Agriculture / What Textbooks Don't Tell You About Pig Farming by awosmart: 8:43am On Sep 05, 2016 |
Google has become the sole avenue for people to source for information on any subject. Most of the information on pig production found on Google Search is particularly tailored for temperate region or developed countries. My first area of concern is feed because it accounts for 70% cost of production. Pig farmers in the USA can afford to feed their pigs corn and soyameal feed, such practice in our tropical area will make profit a forbidden reality. Pig feeding in Nigeria is mostly based on alternative feed ingredients like palm kernel cake, maize offal, wheat bran, groundnut cake, blood meal, dried Brewer grains, etc. These aforementioned ingredients are rich in fibre, fibre tend to limit the growth rate of pigs. I have seen pig farmers raising pigs for more than a year and such pigs cannot weigh 50 kg liveweight. What a waste of time and precious income! I believe the desire of every farmer is to rear pigs and make cool profit after six months . There are some feeding techniques to achieve profitable pig production in Nigeria. If that is your dream, we can trend this path together! Housing is compulsory in pig farming as pigs are always kept indoor, most of the pig farms displayed on Internet are very aesthetic, wanting to achieve such height will make us to spend our hard earned income on building. Why should one spend so much on housing if the remaining capital will not be able to sustain animal purchase and feeding? It is therefore not uncommon to see big pig farms being abandoned due extravagant spending on housing. Stand small, grow big, it is only when one is digging grave that one needs to start from the top. We have low cost housing model which will make your pig business a successful reality. Wanting to know more, stay focus on this platform. 1 Like

muyiroro: 10x10 feet is too small for 10 growers to finishers, advise you get something bigger or keep them 5 growers in a pen. Growers are becoming scarce due to premium demand for pork nowadays, advise you buy weaners from reliable source around you. Wish you good success in pig business. Pig business is in no doubt a very lucrative enterprise. It has made many unemployed graduates to become gainful employers of labour. No other livestock business spins money like piggery does. Pig production is sure of giving 100% return on investment ( excluding fixed assets). Several people have seized the opportunity to become millionaires. I know of a pig village where every farmer is millionaires, Some of them have said goodbye to white collar jobs . We are at a time when job downsize is becoming a norm, there is no job security anyway. Why don't you make use of this privilege to invest into pig farming while the offer lasts. Pig farms are usually situated in the extreme parts of the county due to their foul emissions. It is therefore not uncommon to see pig farms in the bush as one travels along the path. Pigs were not usually stolen by the underworld, but with the current premium demand for pork, the story have changed. Most pig farmers now sleep on their farms( alone in the bush) to protect their diamond ( pigs) from thieves. What a pity! Most of the existed farms are now in the middle of the town due to urbanization. The farmers are usually pressurized to relocate their Farms. Double wahala for deadbody! Rehoboth Pig Village, Ogbomoso is a place located in the interior part of orire local government area. It is well surrounded by arable farmers, this makes feed sourcing an easy task. Intending pig farmers can also buy or lease land to grow crops for their pigs. For those who are keen about investing in pig production, but do not have opportunities to manage it, we can support you with our expertise. We have well trained staff who will ensure the success of your business ( in absentia). We are very sure of our competencies and can therefore sign a legal agreement to offer security for your hard earned income. For those interested in securing an acre of land on Rehoboth Pig Village, Ogbomoso, the cost is 350k. The land is five minute drive from Takie, Ogbomoso. |

dejia:I really want to appreciate your efforts toward the inauguration of Pork Producers Association. In fact, its a dream coming to reality. I want you to use this forum to explain to us why the membership annual dues/fees is #100k. Every wise-farmer will want to why he should pay that amount of money to become a member of newly organized association. For instance, I am a registered member of Animal science Association of Nigeria, all i have to pay in a year is below 50k. Why cant we learn from the Poultry Association of Nigeria? Try to know their(PAN) annual dues and review the annual of PPAN in same manner. I also think the association should be decentralized like that of PAN. In my own place (ogbomoso), we already have pig farmers association and by the grace of God we are aiming at being affiliated with PPAN. Once again I salute your wisdom. |

femu: I am very happy to read your feedback. I believe, we are here to educate ourselves. long life pig farmers. The first farm to import PIC pigs to Nigeria is Astron farm Ltd. pure breed of Large white, Landrace,PIC 410(terminal sires) and terminal gilts were imported to Nigeria, Nov.,2013. I worked on the farm as Animal geneticist. JSR pigs( terminal sires) were also imported from SA by IAR and T, Ikenne around that time. I choose to know more about pig industry in Nigeria. Forgive my passion. I appreciate your correction on the misuse of "pure breed ".I should have used "purebrand". Anyway, that is Nigerianism. I salute you sir. 1 Like |

HOW TO ADDRESS THE HIGH FEED COST IN PIG PRODUCTION Pig farmers in Nigeria are currently facing high cost of production due to increase in the price of feed ingredients. Feed accounts for 70% cost of production. The feed must be palatable, well balanced in essential amino acids and energy, fed in adequate measure. In fact, pigs meant for early market must be fed ad-libitum (voluntarily). Finisher Pig eats first for MAINTENANCE and then for weight increment. An average pig eats 210kg of feed to produce 70kg live weight. Is there any hope of profit for pig farmers? Yes, there is. There are ways to combat hike in the feed cost. REDUCE FEED PARTICLE SIZE: Decrease the particle size of pig feed. Pigs are not like ruminants that have microbes to digest their feed, they are monogastric. They do not chew their feed for long and unlike poultry, they do not have gizzard to grind the ingested feed. Grinding their feed into smaller size is advised to create room for proper digestion. This becomes important if you are using maize or whole wheat. USE DRY –WET FEED. This helps to reduce feed wastage, decrease respiratory problem, aids the activity of probiotics & prebiotics in the feed and also initiates enzymatic action. Pig fed on dry-wet feed grows faster than the one on dry feed. FOLLOW THE STANDARD INCLUSION LEVEL OF THE FEEDSTUFFS. For the fact that PKC is cheap and available does not mean you must make your pig feed 100% PKC. As a norm, PKC should not exceed 40% of the feed composition. BDG should be 20% for lactating sow, grower and finisher, 40% for pregnant sow. Never include poultry litter in pregnant sow, it will lead to stillbirth. WATCH OUT FOR NUTRITIVE VALUE IN THE FEED INGREDIENT. Cassava is a good source of energy for pig but it has low protein profile. Using it large in proportion without balancing the protein level of the feed may result in fat animal. TO BE CONTINUED 1 Like |

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PIC PIGS IN NIGERIA. There is only one farm where one can get pure -breed of PIC pig in Nigeria and that is .....FARMS LTD. All who claim to Have PIC Pigs either bought from this farm or imported se men to Nigeria to Upgrade their breed. if you buy from this farm you have to be sure of what you are buying, hence you may mistake slaughter line for parent line. some farmers bought slaughter line of PIC pig and claim to have pure breed of PIC. what they have is meant for pork production and should never be used as breeder. when you are buying, ask question or buy from a reputable farm. |
