NPISH) in the state, and Households. In compilation of SGDP, residence is not based on birth or legal criteria. Instead, an institutional unit is classified as resident if it has a centre of economic interest in the economic territory of a state. Certain activities cut across state boundaries, and thus their economic contribution cannot be assigned to any one state eg telecommunication, Railway line, Transportation, Banking & Insurance. Other activities like Defence, paramilitary, border security force, high sea drilling etc are kept outside the purview of the state GDP. Key data sources included in SGDP compilation include secondary/administrative data, surveys, financial statements, audited State government accounts and VAT returns, among others.

In practice, the compilation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates for sub-national units of the Federation has been a phased exercise at the National Bureau of Statistics since 2013. In the first phase, estimates for eleven (11) States – Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Kaduna, Kano, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Zamfara – were published in October 2018, providing estimates for states GDP for the five-year period covering 2013-2017. The completion of this initial phase of the SGDP compilation exercise revealed new insights regarding the structure of sub-national economies, while also demonstrating an improvement in statistical capacity for producing both national and state accounts.

This report provides estimates for the second phase of the States GDP compilation exercise covering an additional 11 states - Anambra, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kogi, Niger, Ondo - and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Thus, the results for all 22 states are provided and analysed in this report. This is expected to inform policymakers at all levels regarding absolute and relative magnitudes of economic activities in the reporting States, even as NBS continues efforts to complete the last phase of compilation for the remaining 15 States.

Summary of Findings

i. In 2017, the nominal gross domestic product for the 22 states (for which data is currently available) stood at N63.8trillion, or 56% of Nigeria’s nominal gross domestic product in that year.

ii. By sector, the 22 states accounted for 57%, 77% and 48% of agriculture, industry and services GDP at the national level respectively. Among the 22 states, however, services sector accounted for 67%, while agriculture accounted for 22% and industry, 11%.

iii. Among the 22 states, FCT had the highest gross domestic product at N10.6 trillion, or 17% of total states GDP. This was followed by Akwa-Ibom and Rivers States, each with 8% of total states GDP.

iv. In the FCT, services accounted for 81% of GDP while industry and agriculture accounted for 18% and 10% respectively. In Akwa-Ibom, however, industry accounted for 65% while services and agriculture accounted for 19% and 16% respectively.

v. Across the 22 states, the non-oil sector represented 98% of total states GDP while the oil sector accounted for only 2%.

vi. The 6 states with the highest nominal GDP in 2017 – FCT, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra – accounted for about 50% of the total states GDP, or 27% of Nigeria’s nominal GDP, in 2017.

Experts urge govs to set up laboratories As the COVID-19 pandemic rages in the country, 20 states are yet to have testing laboratories. Some of the states experiencing community transmission are among the top 10 with the disease.

This is happening as Nigeria’s testing capacity still trails behind what obtains in neighbouring African countries. As at Friday, Nigeria had 26 laboratories spread iacross 17 states. The country has also tested 40, 043 samples. This is far below the target set by the Federal Government to have about 68 test centres for COVID-19. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in its strategy document published on April 15, projected establishing 68 testing centres and two mobile laboratories within 45 days.

States without COVID-19 laboratories have lamented that they encounter hurdles sending samples to Abuja or other neighbouring states, as well as long waiting time for results. They said the absence of testing centres was one of their major challenges in the ongoing fight against the virus. Some states have to wait for over a week to get test results, with some of their drivers getting infected in the process of transporting samples.

Checks by Daily Trust Saturday revealed that Akwa Ibom, Benue, Bayelsa, Enugu, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, Yobe, Ekiti, Bauchi, Ondo, Zamfara, Abia, Taraba, Kogi, Cross River, Katsina, Gombe, Kwara have no COVID-19 testing laboratories. Some states have laboratories in hospitals or private facilities that could be upgraded for COVID-19 testing, however, that has not been done till date.

Ogun State, for instance, has established a molecular laboratory but still sends samples to Osun because it awaits NCDC accreditation. The state is in close proximity with Lagos, which has the highest number of COVID-19 cases. However, some states can boast of two or three laboratories.

They are Kano, Ogun, Lagos, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Sokoto, Edo, Anambra, Borno, Osun, Plateau , Oyo, and Ebonyi, among others. They, however, said there was minimal support from the NCDC or the Federal Government in setting up or funding most of the laboratories. In Gombe State, there is no testing laboratory for COVID-19. Here, samples are sent to the NCDC in Abuja for daily test. The state’s focal officer on COVID-19 response, Dr Mohammed Kwami, said the test results usually come out in at least 48 hours, after which they are scanned and sent back to the Special Task Force on COVID-19 secretariat.

He said taking the samples to Abuja on a daily basis was not convenient, but added that they are using the channel as a temporary measure, pending when the state would get its own laboratory.

Anambra state Ministry of Transport Inspects Passengers’ Manifests at Bridge Head, Onitsha.

By Chibuzor Okoye (ABS News)

The Commissioner for transport, Dr. Christian Mmadubuko, as well as officials of the ministry, Anambra Traffic Management Agency today Tuesday 24th March, 2020, visited bridge head Onitsha to inspect passengers’ manifests of all inter - State commercial buses entering into Anambra state.

Dr. Mmadubuko said that the exercise was in line with Governor Willie Obiano's directive that all persons coming into the state from other parts of the Country, must be documented for easy tracking in case of eventual case of Coronavirus.

The Commissioner equally used the infrared thermometer to check temperatures of inter -state passengers during the exercise.

ABS equally observed that an appreciable number of major inter -state commercial vehicles obeyed the directive.
