Health / How To Avoid The Silent Killer Known As Obesity by auogbet: 8:59am On Jan 13, 2016
Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. Body weight is made up of the muscles, bone, fat, and body water. Both Obesity and overweight presupposes that a person’s weight is greater than what’s considered healthy for his or her height and age. Obesity occurs over time when a person eats more calories than they use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might affect your weight include your genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.

Obesity can occur as result of certain physiological conditions that you may have, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and joint problems caused by extra weight. Others include gallstones and difficulty in breathing, including sleep apnea, in which you briefly stop breathing while you’re asleep. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions across the world. Over two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese, and one in three persons is obese. The prevalence of obesity in children has also increased considerably.

Politics / Most Nigerians Enjoy Suffering by auogbet: 3:28pm On Jan 12, 2016
Most Nigerians have suffered so much that they now enjoy suffering. They have given up hope and do not believe that it could be better. So they accept the status quo with the usual ‘the devil you know is better that the angel you don’t know’ cliché. They are so scared of change because the system has tortured them to a point where they can no longer take risks of trying something new. They would rather die in deprivation than take the chance of doing something different from the regular. Those that cannot take it anymore throng the airports and escape abroad. We are the most traveled people on earth. We are always quick to escape, even to countries that used to depend on Nigeria for help and direction. Who would have imagined Nigerians going to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Uganda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Namibia, Kenya and Angola for greener pastures?

Back in the day, our work ethic was one of the best but today our youth have been constrained to resort to internet fraud, armed robbery, kidnapping, ritual killings, prostitution and all sort of vices just to survive within and outside the country. While this goes on the political leadership engages in primitive accumulation of wealth and inordinate plundering of the country’s resources. The leadership does not care about the citizenry; neither do they believe in building enduring institutions that empower the masses. They are insulated from the suffering of the masses in their megalomaniac journey in the hallowed chambers of power and authority. Every passing year the government proclaims budgets and policies that are dead on arrival, while there is a continuous and precarious polarity between the needs of the common man and the means to actualize them.

Politics / Photo Of The Day: Beneficiary Of Governor Fayose’s Stomach Infrastructure by auogbet: 10:54am On Jan 12, 2016
Stomach infrastructure, a new vocabulary quietly crept into Nigeria’s political dictionary in the current dispensation. The vocabulary made its entry into Nigeria’s political lexicon after the Ekiti governorship election when voters were given gifts of bags of rice and other foodstuffs to influence their voting behavior. Distributing foodstuff during campaigns in Nigeria did not start with the Ekiti election. It has been happening in many parts of the country but it was elevated during the Ekiti election. My Photo of the day is a comical depiction of someone who is a typical beneficiary of stomach infrastructure. Please Click on the link below to see the photo. Thanks.

Jokes Etc / When Your Boo Knows You're Dieting And Eats Chicken And Rice While You Watch Him by auogbet: 8:30pm On Jan 11, 2016
According to Wikipedia, Dieting is the practice of eating food in a regulated and supervised fashion to decrease, maintain, or increase body weight. Dieting is often used in combination with physical exercise to lose weight, commonly in those who are overweight or obese. Some people, however, follow a diet to gain weight (usually in the form of muscle). Diets can also be used to maintain a stable body weight.

With this definition in mind try to imagine a scenario where you are dieting and your boo decides to descend on a full pack of chicken and rice while you are seated next to him. That’s what my PHOTO OF THE DAY depicts. This is humorous. The look on the lady’s face is priceless!

Romance / Why Women Should Not Seek Sex By Any Means Necessary by auogbet: 9:41am On Jan 11, 2016
It is commonplace in the modern world for most women to live lives of quiet desperation in which they give up on love. Such women are not interested in meaningful romantic relationships because they see romance and dating as a hassle. There are a set of identifiable reasons why women with this mindset act in this manner. These include the continued reduction in the number of eligible men and the vagaries of coping with the demands of love, marriage, parenting, and career pursuits.

The factors mentioned above make many women to jettison romance and true love. A good number of them go to the extreme and withdraw completely from having sex while a remarkable number of them put their focus into seeking sex by any means necessary. Most women exhibit signs of despair and anxiety when they find it difficult to locate true love. Women need to be careful with this kind of development and strive to get control of their love lives rather than contemplate the idea of giving up on love.

First every woman needs to have a clear understanding of what love and sex are. This is important because it is this understanding that will insulate them from the phobia and anxiety of not finding real love. There are three basic relationship disorders that a woman can lapse into if they are unable to wrap their hands around how to find real love.

Health / Are You Sure You Are Not Susceptible To Breast Cancer? by auogbet: 9:46am On Jan 09, 2016
The breast is made up of glands called lobules that can make milk and thin tubes called ducts that carry the milk from the lobules to the nipple. Breast tissue also contains fat and connective tissue, lymph nodes, and blood vessels. Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Indications of the occurrence of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from the nipple, or a red scaly patch of skin. In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin.

The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown. But certain things called risk factors can increase a woman’s chances of developing it. Like most cancers, the risk of developing breast cancer increases as women get older. Also there are noticeable small numbers of people who have a higher risk of developing breast cancer because other members of their family have had particular cancers.

Jokes Etc / Photo Of The Day: Nigerian Policeman Drinking And Smoking On The Road by auogbet: 9:34am On Jan 09, 2016
As many party-goers know, people crave nicotine more when they are drinking, and crave alcohol more when they are smoking. So there seems to be a direct correlation between smoking and drinking. In many countries the act of drinking in public places is strictly prohibited. It has not been outlawed in Nigeria yet but the sight of a policeman in uniform drinking alcohol and wielding a stick of cigarette on the road is not only unusual but quite strange and ridiculous. My Photo of the Day is that of a policemen who is caught on camera smoking and drinking on the road.

Health / Do You Know That Heart Disease Kills More People Than Aids? by auogbet: 8:05pm On Jan 06, 2016
The term "heart disease" is often used interchangeably with the term "cardiovascular disease." Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as those that affect your heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, also are considered forms of heart disease.

According to Wikipedia, ‘Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease includes coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack). Other CVDs are stroke, hypertensive heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, congenital heart disease, endocarditis, aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease and venous thrombosis’.

Politics / Reasons Why President Buhari Could Get The ‘jonathan Treatment’ by auogbet: 1:02pm On Jan 05, 2016
It has become a recurring decimal to see people who present themselves as die-hard President Jonathan followers threaten fire and brimstone and promise the current Buhari government a barrage of criticisms and insults in the same measure with which it was done to the Jonathan government in all six years of it’s existence. It is laughable because most of these people see criticism or opposition as an immutable end in itself. That is where they get it wrong. Being in the opposition and criticizing government is a means to an end and not an end in itself. In other words, being in the opposition has a goal to achieve. And that goal is not certainly to criticize or pull down the government of the day by all means.

Majority of us who criticized the performances of President Goodluck Jonathan were his staunchest supporters in 2011 and at the early stages of his tenure. We supported him in 2011 because we believed him when he promised a dint of fresh air. We turned full circle round from being ardent believers to his critics when the rising expectations we had were replaced with rising frustrations. His body language and utterances showed clearly that we were in for a different ride from what he promised during his electoral campaigns. At the end his scorecard did not guarantee him re-election.

Today Buhari is the president elect. Just like Jonathan in 2011, we elected Buhari because of his track record of having maintained a reasonable level of integrity and also because of the CHANGE he promised during his electoral campaigns. Just like in Jonathan’s case, we will hold Buhari accountable to his promises. The job of doing that is not the exclusive reserve of those who are aggrieved by Jonathan’s loss. Those of us who rose to the occasion and rooted for him in spite of all the intimidation and insults are even in a more moral acceptable position to demand an account of his stewardship. The job of holding Buhari accountable to his promises is equally that of every Nigerian, irrespective of party affiliations, ethnicity, religion or any other segmental cleavage.

Health / Understanding The Power Of Commitment In Relationships by auogbet: 12:54pm On Jan 05, 2016
Commitment connotes the act of pledging to do something or getting obligated to someone or something. When it is applied to relationships, it means devoting both your love and your life to your partner and ensuring that your relationship with them works. When you make a decision to be committed to someone, you give the person total attention and place them above everyone else.

Commitment is driven by the resolve to give and to receive. It involves making compromises, effective communication and the readiness to endure rough patches with your significant other. Commitment isn’t always a smooth phenomenon. It can be scary and fraught with unpredictability. The very unpredictable and obligatory nature of commitment makes a lot of people to run away from it out of fear and uncertainty. The element of commitment that scares people most is its un-changeability and permanent nature. People develop cold feet at the prospect of committing their life, resources, emotions, and entire being to one person.

Commitment propels you to undertake activities that will lubricate the relationship and keep it moving smoothly. Commitment is intelligible both with married and unmarried couples. Commitment is diametrically antithetical to selfishness and insensitivity. Once you get into the zone of commitment, you quit thinking about yourself alone and start thinking for you and your partner by default. You suddenly come to the realization that anything you do is capable of impacting on your partner. Commitment makes you to abhor outrageous and opprobrious actions and encourages you to undertake outstanding and satisfactory activities.

Family / How To Tell If Your Child Is Suffering From Attention Deficit Disorder by auogbet: 10:30am On Jan 04, 2016
There are a myriad of misunderstandings associated with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However both conditions can adversely affect people of all ages and they sure can mess up the academic and everyday functions of people who suffer from both conditions. Both conditions are complicated brain based disorders that are generally misunderstood and misdiagnosed in people of all races, ages and social status.

Attention deficit disorder is simply the inability of a child or adult to focus attention. Children afflicted with this condition often have glaring challenges with keeping pace and paying attention long enough to understand and perform any given task. This condition often proliferate other problems such as low self-esteem and poor academic performance. The most glaring trait of attention deficit disorder is erratic behavior.

Suffice to say that certain behaviors exhibited by children could be as a result of developmental and environment factors and not necessarily attention deficit disorder. In other words there are certain normal aspects of a child’s pattern of behavior that may look like symptoms of attention deficit disorder during their formative years. For example, a child who has irregular sleeping hours and other sleeping disorders at night might have challenges paying attention at school in the daytime.

Family / When You Hear That Your Husband Is Somewhere Spending His Salary On Prostitutes by auogbet: 10:21am On Jan 04, 2016
It has been generally argued that men cheat because of loneliness in their relationship or marriage, affirmation from “the other woman, and not enough attention at home. When your partner shows up without their wedding ring or suddenly stops wearing it and makes lame excuses as to why you should know that he may be seeing someone else. This also goes for jewelry you might have purchased for them and you catch them not wearing it when they go out when usually they wear it at all the time. But when you actually confirm that he is doing it and does not even attempt to hide it, it can be very depressing and worrisome. My photo of the day is a priceless facial reaction that could be likened to that of a lady who is familiar with her husband’s philandering and who has gotten a call that he is at it again.

Politics / What If Biafra Becomes A Reality? by auogbet: 6:03pm On Jan 02, 2016
Biafra was a secessionist state in south-eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to 15 January 1970. It took its name from the Bight of Biafra. The inhabitants were mostly the Igbo people who led the secession due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The creation of the new state that was pushing for recognition was among the causes of the Nigerian Civil War. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain’s formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960–1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup, and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over oil production in the Niger Delta also played a vital strategic role.

Over the years, the tensions between the Igbo speaking parts of South –Eastern Nigeria and the federal government have refused to abate. Many sons and daughters of Igbo extraction believe that they have not been fairly treated in the Nigerian experiment. The 2015 presidential elections which produced Muhammadu Buhari as president, have further heightened these tensions. There is no gainsaying that the Igbo people voted massively against this denouement because they preferred a continuation of a Goodluck Jonathan presidency. To underscore the resentment of those who are not at home with a Buhari leadership a new organization known as Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) was formed by Nnamdi Kanu, a Nigerian immigrant based in England. Kanu, among other things established Radio Biafra through which he and his lieutenants broadcast strong messages of dissent and sometimes hate against Nigeria and her leadership. Radio Biafra they said is dedicated to the defense of rights of the indigenous people of Biafra and ultimately the actualization of the Republic of Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Lagos recently and has not been able to fulfil his bail conditions. His incarceration has led to demonstrations in some parts of eastern Nigeria and selected parts of the diaspora. The current agitations bring a couple of questions to mind. What If Biafra succeeded? What are the far reaching consequences of the actualization of a Republic of Biafra? Will an Independent Biafran state be a better deal for Ndigbo? Is secession really what Ndigbo need? Are there other possible solutions to these tensions?

I am of the firm belief that any set of people should have the right to decide whether they want to remain part of any union or not. Therefore, the people of South-East Nigeria have the right to decide whether they want to remain part of Nigeria or not. But before they exercise that right, they need to be sure that it is overtly necessary. Ndigbo are by far some of the most blessed and industrious people in this country. The problem is that Igbo people are asking for what they already have. It is erroneous and misleading to think that what Ndigbo actually need is an independent republic. Ndigbo already have a geographical territory known an Eastern Nigeria or what is now known as the South-East geopolitical zone. Except in the military era, the South East has always been governed by Igbo governors and represented in the national assembly by Igbo people. This is the same situation with the other regions or geo-political zones.

Health / How To Adjust Your Lifestyle In Order To Combat Lupus Disease by auogbet: 5:52pm On Jan 02, 2016
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system, for inexplicable reasons, becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue. These attacks produce inflammation and other symptoms. People who suffer from this disease are usually diagnosed with a series of strange abnormalities such as swollen fingers, memory loss, tiredness and painful joints.

Lupus is a disease that has the capacity to take its victims through physical and psychology trauma. Most often lupus constrains it's victims to experience heart failure. It is often difficult to diagnose lupus because it has the attributes or symptoms of many other diseases. To this end it is possible to misconstrue or misdiagnose lupus as arthritis, anemia or arthralgia. Lupus weighs down on the nervous system, the skin, joints and vital organs. Lupus can affect different parts of the body, depending on the stage of the disease.

There are some signs or symptoms to look out for before the disease becomes life threatening. Such signs include, joint pains, arthritis, fever, fatigue, skin rashes, anemia, kidney inflammation, chest pains, hair loss, mouth ulcers and seizures. Some experts believe that environmental and genetic factors may cause lupus. The key to finding a cure to this disease is to ascertain what caused it. Your treatment will depend on how severe symptoms are, whether organs are involved, and if your daily life is affected.

While medications can't cure lupus, they can control symptoms -- and possibly prevent organ damage. Today, physicians treat lupus using a wide variety of medicines, ranging in strength from mild to extremely strong. Prescribed medications will usually change during a person’s lifetime with lupus. However, it can take months—sometimes years—before your health care team finds just the right combination of medicines to keep your lupus symptoms under control. Good nutrition is important to keeping your body fueled and strong during lupus treatments.

Nairaland / General / Should A Wife Confront Her Husband’s Girlfriend? by auogbet: 2:19pm On Jun 27, 2015
It could be emotionally devastating to discover that your husband is having extramarital affairs with another woman. It is also natural for the wife to want to confront the other woman whether out of anger, vendetta, curiosity or the psychological need to let out some verbalized frustration. Suffice to say that the cheating spouse, which in this case is the husband, is the one who betrayed the union by breaking his commitment and he should be held accountable for his actions. At the same time it is expedient to say that the girlfriend is an equal partaker in this deceit and should also be held accountable for her Ignoble role.

Incidentally, while confronting her may go a long way to provide some temporary respite, it will not in any way resolve the problem permanently. The way the girlfriend will respond during the confrontation may be diametrically different from her demeanour after she had had ample time to sit back and reflect on what was said to her during the verbal vents. Most girlfriends confronted by their boyfriend’s spouses will initially be defensive; but their defensive attitude will lapse into a much more sober mood when the rantings and ravings have long elapsed.

Nairaland / General / VIDEO: Spider Emerging From Banana That You Are About To Eat Is Your Worst Night by auogbet: 10:09pm On Jun 20, 2015
Most people have heard that you swallow 8 spiders a year in your sleep. Thankfully that ‘fact’ isn’t true at all, but it still makes most people squeamish. The same is true with this video in which a spider emerges from a banana like some sort of alien. The video captures the terrifying moment the spider bursts out of the banana. As camera focuses in on fruit, it's clear there's something inside Then a hole is made, and chillingly, two legs poke out After some more cutting is done, a spider tumbles out on its back.
