The Zamfara State House of Assembly has endorsed the impeachment of five legislators in the state who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The endorsement was done at the plenary on Wednesday, presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Sunusi Rikiji, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the assembly, Alhaji Salisu Tsafe. Tsafe, while moving the motion, urged the assembly to declare the seats of the defected councillors vacant, based on the resolutions of the local government councils of the defecting councillors. The councillors, who announced their decision in September, are Basiru Mainasara, Tudunwada Ward; and Nasiru Dagaji, Mayana Ward; Musa Muhammad, Nasarawa Ward; Aminu Muhammad, Yashi Ward and Bakwai Tsafe, Tsafe Ward. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Majority Leader of the assembly, in his submission, said the assembly received a letter from the councils of the affected councillors that they had impeached the defectors in a decision forwarded to the assembly. He called on the assembly to declare their offices vacant, considering the reasons contained in the resolutions made available to it. Seconding the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Gummi, said the local government lawmakers were allowed to change the party or resign whenever they wished, according to the local government laws. Speaking on the motion, the Speaker said according to the local government laws of the state, the lawmakers had the right to defect or to resign their appointments. Rikiji further said the assembly had agreed and confirmed the resolutions on the defectors and declared their seats vacant. He therefore, directed the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to stop all their salaries, allowances and other entitlements with immidiate effect. Reacting on the issue, the Chairman of the state Councillors’ Forum and one of the defectors, Alhaji Nasiru Dagaji, dismissed the resolution and described it as unconstitutional. Dagaji said they were still on their positions as councillors because they only defected from APC to PDP, and “we served our letters of decamping to our local government councils.” He, however, said they did not resign their positions as elected councillors and ” we will continue to occupy the positions as stipulated by law”. He further said any move from any quarters to remove them from office would be challenged in a cour http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/zamfara-assembly-confirms-sacking-five-councillors-for-defecting-to-pdp/191999/ |
Associates of All Progressives Congress, APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu are lining up three possible running mates for Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) should the former head of state prevail in the forthcoming presidential nomination convention of the party. The synergy between Team Buhari and the Tinubu camp was formally brought to public light last Wednesday when many of Tinubu’s political associates, including his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu got prominent presence at Buhari’s public declaration for the presidency in Abuja. The three prospective running mates, according to Vanguard sources are Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, a former commissioner in Lagos State, Senator Ajayi Borofice presently representing Ondo North in the Senate and Mr. Wale Edun, a former commissioner in Lagos State. Two other choices in the consideration of Team Buhari, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and another former governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo were said to have been taken off the radar by the Asiwaju forces on account of political differences. The intrigues in the relationship between Dr. Fayemi and Tinubu reached a crescendo last week when Tinubu absented himself from the commissioning of the Ekiti State Government Liaison House in Lagos. On the scheduled day of the commissioning, the APC leader was said to have become invisible, sources close to the development told Vanguard, a fact that seemed to underline the increasing political disconnect between the once close men. The projection of the three men, Borofice, Osinbajo and Edun by the Tinubu camp follows the rejection by the mainstream of the party of a Muslim-Muslim ticket that would have seen a Buhari- Tinubu ticket. Sources say that Tinubu may have lately withdrawn himself to that fact and is now believed to be preparing himself to position his own man to be a possible number two man for the country. The consideration of Osinbajo Vanguard learnt is based on the twin factors of his relatively clean character and respect in the Christian community. Osinbajo, who served as attorney general and commissioner for justice in the Tinubu cabinet has won a respectable image as a senior pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He is said to be fairly close to Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the RCCG. Those rooting for him say that positioning him on the ticket would balance any insinuation on the country drifting towards an Islamic path as some critics of Buhari have sought to assert. The consideration of Senator Borofice, it was learnt, was aimed at strategically breaking up the hold of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the Ekiti/Ondo axis, where the PDP is presently known to have set its foothold. “By bringing out Borofice, who is about the only APC senator elected official in the Ekiti/Ondo axis, we can push for presence in the two states given that the PDP is in control of those two states,” a close associate of Tinubu said at the weekend. Edun, who is reported to be the third person under consideration served as commissioner of finance for the two terms Governor Tinubu between 1999 and 2007 and he is said to be in position to bring relative youth to a presidency under Buhari’s watch. “Our consideration of Edun is on the need of young blood given that Buhari is now of age and would need, young savvy men to keep him in track,” a source said. Both Osinbajo and Borofice were acclaimed at Buhari’s declaration. Edun’s presence at the event could not be confirmed at press time. One other prospective nominee, Senator Olurunnimbe Mamora Vanguard learnt was like Dr. Fayemi not being favourably considered by the Tinubu camp ostensibly because of his independent trait, which reportedly came to fore in the testy days leading to Governor Babatunde Fashola’s certification of a second term ticket in 2011. Mamora was also present at Buhari’s event. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/tinubus-camp-lines-three-men-buharis-running-mate/

If there were doubts as to he real intentions behind the determination of Professor Attahiru Jega, National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to foist on Nigeria an electoral process that gives unparalleled advantage to his northern part of the country through the instrumentality of a lopsided allocation of some 21,000 Polling Units, PUs, as against slightly over 8,000 PUs for the states of the South, the doubts disappeared at his ast week’s meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs. At that meeting, like a “pulpit bully”, and against convention where decisions at INEC are reached through consensus, Jega insisted that RECs should be involved in the admittedly primitive mode of open voting on a matter that was as controversial as PUs allocation. This report presents Jega’s systematic approach to see through his scheme, starting with his attempt at power mongering. MEETING WITH RECs Driven by a messianic desire to confer electoral advantage on northern Nigeria against states in the South, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, upped the ante last week at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs. The meeting took place at the INEC Headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja. It was a stormy meeting, held Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Inside sources at the meeting expressed shock at what was described as the “pulpit bully” attitude of the INEC Chairman. Sunday Vanguard gathered that what was meant to be a meeting of minds, where the main focus would be the now controversial lopsided allocation of Polling Units, PUs, turned out to be a farcical engagement, with Jega, practically “coercing the commissioners” There were 30 RECs in attendance. What was strange, however, was that the RECs did not know that they were being led into an ambush by Jega, whose proclivity for maximum control of INEC had, sometime last year, seen him write to the Attorney General of the Federation, seeking clarification about the powers of his office (details are provided below). CONCERN RAISED BY RECs IGNORED REC after REC, most of those in attendance expressed concern on the PUs controversy and “actually counseled that the idea be shelved until after the 2015 general elections. “The meeting, which also reviewed the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the distribution of the Permanent Voter Card (PVC), witnessed several expressions of concerns by State Electoral Commissioners whose appraisal of the PVC distribution process was mostly unsatisfactory,’’ a source at the meeting said. “They insisted that the Commission was moving too slowly and that the limited time barely three months left for the election may be insufficient for the exercise if things were not fast-tracked”. THE DICTATOR CHARGES The source further disclosed that Jega waxed dictatorial: “Jega insisted on conflating the time pressure by pressing forward with the much criticized allocation of new Polling Units. This came against sound advice by some commissioners who warned that given the prevailing public perception regarding the Polling Units allocation, it may raise unnecessary ethnic tensions’’. “Even when he was reminded of the letter from the Senate Committee on INEC”, the source continued, he was said to have reacted angrily that the letter was not a decision of the whole Senate and has no effect. Similarly, he was said to have been reminded of the fact that some groups of Nigerians and even a political party have gone to court over the matter and there was need to suspend the exercise, but he bluntly responded that, except there was a court order, the Polling Units must be created. He may be right on that score: only a court order, in the strictest sense, can stop him, especially based on the seeming messianic inclination. But more was to come. For a Chairman who treats some of the commissioners as his staff, Sunday Vanguard learnt that even the letter from the Senate Committee calling for the suspension of the allocation was read on the pages of newspapers like most Nigerians. The letter has not been discussed at any formal meeting apart from the tangential mention it got last week. Jega, it was gathered, had also been sent a security advisory given the dangerous dimension the lopsided PUs had taken; but this was ignored. Even then, it was gathered that RECs from the South-West, South-South, South-East and, interestingly, North-Central, verbally cautioned Jega. Sensing that the tide was turning against his desperation, the INEC Chairman, the source went on, called for voting which was agreed to. PRIMITIVE OPEN VOTING But he ambushed the commissioners by directing that the voting process should be open. “In the end”, the source went on, “voting was conducted – in which three, RECs who had previously advised against the policy and still maintained their objections, abstained from participating in the voting because they were angry and disappointed that, despite the clear voices of the majority who advised against it, the Chairman surprisingly called for vote thereby allowing the matter to degenerate and brought to a clear-cut sectional dichotomy. “After the voting, Jega got 13 votes for his lopsided PUs, and 13 votes against.” But this was a stalemate. Althou it would have been 14 for him but one vote was voided because the administrative secretary who represented the REC from Benue State had his vote voided. Now, had the three abstaining RECs been counted and the votes of six who did not attend as well as some Administrative Secretaries who did not vote, because they erroneously thought the voting was for commissioners only were taken to account, it was clear even to Jega that he was swimming against the tide of internal and external stakeholder opinion. Despite this, less than 24 hours after the stalemate, the INEC Chairman directed a Director, one Musa H. Adamu, through a letter dated, Thursday, October 16, 2014, to all RECs, to submit report on the implementation of the PUs in their respective states on or before Thursday, October 30, 2014. Nuru Yakubu, who is seen as the architect of the allocation, Musa Adamu and Jega himself are all from the North and appear to be pushing an agenda that places undue advantage in the hands of the North against the states of the South. This was the same way the northern dominated military regimes created for Nigeria the lopsided 774 local governments with the North preponderantly favoured against states of the South; just as state creation has left the South-East geo-political zone with just five states whereas the North-West has seven states. Meanwhile, the lopsided local governments creation engenders a regime of unequal resource allocation in a nation of clashing socio-political and economic interests. It is under this same condition that Jega had sought extra-legal platform to capture all available powers in INEC, part of a grand scheme to ride rough shod over his colleagues. JEGA SEEKS MORE POWERS To get the legal backing to his enormous power-grab, Jega had written a letter dated June 19, 2013, to Mohammed Adoke, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, asking for clarification on who should be the accounting officer of the body. He noted: “Since our assumption of office as a new Commission in July 2010, having regard to the fact that neither the Constitution nor the Electoral Act defined the role of the Secretary to the Commission as the Accounting Officer, I have considered myself as such, relying upon provisions of the Procurement Act, particularly Sections 18, 19 and 20 of the Act and Regulations issued by the Bureau of Public Procurement to the effect that in an MDA/Corporate procuring entity, the Chief Executive is the Accounting Officer. “I have also done this, given the weighty personal liability which the Procurement Act places on the shoulders of the Accounting Officer. The tradition in INEC had been that a Permanent Secretary was posted as the Secretary, until 2008, when INEC, having regard to the provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act appointed its Secretary. The functions/roles of the Secretary as specified did not say or imply that he is the Accounting Officer”. Jega told Adoke that the clarification was necessary in the light of the restructuring and reorganisation going on in the commission as it prepares for what he described as “better, effective and efficient service delivery towards 2015 and beyond”. He insisted that it was “pertinent to seek this clarification for the avoidance of doubt and in order to put lingering matters to rest.” The “lingering matters” Jega spoke about, it was learnt, might not be unconnected with what a source described as the frosty relationship between the Chairman and other commissioners over the chairman’s powers. ADOKE CLARIFIES LIMITS OF CHAIRMAN’S POWERS In a July 26, 2013 reply to Jega’s request, Adoke declared categorically that the Chairman is not the accounting officer of INEC. Adoke said: “I have examined relevant provisions of the law particularly, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, the Electoral Act, the Public Procurement Act and extant Financial Regulations in order to determine whether the law has expressly provided for the position of either the ‘Chief Executive Officer’ or ‘Accounting Officer’ of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “Regrettably, it would appear that no such terminology was used in the statutes examined. Item 14(1)(a) of Part 1 to the Third Schedule of the Constitution only provides that the Chairman shall be the Chief Electoral Commissioner. The provision does not state that the ‘Chief Electoral Commissioner’ is the ‘Chief Executive Officer. “I have similarly examined the functions and powers of the Commission as provided for in item 15 of Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Constitution and sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the Electoral Act and wish to observe that these are functions and powers that can only be exercised by the Commission and not by the Chairman or any individual Commissioner except as may be delegated by the Commission under Section 152 of the Electoral Act or item 15(h) of Part 1 to the Third Schedule to the Constitution.” “Consequently, in the absence of any clear donation of the powers of a Chief Executive Officer or Accounting Officer by the relevant statutes, and in the absence of any evidence to indicate that these functions and powers of the Commission have been delegated to the Chairman, I am unable to come to the reasoned conclusion that the law contemplates that the Chairman of INEC shall be the Chief Executive Officer or Accounting Officer of the Commission,” Adoke explained. He added that the Electoral Act confers on the Secretary enormous administrative powers akin to those of Directors-General, who are “statutorily the Accounting Officers and Chief Executive Officers of their various Commissions”. Adoke pointed out that this is what obtains in similar commissions, such as Police Service Commission, National Population Commission and Federal Judicial Service Commission. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/northsouth-division-tears-inec-apart/ |
Buruku (Benue) – The Independent Electoral Commission has declared Mr John Tiav of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), winner of the re-contested Buruku Federal Constituency seat in Benue. In a re-election held on Saturday in Buruku, Tiav scored 25,988 votes to defeat Mr John Tine of the Labour Party, who scored 3,602. Mr Sekav Iyortyom of the All Progressive Congress scored 395 votes. Alhaji Baba Abba-Yusuf, Benue Resident Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , who also served as the returning officer, said Tiav met all requirements of the Electoral Act to be declared winner. Abba-Yusuf who announced the result on Sunday in Buruku, said that the PDP candidate scored the highest number of votes. He said that 101,198 eligible voters registered for the election, but only 30,378 turned out for the exercise. He also commended both the candidates and their supporters for their peaceful conduct throughout the period of the election. APC candidate withdrew from the contest a day to the election. NAN reports that the Supreme Court had overturned the outcome of the first election conducted in 2011, and ordered for a fresh conduct, while excluding its previous winner, Mr Orker Jev of the APC. An aspirant of the party, Mr Sekav Iyortyom, had challenged the outcome of the party’s primaries on the grounds that it was not won by Jev, who was declared winner by the party. The aspirant had alleged that his name was fraudulently replaced with that of Jev, who later went to the House of Representatives to represent the constituency. The court granted the prayers of Sekav and ordered for a fresh election.(NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/pdp-wins-buruku-federal-constituency-seat-benue/ |
Abuja – The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday met in Abuja to kick-start the process of amending its constitution ahead of its national convention on Oct. 29. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Lai Mohammed, said this while addressing journalists on the outcome of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the party’s secretariat. According to Mohammed, there is the need to get the NEC approval for the convention. He said: “principally, we proposed certain amendment to the constitution of the party that will allow the party to function much more efficiently. “To that extent, we will hold what I call an extraordinary convention of the party on the 29th of this month in Abuja. “This is to submit the proposals of the amendment to the national convention of the party,” he said. Mohammed assured that the time table for the already published guidelines for primaries had not changed. Reacting to reports that the APC members were the main campaigners in the #bringbackourgirls campaign, Mohammed said the party exco was not aware of that. He, however, said it was not impossible for party members to sympathise with any group. “Make no mistake that we in the APC believe strongly as a party that Mr President owes this nation a duty to secure our lives and property. “As long as those girls are missing, we as individuals or as a party will continue to demand that Mr President does everything to make sure that they are released. “I commend those who have been part of the campaign for the last six months and if any member of APC is a member of that group, we commend them.” He denied allegations that the party had evidence that the president was keeping a secret about the kidnapped Chibok girls. “I never said in our press conference that we have evidence that Mr President is keeping a secret from us. “But we have cited three instances that Mr President needs to come out and explain to Nigerians.” (NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/apc-moves-amend-constitution/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

THE petition authored by the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ayodele Daramola, on the alleged assault on two judges in the state judiciary by suspected supporters of the governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, has been shoved aside by the National Judicial Council (NJC), Nigerian Tribune has learnt. In the said petition, aftermath the judicial crisis in the state, occasioned by an alleged plot to scuttle Fayose’s swearing-in, Daramola levelled accusations against Fayose and his supporters, who he referred to as thugs. A council source told the Nigerian Tribune that at the Monday meeting of the council, where Daramola was directed to open the courts in the state for activities, the council was said to have reasoned that Daramola’s accusations and pieces of evidence he provided amounted to hearsay, since he noted at the opening paragraph of the petition that he was out of the state when the incidents happened. The council reportedly ordered the two judges allegedly assaulted to write personal petitions to it, detailing the events of the two alleged attacks. Daramola’s petition was said to have been largely considered unsuitable, due to the allegations raised in the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ekiti chapter, over his alleged complicity in the plot to stop the governor-elect and alleged partiality in the entire saga. It was further learnt that the council reasoned that hearing directly from those allegedly affected would imbue the probe process with the requisite objectivity. Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, who is handling the suit on Fayose’s eligibility to contest the June 21 governorship election, allegedly had his court disrupted on September 22. On September 25, Justice John Adeyeye was allegedly beaten and his suit torn while trying to control crowd around Fayose, within the court premises. A council source noted that Daramola’s petition gave him away as an interested party, who might not be too objective in his claims, with the potential of misdirecting the planned probe panel and the public. It was further pointed out to the Nigerian Tribune that Daramola’s choice of words and the disparaging manner he referred to the governor- elect were shocking to many members, as well as senior lawyers and judges. “If he had sought advice before writing that letter, he would have been advised against it. Even Supreme Court gives some regard when writing about you. Just consider how the CJ even referred to the governor-elect in the letter. It betrayed a mindset. No serious system would rely on such letter to commence a probe you are asking about,” the source said. One of the affected judges is also likely to back out of lodging an official complaint, after a certain senior lawyer reportedly queried his action. The said judge reportedly confessed his mistake to the senior lawyer and indicated that he would likely let the sleeping dog lie on the matter. Nigerian Tribune was informed that an official probe might open a can of worms that could consume even the complainants. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that lobbying had begun for Daramola’s job, considering the general feeling that he might not last in office. A widely-respected lawyer from the state revealed that at least two judges in the state judiciary were already running around to position themselves, against Daramola’s perceived imminent exit as CJ. The senior lawyer, however, noted that the agenda of the lobbying judges would not see the light of the day, as further steps had reportedly been taken on the planned reconciliation of Fayose and Daramola. The governor-elect reportedly assured those behind the peace move of his commitment to it, but was said to have insisted that Daramola would have to be purged of his alleged partisanship and partiality. Checks also showed that the advanced party from the judiciary to the Stress Management Conference in Athen, Greece, departed last night, with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, staying back as exclusively reported by the Nigerian Tribune. Mukhtar decided to wait till Thursday to see how Fayose’s inauguration would go, before either joining the team or pulling out of the trip completely. http://tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/18704-njc-ignores-ekiti-cj-s-petition |

since when has kwakwanso became d spokeman of d two governors? Let them decamp and spare us all these outdated headlines. |
A new twist has crept into Adamawa State governorship seat tussle as fresh facts have revealed that the newly-installed governor, James Bala Ngilari, actually sent a resignation letter as deputy governor to his predecessor, Vice-Admiral Murtala Nyako, which the latter accepted. Documents exclusively obtained by Sunday Tribune showed that Ngilari sent separate resignation letters to both Nyako and the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Ahmed Umaru Fintiri, the same day. In the two separate letters, written on 15 July, the speaker was copied the one to Nyako, while Nyako was also copied that sent to the speaker. To show his acceptance of Ngilari’s resignation as his deputy, Nyako had on the same day, nominated a replacement for him as deputy governor. The nominated replacement was Honourable Adamu Kamale. Nyako’s letter to the speaker with ref. SHA/5/528/Vol. V, dated 15 July, with the heading “REPLACEMENT OF A DEPUTY GOVERNOR,” reads: “Dear Speaker, pursuant to Section 191 (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the powers vested in me as Governor of Adamawa State, I hereby nominate Honourable Adamu Kamale as my deputy governor to replace Honourable Bala Ngilari who resigned this morning. Please accept the assurances of my highest regards and esteem.” The letter was personally signed by Nyako. Nyako was reportedly impeached after the nomination letter was received by the Assembly. The documents showed that Mr Francis G. Richard, the Clerk to the Assembly, received Nyako’s letter. The documents were also placed before Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja who ruled that Ngilari’s resignation letter should have been to Nyako and not the state Assembly. In his judgment, he held that the onus was on Fintiri as the acting governor to provide evidence of Nyako’s acceptance of Ngilari’s resignation to his former boss, as a proof that Ngilari resigned constitutionally. Fintiri had appealed the judgment. In Ngilari’s resignation letter to Nyako, obtained by Sunday Tribune, he said he was opting out on personal grounds. It reads: “Pursuant to Section 306 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I kindly notify you of my resignation from the office of the deputy governor of Adamawa State forthwith on personal grounds. I want to thank you immensely for the opportunity to serve Adamawa State and wish you and the good people of the state well in the remaining period of your administration.” While copying the speaker the letter to Nyako, Ngilari wrote, “above for your information and necessary action”. The content of Ngilari’s resignation letter to the speaker was same as the one to Nyako. Fiery human rights lawyer and activist, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, is not only a consummate social justice crusader, but a throbbing liberator of knotty discourses. He opens a can of worms on the real genesis of the Boko Haram insurgency which the nation is currently grappling with, placing it squarely on the laps of former president Olusegun Obasanjo and those governors who introduced sharia laws in their states and allowed it to spin out of control. He says Obasanjo’s blunt refusal to halt the strict code of Islamic laws which was ab-initio political, through an overriding constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court to halt its spread, emboldened nascent groups and indi viduals in the affected states to seek for a pro found purification of the application of the laws, ultimately, washing up’ with Boko Haram. He opens up more on the military which is faced with the responsibility of taming the Frankenstein monster, and is in the process of courting contro versies on corruption, mutiny, and court martials. He says the war has so far defied all known prognosis by producing no heroes on both sides. Tension is now brewing in Ekiti State House of Assembly as lawmakers plot to impeach the Speaker, Hon. Adewale Omirin. Also to be removed in the new power game are the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Taiwo Orisalade; the Majority leader, Hon Churchill Adedipe; the Chief Whip, Hon. Ade Ajayi, and other principal officers of the House. Twenty-five out of 26 members of the present Assembly are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with only one member, Hon. Oyedele Ajibola, belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sequel to the defection of Hon. Bunmi Oriniowo to APC prior to the June 21 governorship election. A source in the Assembly confided in newsmen in Ado Ekiti yesterday that the anti-Speaker lawmakers were mainly those representing constituencies in Ekiti North Senatorial district, comprising Ikole, Ilejemeje, Moba, Ido/Osi and Oye Local Government Areas of the State. The new move, which the source said could not be unconnected with the imminent change of government in the state, as Governor Kayode Fayemi’s tenure expires on Wednesday, October 15, was aimed at balancing the political equation when the Governor elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose is sworn-in. The Speaker, who responded to the rumour, denied the reports of leadership crisis in the House, saying the lawmakers are united and remain committed to the development of the State. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Wole Olujobi, Omirin said the rumour is just the figment of imaginations of those peddling it, noting that the unity among members is something of pride to members and Ekiti people in general. The source said the incumbent governor is from the North; his Deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, from the Central, while the speaker is from the South senatorial districts respectively. The source relayed to journalists that the equation will change with the emergence of Fayose, who is from the Central and his deputy, Dr. Olusola Eleka, from the South, the same senatorial district with Hon Omirin, which forms part of the reasons to move for his ouster, coupled with external interference. Another reason adduced by the source for the change of leadership was the fact that the lawmakers were said to have lamented during a recent visit to a national leader of the party in Lagos, expressing disgust at how Fayemi had allegedly treated them in the last three and half years due to seeming weak leadership. The source said the lawmakers later resorted to the new tactic when they returned to Ekiti, seeing the Speaker’s removal as the best way to get at the governor. The source said: “The Speaker may be removed anytime from now except he could play a fast game. Some APC lawmakers are bent on removing him at all cost, not only to balance the political equation, but to punish him for the sins he had committed under Governor Fayemi.” Rattled by the lawmakers’ desperate move, the leaders of the party held a truce meeting with the aggrieved legislators up to midnight on Friday, urging them to sheathe their swords, which the source said have been fruitful. The Speaker has urged Ekiti people to continue to have faith in their elected representatives in the House of Assembly, assuring them that members will not betray them in whatever guise. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/crisis-hits-ekiti-assembly-as-lawmakers-move-for-speaker-s-impeachment/191064/ |
Following allegations of marginalisation in the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaders and members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Lagos State have pulled out of the party to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). CPC is one of the legacy parties – Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN), All Nigerian People's Party (ANPP) and a faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – that merged to form APC. The state chapter of CPC had been alleging usurpation of party structures and maginalisation of other parties in the merger by APC, which had carried on like the leading party in the merger. Before pulling out of APC, the CPC group in the Lagos chapter of APC said after months of several meetings, consultations and deliberations, the long- awaited justice was not done to its members and from the look of things, they were afraid of what would be their political fate, hence the need to take their political future into their hands by withdrawing their membership from the APC and moving en- masse to the PDP where they believe their interests would be welcome and protected. Briefing journalists recently to announce the pull out of CPC members from APC, the State Chairman of APC-CPC in Lagos State, Hon. Ashogbon Lattif, said it was unfortunate that the leadership of APC and CPC failed to yield to their cries of marginalisation and gross impunity perpetrated by the defunct ACN which is running the affairs of APC in the state. Noting that the members of the CPC group took their complaints to the APC National headquarters, but nothing had been done to address the situation, he said, “What we experienced shows their greed of uncommon proportion and why they turned a supposed formidable merger process to conquest of other merging parties in order to satisfy their uncommon greed.” He pointed out that the APC membership registration exercise which aimed at building a sense of belonging among all was done in total disregard to the APC national guidelines as regards the involvement of the merging parties with respect to the manner which the registration officers, in wards and LGAs and state supervisors for the exercise were to be shared among the three legacy parties. Ashogbon noted that out of the 171 supervisors engaged at the Local Government level, CPC had only 26 slots instead of 57 due to his party. At the ward supervisors’ level, 376 slots were given to CPC out of 1,128. For Polling Unit Registration Officers, 346 was given to CPC against the entitlement of 5,093 out of a total lots of 16, 978. He further stated that the congresses which ought to produce united party structure of the APC was characterised by uncommon greed of the defunct ACN leadership. At the state level, out of 35 executives, 34 seats were taken by CAN, while one was left to be shared between CPC and ANPP. In the 57 LGAs, out of 1368, ACN took 1349 and left 19. He however said his party members had finally resolved in their mind without being apologetic to anyone that the APC-CPC faction across the 57 council areas of the state was moving en-masse to PDP where they believe that the tenets of democracy is appreciated and practiced, and that they remain resolute in their determination to rescue Lagos come 2015 general elections. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lagos-cpc-members-pull-out-of-apc-join-pdp/191063/ |

APC Is Everything But Responsible Opposition – PDP Says Opposition Party Adds No Value To The Peace, Unity And Progress Of Nigeria In our quest for a robust democracy where a vibrant opposition keeps the party in power on its toes via constructive criticism and offering alternative policy plans, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had upon the registration of All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 31, 2013 congratulated the party and advised it to enrich the political space with positive ideas. We again admonished the party along the same line after the election of its National Executives on June 14, 2014 to “ensure an issue based opposition that will purposefully and constructively engage and challenge the PDP with decency and maturity as prescribed by democratic tenets and principles.” Stating that Nigerians deserve a vibrant and patriotic opposition driven only by the national interest, we charged the new APC leadership to “put the unity and welfare of Nigerians ahead of other considerations and jettison all divisive tendencies including unguarded statements that overheat the polity and pitch Nigerians against one another”. As we inch towards the 2015 general elections, it has become crystal clear that we had in error dressed the APC in oversized robe. We clearly charted for them a job that is way beyond their pay grade. We can say without any fear of contradictions that the APC in its 14 months of existence has shown that no serious minded person should call it an opposition party as it has demonstrated to be nothing more than a band of anarchists, scaremongers and idle politicians. The motley assembly of political opportunists and frustrated office seekers in over a year of its registration has issued 117 press statements which ALL have been devoted to abusing President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP officials and promoting division among Nigerians. There has not been ONE press statement in which the APC had taken up any major policy issue by the PDP and offered Nigerians how it intends to do it better if it ever had the chance to govern the country. Statement after statement, all the APC pours out are bile, hate insult and low-quality propaganda from the stable of its Goebbelian ilk and Chemical Ali breed. In the same vein, APC leaders have continued to make inflammatory utterances tailored to incite hatred and violence and ultimately balkanize our nation. The series of threats by APC leaders ahead of the 2015 general election and the announcement by their National Chairman that they will form a parallel government should they lose the 2015 presidential election clearly point to their anti-Nigeria agenda. With nothing to offer the country as a party conceived in perfidy and born in opportunism, they strive every now and then to look for scandals to feast on while attempting to corrupt all the institutions of accountability to shield the many maggots that dominate the ranks of its top chieftains. It boggles the mind how a party where a kilometer of road costs N1billion in states under its control by companies linked to one of its henchmen as against less than N50m when PDP governors were in charge looks outside its house for scandals. What can be more scandalous than 20% of the Internally Generated Revenue in its richest state going into the pockets of one of the party owners consistently for over 16 years now? Yet, the poster boys of greed are today chanting "change" in our country! This corrosive outfit has done so much harm to our polity that words have lost their meanings. For example calling themselves "progressives" is the greatest oxymoron in our political lexicon since amalgamation. Their major criterion for anyone to be a progressive is having one or two headlines of insults heaped on the President and PDP officers. As an elder statesman succinctly puts it, if a group of armed robbers held a press conference to abuse President Jonathan, the APC leaders would go and beg them to become their "navigators". Indeed, the PDP had looked forward to a robust opposition that will constructively engage on issue-for - issue and policy-for-policy debate on nation building only for the APC to expose its hollowness as an ‘Anarchic Peoples Club’. We trust that Nigerians are too politically sophisticated to be hoodwinked into swapping our Transformation Agenda with supporter of APC politics garnished with pedestrian rabble-rousing. When these forged progressives come to town invoking the imagery of violence, preaching hate and marching on our fault lines, let the patriotic people of Nigeria ask: “Progressive’ Politicians, where is your roadmap to progress?” Signed: Olisa Metuh https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=364216857069656 |
A Syrian woman who was brainwashed to join ISIS by a man she met online, opened up on how she fled after witnessing be headings and crucifixions. The 25 year old called Kadija told CNN she found herself drawn to a Tunisian man she met online ,he gradually made her trust him and began to lure her to the Islamic state, assuring her it was not a terrorist organisation “He would say, ‘We are going to properly implement Islam. Right now we are in a state of war, a phase where we need to control the country, so we have to be harsh.’” He told her he was coming to the Syrian city of Raqqa, that they could even get married. “I got in touch with my cousin, and she said, ‘You can come join us in the Khansa’a Brigade. She was living in Raqqa with her husband who was with the Islamic State,” The brigade is the feared, all-female police for ISIS. With her cousin to open the doors, Khadija was welcomed into the feared Khansa’a brigade. The Khansa’a Brigade is made up of around 25 to 30 women and is tasked with patrolling the streets of Raqqa to ensure that women adhere to proper clothing as outlined by the Islamic State. Beaded or slightly form-fitting abayas are banned. Women are not allowed to show their eyes. Those who broke the laws are lashed. The lashings to the women who broke ISIS rules were carried out by Umm Hamza. When Khadija first saw Umm Hamza, she was terrified. “She’s not a normal female. She’s huge, she has an AK, a pistol, a whip, a dagger and she wears the niqab,” Brigade commander Umm Rayan sensed Khadija’s fear “and she got close to me and said a sentence I won’t forget. She said, ‘We are harsh with the infidels, but merciful among ourselves.’” Khadija was trained to clean, dismantle, and fire a weapon. She was paid $200 a month and received food rations. Her family sensed Khadija was slipping away, but were helpless to stop it. Her mother tried to warn her. “She would always say to me, ‘Wake up, take care of yourself. You are walking, but you don’t know where you are going.’” “At the start, I was happy with my job. I felt that I had authority in the streets. But then I started to get scared, scared of my situation. I even started to be afraid of myself.” She started thinking: “I am not like this. I have a degree in education. I shouldn’t be like this. What happened to me? What happened in my mind that brought me here?” And her image of ISIS began to crumble. Burned into her mind is an image she saw online of a 16-year-old boy who was crucified for rape. She questioned her inclusion in a group capable of such violence. “The worst thing I saw was a man getting his head hacked off in front of me,” Even more personally, she witnessed ISIS’ brand of violence reserved for women. The brigade shared its building with a man who specialized in marriage for ISIS fighters. “He was one of the worst people,” she said of the man tasked with finding wives for both local and foreign fighters. “The foreign fighters are very brutal with women, even the ones they marry,” she said. “There were cases where the wife had to be taken to the emergency ward because of the violence, the sexual violence.” With her commander pressuring her to submit to marriage, Khadija decided she needed to leave the brigade. “So it was at this point, I said enough. After all that I had already seen and all the times I stayed silent, telling myself, ‘We’re at war, then it will all be rectified.’ “But after this, I decided no, I have to leave.” Khadija left just days before the coalition airstrikes, but her family remains in Syria. She was smuggled across the border to Turkey. Khadija still wears the niqab, not just to conceal her identity but also because she’s struggling to adapt back to life outside the Islamic State. Regretful of her immersion in radical Islam, she is wary of another sudden change. “It has to be gradual, so that I don’t become someone else. I am afraid of becoming someone else. Someone who swings, as a reaction in the other direction, after I was so entrenched in religion, that I reject religion completely,” “I don’t want anyone else to be duped by them. Too many girls think they are the right Islam,” she said. She desperately wants to be the girl she was before falling under the spell of ISIS — “a girl who is merry, who loves life and laughter… who loves to travel, to draw, to walk in the street with her headphones listening to music without caring what anyone thinks,” she said. “I want to be like that again.” http://newswrita.com/how-i-joined-isis-after-being-lured-online-25-yr-old-woman-reveals/

The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has berated the Governor Kayode Fayemi-led All Progressives Congress for allegedly sponsoring another suit in an Abuja High Court by proxy, seeking an injunction to stop the swearing-in of the state Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on October 16. The party posited that the new dimension the issue has taken and the alleged step taken by the APC had again confirmed its position that the ruling party is desperate to stall the inauguration of the governor-elect, having lost out in the governorship election. In a statement in Ado-Ekiti by the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, the party noted that well-meaning Ekiti people and Nigerians should note that the APC and its allies were bent on fomenting trouble in the state. The party was reacting to the suit no FHC/Abuja/ CS 709/14 between Young Democratic Party vs INEC, Fayose, Others. A socio-political pressure group in the state, E-11 had also filed similar suit against Fayose at the state High Court, which trial had elicited so much controversies in the state, leading to alleged invasion of the Ado-Ekiti High Court on September 21 and the harassment of the trial judge, Justice Segun Ogunyemi, by party supporters. Commenting on the new development, which the party said was targeted at causing mayhem in the state, the PDP said: “The PDP has again been vindicated about our earlier alertness on the desperation of the ruling APC in the state to use the judiciary to truncate democracy in Nigeria as the party has now rushed to Abuja to file another ex-parte motion to stop the swearing in of the governor-elect on October 16. “This is a confirmation of our earlier alarm and submission that the APC which gallantly lost the gubernatorial election on June 21 was desperate to scuttle democracy in the state through the back door judicial process. “This new, strange and desperate step by the APC ruling government has clearly demonstrated that the APC is an unrepentant enemy of democracy, which is prepared to do anything and buy the judiciary. “Despite the fact that the E-11 suit is still pending and the election tribunal is also pending, the fundamental question is “why does APC have to jettison the two pending cases in the state and had to run to Abuja to file another suit still on the same matter? “It is our candid advice that some of our judges should not be willing tools in the hands of the political desperado. The judiciary is the last hope of the common man and should live up to expectation so that our nascent democracy would not be truncated. “It has never been in the Nigerian history that a popularly elected governor with overwhelming majority in a free and transparent election could be denied swearing-in just because some people are desperate to cling on to power,” the PDP stated. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pdp-berates-apc-for-sponsoring-new-suit-to-stop-fayose-s-inauguration/190864/

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a British bishop who stood down after admitting to an affair with a married parishioner, the Vatican said on Monday. “The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Kieran Conry from the dioceses of Arundel and Brighton,” a statement said. Conry, 64, had said in a letter to his parishioners that he had veered from the precepts of the Catholic church but underscored that his actions “were not illegal and did not involve minors.” According to reports in the British press, Conry, who was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 2001 as bishop of Arundel and Brighton in southeast England, had an affair with a married woman. The affair was exposed when the estranged husband of the woman hired a private detective to follow his wife when their marriage broke down. The Archbishop of Southwark Peter Smith has been named the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese until a new bishop takes up the office. The head of the Catholic church in England and Wales, Vincent Nichols, said it was a “difficult and sad moment” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/pope-accepts-bishops-resignation-affair-married-parishioner/ |
