toluxa1: So i installed my Starlink today. It was an herculean task. I had to employ the service of a roofer and rented Scaffold to climb the roof. He installed at the center of my flat roof and then bore a hole into my POP and passer the cable straight into our Master room. It's a mess but I'll have it maintained. Setting up was quick and then I did a speed test. I was getting between 18 - 25 mbps. Though I saw a message saying it's gathering data on obstruction (I have zero obstructions by the way) and will caliberate and speed might be better in 6 hours.
Later I went into the advanced speed test and got the below result. So now I'm confused with the 3 test results. Direct test is 18 - 25mbps WiFi Speed (Device to WiFi Router) is about 45mbps Starlink Speed (Router to internet) is 200mbps
What's preventing me from accessing the Starlink speed on my device? You can let it gather the data then see if there are obstructions. As long as it's mounted correctly, it should be good. |

Miyachi: Starlink has a fair usage policy i.e it is capped. Imho, you're better off going fiber, it'll still be cheaper, faster and a better investment than Starlink. I've gotten speeds close to 1 gigabyte per sec. over 10GbE running on fiber. Or better yet, you can hack the various offers MTN and co. are giving with the purchase of their routers - you can get up to 3Tb on MTN for just 150k.
Starlink will only make sense for me if I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere with no cell coverage and even then I'm sure I'll have bigger problems than internet. It's not capped the moment. See - https://www.starlink.com/legal/documents/DOC-1204-26564-66Also, fiber ain't everywhere. Very limited. With Starlink you don't need to worry about your location. |

dustmalik: Use Speedtest.net app by Ookla, see if the result is any different. Also, check for obstruction, I suspect there's a lot of obstruction where your dish is placed.
Lastly, split the 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels, and use the faster 5ghz Yup, most likely didn't position it well. Would be nice to see screenshots of the visibility data |
Phones › Re: This Starlink Is Expensive To Maintain by Avatar(m): 4:11pm On Feb 16, 2023 |
thebosstrevor1: The average Nigerian can't afford Starlink, Just stick to your MTN, GLO, or whatever you have
The cost of buying the equipment is $600 and $60 for delivery. you have to source dollars and use your dollar card to pay.
Few things you need to know:
1. The router is just like an access point, you can only connect to it wirelessly not through wire.
2. The standard cable that connects the Starlink device (dish) which is placed outside to the router inside is 75 feet.
So, you will also have to order Starlink Ethernet Adapter to connect it through the wire and also order a 150ft cable if the place you are setting the dish is above 75f btw, Starlink ethernet adapter is $25., and a 150ft replacement cable is about $32
monthly subscription for starlinks RESIDENTIAL plan is $43 which is about 31949 naira monthly
So literally I have to source dollars every month on the black market to subscribe to Starlink. Imagine if the dollar goes up, that means i have to pay more to sub. Also it is not unlimited internet, it is capped at 1TB
if you are on the residential plan, you can never pause payment. Starlink will always charge your dollar card every month whether you use it or not, the only way to stop them from charging is if you cancel their service Not sure if location applies here, but i didn't pay for delivery. Total cost to get here was about $588 {including shipping}. Starlink isn't for everyone. Never was. it has always been pricey. I feel people need to look into this first and see if it's something they can afford, if not, just ignore it and use any ISP of choice. For me, i don't mind paying for this. We're talking of fast and stable internet here with no Geographic barrier. I pay about 47k for an internet service @40mbps. It's very unstable and it ruins my calls when working. So this is like heaven for me, as it costs less {monthly subscription wise}. Summary ~ if you can't afford it, just don't bother buying, no point at all. It's not for everybody. |

seankafor: bro, can you use power bank to power the router in case of power failure?
Does it have inbuilt battery? No. it doesn't. I use a portable power bank to run mine when there's no light. |

passendi: Who is using starlink currently Been using mine close to a week now. It's very good. As a tip, if you are about purchasing this, download the Starlink App and scan your location for obstructions. If you have lots of it, you probably want to erect this somewhere in your home {Facing North}. I was able to use an App called Gotok. Very smooth for funding
