Nairaland / General / This Lagos! 10-year-olds Smoke Hemp In Ajegunle by Ayemokhia: 2:27pm On May 17, 2010
The new Divisional Police Officer in charge  of  Ajeromi Police Station, Ajegunle, Mr. Slyvia Chinedu (CSP) has lamented that kids as young as 10 years old openly smoke marijuana on the streets of Ajegunle.

He stated this during a visit to the council of Chiefs and Elders and the people of Aiyetoro.

“What type of children do we have? A visit to the mortuary will show you that many of the corpses there are thse of the youths. It is here I realised that little children from age 10-17 smoke Indian hemp openly on the streets of Ajegunle,” he said.

“You need to see the number of girls from Ajegunle moving out every evening to go and prostitute in Apapa, Ikeja and Lagos Island on daily basis. Same thing goes for the number of your children who are armed robbers and move out everyday from this environment to go and rob in other locations.

“I have been talking to my policemen to see how I can change some of their attitude which are part of the problems.

“I learnt that there was a time in the past when the people of Ajegunle rose up one day and marched from house to house chasing out all the criminals among them. This time, we are going to do the same thing.

“I want the elders to constitute peace and security committees, have a central committee and subcommittees on street-by-street basis. Many of you were born and grew up in this area, so you know these criminal elements better than I do. They are not spirits, they are human and they live among you.

“We will no longer raid any house in Ajegunle alone. It is the community that will identify the criminal hideouts and will invite the police and together, we shall raid these hideouts. This is some sort of community policing,” he said.

According to him, “Police alone cannot do it and where there is peace, there will be development and progress. Development can never be achieved in a community prone to crisis.

“I was posted to Ajah community in Lekki when that place was on fire. A lot of people were killed; so many things happened. I hope and pray that my assignment here will be better than what I did in Ajah.

“Ajegunle is a mini-Nigeria. Here, you have Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Hausa, every tribe in Nigeria is well represented in Ajegunle. Having considered this and other issues, I discovered that it is a complex society to govern and to police.”

Responding, Chief (Alhaji) Sheu Aremu Olola, Baale of Aiyetoro said: “We the people of Aiyetoro are peace-loving people, so we are ready to cooperate fully with the new DPO. This is evident in the number of people who have come out today to listen to you.”

Politics / One Year Not Enough To Meet Targets, Says Jonathan by Ayemokhia: 2:13pm On May 17, 2010
President Goodluck Jonathan has said the remaining 12 months of this administration is such a short time to achieve set targets.

He has also asked Nigerians to pray for him saying “without your prayers I will be doomed, without the Almighty God, I will be doomed”.

The President, however, indicated that he is determined to make remarkable impact and that begins with a road map for development in the country.

Jonathan made these statements at two separate events: a banquet held to mark the end of his visit to Rivers State and a special prayer session by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's family yesterday in Abuja.

“We cannot achieve much under these 12 months,” said the President. “But one basic thing is that we must set a clear road map that everybody should know where we are going so that we can set targets and time line for you to achieve your targets.”

Jonathan pledged to serve Nigeria diligently within the time frame available to him. Speaking on the Niger Delta, the President promised to contribute as much as possible to the development of the region.
During his visit to Rivers State, he inaugurated some projects, inspected others and laid foundation stones. He praised Governor Chibuike Amaechi for his vision in developing the state.

Jonathan stated that he was particularly pleased with road networks in Rivers and the monorail project in progress. Another area, which he said caught his interest, was the development of the education and the power sectors.

“Beside the road network, I want to commend Governor Amaechi on the three major projects; the quality of primary and secondary schools that we saw, as well as the power project that would aid small business enterprises,” he said.

The President admitted that some of the projects needed the assistance of the Federal Government to realize and noted that the state government’s vision for the younger generation is a welcome development.
Commenting on the building of the Greater Port Harcourt, Jonathan advised that it would be too cumbersome for the state government to think of building all the structures and that it would be better to allow the city to develop gradually without distortion.

In his speech, Amaechi expressed appreciation to the President for considering it worthwhile to visit the state and thanked him for promising to refund the over N45 billion expended by the state on federal projects.
In a veiled reference to godfatherism, Amaechi described it as a dead phenomenon.

Meanwhile, at the special prayer session by CAN for the late President Yar'Adua's family, Jonathan recalled the experience of Jeremiah in the scriptures when he was called, he cried out to God and said he was too small to carry out the mandate given to him God and God promised him that He was going to stand by him.
“It is only through your prayers that God will stay by me to succeed,” he said.

Expressing the belief that Nigerians “know what is good for us as a nation”, the President urged the citizens to imbibe the political will to do what is right.
“I will work with my team and the National Assembly to see that relevant laws are enacted and those that need to be amended are amended”, he pledged, adding that for there to be credible elections in the country, “it is certain that certain laws must change”.

The President welcomed constructive criticism, saying that he believes that all of us have to change and be patriotic, stressing that “together Nigeria will be great. From cleaner to the presidency this country will change if we be guided by God.”

Among those at the service were Governors Peter Obi of Anambra State; Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State; Theodore Orji of Abia State; and Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State.

Others include Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyilui; Foreign Affairs, Odein Ajumogobia; Labaran Maku, members of the National Assembly led by Senate President David Mark and his wife, and members of the diplomatic corps and members of various churches.

Politics / Killing Accused Claims 'sleepwalking' by Ayemokhia: 9:33pm On May 08, 2010
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - A psychiatrist testified that a Colorado teen was sleepwalking when he allegedly shot and killed his 9-year-old brother and wounded his mother.

Dr. John Hardy gave his testimony at an ongoing hearing to decide if Daniel Gudino, 14, of Colorado Springs will become one of the youngest people in the state to be charged as an adult with second-degree murder.

Authorities say Gudino told police he shot his brother and mother in 2009 and later added in a recorded statement, "I was hoping it was just a nightmare."

In the weeklong hearing that began on Monday, Hardy testified that Daniel Gudino was sleepwalking when the shooting occurred.

Hardy said Gudino has parasomnia and thought he was shooting at ghosts.

"If somebody is in a narcoleptic sleepwalking mode, as rare as that might be, they're not conscious, even though they can do some fairly complex behaviour," Hardy said.

Prosecutors contend Gudino acted willfully when he picked the lock on a gun cabinet with toothpicks, loaded a .22-caliber rifle, shot his brother in his bed then wounded his mother in the shoulder and stabbed her with a knife and scissors.
Politics / Ppa Condemns Fg’s Dropping Of Charges Against Ribadu by Ayemokhia: 9:16pm On May 08, 2010
The Progressive Peoples Alliance has condemned Federal Government’s decision to drop charges filed against the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The CCT had on Wednesday struck out the criminal charges of non-declaration of assets against Ribadu. The tribunal also vacated the bench warrant it earlier issued for his arrest.

But the PPA‘s Director of Strategy and Youth Mobilisation, Mr Ken Nze, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday that dropping the charges was ”unhealthy for the nation‘s democracy.”

Nze said, ”I don‘t think it is the right thing to do. When someone has some charges against him, let it be carried out accordingly and not dropped along the line for reasons that are not comprehensive.”

He wondered why the government should drop the charges, saying the action was one-sided. ”The action is not in the best interest of the nation,” he said.

The PPA director called on the Senate Committee on Security, the Nigerian Bar Association and the State Security Services to re-examine the action ”with a firm and fair mind.”

The decision of the CCT to strike out the criminal charges filed against Ribadu followed the Federal Government‘s decision to withdraw the charges brought against the former EFCC boss.

Striking out the case, The Chairman of the CCT, Justice Muntala Adebayo, said Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution empowered the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute, relax or withdraw criminal charges against individuals.

Politics / Fg Orders Probe Of Yar’adua’s Death by Ayemokhia: 8:51pm On May 08, 2010
Emerging details from the seat of power have indicated that the Federal Government has asked the security agencies to put machinery in motion and flag off a comprehensive probe of the circumstances leading to the eventual demise of President Umaru Yar’Adua on May 5, 2010. President Yar’Adua was buried in his native Katsina State on Thursday, following his death on Wednesday night.

He had suffered acute pericarditis and was flown to Saudi Arabia on November 23, 2009.

No one set eyes on the late president from November last year when he was moved to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment.

Sources said on Friday that President Goodluck Jonathan had come under intense pressure since the news filtered into the presidency that Yar’Adua died.

A source said that a number of those who called to commiserate with the president had expressed the view that he should immediately probe the circumstances surrounding the death.

It was also gathered that who was worried initially when his predecessor was brought into the country without official information on February 24, decided not to force the hand of the former First Lady to ensure that he saw Yar’Adua alive.

Sources, however, said that key figures in the country had been sending words to the presidency to probe the death so as to put things straight about conduct of persons in office.

“The government has concluded on the need to probe the circumstances leading to the death of the late President Yar’Adua. There are questions whether some people went beyond their briefs in the circumstances, especially concerning the events that unfolded from November 23.

“Some persons prevented the nation’s number two man from knowing details of the health situation of his immediate boss. It is something against the laws of the land because the law recognises that the president and the vice president are to run the country. When one is slightly indisposed, the other should know officially, that is the thinking now,” a source said of the impending probe.
Travel / 105 Nigerians Deported From Libya by Ayemokhia: 8:44pm On May 08, 2010
Quote
One hundred and five Nigerians were deported from Libya on Thursday for alleged various immigration and travel offences they committed in the North African country.

Our correspondent saw many of the deportees walking along the airport road, looking for taxis to take them to their various destinations. The deportees, who were brought into the country through the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, arrived very late in the evening.

They were brought into the country in a chartered aircraft marked Air Memphis with registration number AAW-5012.

Officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service at the MMIA said the 105 deportees represented the third batch brought into the country from Libya in the last three days.
Politics / Another Journalist Killed In C’river by Ayemokhia: 10:44pm On May 07, 2010
A cameraman attached to Channels Television, Mr. Jerry Usanga, has been killed in mysterious circumstances in Calabar, Cross River State.

Our correspondent learnt that Usanga was murdered on Tuesday night by yet-to-be-identified assailant and that his lifeless body was found along 136 Muritala Mohammed Highway, close to the station of the Nigerian Television Authority in Calabar.

His remains were said to have been picked up by policemen from the Federal Housing Police Division at about 9pm and deposited at the mortuary in the General Hospital along Mary Slessor Road.

Though there were conflicting versions of how Usanga was killed, it was gathered that the motive behind the incident was shrouded in mystery.

Some sources claimed that the cameraman who hailed from Akwa Ibom State was hacked to death following a brawl that broke out in a drinking joint located few metres away from where his corpse was found.

Others said his assailants lured him to the joint, assassinated him and dragged his lifeless body to the highway possibly to create an impression that he was hit by a car.

But police sources said no mark was found on his body and that his blood was not spilled.

Narrating how his body was discovered, the District Police Officer, Mr. Abdulkareem Dauda said, “My men on patrol called me at about 9pm and said they found a lifeless body on the highway. I immediately drove to the scene, cordoned off the area and searched the area. We discovered that people had deserted the scene, but we took the corpse to the mortuary.”

But another police source who pleaded anonymity confirmed to our correspondent that the son of a prime suspect was arrested.

According to him, the son of the suspect, who was said to be at large, had confessed that it was a blow from his father that sent Usanga to his early grave.

But it was learnt that the suspect, whose name was not disclosed had fled to an unknown area in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

It was further learnt that after he fell from the blow of the suspect, the journalist who until his death was part of the Government House Press crew became unconscious but was not rushed to any hospital.

The police source said, “He could have survived if he had been taken to the hospital. But it looked as if the people who did this wanted him dead. They watched him die and then they dragged his body to the highway and abandoned it there.

When his body was examined we could not find any sign that he was stabbed. There was no blood. It is only an autopsy that can reveal how he was killed.”

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the crime reported that people in the neighbourhood had deserted the area for fear of arrest.

But in the deceased home at Old Odukpani Close, opposite Mobil Guest House, sympathisers were trooping in to condole with the family and console the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Rose Jerry.

Rose said after several attempts to reach her husband on telephone failed, a strange voice called her through her husband’s handset and announced the death to her.

She said the voice relayed the information in a blunt manner but later switched off the telephone.

She, however, called on the police to fish out all the people responsible for her husband’s death.

Killers of journalists murdered in mysterious circumstances were yet to be unmasked.

Such journalists included Mr. Efenji Efenj, a former reporter with the Africa Independent Television; Mr. Bayo Ohu, a former Assistant Political Editor of The Guardian newspapers; and the Judiciary Correspondent of The Nation newspapers, Mr. Edo Ugbagwu.
Politics / Nigerians Contest In Uk Polls by Ayemokhia: 10:27pm On May 07, 2010
By Leke Adeseri & Hugo Odiogor, with agency reports
LONDON—FIVE Nigerians are among the hundreds of contestants vying for seats in the British parliament as the country goes to polls today, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported yesterday.
Also, Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour Party was said to have gained an opinion poll boost on the final day of campaigning ahead of the election.
Among those vying for seats in Parliament is Abiodun Akinoshun, who is standing as an independent candidate in Erith and Thamesmead constituency.

Others are Chuka Ummuna, a Labour candidate for Streatham, Helen Grant, Conservative Party candidate for Maidstone and the Weald, Kemi Adegoke, Conservative Party candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood, and Chi Onwurah, Labour candidate for Newcastle Central.

Speaking in London, Helen Grant promised to initiate development programmes in her contituency if elected. She said: “We need real change, to create a stable economy, restore jobs, unshackle our businesses, strengthen families, and form a safer, more just society, that respects and protects its citizens, especially the elderly.

“If I am elected as the next MP I will strive to achieve the changes we need with conviction, drive and determination and I will serve with integrity, honesty and sincerity.”

Kemi Adegoke, promised to provide effective representation for his Dulwich and West Norwood constituency, if elected.

Chi Onwurah, a Labour party candidate said she felt honoured to be selected as a candidate, noting: “I was honoured when the local members of Newcastle Central Labour Party, selected me to fight the next general election.”

She pledged to use her experience in business and technology “to place Newcastle at the centre of a new green revolution.”

Brown gets poll lift on final day of campaign

British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown’s Labour Party, gained an opinion poll boost on the final day of campaigning ahead of today’s election, but three national newspapers came out in support of opposition parties.

Conservative leader David Cameron campaigned through the night and Brown made an early visit, yesterday morning, to market workers in northern England to woo the one-third of voters said still to be wavering.

No fewer than 650 seats in the British parliament will be up for grabs between the Tory Labour and Liberal Democratic |Parties today as Britons go out to elect their leaders.

The election is a three way battle between incumbent Prime Minister, Mr. Gordon Brown of Labour Party, Mr. David Cameron of Conservative Tory Party and the fast rising Nick Clegg of Liberal Democratic Party.

At the last minute, opinion poll suggested a probable hung parliament, where none of the three parties would have a hegemonic dominance in the House of Commons.

The number of seats being contested for increased from 646 to 650 owing to boundary changes. To win an absolute majority, a party is required to secure 326 seats.

Politics / Nigerians Lobby To Be Jonathan's Vice-president by Ayemokhia: 10:14pm On May 07, 2010
Nigerian groups are lobbying for the post of vice-president after Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as president following the death of Umara Yar'Adua.

Whoever is named vice-president could be a strong contender for presidential elections due in 2011, analysts say.

It remains unclear whether Mr Jonathan will seek to stand for the governing People's Democratic Party.

There is no deadline for him to name a new deputy but an announcement is expected within the coming days.

Many shops and business in Nigeria remain closed as the seven days of official mourning continue.

But the BBC's Caroline Duffield in the capital Abuja says politics ticks on - over the phone and in private meetings.

She says there are still no answers to the big questions about Nigeria's future.

The political deal that has traditionally ensured peace between north and south is coming under strain, our correspondent says.

The PDP has a tradition of alternating power between the mainly Muslim north and the largely Christian south.

Mr Jonathan is a southerner and Mr Yar'Adua died less than half-way through the north's "turn" of two presidential terms.

To maintain regional balance, Mr Jonathan would be expected to name a northerner as his deputy, which could put that person in a strong position to contest the elections due early in 2011 on behalf of the PDP.

However, there is strong speculation that Mr Jonathan may seek to defy political convention and stand himself.

Thousands at funeral

Local media have been speculating about those who could be named vice-president.

Some names suggested so far include former anti-corruption chief Nuhu Ribadu, Aliyu Gusau, who Mr Jonathan recently named as his national security advisor, cabinet secretary Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and Mr Yar'Adua's nephew Murtala Yar'Adua.

Mr Jonathan has been acting president since February and will serve out the rest of the current presidential term.

Mr Yar'Adua died on Wednesday in the capital Abuja.

Thousands attended the funeral in his home town of Katsina.

Mr Yar'Adua's election in 2007 marked the first transfer of power from one civilian president to another since Nigeria's independence in 1960.

He promised a string of reforms in Africa's most populous nation, including tackling corruption and reforming the inadequate energy sector and flawed electoral system.

Analysts say he made the most progress in tackling unrest in the oil-rich Niger Delta by offering amnesties to rebels.

His long absence and the lack of detailed information about his health led to a political limbo in Nigeria, which was only filled when Mr Jonathan was named as acting president.

However, there was constant tension between supporters of Mr Yar'Adua and Mr Jonathan and in March the acting president dissolved the cabinet and later put his own team in place.

During Mr Yar'Adua's absence, Nigerian Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka was involved in the campaign to resolve the power vacuum.

On Thursday he said Mr Yar'Adua's illness had been manipulated by politicians who had concealed the fact he was in a vegetative state while making arrangements for the forthcoming election.

He told the BBC the late president had been a victim of a macabre game over his succession and not been allowed to be ill in dignity.

*Nigeria’s Arik Airline Wins Leadership Award
By Lateef Lawal

Arik Air, Nigeria’s largest commercial airline, has added yet another feather to its cap by emerging the Company of The Year at the Leadership Awards for Excellence 2009 held at the Conference Centre of Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja on Friday, April 30, 2010.

The honour was bestowed on Arik Air by the Board of Editors of Leadership Newspapers for the airline’s commitment to excellence in the aviation industry and for distinguishing itself from others through ongoing product and service improvements.

The award was presented to Arik Air Chairman, Sir J.I.A. Arumemi-Ikhide by elder statesman and Nigeria’s former High Commissioner to South Africa, Alhaji Shehu Malami.

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Sir Arumemi-Ikhide thanked the management of Leadership Newspapers for the honour and restated the airline’s commitment to the goal of revolutionizing the aviation sector in Nigeria and building an airline that will make Africa proud.

Sir Arumemi-Ikhide said: “Our commitment is to provide the people of Nigeria, and West Africa, with a means of traveling by air in the most safe, comfortable and reliable manner humanly achievable. That was why right from the outset, our business strategy was always modeled on the purchase of brand new aircraft, which would not only minimize maintenance cost but also ensure international safety standards.”

This is the second award Arik Air received this year. Earlier in February, Sir Arumemi-Ikhide and Arik Air were honoured at the 15th Annual Thisday Award 2010. Arik Air has also in 2008 and 2009 won the Thisday Airline of The year Award.

Sir Arumemi-Ikhide founded Arik Air in 2006 and the airline started commercial operations on October 30, 2006 with three brand new Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, thus becoming the first CRJ900 operator on the African continent and the first airline to introduce new commercial aircraft into Nigeria in over 20 years. Since then, Arik Air has grown its fleet to 25 aircraft, including two Airbus A340-500 which makes the airline the first operator of the wide bodied aircraft in Africa.

Arik Air is Nigeria’s leading commercial airline. It now operates a fleet of 26 state-of-the art regional, medium haul and long haul aircraft. The airline currently serves 21 airports across Nigeria as well as Accra (Ghana), Banjul (Gambia), Cotonou (Benin), Dakar (Senegal), Freetown (Sierra Leone), London Heathrow (UK), Johannesburg (South Africa) and New York JFK (USA).

The airline currently operates over 130 flights daily from its hubs in Lagos and Abuja

Romance / Should Married Women Go Clubbing? by Ayemokhia: 9:50pm On May 07, 2010
Quote
One question asked which I think would interest a hand full of people is, should married women go clubbing? Though the question refers particularly to women, I think the same can be asked on married men. Is there a straight answer like Yes they can or No they shouldn’t?
Marriage is a step into a new level of living, a different dimension a union that can either spell doom or bliss depending on the level of knowledge, wisdom and support possessed. One true fact is that you cannot continue to live as a single person after marriage. That would be recipe for argument, discord and perhaps divorce. Marriage demands new sets of rule, behaviours and attitudes in every aspect of your new life together. For every action and decision taken, your spouse needs to be considered.
Back to the question about clubbing. First, what is the reason behind your desire to go clubbing? What are your intentions? Are they noble? Is your spouse comfortable with you going out clubbing? If your spouse went with you, would he/she be comfortable with your behaviour? I guess if these questions are genuinely thought true with a true heart, the answer would be quite obvious.
The thought process should apply to other decisions you may have doubts about. In marriage it’s detrimental to take unilateral decisions without taking your spouse into consideration. Sometimes compromises need to be made to achieve harmony in the marriage. Other times you just have to agree to disagree on certain issues when a stale mate is reached. Both parties should apply equal efforts to making the union work, it’s more of a symbiotic relationship rather than parasitic. Sometimes the dominating or more outspoken spouse may tend to impose his/her desires and wishes on the other, while in the short term he/she may succeed, in the long run the outcome may not be pleasing. The crux of he matter is that both parties should dialogue and reach a decision they are both happy and comfortable with.
Science/Technology / 42-year Old Panel Beater Redesigns Vw Beetle by Ayemokhia: 9:48pm On May 07, 2010
Quote
The display of a locally redesigned Volkswagen Beeetle at the just concluded Abuja motor show may be a caricature of serious attempts by the nation to produce a truly Nigerian car, but experts agree that it is a commendable feat that should be encouraged, RASHEED BISIRIYU reports.
One of the revelations of the 12th edition of Abuja motor show is Modibbo Wagen, a locally assembled car deigned in the mode of Volkswagen Beetle.

But unlike the conventional Beetle which has two doors, the local model is built with four doors.

The producer, Mohammed Modibbo, is a 42 year old panel beater based in Zaki Biam, Benue State.

He recalled that the journey started in 2002. "As a panel beater blessed with talent," he said, "I had always thought of doing something unique. One day, I came up with the idea of building my own car. I designed it on a paper. I kept the sketch and continued to alter it for two years before coming up with the real car.

"It was adapted from the Volkswagen Beetle. But because it is longer than the ordinary Beetle, I had to do some adjustment to the pedal, the clutch and gear selector."

The car, which was constructed over a period of two years, was driven all the way from Zaki Biam to the Eagle Square, venue of the motor show in Abuja.

It understandable became the cynosure of all eyes as visitors to the event could not but notice the vehicle displayed at the centre of the fair ground with the maker himself on ground to take interested people through the story of what may be called his humble contribution to the development of auto industry in Nigeria.

According to Modibbo, "I used the doors of two Volkswagen cars for the vehicle. The size of the car has also been increased. And the engine capacity is also changed to that of Danfo bus, another vehicle produced by the Volkswagen, which can carry between 10 and 15 passengers,

"Due to the increase in the weight and size of the car, it needs extra engine to move it well. The car is therefore built with 1.6litre engine."

Having altered the specification of the original Beetle, people may doubt the safety of the car. But he has a ready answer to that, saying, "It is 100 per cent safe. I can even remove my hands from the steering when driving for some minutes to show its stability. I had done some perfection on the tyre alignment before assembling other parts."

Speaking further on the uniqueness of the new vehicle, Modibbo says apart from giving it two additional doors, there is a table affixed to the back seats for the comfort of passengers at the back, which they can use for eating or relaxing the legs.

The seats of the Modibbo Wagen are also different from the normal Beetle. The dashboard too is unique. Although the car has no air conditioner, it comes with a fan.

Modibbo cannot really recollect the cost of building the car as the parts were assembled at different time, some constructed over a period of two years.

But he says with less than N1m, he could build a similar car within six three to six months.

Driving the car all the way from Zaki Biam to Abuja, he had encountered a number of law enforcement agents.

According to him, "Whenever they stopped me and asked about the car, I told them I designed it. They would show some amazement, congratulate me and ask me to go."

Modibbo's effort is coming about a year after Acting President Goodluck Jonathan had challenged stakeholders in the automobile industry to work towards producing the nation's first car.

Interestingly, the charge was made at the 11th Abuja motor show held at the same venue last year when Jonathan, then a vice president came to the event to represent President Umar Yar'adua.

A major breakthrough, which was a follow up to the call came in the last quarter of last year from an Nnewi-based privately-owned, indigenous firm, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, which assembled a bus relying on technical expertise of some Chinese automobile engineers.

His plan was to start with 20 different models of the brand, followed by mini trucks and other products in accordance with the market demand.

Innoson Chairman, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, said that the idea was to produce vehicles that would be so competitively to make imported second-hand models popularly called Tokunbo unattractive.

Managing Director, BKG Exhibition, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Agwu, whose firm organised the motor fair, commended the two efforts, describing the feat as part of the objectives of the annual auto show.

He said the objectives of the fair were to stimulate the enormous potential in the automobile, parts and accessories market in the country and work towards making Nigeria the hub of automobile business in Africa.

This, he stressed was beside the primary aim of using the forum as a veritable opportunity for participants to display their products and meet the general public in one place, as well as serve as a forum for the players to have feedback on their products and services.

Agwu said that Modibbo should be encouraged in order to spur other people with similar idea.

As part of the contribution by his company, he had directed that a donation box be placed near the displaced Modibbo Wagen for people to drop their token cash gifts.

But Modibbo missed the opportunity of getting a prompt approval of the Federal Government at the motor show as he came a day after the opening ceremony to the fair ground when the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry came to declare it open on behalf of the Acting President.

The efforts to manufacture a truly Nigerian car started before the establishment of Volkswagen of Nigeria and Peugeot Automobile Nigeria in the early '70s.

According to the Acting President, in a speech sent to the last Abuja motor show, "The idea of inviting these two car manufacturers was not only to locate their factories or assembly plants in Nigeria, but to transfer technology and sow the seed for the indigenous Nigerian car."

Other automobile assemblers, including Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company in Enugu producers of the Mercedes luxury buses, Leyland in Ibadan and Steyr, producers of tractors in Bauchi were later to join. Even as many of them have become shadow of their glorious past, none could produce a truly Nigerian vehicle the nation really yearned for.

A girl once said that the most painful incident in her life was her being raped and dis-virgined at 17 by a prophet she never knew all in the name of her being possessed. The mother never knew about it cos she was afraid to tell the mom because her step dad master-minded the whole thing. She was dragged from home under the watchful eyes of the mom by the so-called prophet and the step dad to sleep in the prophet's house for deliverance. Instead of being delivered what did she get, ASSAULT. If you were in her shoes will you ever forgive your step dad or mom?
Romance / Does An Intelligent Partner Intimidate You? by Ayemokhia: 9:44pm On May 07, 2010
Most might find "intelligent" people a fair bit intimidating. In a sense that they feel "insecure" when being compared to them in most cases. Not that it is a bad thing. But people naturally gravitate to the more intelligent species than they would to those who are lesser in comparison. I am sure we all have had seen and experience those moments, before.

Hence, does an intelligent partner intimidate You? Do you feel comfortable or uncomfortable?

Is it more exciting to have them around or is it more annoying?

Kindly give your "two cents" worth.

Politics / Mopol Shoots Man For Allegedly Laughing by Ayemokhia: 9:35pm On May 07, 2010
Quote
THIS is getting out of hand, believe me.  Our men are becoming uncontrollably reckless with fire arms and this calls for great concern.  We have to tell ourselves the truth.  The other day,  it was a violent protest in Ajegunle over the killing of a defenseless young boy by a police Corporal who was on illegal duty.

Three days later, another trigger-happy police man attached to MOPOL 49, Lekki  who was on a special duty at a bank on Marina , unwarrantedly shot dead a bureau d’ change operator while he alleged attempted to defraud an old woman.

The matter is still on as I speak with you,   Then just last Thursday,  another one opened fire on another young boy at Lekki Phase 1;  claiming that the victim was hysterically laughing at him.  Can you imagine that?  In those days, it used to be accidental discharge, but we are no longer confronting accidental discharge today.    It is now  willful shooting of innocent persons.” These were the words of a  senior police officer at ‘Area A’, Lion Building Lagos.

Perhaps, the above reaction of a senior police officer who craved anonymity aptly summed the unprofessional and reckless attitude of some of our policemen, especially the rank and file on the street today. Their latest victim is 27-year-old Udeme Akwa-Jackobson, an  Akwa-Ibom state born construction worker
It is only a medical miracle that would prevent the promising young man from being amputated as he has since been moved out of the private hospital he was being treated for lack of funds.   He has resorted to traditional herbal treatment for now pending when police authorities or other kind-hearted Nigerians, might come to his aid.

How it all started.

Visibly writhing in pains at his Shell estate one-room apartment, in Lekki Phase1,  Udeme whose bandaged but swollen left leg is already emitting offensive stench as a result of the gunshot wounds;  was however,  able to muster the strength to speak with Crime Guard.  To him, the incident could not have been ordinary because, “I was not the only one there; so how come the police took on me?  I believe there is spiritual undertone.”   He said, “that day was on a

Thursday, April 15, 2010 and time was about 5.00pm. I was outside in front of my house chatting with some of my friends about sundry issues.  We were talking about a maid who desperately needed another job and we mentioned one lady in the area that might help her.  Just then, the lady we mentioned passed by and we all laughed at the coincidence”.

The shooting
Soon after, a bus painted in Lagos commercial colour popularly called Danfo pulled over and stopped beside us.  Inside the bus were two mobile policemen.  One of them alighted and came to me, held me by my shirt and asked why I was laughing at him.

I was confused and shocked altogether;  to say the least.  But he was serious about his allegation because he was violently pulling me towards the parked bus.  All entreaties from my friends that we were not laughing at him fell on deaf ears.

We were shocked the more, when another mobile police man who had long parked his motorbike by the gutter where we were, came up to corroborate the allegation.   As the argument raged, one of the mobile policemen that came with them tried to calm the situation by saying that we could not have been laughing at his colleague.

When the argument degenerated into slaps and blows, a Pastor who lives on my street came to the rescue and was able to free me from his grip.  But just then, he grabbed a pistol from the waist belt of his colleague and tried to hit me on the head and I dodged it and jumped over the gutter.  At that point, he pointed the gun at me and before I could turn to react to my friends shout of Udeme, Udeme, I heard a gun shot.

The police man had shot me on the leg and blood started gushing out.  At the hospital  after the shooting, the Mobile Policeman disappeared into thin air with his colleagues while my friends and neighbors rushed me to a nearby private hospital and later, Mainland General hospital.  But after five days in the hospital, things did not improve and, of course,  there was no money to procure some of the prescribed drugs.

So, my wife and some of my friends came and took me home where they contracted a traditional herbal healer for the purpose.   As you can see for yourself, it is not improving. Matter not reported and police not aware
Perhaps for fear of the unknown, the unprofessional conduct of the mobile police man was not reported in any police station; and therefore, the Lagos police command which jurisdiction the offence was committed is not aware of it.

“The matter was not reported because one, my friends are afraid that the police might turn the whole thing against them.  Two, we did not know the identity of the policeman who shot me, but the one who was begging him to leave me alone is a known person.

Though I do not know his name, he is attached to the Shell estate,” Udeme said.

But the Command’s spokes person, Mr. Frank Mba said he was yet to be informed about the shooting incident.  “I am not aware of it.  A policeman shot somebody just because he claimed that person was laughing at him?  I am not aware,” Mba maintained.

Politics / 18 Nigerians Face Execution In Indonesia by Ayemokhia: 9:24pm On May 07, 2010
Quote
Eighteen Nigerians who were condemned to death by the Indonesian judiciary in 2008 for their alleged various criminal offences, including drug peddling and other related offences, may be executed in Indonesia between June and August, this year.
The convicts had been slated for execution in Indonesia on September 28, 2008, shortly after the Ramadan feast of Indonesians, but Nigeria’s high powered delegation, comprising the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora and some Senators visited Indonesia and opened discussions between the Nigerian and Indonesian governments on the fate of the convicts.

The Indonesian government had condemned a total of 21 Nigerians to death, sentenced four to life imprisonment and eight others to various jail terms, ranging from 11 to 18 years.

Out of the 21 condemned Nigerians, two of them, Samuel Iwuchukwu Okoye, and Hassan Anthony Nwaolisa, had already been executed on June 28, 2008, while another, Augustine Celo Ogbonna, died in prison custody in September, 2008.

In a strongly worded petition to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Ewa, Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, dated April 22, 2010, a copy of which was made available to Daily Sun yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, an Onitsha-based human rights lawyer, Barrister Melly Chukwuemeka Eze, is appealing to the National Assembly to take concrete steps with a view to getting reprieve for the condemned Nigerians.

Eze, in the petition entitled: “Shocking revelation from Indonesian Prisons: Execution of 18 Nigerians scheduled for between June and August, 2010,” noted that most shockingly, he learnt from the prisoners that those on death row might be executed anytime between June and August this year if no further diplomatic efforts and pressure were mounted on Indonesian authorities.

According to Eze, “I have it on good and reliable authority that officials of Indonesian government who opened discussions with the Nigerian delegation are now expressing disappointment over an apparent display of unseriousness on the part of Nigerian government over the diplomatic move already initiated by Nigerian government officials”.

The human rights lawyer recalled that his earlier petition to the Presidency, National Assembly and the Foreign Affairs Ministry in October, 2008 in respect of the 18 Nigerians on death row and others serving various jail terms in Indonesia had attracted reactions from Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who moved a motion on the floor of the Senate to that effect.

He also recalled that his earlier petition had attracted the attention of the foreign affairs minister who sent a high powered delegation to Indonesia to mediate on behalf of the convicts and other prisoners, numbering 50, serving various jail terms in Indonesia, with the minister himself as part of the delegation.

He recalled that the Nigerian delegation had returned with a strong hope of change of heart by the Indonesian authorities, which prompted Dabiri-Ewa to grant a press interview where she assured Nigerians that the Nigerian government was committed to doing everything possible to address the plight of those Nigerians, adding that the Senate President also wrote him personally, promising that the issue would be addressed, just as Senator Chukwumerije personally wrote.

He expressed the fear that government might not have taken any further steps to get reprieve for these Nigerians, nearly two years after.

He gave the names of those on death row as Kingsley Okonkwo, Michael Titus Igwe (Real name-Izuchukwu F. Ezimoha), Uchenna Cajethan Onyenworo, Ekperedike S. Olekama, Adam Wilson (real name-Emmanuel Okari), Hillary K. Chimezie, Eugene Ape and Humphery Ejike.

Others on the death row are Okwudili Ayotaeze, Obinna Nwajiagu, Daniel Enemuo, Fredrick Lutter (Real name-Benjamin Obiora), Sylvester Nwaolisa, Gabriel Nnadi, Dennis Anumona and Ikenna Ezenwune, while Stephen Rashid, Joseph Ndaba, Ken Michael and Obinna George are currently serving life imprisonment.

He disclosed that most of the convicts, who are currently languishing in Nusakambagan Island prisons in Jarkata and other parts of Indonesia, were arrested shortly on arrival to the country and without them hearing Indonesian language, they were sentenced to death, without allowing them to take plea or have fair representation from legal practitioners.

Giving an instance of one of the convicts who was arrested with an Indonesian who had since been released, and another one who was arrested in a hotel where a bag of heroin was dumped by unknown persons, who was later arrested, the human rights lawyer saidthe worst part of the whole issue was that the Indonesian government said for their cases to be reviewed, each of the convicts must pay between $15,000 to $20,000 US Dollars.
