Updated 0949 GMT (1649 HKT) September 26, 2015 Nigeria is no longer on the list of polio spreading countries, bringing it a step closer to fully eradicating the paralyzing disease. After concerted efforts and immunization drives, Nigeria has not reported any new cases since July last year, the World Health Organization said Friday. More than 200,000 volunteers spread out in remote areas and braved attacks by militant group Boko Haram to immunize 45 million children under age 5. It paid off. "All laboratory data have confirmed a full 12 months have passed without any new case," the WHO said. If it goes for two more years without new cases, it will be officially declared free of the disease. "Eradicating polio will be one of the greatest achievements in human history, and have a positive impact on global health for generations to come," the WHO said. "Nigeria has brought the world one major step closer to achieving this goal." Pakistan, Afghanistan still endemic Nigeria's milestone leaves Pakistan and Afghanistan as the only two countries on the list of endemic nations, where polio transmission has never been interrupted. Pakistan and Afghanistan also pose an immunization challenge because militant groups routinely attack polio workers and have banned polio immunization in some areas. "The eradication of polio globally now depends primarily on stopping the disease in these countries," the WHO said. Just three years ago, Nigeria accounted for more than half the polio cases worldwide. "Stopping polio in Nigeria has been a clear example that political engagement, strong partnerships and community engagement are the engines that drive the momentum of public health program, enabling them to achieve great things," said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa. The viral disease destroys nerve cells, and can cause lifelong paralysis in children. It is highly infectious and spreads through contaminated food and water. While it is preventable through immunization, there's no cure once it is contracted. http://edition.cnn.com/2015/09/26/africa/nigeria-polio-milestone/ |

Jonathan administration was very bold and brazen in its corruption – El-Rufai More revelations emerged at the weekend why President Muhammadu Buhari appears insistent on bringing to book some actors in the immediate past administration of the President Goodluck Jonathan, who are believed to have corruptly enriched themselves with public funds. Giving insight to the reasons in Lagos, Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State, who was the guest speaker at the 2015 Founder’s Day Lecture of the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA), said stealing of public funds in the Jonathan administration was brazen and with impunity that must not be glossed over. El-Rufai, who spoke on ‘Preparing the Youth for a Democratic Future’ as guest speaker, explained that whereas stealing was done with some measure of discreet in the past administrations before Jonathan’s, it was rather brazen in the last six years. “The Jonathanian administration was very bold and transparent in its corruption,” he said. According to him, “You do not need to look far before you see evidence of corruption. They are everywhere. It was brazen; those who stole public fund in the past, before the Jonathanian era did it with caution. At least, people were conscious of the fact that what they were doing was wrong and tried to hide it. Those who gave contracts were not blatant in their corruption. They knew how to do it in such a way that their 10percent got to them. But in the last six years, it was as if people were saying, ‘what would anybody do?’ They would steal and leave behind everything; they feared nobody. “Whereas it would require investigation to nail some public office holders in other administrations, the Jonathanians were so brazen in their corruption that you do not need any investigation as evidence is all over the place.” The guest speaker emphasised that the current administration was determined to clean the Augean stable, which he noted would not be an easy task. He said the Nigerian citizens needed to exercise a little more patience with the Federal Government, adding that the country would be better for it in the long run. Citing instance of the nature of brazen nature of stealing that thrived in that era, El-Rufai said a road contract that was awarded in his state for which over N500million had been collected and shared was never done. According to him, those behind the alleged fraud never cared what would happen to them as there was clear evidence of their malfeasance. He said cases of that nature are replete all over the country. “Nigerians are very angry because they know what the former administration has done. We’ll get them. It may take some time, but we’ll get them,” he said. Address the topic of the lecture, El-Rufai said that the current administration was determined to bring the needed change which Nigerians voted for in the last election. “The youth of this land voted in 2015 for change of bad governance; we must continue to contend with the threats of anti-democratic elements, the threat of Boko Haram and other crimes that are trying to destroy the country. We must do all we can to protect democracy in our country,” he said. Stressing the importance of freedom in a democracy, El-Rufai said a democratic setting must guarantee such for all citizens. “Why did the Libyans rise against Muammar Gaddafi? It was not because of poverty; they were living fine; they had houses; there was free and quality education; they had basic things of life, but he was killed because they were looking for freedom. Our country has no future without democracy,” he said. The Kaduna State governor pledged that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government would offer the youth quality education, jobs, access to decent health care, security, and would provide re-orientation programmes to enable them appreciate their roles in nation building. http://businessdayonline.com/2015/09/jonathan-administration-was-very-bold-and-brazen-in-its-corruption-el-rufai/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that Nigeria is a secular state, and its citizens are free to hold on any religious belief. The president made the declaration Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria. Buhari, represented by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, acknowledged the fact that the Catholic Bishops Conferences were crucial, and commended the Catholic Church for its humanitarian works in the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the North Eastern part of the country. ”The business of the state is to protect the lives, livelihood and properties of all Nigerians regardless of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation. There shall be no state religion, and all Nigerians are guaranteed freedom of worship,” the president said, saying that his administration was focused on the issues of security, the economy and corruption. According to him, the menace posed by Boko Haram will soon be over, as the Federal Government is winning the war. He advised that the poor and vulnerable in the society should be considered, as they constitute two-thirds of the population, and advocated for substantive investment in education, teachers’ training and entrepreneurial training, calling for the diversification of the economy and investment in infrastructure. In his speech, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike promised to maintain good relations with the Catholic Church, saying that he would support missionary schools and make them regain their lost glory and prestige; “so that they can become centres of educational excellence. “As my government settles fully into the business of governance, we hope to engage the church in all the areas where our unique competence and moral suasion are likely to bring about a faster realization of the common good of the people.” http://businessdayonline.com/2015/09/nigeria-has-no-official-religion/ |

Buhari's recent appointments may have shown some degree of lack of emotional intelligence and sensitivity to the average psyche of the ethnic Nigerian but I strongly doubt he has a Northern Agenda otherwise why would you appoint southerners to the two most strategic positions of any economy ie the oil (NNPC) and tax (FIRS) board. A northern agenda without financial control of oil blocs and tax proceeds is dead on arrival. And by the way the heads of this boards are well known to Tinubu. I'm getting confused if Buhari is even after a Southern Agenda here or maybe there is no agenda at all. Overall I strongly feel Buhari is after a Great Nigerian Agenda. |

Behind a successful/dap man there is surely a beautiful woman. Now I believe this statement. Osho Baba carry go. |

The Oodua People’s Congress said it would pull out its men from guarding all Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines nationwide from Monday evening. Spokesman for Gani Adams Faction of the congress, Mr. Yinka Oguntimehin, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday. Oguntimehin said this became necessary because the corporation had yet to start paying for the work its men are doing. He said the corporati was, as part of the contractual agreement entered into, three months ago, expected to start payment. The spokesman said the OPC personnel had continued to guard the pipelines with the belief that the corporation would pay as promised. “When we were given the contract on March 15, it was agreed that they will release money for the OPC personnel for effective protection of the NNPC pipelines nationwide. “We lost one man last month because of the activities of the vandals here in Lagos, while some of our men were arrested in the course of protecting the pipeline. “We had told them to release some of our money before the new administration took over, but they kept promising us. “Enough is enough, three months have passed since our members started monitoring the pipeline, and we have fulfilled our part of the agreement. “By 10pm today, our personnel will move out of the NNPC pipelines nationwide and this applies to other groups in the country,” he said. The federal government had, in March, awarded a multi-billion Naira contract to the OPC to secure NNPC pipelines in the South-West zone of the country. http://www.punchng.com/news/opc-pulls-out-of-nnpc-pipeline-surveillance/ |
With the election of Bukola Saraki as the Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, all the nation’s six geo-political zones have benefitted from power sharing in the current dispensation. The zones are North West, North East, North Central, South West, South East and South-South. While Mr. Saraki hails from Kwara state in the the North Central zone, Mr. Dogara is from Bauchi State in the North East zone. Both are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress. The newly-elected Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is an indigene of Enugu State in the South East zone though he is a member of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party. The Deputy Speaker of the House, Yusuf Lasun, is from Osun State in the South West. The president, Mohammed Buhari is from Katsina State in the North West zone while his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, hails from Ogun State in the South West zone. The National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun hails from Edo State in the South-South zone. Of the lot, Mr. Ekweremadu appears to be the luckiest. He was not in contention for the position until the last minute when he was drafted into the race by his party to challenge Senator Ali Ndume who was expected to run with Mr. Saraki. The South East zone where the deputy senate president comes from did not produce a single senator on the platform of the APC. All the 15 senate and almost all the 38 House of Representatives seats in the five states in the zone are of the PDP. This left the zone with no hope of producing a top political office holder in the APC administration. Going by the zoning arrangement believed to have been agreed earlier by the party’s leadership, the South East ought to have produced one of the two presiding officers of the National Assembly. But that possibility had been ruled out when the party did not win any seat during the March 28 National Assembly election. In a nation where ethnic consideration is given the prime place in political appointments, without doubt, Mr. Ekweremadu’s election for the third time for that position will particularly give a sense of belonging to the Igbo race known for its complaint of marginalisation. The South West on its part produced the vice president and the deputy speaker. In the last dispensation, the zone had no representative among the top six topmost political positions Although the speakership of the House was zoned to the zone with Mulikat Akande from Oyo State as the PDP’s preferred choice, Aminu Tambuwal from Sokoto State in the North West and Emeka Ihedioha from Imo State in the South East zone rebelled against the party’s zoning arrangement and present themselves as candidates for the positions of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. With the emergence of Mr. Tambuwal as Speaker, North West produced occupants of two of the offices, the other being the vice presidential slot held by Namadi Sambo from Kaduna State. Apart from the zonal balancing, the election of the new presiding officers of the federal parliament also achieved religious equation. While Messrs Buhari, Saraki and Lasun are Muslims, Messrs Osinbajo, Ekweremadu and Dogara are Christians just as Mr. Oyegun. In the previous dispensation (2011-2015), of the four presiding officers of the National Assembly, only Mr. Tambuwal belonged to the Islamic faith. The then Senate President, Messrs. David Mark, his deputy, Ekweremadu and Ihedioha are all Christians. The president at the time, Goodluck Jonathan, is a Christian while Mr. Sambo is a Muslim. Had Messrs Lawan and Gbajabiamila emerged as Senate President and Speaker, the two chambers would have been headed by Muslims. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/184753-saraki-dogaras-election-balances-power-equation-among-nigerias-geo-political-zones.html |
