Politics / Re: The TSA: How Buhari Nuked The Nigerian Economy by Avelo: 1:22pm On Aug 03, 2016
N
plaetton:
My friend Wirinet and LFJ, you guys are hung up on the technical arguments for the TSA.

Let me repeat, a government having a single Treasury account or whatever you want to call it is , and will always be a prudent idea.
I am not arguing for the pros and cons of having one.

I am arguing against the folly of draining the oil from an economic engine without any impact assessment or completely ignoring one.

Even while trying to build a solid structure or dismantling a redundant structure, good leadership demands an environmental impact assessment.
The imaginary or envisaged benefits has to balance or outweigh the disruptive and destructive potential to the immediate environment.

In this regard, the TSA implementation was a nuclear bomb to the banking and financial environment.
Those that initiated it , but later put it on hold were the wiser.

Again, as a rebuttal to your arguments, the US in 2008, could have, according to the dictates of the free market system and the Constitution, allowed the banks to fail and have a complete reset of the economic system, .but they prevailled to save the system because of the cascading catastrophic implosions that would have ensued.

There could have been a hundred ways of implementing the TSA, or it's intended goals, without having to nuke the entire system of which our economy rests.

The way the TSA was implemented says much about the the problem of leadership in Nigeria,..where state policies tend to be punitive rather ameliorative.

On this you are probably right. I identified liquidity crunch for the bankers as collateral of this TSA implementation but I felt the banks will get creative and actually strive to conduct there primary business which is to lend to businesses. But alas it didnt work out that way as the lending situation is now worse and credit is even worse, this in an economy that needs reflating.
So in that sense maybe the govt should ve considered a phased implementation, rather than full implementation. This might have given time for the sector to absorb and strategise for the shock.

Igboid:
Ndiigbo can be accused of having a pathological thirst for acquiring lands in any foreign land we find ourselves in, but what you can never accuse the Igbo of, is forcefully taking lands not his from indigenous people.

The Igbo man knows the value of land more than any other Nigerian group, but his culture is not built on expansionism, so he makes the most fair offers for lands and landed property, so good an offer that the owners will never reject. As a matter of fact, as individuals, no one will make a better offer for your land than the Igbo man, he is often the first person sought out for, when indigenous people want to sell. their lands.

Below is the Oba Akenzua Igbophobic summation on the Igbo man in 1965, the important point of this his rambling that I want to highlight, is that part he admitted that the Igbo man would always make you an offer for your property, he takes none of them by force.

"The Igbo philosophy seems to be “money maketh a man” and the Igbo man is prepared to sink to any level or scale the
highest mountain to get money…No job is too menial for the Igbo man
...I think there are two main reasons why “the Igbo are everywhere.”
First, as I have stated, the Igbos will go to any length in search of money and since they are more willing than any other
tribe to do any type of work, no matter how menial, they are ready and cheap source of labour everywhere.
Another reason for their migration… is terribly overpopulated by its 12 million or so inhabitants, so that the Igbo is
constantly on the move in serch of a place to stand in.
While I admire the Igbos for their energy and industry, their insatiable desire for money makes me sick.
…I have stated elsewhere in this narrative that the Igbo does not believe that any kindness can be gratuitous and would
doubt your sincerity if you were prepared to do any favour for him without demanding or accepting a consideration.
As a matter of fact the Igbo man makes the offer before he begins to ask for the help he seeks. This remarks should,
however, not be taken to mean that there are no honest people among them.
There certainly are, but by and large, the average Igbo man seeks gain from whatever he does.
…One common charge against the Igbo is that if you give them an inch they will demand (and quite often take) a mile.
An Igbo man in search of residential accommodation is prepared to pay rent for even your kitchen store. Within a week of
his moving in, about half a dozen “brothers” come to “visit” him; within a fortnight more of them arrive. He then pleads
with you to allow them temporary accommodation in the house but soon they have become permanent and taken every
available space in your house.
There would be nothing wrong with this if they remained as tenant. But the sad part of it is that before the owner knows
what is happening these tenants are dangling money before his eyes for the purchase of the house itself or the adjoining
land.
The money comes to hand quite easily either through concerted efforts or some wealthy “brothers” or the tribal union,
and overnight the owner of the house becomes a tenant on his own land.
In like manner, they have surreptitiously ousted “nationals” of the other regions from their market stalls, from their
shops, from the rubber plantations and other forms of human endeavour. One may say, it is the stupidity of the other
people.
Is it any wonder then that some other regions in the federation entertain fear of possible Igbo domination?
IT IS TO BE HOPED THAT THEY DO NOT BECOME LIKE THE JEWS , objects of castigation and contempt for their industry
and adventurous spirit".

Oba Akenzua, 1965.

Chaii Igbo amaka. A people steeped in hard work and industry even from adam. All akenzhuas submissions point to a hardy, thrifty and above all very capitalistic people. I love the part about not wanting anu favours from anybody. The Igbo is willing to work his way to the top, the very reason they were top dogs in pre colonial times when fairness and equity reigned supreme IGBO KWENU!!!. Igboid more submissions please

13. “The question of land was repeatedly raised, it being resented by the Efiks and Ibibios that the Ibos should acquire land at all in their territory while the methods by which it was obtained were also questioned. There is no doubt that on the Ibo Plateau there is insufficient land for the people and the Ibos ate thrusting outwards where possible they acquire land and use it either for cultivation or building…..This is a matter which will require legislation sooner or later and it will be delicate to handle, but the economic process is in itself healthy and we had little sympathy with a witness who remarked that there is much undeveloped land in district and he was anxious that it should not fall into the hand of the Ibos….We believe that Governments in Nigeria should be careful not to try to protect minorities by introducing measures that would restrict development.”
14. “A group of miscellaneous grievances and charges against the Ibos from Calabar may be treated together; we were told that the Ibos did not observe local customs in the markets….We formed the impression that jealousy of the Ibos successes in the markets was the main factor.”

Take a good look at the last sentence of this particular report.
The igbo man is indeed fair minded, just deeply misunderstood perhaps due to our boisterous nature. By the way igboid are u pazienza

In the real sense of it, there has been YouWiN! 3 editions so far. The first and second editions have been paid while the third edition are still left to be paid in full.
Foolish zombies will come to argue here that youwin awardees have been paid, while we ve not seen a dime. Can u imagine the propaganda flooding the news all over net while refusing to pay. Anywsy propaganda can only take you so far and awardees response is also going to be loud and clear nonsensee.

You and the OP are so right. Teaching wont do anything long term for young graduate. Empowerment for me simply means training job ready skills and entrepreneurship for those who have the talent. The most worrisome is the creation of entitlement programmes like 5k for the poor. Its a slippery slope, soon other parties will be competing to out do APC then like joke entitlement program will consume the whole budget. Not to talk of the laziness welfare programs enthrone on the recepients.

Your problem is that you don't seem to realise that we are not in the dark ages any more. This 21st century. It is the age of self determination and awareness. It is not your business what people in the Niger-Delta do with their resources. It is not for you to question what they have done with their Oil money. It is their land and Oil, it was their land and Oil long before Lugard came to create Nigeria. And you are asking what they are fighting for when their resources have been stolen in the name of 'one Nigeria'? You cant go to another man's house, take what belongs to them and when they protest, you ask 'what are they fighting for?'. That's an insult.

As for Nnamdi Kanu, he is right in what is he doing. A person has a right to fight for their freedom. Even Mandela requested for guns to fight white minority rule in his own homeland and was jailed for it. Remember, the Nigeria you are talking about is just the artificial creation of the White man and an instrument of bondage.Igbos did not become part of Nigeria willingly, infact we fought the British not to be part of Nigeria. We later again fought Nigeria not to be part of Nigeria. In 2014, the same Britain that created Nigeria granted Scotland a referendum. Britain did not say "we must be one Britain!" Or call the Scots rebels. So as long as Nigeria refuses to listen to the request of the indigenous people of the land such as Igbos who were forced into the British contraption called Nigeria against their will to granted their freedom, you always have people like Kanu requesting for guns to fight for freedom. The time has come for everyone to decide who they are through a referendum.
. You should also add that scots had members in the british parliament while fighting for there independence, infact the prime mimister when the date of the referendum was agreed Gordon Brown is a scotsman

I am sorry to tell you that Youwin actually failed because it's a grant and there is no accountability. Some Youwin winners actually used the money for things not intended for so that kind of programme can not be continued. I agree with you that Youwin is a good programme and its a plus to GEJ but lets not forget that this is Nigeria. People take advantage of loopholes here and it's the responsibility of the government to minimize such. YES will be better because it is a loan programme that will be paid back. Beneficiaries will have no choice than to use the money judiciously.
Kind regards.
. To say youwin failed and lacks accountability is the biggest lie. Stick to what you know, am an awardee and with a printing press in onitsha with more than 10 regular employees not to talk of adhoc staff. All this wont have been possible without Youwin. I know several other awardees doing even better. saying it lacks accountability do u even know the milestones u have to meet before u can assess the fund or u think once u re a named a winner u recive the said money. Please criticise and stick with what you know.

Nice write dearpreye, i am your fan!
My 2cents

we all keep talking about diversification of the economy, that's pretty cool, but we shouldn't forget that diversification would definately take time to yield result.nigeria economic outlook at the moment is gloomy and we apparently don't have time!

What i think the government should embark on

1.rapid development of our infrastructure, especially power which is pivotal to the development of any nation.nigeria should tap into wind and solar energy,we shouldn't be depending on hydro alone..in saner climes like south africa and taznzania, solar and wind adds thousands of mega watts to thier grids, its cheap and faster

2.Development of SME's is also a contributory factor to the development of any nation,we have an active youth population pegged at over 60million,yet our unemployment rate is growing spirally and exponentially, government should grant soft loans with little or no interest to boost small and medium scale enterprises, this will as well generate thousands of jobs that can get access to the loans, government can prompt beneficiaries of the loan to pay tax if they so please, but make it minimal!

3.Efficiency in our tax system...tho' you might want to disagree with me,but nigeria is one of the less tax countries in the world...britain majorly depends on their tax systems and its working for them, nigeria can key into it,is one of the proponents of income generation of any nation...naija should key into it too.

They are other measures the nigeria n government can take to cushion the effects of global economic downturn, but the aforemention would help on the long run!
. Nice submissions you made up there. Sometimes the problem is politics, otherwise why is this governmeny frustrating a proven sme and job creating program like youwin, instead of fast tracking and expanding it. Sometimes am baffled by those that govern this country. Go through that budget and you wont find a single youth empowerment program, but 500 billion is earmarked to be handed out to the as 5k stipends to youths pray tell me wetin that one go achieve

OBJ made a very good point, NOI has her weaknesses and she needs a very focused and discipline boss to cover up those flaws. Are you aware that in every area where NOI failed under GEJ, it was the exact opposite when she worked under OBJ?

All the achievements which gave NOI her fame was achieved when she worked under OBJ, from digging Nigeria out of the mud and placing her on the world economic map, clearing off debts in billions of dollars, increasing the nation's savings/reserves by over 1000% at a time when oil prices were lower, pushing Nigeria's GDP growth rate from 2% to a record 6-7%, creating a robust middle class etc. It's obvious she's good at what she does but she needs to be managed by someone strong, obviously not a GEJ, cos she apparently reversed all her achievements when she worked with GEJ. All these achievements you quoted require political clout or cover to achieve. Her brief is to present these ideas to the president and it is for the president to expend political capital to see the ideas to fruition. That jona no do am doesnt in anyway reflect badly on ngozi.

Cos we know the total budget for the programme is about 15 billion and over half of the money is provided by world bank and DFID. So I dont understand there beef with this scheme. You know, when I told a friend and fellow YOUWIN 3 awardee a few hours ago that I was trying to drum up support from Nairaland for our proposed march to the Villa, he told me I was just wasting my time because the only time the YOUWIN 3 thread on Nairaland comes alive is when a tranche is about to be paid, and the awardees signed up there are more interested in controversy, insulting each other, etc. Now I see he was right! The new coordinator at the YOUWIN secretariat took over in late February and he's still the one there, so the talk about delay in payment because there is a new coordinator is completely false. The YOUWIN secretariat itself does not effect payment to any awardee, all they do is ascertain awardees that are eligible for payment and forward the names and other details to finance and accounts at FMF to effect payment through the CBN. Thirdly, I know several awardees visit both the YOUWIN secretariat and FMF for general inquiries, I've met a few there. But never at anytime has the secretariat invited a few awardees to brief them on the happenings at the secretariat, or what is causing delay in payments. Effecting payments lies strictly with Finance and Accounts at the FMF.
