In late 1888, Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenadid entered into a treaty with the Italians, making his Sultanate of Hobyo an Italian protectorate. His rival Boqor Osman Mahamuud was to sign a similar agreement vis-a-vis his own Majeerteen Sultanate (Majeerteenia) the following year. Both rulers had entered into the protectorate treaties to advance their own expansionist goals, with Sultan Kenadid looking to use Italy's support in his ongoing power struggle with Boqor Osman over the Majeerteen Sultanate, as well as in a separate conflict with the Omani Sultan of Zanzibar over an area to the north of Warsheikh. In signing the agreements, the rulers also hoped to exploit the rival objectives of the European imperial powers so as to more effectively assure the continued independence of their territories.[7] The Italians, for their part, were interested in the largely arid territory mainly because of its ports, the latter of which could grant them access to the strategically important Suez Canal and the Gulf of Aden.[8]




Somalis only used Europeans not the other way around. They signed treaties with them. Somalis are not animals like Bantus who get enslaved in their own country.

2. Turkey is not colonizing Somalia, they have a few hundred construction workers, teachers, doctors, and have built schools, universities, and hospitals. No country can colonize another country. If anyone wanted to Colonize Somalis they would know that many have tried and we still have our culture and religion and language. Plus if you knew anything of History you would know that Turkey (ottoman empire) has been allies with Somalis for over 500 years. It was the Ottomans and Somalis who defeated Ethiopia and Portugal. It was the Ottoman and Somalis who helped Arabs fight off the Portuguese in Kenya.

Italy was only on the coast using ports, they wanted to go to war with Ethiopia and in exchange would give us back Ogadenia. So that is why Somalis allied with Italy, Italy was not in Somalia more than a decade. They were defeated by the British.

It is in every history book that Northern Kenya was part of southern Somalia, it was divided as Southern Somalia was controlled by Italy and northern Kenya was controlled by the british.

The North Eastern Province (Somali: Woqooyi Bari) is one of the former Provinces in Kenya. It has a land area of 127,358.5 km², with its capital at Garissa. Led by the Northern Province People's Progressive Party (NPPPP), Somalis in the NFD vigorously sought union with their kin in the Somali Republic to the north.[7] In response, the Kenyan government enacted a number of repressive measures designed to frustrate their efforts in what came to be known as the Shifta War:[2]


As of 2009, the North Eastern Province has a population of 2,310,757 residents.[10] It is almost entirely inhabited by ethnic Somalis. The main Somali clans in the area are the Ogaden, Gurreh, Murale, Ajuran, Degodia and other Hawiye.[11][3]
