Shadows (episode sixteen )

They have all been sitting quietly for a while now, lost in thoughts. It’s getting clearer their deaths are imminent. But it’s just a few hours to daybreak and that’s something to look forward to. If they had survive this long, they could as well get out of it alive.
They had decided to stay in a spot, there was no reason to keep going. The sun would come up soon and they’ll have a better chance of finding their way out.
The death of Moji had made quieted Emma down a great deal. He seemed disinterested in absolutely everything, he didn’t even care about surviving and getting out alive. The all-time trash talker became a mute.
Lanre: I think I’ve finally figured this out….
Mary: I hope so love.
Lanre: Who remembered what led to the first death….
Daniel: That’s John and Shade… they left the camp and went into the bush..
Lanre: Good… the next death was Kamoru….. He left the group to get the bus and didn’t return.
Emma: Halimat died after she left us and went back to the cabin…
Lanre: Tobi, JC and Helen left us and we never saw them again….
Emma: Habeeb was alone when we found him and Temmy was attacked when she left Moji, Class rep and I.
Uche: What about Timothy? He was with us when he died.
Mary: We all ran out of the cabin, Timothy went back to get Halimat…. Going back is the same as leaving the group.
Temmy: The hunter guy died right in front of us remember?
Lanre: The hunter was never part of us, he died for trying to help us. Look guys….What was the point of this camp in the first place.?
Daniel: Uhm… to get closer, know ourselves better and be a team.
Lanre: That’s togetherness…. Everyone who had died, die when they virtually or practically left the group or left the camp… The shadow told me to figure it out….. Moji…. and Moji just died when we got divided.
Emma: That was your idea Daniel… you freaking bastard!
Lanre: Emma… we can’t blame anyone for what has been happening.
Emma: Shut your mouth you too…. you said it was Okay to go back and we did.
Lanre: What?? You’re going to pin this on me? You think i asked for this? That i want to be responsible for the lives of my friends? I said it was okay to go back but must you listen to me? Now… all of a sudden I’m the guy you listen to when all my plead for you idiots to not piss the cat guy off were totally ignored…..
Emma…You’re not the only one who has lost someone here so you better man up for once and get over yourself!
Silence…..
Lanre: I’m tired guys… I’m tired of losing someone…. tired of telling someone it’s gonna be okay and minutes later watch their corpse lay on the ground…. I’m tired
Emma: (Sighs….) Okay…. but uhmm…. you said we all just need to stick together right.
Mary: That’s the general idea
Emma: What’s the Shadows’ freaking business if i don’t wanna be social with my classmates? I mean… yea, the reason for camping was to get closer but then if we decide we don’t wanna be close anymore, must the stupid shadow force us ?
Lanre: Good question Emma! Why don’t you take a walk in that direction maybe you’d meet the shadow and he’ll explain things to you.
Emma: Naaah…. I’m good! I’ll just stick right here.
Temmy: But what if i wanna ease myself or something, do i have to do that if front of you guys?
Lanre: It’s important we stay together Temmy.
Emma: By the way…. there’s nothing to hide, I’ve been seeing your pants for 3 months now…. you sit carelessly in class.

Daniel: You know guys…. I might die any moment from now, i don’t want the last talk i have on earth to be Temmy’s pants please.
Emma: Mehn… that’s true o! Na highway to hell fire be that i swear

Emma: But guys, come to think of it, Shade and John were killed while they were aroused right? They were about to have sex… hahahaha
Mary: Emma…. don’t do that, respect the dead.
Emma: Yea i know that….but you all know it’s funny right? Uhhn…maybe my guy was even on top of her when the Shadow came for them…. Kai…. Hell fire o! They’ll now get to heaven’s gate naked.. “my guy’s something go com stand gidigba for angel front”
Everyone laughed this time, shaking their heads as they watched Emma dramatize all he was saying. On the outside he looks like he’s gotten over Moji but he was burning up inside and Lanre knew it. They’ve been close for awhile and Emma always finds a comic relief to every situation around him, it doesn’t matter how bad or how hurt he is.
Their laughter was cut short as an image ran right behind them, getting everyone sprung up on their feet. Looking around but they saw no one.
No one said a word, they all just stood up looking around until Daniel spoke.
Daniel: What was that?
Uche: I don’t know…. did anyone see anything?
Lanre: Let’s calm down… i think the shadow is trying to scare us off so we can all split up again..
Emma: Ahh… It’s working man… Because if that thing… whatever that thing is… run behind me like that again , I’ll tear away from here real fast.
Lanre: Just calm down Okay… we’ll all walk out of here slowly.
Emma: Good idea… slowly and without dying…. it’s important to add the last part.
They back one another so everyone was facing different directions and looking around.
They moved slowly, dragging their feet. Right to where Emma was facing, the image ran across again
Emma: Holy ghost Jesus son of man!!!
Lanre: (whispering) What is it Emma?
Emma: Is there a way we can move faster.
Mary: Oh my God….. Guys look here.
Slowly they all turned their heads to see what direction Mary was pointing to…
Daniel: Oh maaan…. Are those ……?
Emma: Graves? Yes they are!
Daniel: Damn… Are we all standing in …….?
Emma: Cemetery? Yes we are!
Startled, they all have have been sitting and resting in a cemetery.
Emma: Emmm… Is it just me, or does what we are standing on feels like concrete?
Silence….. They all looked down….
Lanre: Yeey…. move…. we’re standing on someone’s grave!
In a flash, they dashed off the grave they were standing on. Emma jumped off and landing face first on another grave but he didn’t realise that just yet.
He winced in pain as migraine ran over his head. Still on the ground, he touched and rubbed his forehead.
The rest went to him to see if he was alright.
Mary: You okay Emma?
Emma: Yea, just wanna lie down a little b….
His statement was cut short as the grave he layed on started vibrating. He rose up in fear, watching in disbelief as were the others.
They first thing they saw was a hand rising up, trying to get out of the grave.
No one waited to see the rest of the body. They ran in the same direction this time.
As they ran, they noticed they were deeper into the cemetery than they first thought.
The graves were opening up and more bodies were hauling out of the graves.
Lanre: Keep running okay…. no one should look back…
Emma; Too late…. i looked back and their still coming o. I think they want to eat us….
But Uche whose leg was wounded kept drawing them back. Lanre and Daniel were by his side, his arms on their shoulders as they lift him. Emma of course, was with the girls upfront but he wouldn’t lead for the fear of running into something so he made sure Mary and Temmy were in front of him with Lanre, Uche and Daniel behind him.
They finally got to the main entrance of the cemetery, it has a gate..
Lanre; We have to lock this gate or they’ll come out after us.
But the gate was blocked, the only hook to it was inside and no way to lock it from outside
Emma: Woow… what kind of idiot design a gate like this? Does he expects the dead people to lock the gate themselves.
Daniel: I think the better question is what is a cemetery doing in the middle of nowhere… what kind of people did they bury here.
Temmy: They are angry dead people i swear.
Mary: But the good thing is, o believe we’re closer to getting on the road, at least the people who buried the dead here got here somehow. We should find a road soon.
Lanre: let’s keep going….
They started moving but Uche stayed….
Daniel: C’mon Uche! Let’s go!
Uche: (sighs) …you guys go…. I’ll stay in and lock the gate…
Daniel: Are you insane! Let’s go man!
Uche:If we leave this gate opened, they will come out after us and then we’ll keep running but i can’t run on these legs…. I’ll keep holding you down and they might get us all….so go on.
Lanre: Uche! Don’t even think for one moment that we’re going to leave you here… if i have to beat your ass and drag you out of here with us…. i will!
Uche: Don’t you understand? I brought this upon us! I kicked that man out, if i didn’t, all these wouldn’t have happened
Lanre: We don’t know that!!
Uche: No Lanre! We do! And you know I’m right. How can i live with myself knowing i caused all these deaths? If i run off with you, we’ll might need to run again and i won’t be able to…
Daniel: No man, don’t do this.
Uche: It’s my decision and I’ve decided. I want my death to mean something. Give me this last opportunity to save your lives before i die! All our classmates are dead and i feel responsible, i will die happy knowing my last act was to make sure my friends survive this.
Lanre knew Uche got his mind made up already… he sighed, moved closer to him and gave him a hug.
Lanre: Thank you man.
Daniel, Temmy and Mary hugged him too. All in tears
Emma: You know Uche…. I promise not to tell anyone you screamed like a girl when you saw a snake.
They forced some laughters out while wiping tears off their eyes… They looked up again and saw the bodies hauling themselves towards the group.
Uche: You guys go now… I’ll lock the gate from inside….go!
They started dragging their feets.
Uche: Guys! Move now! Stop acting like dummies, don’t make me feel like I’m giving my life for idiots….
They watched in horror as Uche limped back behind the gate and began closing them. He gave a last look at them….
Uche: I never had any…. but in the last few hours, you guys were my family and I’m glad i spent my last moments with you….
He closed the gate and hooked it from behind making sure it held tight. The rest continued running, Lanre held Mary tight as they ran together. It was 5:00 in the morning, all they heard were humming birds and Uche’s screams and then…… silence.

Lanre : So tell me Emma, have you talked to her yet?
Emma: No… I’m still strategising. Planning my move so that when i finally talk to her, she wouldn’t be able to say no.
Lanre: Hmmmm… that sounds like a bad excuse for being a coward.
Emma: No jor… You see man! Moji is a special kind of girl, i have to be on my best behavior when i approach her.
Lanre: I must say you’re wasting time. That guy in 400L is already getting pretty close to her, he’s getting her attention already.
Emma: Haaa.. speaking about that 400 level guy….. i didn’t tell you before. When he heard that Moji would be going to the camp, he came to me to register for the camp too.
Lanre: And….what did you do?
Emma: What do you think i did…? I took his money, didn’t register him, but went into a very fine boutique to buy clothes that i will impress Moji with at the Camp.
Lanre: Hahahahaha….. common! You didn’t do that!
Emma: You bet i did!
Lanre: What if he discover you didn’t register him?
Emma: I will tell him it was due to some unforeseen difficulties.
Lanre: Hahaha… and if he got angry nko??
Emma: Get angry ke? I will remind him some of his mates are lying in a fridge in the mortuary and instead of him complaining about his money, he should be grateful to God for the gift of life.

Just a few hours left to dawn and it looks more and more like the remaining seven of them might just survive this and make it out of the forest. Though Emma keeps telling them, they’re all going to die, Lanre, on the other, still was optimistic about things.
Daniel: Guys… How did we get here?
Emma: Uhmm… we took a bus na, luxurious bus driven by Kamoru.
Daniel: That’s not what I’m asking you dummy. How did we get ourselves in this situation.?
Lanre: The cat guy… we should just have apologized to him. But no…you all told Uche to kick him out of the bus.
Moji: I didn’t encourage him to do that.
Temmy: Me too.
Daniel: I didn’t say that too o
Emma: Hahaha… see them all…pussies! No one would say they were involved now. Me? I think I’m paying for all the bad I’ve done. That’s why God led me here.

Daniel: So we can just conclude you took all the lost textbooks in class?

They found a spot near a tree where they all sat. Since the Class rep died, they felt they were all safe. But somehow they still watched their backs and over their shoulders.
Mary sat by Lanre, her head on his shoulder as he held her close. The night had been a long and gruesome one and they both are glad they still have eachother.
Lanre rested his head on the tree behind them. It was a few minutes before he heard footsteps around him, he opened his eyes to see everyone holding themselves and standing in front of him.
Mary: Lanre! It’s here again. The shadow is here.
Lanre looked up and right on top of him was the shadow, he couldn’t move, it felt like his hands and legs had been tied down by something he couldn’t see. All he saw was Mary as she cried in the distance.
Lanre: Please….let my friends go.. please… you can have me but spare my friends.
The Shadow quickly changed into the image of the man whose cat they had accidentally killed on their way coming.
Cat guy: I’m sorry Lanre but i can’t do that
Lanre: All these because we hit your Cat? This is unfair, it was an accident and you know it.
Cat guy: You didn’t hit my Cat Lanre. I am the cat and yes, i intentionally ran into the bus
Lanre: Why would you do that?
Cat guy: No reason, i just did! It could have been any body but you were chosen
Lanre: Chosen ? Chosen for what?
Cat man: Chosen to die. You see everybody will die eventually, it’s my job to choose who dies next. Sometimes i run into cars that way, they’ll hit me and go but they won’t reach their destination because i will cause them to have an accident. I decide who dies and who doesn’t.
Lanre: Then why all these huh? Why didn’t you just cause us to get into an accident, let us die and just stop all these theatrics?
Cat Man: I saw you people like to have fun. you laughed and enjoyed the show so I decided to have fun with you.
Lanre: And all these was yo ur idea of fun? Who the hell are you?
Cat man: Call me the link between life and death. That’s why I’m a shadow, it’s like not being alive and not being dead…I’m real enough to be seen and so unreal that i can’t be held . I am Shadows. Prayers can’t stop me because death is inevitable…. you pray? You die…. you don’t pray? You still die. You and your colleagues have been chosen. You can’t run away from death…i will kill all of them and you Lanre would be my last, I’ll let you watch everyone die before i finally take you too.
Lanre: (crying ) This is so unfair! What the hell did we do to deserve this!!?
Cat man: You still don’t get this Lanre! Everyone gets to die eventually… no one needs to deserve it, no one is too good to die… people die because people are meant to die. That’s it! I didn’t make the rules, I’m just the link that decide how people would die. If you think it’s unfair, then take it to the God or Allah you people believe in so much.
Lanre: Tell me, is there a way we can survive this night and go home? Maybe postpone the time we going to die…let us live and leave to die another day…is there a way to do that?
Cat man: Smart boy… of course, there is, we can always bend the rules and protocols…. that’s why you see someone survive a plan crash….someone shot but didn’t die…an accident happened and only one person survive it. You people call it a miracle but that they didn’t die that day does not mean they wouldn’t get to die eventually…. their death was just postponed to a later day.
Lanre: How can the rest of us get our dying day postponed? How can we survive this night. We just can’t vanish into thin air…20+ plus of us just left school and came here….at least someone needs to tell people what happened here in this forest.
Cat man: You can postpone your dying day but what needs to be done is left to you Lanre. You have to figure it out… If you want to save your friends… if you want to save your girlfriend, you have to figure it out Lanre….. figure it out!
Lanre: No! Tell me what needs to be done…..you bastard… tell me now…..tell me now…….Tell me….Tell me now… ..

Mary: Lanre….Lanre wake up…..wake up!
Lanre opened his eyes to see everyone standing in the same way he had seen in the dream….it was all a dream. He jumped up on his feet started looking around.
Emma: Well…it took a long time before someone run mad eventually.
Uche: What’s up man! What’s wrong with you?
Lanre: I saw him, he came to me… told me we’re all going to die except i figure out a way to postpone out deaths.
Emma: Good… you’re the smartest person i know and i know alot of people. So figure it out man.
Lanre: I don’t know what to think, I’ve done everything i possibly could, i don’t know what else to say or do.
Temmy: So whether we live or die depends on how long you figure this out.
Uche: So we all just need to work together… rub minds….use our brains… rub our brains together and think this through…
Emma: Hahaha… what brains are you talking about? Daniel and Temmy for example, have no or little brains… And you Uche, i always see your test scores man , I’ll rather have two dicks than have the kinda brain you have. So please.. let’s not rub any brains together abeg, i prefer to die in this bush than have you rub your brains with mine…. Oh…Mary! No one said a word as they kept moving they needed to go back to the route the hunter was taking them before they lost Halimat and before the class rep met them. Daniel moved closer to Lanre to start a conversation
Daniel: So… how is the thinking going?
Lanre: I don’t know man.
Daniel: Just relax ok? I’m sure it will come to you.
Lanre: Thanks bro. I appreciate that
Daniel: Anytime… so tell me, you and Mary.. your love seems like that of Romeo and Juliet… how did you get to do that… She’s very rich, i mean her dad is, how come you got her attention?

Daniel: I was in love once too. Gave her all i could, loved her with everything, i was a playboy but i gave it up for her but still one day, she felt i wasn’t good enough for her and she walked away.

Mary: i can’t believe she’s gone. She doesn’t deserve this
Moji: None of us deserves what is happening to us.
Mary: She was different! All she wanted to do was serve God, love and help people.
Daniel: She doesn’t shake people’s hands. Everyone thought she was just being proud.
Mary: Her religion doesn’t allow that…
Temmy: Really? The same religion that murder people who don’t worship their God ?
Mary: Both religion started off with Violence, you know? Christians murdered people too back in the day…..
Daniel: Yea….but then we became civilised and realized that’s not right . But they didn’t, they kept killing.
Temmy: Why are you defending them. Are you not a christian? You know what this people have turned the world into….
Lanre: Shut up!….Just shut up!!! Why the hell do we keep going back and forth…arguing over which religion is better for thousands of years and we still haven’t got tired….
…. I’ve seen a muslim man kill people, I’ve seen a pastor kill people…
One sees the other has been inferior for saying they’re God’s servant and the other sees the formal as being too pompous claiming to be God’s children!
People are bad just because they are bad and not because of how they choose to serve God! Good people and Bad people not Good religion and Bad religion.
They stood frozen in their thoughts, clinging to every word Lanre said…
Class rep: Hahahaha… you people keep arguing all the time. Religion is all a scam.

The anger in him was visible.. how dare Emma say he doesn’t believe in anything. He smiled to himself, thinking about how good it’s going to feel when he delivers all these idiots to the Shadows and save his father .

He tried his son’s number the 32nd time that night and got the same response he has been getting all night, the line kept reading unavailable. Now he’s at Igbo Alaye, he has driven all night to get here and hopefully stop his son before making a huge mistake.
Now he’s worried and scared, what the hell is his son doing to those poor and innocent boys and girls.

How could he have been so stupid to not have explained things to him when he became matured enough to understand.
But he has delayed it for too long and now his son might be on his way to jail for killing not one, not two but numerous people….. and what’s worse is, he might also be charged as an accomplice to the crime.

He got out of his car and looked around, pointing his torch towards the huge and dark forest that laid ahead. Where the hell I’m i gonna start from, he thought to himself.
How the hell did all these started?…. He closed his eyes as his mind drafted back in time.


He had graduated from University of Ilorin in 1997 as the best graduating student in Performing Arts. He was so good he could play any role, dance the traditional steps from virtually all the major tribes in Nigeria. He was so good. Everyone hailed him for having such a huge inbuilt talent, they said he has been destined for greatness and nothing can stop his rise to glory.
Fast forward to 7yrs after his graduation, he had no job, no money and no future. He returned to his village after touring Lagos, Abuja and the major cities looking for an employment. He was broke and hungry one night when he stumbled upon a picture of himself back in the day, on a stage in school, acting the role of a traditional priest. He looked so real and true…. that was how he started. Luckily for him, no one had come to his village to preach about Jesus Christ or Islam, he began scamming people, dressing in a fine red robe, seeing visions after taking a keg of palm wine. People came to him, he told them what they wanted to hear and then take their money but more kept coming from Lagos, Abuja and all over the world for his services. He was surprised one day when two Americans came to him, seeking for protection from kidnappers around the Niger Delta. He took their dollars, kidnapped them himself and got thousands of Dollars in ransom. He was in money, he got married and had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl.
His first son was the only one in the family who believes his father was some magical being sent from the gods. So when he got sick for real and tried to cash in on it, he had told his son to organise a camp, collect money from his classmates and run back home to save him but

he got the message wrong and thought killing them would save his father. He knows nothing about charm he didn’t even know how to make medicinal herbs or send a text message on phone, talking less of having some magical power.
He took a deep breath and started walking, looking around, for someone who claim to have powers, he was damn scared of the night. He was shivering in cold and the birds making those sounds around him are not helping matters either. He looked up and saw a bus, he ran towards it but found no one, all he saw was a bloody tire and different bags scattered around, looks like people have ran off in a hurry. He wondered, had his son chase them off with a cutlass or gun? He was their class rep, he might shouted a huge lie and they all took to their heels.
A movement behind the bus jolted him back to reality….
Man: Who is it?
Silence….
Man: Look, i don’t want any trouble. I’m just here to get my son, he is the class rep of this group….I’m sorry if he had done or said anything wrong but he had no idea i was only lying to people for money, telling them i have powers.
Still nothing but the movement continued. He began walking towards it, each step precise and slow.
As he peeped, his face was met my about 10 bats flying towards him, he turned to run,
screaming off but the bats wouldn’t stop, they were all around him, pecking on his face.
He swung his torch around, hoping to beat them off but they didn’t stop so he continued running. He ran fast, not minding what direction he was going. He hit his head hard on a tree and fell down back on the ground.
His lower back landed on a huge stone, breaking his back immediately. The pain he felt was nothing compared to his disappointment when he realized he couldn’t move his legs. Looks like he has broken his spinal cord.
He began a silent cry and turned his face to his side, all he saw was Kamoru’s head that had been crushed by the bus earlier… he screamed and shouted loudly, wiggling his body right to left and that was when he saw her, standing by a distance and smiling at him.
Man: Who are you? Please help me….please.
Halimat: My name is Halimat. Your son killed me because of the lies you told him. (She kept smiling)
He looked closely at her and saw she was floating off the ground, her skin glowing and radiant.
Man: Shut up and get me up ! Please help me.
But she was gone already. What remained was a figure, also floating but dark, very dark….it had no eyes but somehow, he knew the Shadow was looking at him in anger.
He began coughing again, harder than he ever did. He tried to ask for forgiveness from God, maybe that was why the girl came, to remind to ask for forgiveness.
The cough got louder, the Shadows stood on top of him, watching and waiting….
He coughed out blood first, then the food he ate few hours ago but he kept coughing still. He felt his stomach get watery…. the next thing he
coughed out was something that looked like his intestines, vomiting but kept coughing.
His lifeless body was on the ground, around him were blood and half of the internal organs he had coughed out.
The shadows watched on, laughed and then floated away.

3:51am.
They got to a hilltop connected to another hill top only by two ropes, one on top to hold and the other below to put their legs.
Emma: There’s no way in hell I’m going to cross this hill on that rope.
Temmy: Gosh.. that’s true! It’s so dark we can’t even see what’s below if anyone falls.
Class rep: Are you planning to fall? Since you’re scared, I’ll go first.
Lanre: Someone else should go first. Something tells me i shouldn’t trust you on this.
Class rep: So who wants to go?
Uche: I will!
The class rep bit his tongue in anger. This is where he was supposed to leave them. He would use the rope to cross then cut it when he gets to the other side so the Shadows can come for them.
Uche held the first rope and placed his legs on the other, dragging his feet, he got to the other side.
The next person to go was Temmy, then Mary, followed by Daniel. Moji almost fell but she grabbed herself up and got to the end.
Lanre: It’s your turn Emma.
Emma: Emmm…. Sorry can i go with you?
Lanre: No Emma! The weight might be too much and we might both fall.
Emma: Okay… will you guys wait for me while i turn around and find another route?
Lanre: Emma… the girls used the rope, use it too! We don’t have much time .
Emma: Yes i know…. but the thing is i am just 24yrs old and too young to die. Plus i have small hands that might not reach the top rope…. i also have a very soft skull too, if i fall down, my whole head would split open like a Watermelon..
Lanre: Emma!! I thought You said you’re 22yrs old before.
Emma:Ehn… That’s my football age but that’s not the point here.
Lanre: Relax bro…. take a deep breath go slowly, no haste and you’ll be fine.
Emma reluctantly grabbed the rope and started his trip, moving slowly and shaking all the way. They hailed him has he dragged along.
The treading of the lower rope began to get loosed but no one noticed it. By the time Emma got halfway through, the lower rope was being held by a single strand of tread but somehow he got to the other side safely.
Lanre: Your turn Class rep…
class rep: No you go.
Lanre: This is not a debate, i see you looking around like you expecting something. You’re up to no good. Whatever is on that side of the hill, you have to face it with us. If i go now, you might turn back and run off without us. So before i pick you up and throw you down the hill myself, you better get along and hold the rope now!
Class rep: Emm ehnn… you are joking right?
Lanre: Joking? Well…are you laughing?
Lanre stepped back and cracked his knuckles, that was enough to show the class rep he wasn’t fooling around.
The class rep turned to grab the rope and beside it was Halimat staring and smiling at him, he moved back and screamed in fear…. running around.
CLass rep: Go away… you are dead….i killed you already…
Lanre: Killed who?
Class rep: Can’t you see her? Halimat she’s right there.
Lanre: (looking around) What?…. Wait You killed Halimat? You devil.
Class rep: Yes, i brought you all here to sacrifice you all for my father’s ailmemt.
Halimat: (Audible only to the Class rep) You fool! Your dad was a cheat, he had no power, nothing!
class rep: No.. you’re dead … go… go…Don’t talk to me..
Lanre: Who are you talking to?
class rep: So if it’s not my father’s gods, what killed the others? Before I killed you myself.
Halimat: (smiling) i’ll be waiting for you here. I just made you confess to killing me.
On the other side, all the rest saw was the class rep running around and Lanre standing still, they heard nothing. Mary looked up and saw the shadow going to them, she called out
Mary: Lanre! Get out of there! It’s coming!!!
Lanre looked up and saw the Shadows, he quickly grabbed the rope and started off.
The class rep saw the Shadows too. He fell, by the time he got up, Lanre was in the middle but he couldn’t wait, he jumped on the rope and went after Lanre. The weight swung the ropes around, almost throwing them both off.
Mary screamed as the lower rope broke , sending Lanre some distance down but he held the upper rope tight.
The class rep did the same. The rope on the other side broke so the rest of the guys held tight at the other end pulling Lanre and Class rep up.
Lanre was faster, he got up quick and was pulled in by Uche.
Class rep was still down, the others kept pulling him up. He was almost at the top when Lanre spoke.
Lanre: Guys…..(breathing hard)….. He.. he killed her… This bastard killed Halimat.
They looked at him and then back to the Class rep who was stretching his hands for someone to grab him. His eyes widened when no one moved.
Class rep: Guys…i know she’s your friend, let’s talk about this…. I’m sure we can find a way to solve this….
Moji; (Crying ) No we can’t! You can go and solve it with her there.
In an instant, they all let the rope go, sending the class rep down the hill.
No one moved, except Emma who found a torch and flashed it down the hill.
Emma: Kai….. Bastard got a soft skull too… his head so so “Watermelonic” down there.
We are closer to daybreak now more than ever, get up guys, Let’s get out of here.

Shadows (episode twelve)
********Flashback********
Friday, 13th. 8:30am
(Phone call)
Class rep: Hello sir!
Man: …..(coughs)…. Hello, how are you?
Class rep: I’m fine sir! I just want to tell you that we are about leaving sir.
Man: (coughs…. ) Oh…. That is…..(coughs)…. that is good! Is everything thing going accor…..(coughs)….;according to plan?
Class rep: yes sir.
Man: (cough) you can see I’m sick….(coughs )… this sacrifice must be made….(coughs)
Class rep: Ah don’t worry sir. I understand what must be done and i won’t disappoint you sir.
Man: I hate it had to be… (coughs)….(coughs) ….to be….(coughs)….this way but…(coughs )….but…
Class rep: You should rest now ok? You won’t die now, i don’t care what has to be lost so i would save your life.
Man:. Thank you my boy.
Class rep: Ok. Goodbye…….. Dad!

They had been searching for a while before Lanre stumbled on Halimat’s lifeless body on the ground. He stood there for a while in shock before calling the others. Mary and Moji busted out in tears as they all stood watching the corpse.
They were tired already, all hope of getting out alive was lost.
Emma: I can’t believe I’ll die when I’m just 21 years. Plus this isn’t how i think I’ll go. I thought I’d be surrounded by my grandchildren and my children on a sick bed while i tell them beautiful stories about how i became the world’s richest man at age 30 (Smile)
Daniel: I thought I’ll be lying on my bed after making love to a sexy lady and I’ll just go like that…
Emma: Seriously? That’s how you wanna go? Dying after sex.
Daniel: Yea….or during sex for that matter so I’ll go happily.
Moji: …..and go straight to hell…
Daniel: You know i heard this thing about hell fire, that you’ll continue to do in hell the particular sin that brought you there in the first place….. so if you were a liar, you’ll be lying in hell, so i thought maybe if i die making love…. I’ll probably be hooking up with evil spirits in hell.

Lanre: Guys…. we should be moving.
Emma: Moving where?? All we’ve done all night is try to get out of this place and somehow death kept taking us one after the other. We can as well stay in a spot till daybreak or till whatever is killing us comes for us.
Lanre: But….
Daniel: (cuts in) No buts Lanre! We’re staying here, no one is moving anywhere with you no more.
Lanre sighed. He understood their fears and worries. The closer the morning comes, the more dangerous things become. Maybe Emma was right, maybe they just have to stay in a spot and wait until whatever is going to happen, happens.
There they sat in the bush, surrounded by trees as Halimat’s body laid there.
They heard footsteps from behind them, it was firm, loud and very closeby.
Though they had all agreed to stay and wait till whatever was coming to come, they still found themselves scampering off on there feet, looking around in all direction, holding their breaths and waiting anxiously.
Emma began rolling his trousers and folding his sleeves as if preparing to run…
Lanre: (to Emma) I thought we are to wait and prepare for anything and not run?
Emma: I didn’t mean that… you really believed I’ll wait around? Bro, if anything comes out of that bush, it’s today you’ll find out i can run faster than Usain Bolt.
The footsteps continued and getting closer with each step, the girls stayed behind the guys, except Emma who was hiding behind Moji.
The image finally emerged from the bush, it took a few seconds before they all gave a sigh of relief while breathing hard.
Lanre: It’s you! Where have you been man?
Class rep: I’m sorry i startled you guys.
Emma: Answer the question! Where have you been?
Class rep: Finding my way out of this place of course, like i believe you guys are doing too. .. and i have found the way out
Temmy: Are you serious?
Class rep: Indeed i am. I have found the way out.
Lanre: So if you found the way out, why are you still here?
Class rep: I couldn’t just leave. I brought you all here, i have to get you out. That’s why i came back.
Emma: I know you! You’re not the guy that think about others.
Class rep: Guys! People have died. (Crying ) how do you think i feel about that, knowing it was my idea to come here. You don’t trust me but I’m sure you guys wanna get out of here as much as i want to.
Daniel: I think we should go with him
Temmy: Me too!
Emma: Of course, Temmy, You too. We all know you’ll agree to whatever Daniel agrees to. And you Class rep, how come you are still alive?
Class rep: i have been attacked several times by that thing but i got lucky.
Emma: Got lucky? Timothy, Habeeb, Shade, John and Halimat… how come they weren’t as lucky as you are?
Class rep: Will you guys stop listening to Emma and let’s go.
Emma: Guys, none of you know this guys has much as i do. There is no way he’ll find a way out and then come back for us.
Lanre: I understand your fear Emma. You’re very reasonable but what other choice do we have?
Emma: We can stay here.
Mary: so that when something happens you can run off like Usain Bolt?
Emma: Looks like it’s me against you all. Class rep, if anything happens to my friends, you might get lucky from the shadow but not from me because i will kill you myself. Lead the way…..
Class rep: Good. Glad you made the right choice.
Lanre: You heard him… please lead the way.
Class rep turned and began walking away as they trooped behind him. He looked to his side and saw Halimat’s body the ground, he kept walking, smiling to himself.

Class rep.
He had always wondered why people could believe in so-called saviour , Jesus! How could they worship a man?
And if that wasn’t enough, another group always bow their heads to the ground, praying until it leaves a black spot on their forehead.
The only god he had known all his life was his village god, to which his dad was the high priest that communicates with it . Now that his father is sick, a sacrifice needs to be made so the high priest won’t die.
Kill a number of young people to lengthen his father’s life. Make him live longer by killing other people.
He planned everything well, he is going to organise a camp trip , lie to everyone the school authority knew about it, get them inside the bush and find a way to get out and leave them there all before 12:00am.
He had almost attacked Emma before running off into the bush.
He alone understood what was going on but it wasn’t supposed to happen this way. It happened way too earlier than it should have.
He made plans to sneak away while everybody slept before 12:00am but those stupid idiots John and Shade had wandered off into the bush and causing the deaths to start earlier than planned.
Now like the rest of them he’s been stuck in the bush with them all, facing the same danger.
The wind blew as he saw the shadow above him and getting closer.
Class rep: Please please! Dont’t hurt me! I’m with you! I will help you get them all! I’ll kill them for you if that’s what i have to do so i can get out alive… Please don’t hurt me ….
That worked! The shadow retreated and left him. He was scared to the bones but he had made a promise and he must keep it.
He became busy all night, Leading most members of the class to the spot where he had first encountered the Shadow and finding a way to leave them there.
He never really wait to see what became of them except that he always heard their screams few minutes after leaving them there.
Halimat was too much of a religious person, somehow the Shadow couldn’t get to her and that’s why he had to kill her himself.
He returned to get Her body only to find the others there. Apparently, the only group that were still alive.
This was going to be his last trip. All that is left to do is get the remaining ones to the spot and he would have fulfilled his promise and then be free to leave.
There they were filing behind him like sheeps after the shepherd. Some of them were even excited they found a way out. He smiled…. assuming they knew…. if only they knew he was leading them all to their deaths….. he smiled again.

10:47am Thursday, 12th, 2015
Helen: So tell me Mary, have you been able to convince your broke boyfriend to go to camp with us?
Mary: Excuse me…..! Don’t call me boyfriend broke, okay?
Helen: Haha! Is he not broke? I wonder what you find in that guy.
Halimat: Well…. he’s good looking
Helen: Na fine boy we wan chop? Ordinarily to make new hairdo, he couldn’t give you money for that.
Mary: Why should he? I still have a father remember? I don’t think i need a guy to take care of me when i still have parents.
Helen: Really? Does your father sleep with you? Any Man that wants to sleep you has to take responsibilities.
Halimat: Kai! Is everything about sex to you?
Helen: Don’t start with your islamic preaching abeg! Anyways…. everything is about sex to me, that’s the reason I’m going to the camp to begin with.

Lanre: (Sighs) Let’s move guys. The hunter made a moved towards this direction (points to the east) before he started coughing. I think it should lead us out of this horrible place.
Daniel: Good idea! I can’t stand here near a dead body and watch two girls argue with eachother. Can we move already?
They began walking in the eastern direction. They were all trying hard not to look at the dead body on the ground. No one said a word.
When they were out of sight and far away from the body. Someone came out of the bush close to the corpse on the ground, covering it with a white cloth and dragging it away.

3:05am ….
They’ve walked for five minutes and had not said a word to one another. All of a sudden, Emma started giggling to himself. At first, no one seemed to care what he was up to. But when his laughter became louder, they stopped to look at him….
Daniel: I think he has finally lost his mind.
Uche: Can you blame the guy? What we have all seen can drive someone nuts.
Emma: Hahahahaha….. Guys…. what if this all whole thing was just a dream? What if some idiot among us ate too much, falls asleep and is dreaming all these? And when the idiot wakes up, everything will get back to normal.
Temmy: I wish that is true. Maybe we’ll all wake up and discover all these were nothing but a nightmares
Uche: Do i need to punch you guys again to remind you all that this is real?
Moji: Uche! How come you’re the only one so sure this isn’t a dream?
Temmy: I wonder o!
Moji: You were also very quick to tell Daniel we’re not high on any drugs. Tell me, do you have something to do with all these?
Uche: What? Are you kidding me right now?
Daniel: Just answer the question man!
Uche: Damn! So now I’m being suspected of having something to do with this because I’m the only one reasonable enough to be in tune with reality?
Moji: It’s more like you’re so certain of this
Uche: And that’s why you think i have something to do with it? Why can’t you ask Emma? At least, he is the one that was shouting “We’re all going to die on this trip” right from the start.

Lanre: Guy……Guys….Wait!

Lanre: Where is Halimat?
Everyone looked around, Halimat was nowhere to be found.

She had snuck away from the group while they were talking to that hunter guy. She still blame herself for Timothy, so going back to the cabin might be a good idea.
What if Timothy is still alive, they should have waited, they could have but the others ran off leaving one of them behind.
How can Allah forgive her for what she did? She opened the cabin door and now one of them was taking by the shadow. She has to go back.
Halimat traced her way back to the cabin, though the ground was unusually dry, it just rained for crying out! “Allah is great ” she thought to herself.
Halimat heard a crack behind her, looks like someone had stepped on a stick that broke, she looked back but saw no one. She could feel the hair on her hands rose. She gave a deep sigh and started walking faster than before. The footsteps behind her got faster too.
She didn’t look back, she kept going, saying a short prayer in her mind.
By the time she got to the spot where the cabin was, all she saw was a tree
She walked around the tree in amazement, totally bewildered by what she was seeing. So the cabin wasn’t even real to begin with.
There was nothing left to do than run back to the group. She turned around and started walking back.
She heard the footsteps behind her again, this time, it was even closer to her than before.

Uche: i still don’t understand why we have to go back and look for that religious fanatic of a girl.
Lanre: I’ve explained things to you man! We can’t just leave anyone behind. She’s one of us too.
Moji: She blames herself for what happened.
Uche: Good, she should! Because of her stupidity and stubborness, we lost my good friend
Emma: Look Uche! We all voted to come back and get her, if you don’t want to come with us, you can stay here.
That calmed Uche down a bit.
Lanre said a little prayer in his mind, knowing their chances of getting out alive gets slimmer as the day breaks. He looked over at Mary, he knew he must protect her with all he has, even if that meant losing his own life.

The footsteps behind had stopped for a while now but somehow it felt someone was watching. She walked real fast, faster than she had ever walked all her life.
Suddenly, it came again! The movements behind her and so she started running, hitting her legs on stones anf sands in the process but that didn’t matter.
This has gone beyond suspicion, someone was really behind her, chasing her and catching up on her.
The person ran into a tree she had barely dodged. She heard the thud as the person fell to the ground but before she could catch her breath, the person must have got up almost immediately because he/she was chasing her again.
She looked up and saw them, Lanre and the rest of the group, a few distance from where she was. She saw the torch Lanre was holding, the only source of light they had. She must have went off the path while she was running, that’s why instead of running into them, she was adjacent where they were.
There was only one thing left to do, she has to call out for help. She had gain a few distance when the person that was chasing her fell to the ground but now she felt it’s presence closer to her than ever.
She opened her mouth to shout but the hands grapped her, spinning her off to the ground in a thud.
But she wouldn’t give up easily , she started crawling away. when she caught her breath, she tried calling again.
Halimat: Hhhheeel……
Her attempt at shouting was cut short though, as the hands grabbed her again and covering her mouth and nose.
She twisted real hard but her strenght was no match for the person. she spun around and caught a glimpse of her attacker.
Her eyes widened as she recognized who it was but it was too late for her as the knife pierced deep below her navel sending shock waves all round her body . Her hands felt cold and her face became pale as her breathing got real slow.
The last thing she saw was the ray of light coming from Lanre’s torch just tens of feet away….. she took her last breath.
