Vice President Yemi Osinbajo hinted yesterday that the federal government spent N1.3 trillion on capital projects from the 2016 budget appropriation. Speaking at the2017 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national conference in Lagos, Osinbajo noted that the figure was the highest sum spent on infrastructure in the history of the country. “The federal government spent about N1.3 trillion on capital projects in 2016, the highest in the history of the country”, the vice president said, adding that beyond the huge spending on capital project in the past year, “power sector reform is also ongoing as it is one of the most important sectors in the country”. Speaking at a forum with the sub-title, “Conversations with the Vice-President”, moderated by Zain Asher, a CNN news anchor, Osinbajo enthused that the All Progressives Congress-led administration had set a solid foundation for the nation’s economic recovery, which he described, as the most important reform of the administration. He said the federal government was “dealing with a mono-economy (relying on one major export or natural resource) and a financial industry that was essentially opaque. “We have set a foundation of rebuilding the economy, creating the Single Treasury Account (TSA), monitoring government’s spending, modifying the tax system to be more efficient and implementing executive orders”, he stated. The vice president also noted that the amount spent on capital projects from the 2016 budget was a bit different from that of the minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, assuring that the administration will continue to prioritize infrastructure spending. Adeosun had disclosed that the total money spent on capital projects is N1.2 trillion. President Muhammadu Buhari is currently addressing Nigerians live on national television today, August 21. There had been requests from many Nigerians for President Buhari to address them, even while he was on medical vacation in London. The president's absence had provoked protests from a group called 'Concerned Nigerians' led by veteran entertainer, Chales Oputa, popularly called Charly Boy and online influencer, Deji Adeyanju which staged a protest at the Unity Fountain tagged 'Resume or Resign.' 7:03am: Nigeria must remain one and our unity is not negotiable 7:04am: There are legitimate concerns. But we must work out our co-existence 7:04am: We will not tolerate inflammatory comments from Nigerians 7:05am: The national consensus is that it is better we live together than to live apart 7:06am: Terrorists and criminals must be fought relentlessly 7:06am: We must eschew our differences and work together for the lasting peace of Nigeria 7:08am: I remain resolute in ensuring that the unity of Nigeria is sustained 7:06am: I am so grateful to be home. God bless our dear nation Full speech below: My dear citizens, I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters. 2. In the course of my stay in the United Kingdom, I have been kept in daily touch with events at home. Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far. 3. In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analyzed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united. 4. Nigeria's unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood. 5. Every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance. 6. I believe the very vast majority of Nigerians share this view. 7. This is not to deny that there are legitimate concerns. Every group has a grievance. But the beauty and attraction of a federation is that it allows different groups to air their grievances and work out a mode of co-existence. 8. The National Assembly and the National Council of State are the legitimate and appropriate bodies for national discourse. 9. The national consensus is that, it is better to live together than to live apart. 10. Furthermore, I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax. 11. Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety. 12. Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes, in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all. 13. Finally, dear Nigerians, our collective interest now is to eschew petty differences and come together to face common challenges of; economic security, political evolution and integration as well as lasting peace among all Nigerians. 14. I remain resolutely committed to ensuring that these goals are achieved and maintained. I am so glad to be home. 15. Thank you and may God bless our dear nation. Former presidential aid to Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri has blasted Kogi State government for declaring tomorrow Monday a public holiday to honor Buhari's return. He said; To show how useless governance has become, a state Governor declares tomorrow a public holiday to celebrate President Muhammadu Buhari's return! Now, I sympathize with President Buhari, but aren't public holidays meant to be for events pertaining to a nation's history? President Buhari has been a resident of the U.K. for over a hundred days, has he ever known the U.K. to proclaim a public hoiiday because the Queen returned from hospital? Our army killed 345 Shiite men, women, children and infants, our Air Force killed 119 people at the Rann IDP camp in a mistaken bombing. We did not declare any national mourning. Yet we declare a public holiday for Buhari's return! This is the height of sycophancy and this is why I insist that President Buhari must. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: Avoid doing anything you would not want anyone in the world to know on public Wi-Fi. You may think you're safe in that busy café or big-name hotel, but public Wi-Fi is a major liability. It doesn’t matter how safe the connection seems to be; your computer is vulnerable to hackers because you have no idea who is really in charge of that router or who has access to it and all the data that passes through it. Knowledge is power. There are lots of ways to protect yourself, of course. Your best defense is a virtual private network (VPN), which can prevent nosy strangers from snooping on your browser. You can also employ the usual firewalls and antivirus software to defend your computer from hackers and malware. Even the best security systems have their weaknesses, and you have likely never heard of this one: File sharing on a public network can expose your computer to data thieves. This is a scary problem because you may not even realize that you’re sharing files. But if your computer is on the wrong setting, you may attract any number of cyber-criminals. So how do you make sure your computer isn’t leaking information by accident? File Sharing File sharing is very handy, especially for groups of people. Whether you’re using iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive, file sharing allows a large team to work on a single project at once, or families to browse digital photo albums, or data specialists to organize large batches of information. This is very convenient, as long as you’re on your own secure network. But if you’re sharing files on public Wi-Fi, your folders may be accessible to anyone connected to the same public network. In other words, file sharing automatically exposes your computer and everything you intend to share. Your vacation photos may end up in the wrong hands, and so could your contracts, spreadsheets, and tax information. In fact, you don't have to be a hacker to take advantage of shared folders. Anyone who looks around their network folders can instantly run a search and find unguarded files. It works the other way around too. An attacker can also set up a shared folder with malicious files. You may stumble into the mysterious folder and think, “Wait a minute, where did this come from?” Then you click on it, releasing the malware onto the desktop. There are other ways you can get into trouble. Want to ensure your privacy? Make sure to turn off file sharing before you connect to public WiFi. Here’s how to do it: Turn off file sharing on Windows 1. Search for "Control Panel" then click on the best match to open it. 2. Under "Network and Internet," click on "View network status and tasks." 3. On the next page, click "Change advanced sharing settings." 4. Under "File and printer sharing," tick off "Turn off file and printer sharing." 5. To prevent network snoopers from seeing your computer, tick off "Turn off network discovery" too. 6. Save changes. Turn off file sharing on a Mac: 1. Open your Mac's System Preferences (the gear icon on your dock). 2. Click on the "Sharing" icon. 3. On the next "Sharing Page," uncheck File Sharing. 4. I also recommend that you uncheck all the other sharing services here when connecting to public Wi-Fi. 5. Close the window and you're set. Turn file sharing back on Okay, you’re done your business, and now you can log off of public Wi-Fi. You’ve taken all the necessary precautions, and there’s a good chance none of your information was compromised. Just remember to switch your file sharing back on when you get back to your home or office. None of these services will work unless you restore your regular settings. When you’re back on your secure server, you can continue sharing to your heart’s content. MORE: http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/one-mistake-people-make-using-public-wi.html |

Doctors in the small Chilean town of La Boca have found a calcified fetus in the uterus of an elderly woman who says she never realized she got pregnant. Estela Meléndez, 91, says she has had a lump on her belly for many years, but had no idea that she was carrying a fetus. Doctors say it has been in her uterus for over six decades. The fetus is calcified and poses no health risk to the woman. Meléndez has difficulty hearing and in recent years her gait has been slowed by arthritis. But otherwise she’s doing fine. She’s a resident of La Boca, a town located where the Rapel River meets the Pacific Ocean in the municipality of Navidad. It was not until she recently suffered a fall that doctors spotted something on her X-ray that caused concern. “The doctor said I had a tumor and that they needed to operate on me,” Meléndez told CNN. But when a second X-ray was ordered to confirm, doctors couldn’t believe their eyes. The mass they were looking at turned out not to be a tumor, but a fetus. “I have the lump here,” Meléndez says, touching her belly. For the elderly woman and her family, the finding has been quite a shock. Meléndez’s husband of 74 years, Manuel González, died in January at age 91. González made a living as a fisherman and a boater in the coastal town. One of her few regrets, Meléndez says, is that she and her husband were unable to have children. “We suffered tremendously because of this reason,” Meléndez said. “Can you imagine? More than 60 years!” said Luis Meléndez, the woman’s nephew. “I wonder how she never felt bad once the fetus died inside of her.” Doctors at the local clinic considered surgery to remove the fetus but later determined that, in this case, operating on a 91-year-old patient was riskier than doing nothing at all. Meléndez says it hurts sometimes, but more often than not it’s just an uncomfortable lump. On a deeper level, she says, the lump on her belly reminds her of her husband and their unfulfilled dream of having a child all those years ago. An elderly Dutch couple kissed goodbye and died holding each other’s hands in a rare double euthanasia. Nic and Trees Elderhorst, both 91, said it was their final wish to pass away together after 65 years of marriage. . According to reports, the couple both felt they could no longer live their lives due to ill health and didn’t want to go on alone if one of them died. Nic had suffered a stroke five years ago and needed to take a gruelling course of antibiotics every day to keep himself alive. . Trees had cared for her husband in recent years while seeing her own health slowly decline. The couple had previously filed for euthanasia and, after Trees was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year, doctors felt the conditions for them to end their own lives had been met. . The couple shared one last kiss before passing away together hand-in-hand on June 4. “It soon became clear that it could not wait much longer,” the couple’s daughter told The Gelderlander. “The geriatrician determined that our mother was still mentally competent. . However, if our father were to die, she could become completely disoriented, ending up in a nursing home. “Something which she desperately did not want. Dying together was their deepest wish.” Another daughter added: “They gave each other a big kiss and passed away confidently holding hands. According to their own wish.” MORE http://www.bgossipnaija.com.ng/2017/08/loving-couple-91-who-wish-to-die.html |
A Mpumalanga primary school teacher was fatally shot in full view of pupils on Monday. Kate Chiloane, 30, was shot by her husband, Vusi Mdluli, who later shot himself at their home. The incident occurred at Sedibasathutho primary school near Bushbuckridge. Spokesperson for Mpumalanga department of education, Jasper Zwane, said the husband entered the Grade Two class under the pretence that he was fetching something from his wife. . “He then shot her but she managed to get away and tried running to the staff-room but he followed her and shot her again outside where she died,” said Zwane. He said the husband then left for the couple’s house, which is not far from the school, where he also killed himself. http://www.bgossipnaija.com.ng/2017/08/south-african-teacher-killed-by-her.html |
The special adviser to Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, has said revealed what he saw of the ailing president when he joined a delegation to London recently. Adesina confirmed that President Buhari was, indeed, smart and showed that he was truly ready to make his six-hour trip back to Nigeria. Speaking during a programme on Channels Television late Monday, August, 14, Adesina also said those asking the president to return with his doctors rather than remain in London are only expressing their opinions. “The president I saw was sharp, he was smart, he was lucid. The president I saw was like his old self, almost completely mended. “But then, like we said in the statement we issued which is what he said to us in the first place, he would come when his doctors say it’s time to go,” Adesina said He said the president told them he had followed events since leaving the country on May 7. According to him, Buhari also spoke about the current protest by a group asking him to resign. He said the president thinks the protest is just part of democracy and that the participants are exercising their rights. Asked if Buhari is not troubled that he is outside Nigeria treating himself instead of being in his country, Adesina said: “The fact that he is in London and is taking treatment there for a while shows his belief that you procure treatment from wherever you can get it. “It is a man who is alive that continues to lead his family, lead his church, lead his mosque or lead a nation.” He also stated that he really does not know who is responsible for Buhari’s treatment in London. “I do not know who is paying (for his treatment), but as a president, he has a right to be treated by the country,” he said. Concerning the alleged low rating of the Buhari administration currently, Adesina said such would change positively before the end of the tenure in 2019. He noted that things had gone very bad in the country before Buhari emerged as president adding that two years was not enough to redeem a country brought to shambles by a 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/see-what-buhari-said-about-return-or.html |
Singer Kingsley ‘Kcee’ Okonkwo says his bid to contest the Anambra governorship election holding in November is not a joke. The singer had last week announced his intention to run after sharing a campaign banner, whose slogan read: “Peace and enjoyment for all.” Following his announcement, several celebrities have towed the same path, making many question the seriousness of any of them. But Kcee insists that he’s keen to run. “My campaign manager said I should not speak much about it and that’s what I’m gonna stand on. I’m gonna be making official statement about it but trust me it’s not a joke,” he told HIP TV. “I think the youth has to speak up and that’s what I’m saying right now. “And I think you have what it takes to do it and I have what it takes so if you believe in yourself, make it rain.” The singer has said he will use the proceeds from his forthcoming album to fund his campaign. Explaining his decision to venture into politics, Kcee said he’s interested in making an impact on the lives of the masses. He had said: “We have begun and there is no stopping us. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you the first project of – Attention to Detail movement – The Album proceeds from this would be used to further our campaign project. Do not leave this space. The world is not ready for all the plans we have in store.” http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/my-governorship-ambition-not-joke-kcee.html |

Speaking at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forum in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, Fayose criticised the presidency for shrouding Buhari’s health in secrecy. He said he was excluded from the delegation that visited Buhari in London because the organisers of the trip know that he would “definitely reveal the truth”. Two weeks ago, Buhari hosted seven governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP at the Abuja House in London. Fayose said he had joined his counterparts on that trip, he would have observed Buhari closely and disclose the outcome of his findings to Nigerians. “Why did they not take me to London. Why didn’t they take me there? They obviously knew very well that I would listen to the man and know whether his voice is clear or not. Then, I would be able to tell Nigerians the truth,” he said. “Leadership must come with a certain measure of strength. If you don’t have strength, how can you govern the country? “So, we need a president that is hale and hearty. If our president doesn’t want to go, let him become the minister of foreign affairs in London. These are statements of fact.” He also spoke about the supreme court judgment which sacked Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman of the PDP. Fayose accused Buruji Kashamu, senator representing Ogun east of conniving with Sheriff to work against the interest of the PDP. Describing Kashamu as a blackleg, Fayose wondered why a PDP senator would be “condemning me and praising Buhari”. He said the crisis in the party started from Ogun state. “I am not one of the people who will tell the APC that it is a good party. They are only deceiving you. The only thing they do is to see that the PDP die ahead of 2019 but the average man on the street can see and they can measure the difference,” he said. “They cannot wait for elections in 2019 to get rid of these people because they are tired of them. “The crisis in the PDP started from Ogun state when they didn’t allow Gbenga Daniel to succeed himself. We thought it was a joke; gradually the monster started moving from one state to another. “A blind man cannot lead us with money that has no source. How can a PDP member be praising President Muhammadu Buhari and condemning Fayose? I cannot blame him because his family has never produced a governor. “Since he went to the senate, he has not spoken a word. I cannot be in a marriage where the woman is meeting with another man. Buruji is a blackleg in the PDP. He has done bad things to the party and we cannot be with him again. How can he be asking for the party structure in the South-West? I identify with Ogun stakeholders but not Buruji.” Source: http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/if-buhari-refuses-to-resign-he-should.html |

Have Copies of Your Passport and Important Documents This is in case your passport and documents gets misplaced, lost or stolen, to help you identify yourself and ensure you can still get back into the country, or prove your citizenship. Ensure Your Debit Card Will Work in the Country You’re Visiting A visit to your bank some weeks before your trip to inform them of your travel plans should take care of this. They can then advise you on what you need to do to ensure your debit card works in the country you’re visiting. Ensure You Have Local Cash On You Again, you can visit your bank for some help with this. Your bank can help you convert some of your cash to the local currency of the country you are visiting. This is because it’s not every place that accepts credit or debit cards, especially important places like train and bus stations, so to avoid being stranded, it might be best to have some local currency on you. Get Ready all Necessary Gear For Your Electronics There are different electrical outlets in different parts of the world, so it’s important for you to get an adapter so you can plug your devices into foreign sockets. Trying to get an adapter when you arrive can be quite stressful as you are not likely to immediately know where to go to get one, especially if it’s your first time visiting. You can also buy portable phone chargers and/or spare batteries that you can easily charge and swap into phones, cameras, and other electronics so that you can stay fully charged while on the go. You can also consider buying a power bank to help with this. Pack an Extra Set of Clothes in your Carry-On Bag To avoid having nothing to wear or having to buy an extra set of clothes if your luggage is lost or there is some delay in getting them to you, it is best to pack an extra set of clothes in your bag just so you have a change of clothing. source; http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/see-most-important-things-to-do-before.html |
