The oil control ring assembly scrapes excess oil from the cylinder walls ahead of the compression rings to prevent the oil from entering the combustion chamber. However, if the rings are properly sized and fixed or installed during the time of coupling the engine, any failure in the rings are most likely caused by another mechanical problem. When an engine becomes overheated, the piston will expand, thereby reducing the piston to cylinder clearance. This reduction can cause a metal to transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall, which is known as Galling. At this juncture, the transferred aluminum can be build up on the cylinder wall and cause the top compression rings to leak or break. Partially burned fuel blows by the rings, and the sulfur in the fuel mixes with water traces in the oil, and combines to form sulfuric acid, which will damage the internal components of the engine. Once your car is running again, disconnect the cable, and then let your engine run for 20 minutes or more so that your alternator can charge up your battery again.

Wait another minute and start it another time or two to make sure that you won’t be stranded at the gas station or wherever you go next.

Worn engine valves. Also known as tappets, the engine valve lifters can require adjustment or may have wear on them, causing a space between the lifter and the valve. Hence, the tapping noise when they touch.
Most, if not all, of the causes of engine rattling require extensive repairs. Without prompt attention, you could find yourself doubling up on repair costs or in need of engine replacement instead.

Engine Leaking Oil

At every joint in the engine, there’s a gasket or seal. It serves two purposes: keep engine fluids inside and contaminants outside. The problem is, gaskets aren’t always perfect.

Gaskets can be made of a host of different materials. They could be thin layers of metal like many types of cylinder head gaskets. They could be cork, like old-school valve cover gaskets.

Any gasket can damage and fail. For some, like an oil pan gasket, it’s usually just a matter of time before it seeps or leaks. Others, like the front or rear crankshaft oil seal, wear over time because a rotating part is moving inside the seal. Rubber seals and silicone can deteriorate with time and exposure, and just crack.

No matter what type of seal or how it happens, a leak starts to form. It may be slow at first with an occasional drip from the undercarriage. Or it might be a sudden burst that dumps a huge puddle of oil underneath your car. Whether an oil leak or car leaking water, it needs to be fixed.

An oil leak can sometimes be a very minor issue or major or an extremely involved engine repair. The longer it’s left unattended, the more damage can result. If your engine runs out of oil, you could develop that dreaded engine knock or even a blown engine, and need a whole engine replacement.

Brake System
The brake system is composed of the disk brakes in the front end and/or rear of the vehicle that connects to a system of tubes and hoses. This system works through the master cylinder as the driver steps on the brake pedal that pushes a plunger against it. The action forces hydraulic oil (or brake fluid) through the tubes and hoses into the braking unit at each wheel. The brake fluid forces the caliper inside the master cylinder to press against the piston. The two brake pads squeeze on the rotor attached to the wheel to slow down or make a complete stop. The parking brakes, power brake booster and anti-lock system are also connected with the brake system.

1. Catalytic Converter Light would be on (Dashboard)
If your vehicle’s catalytic converter is bad, the “Check Engine Light” will illuminate on the dashboard. When there is a presence of an extra rich fuel mixture, raw fuel enters the catalytic converter and is ignited. The catalyst components can melt under such conditions.
3. Reduced Performance
If exhaust becomes trapped in front of the catalytic converter, there will be a latent reduction in performance. This is created by back pressure, which affects the running of your engine and stops it from breathing. The sudden increase in back pressure can cause your engine to stall during your drive. It will act as though there is an air lock in your system, making the car jerk or feel like there is no fuel reaching the engine when you push the accelerator.

4. Low Fuel Economy
A failing converter can cause a noticeable decrease in your fuel economy, which will cost you significantly over a very short period of time.
5. Low Performance of the Exhaust System
The cause of a failing catalytic converter can sometimes be traced back to an error in the fuel system. A distinctive sign of this is a restriction in the performance of the exhaust system, indicative of the melting of catalyst materials inside.

Also, air contains a lot of nitrogen in addition to oxygen, and in the heat and pressure encountered inside the cylinder some of this nitrogen will form molecules together with oxygen, rather than stay separate gases, so you get vile things such as NO and NO2 (commonly grouped as NOx, and components of so-called smog and acid rain). The catalytic converter tries to split these back up to their component gases, becoming harmless N2 and O2 (with the O2 then being used to help the CO and hydrocarbons mentioned in the previous paragraph complete their reaction into CO2). Have you found yourself in a situation where your car can not start, and you do not know the cause of it? Here are the first things you need to do so as to know the cause of the problem while the car could not start. Before testing the fuel pump, go over this checklist. This includes some obvious items and often forgotten common maintenance issues that may turn into a false "bad fuel pump" diagnostic.
1. Check if there is enough fuel in the tank. If the engine cranks but refuses to start, make sure that you actually having enough fuel in the tank.

2. Listen for fuel pump noise. Usually, you can do this test yourself from inside the vehicle. By turning the ignition ON, you should hear the fuel pump come alive with a swishing sound for about 2 seconds. If you can't hear the pump working, enlist the help of an assistant and follow carefully the next steps:
• Remove the fuel filler cap.
• Put your ear close to the fuel filler opening.
• Ask an assistant to turn the ignition key to the ON position, but don't start the engine.
• You should hear a whirring sound coming from inside the fuel tank for about two seconds. That's the sound of the fuel pump being energized. That means the pump is receiving power and it's responding.
• If you don't hear this sound but the engine cranks when you try to start it, you may have a problem in the fuel pump electrical circuit. Check the fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relay, and, if necessary, the wiring and other related sensors that the engine control module (ECM-car computer) relies on to activate the fuel pump, like the camshaft position sensor.
• Check the car computer for any stored diagnostic trouble codes in the computer that may point in the direction of the problem. If the car moves, you can go to a local auto parts store that can pull the diagnostic trouble code for you.
• If you think there's a problem in the electrical circuit and the fuel pump fuse is okay, try switching the fuel pump relay with another similar relay in your car and try starting the engine.
• On some vehicle models, insufficient engine oil pressure will keep the engine from starting to prevent engine damage. In this case you need to check for the level of the engine oil. This could be done manually of car.
